Climbing roses

Watering

In the first days after planting the seedling, it is watered daily, then every other day, then after two. Watering an adult bush depends on the summer rainfall. Usually every ten days a bucket of water is poured under the root. Focus on the drying out of the soil under the bush. If it has dried out three to four centimeters deep, then it's time to water.

For a comfortable state of the roots and a reduction in the number of watering, the near-stem circle of plants is mulched. Pour a layer of mulch at least ten centimeters. For this they use mowed and dried grass, weeds, compost, sawdust, decorative chips.

Roses are never watered with cold water. The climbing group is no exception, although they are less likely to get sick with fungal diseases. But cold water still provokes their appearance.

After watering, when the earth dries up, it is loosened. Then a crust will not form, preventing air from reaching the roots.

Examples in landscape design

Border mini-roses fit perfectly into the landscape design of any personal plot. Due to their compactness, bright colors and sophistication, they are perfectly combined with various garden plants. These colors can be used to decorate borders of various shapes and designs. Compositions of rose bushes planted near stairs, paths, recreation areas and "dry streams" look beautiful. To get an interesting effect, roses should be combined with other vibrant flowers and herbaceous perennials. Combinations of roses with dwarf barberries, Japanese spirea and lingonberry bushes will help to emphasize the beauty of flowers.

When decorating a site, it is important to consider that red roses should not be placed next to orange, purple and pink flowers. If a flower border is installed along the garden path, it can be filled with combinations of white with blue, red with lilac, yellow with purple.

It is best to use flowers of the same variety for design. Such compositions can be made horizontal, or they can be placed in flower beds lined with natural stone. In the spring, planting snowdrops, hulls and muscari will help dilute the juicy colors.

If a lot of shrubs are planted on the personal plot, they can be supplemented with flower beds of roses. They will look win-win against the background of spruce, thuja, cotoneaster and magnolia. To avoid clumsy design, bushes and plants should be placed at a distance of 1 meter. The courtyard fences look great, near which are planted rose bushes and lilacs, chubushnik, yellow acacia. This combination of the palette gives the site an unusual look.

Planting climbing roses

Rose is a perennial plant with a strong root system. When planting, this property of the root system must be taken into account. Before you start planting, you need to carry out preparatory work: to prepare the soil, plants and planting sites.

We begin preparatory work with the preparation of the substrate - the nutrient mixture.

It is preferable to determine the rate of fertilizers according to the type of soil, however, approximately you can fertilize the soil in the following ratio: add 10 kg of humus or peat compost per 1 square meter. Then you need to prepare the planting pits, they should be 50-60 cm deep, and each should be fertilized with 4-5 kg of humus or compost mixed with the soil. And be sure to remember that the soil is fertilized during the next season after planting.

Choosing a site for planting climbing roses.

The most important point when planting climbing roses is the right place, it should be sunny and well-ventilated, and there should be a free place to shelter roses for wintering nearby. In no case, you can not plant climbing roses in drafts and wetlands, as well as in the place where roses previously grew.

It is better if the site has a slight slope, this will protect the soil from stagnant rainwater and excess moisture.If the place is chosen near the wall, then the planting hole is dug at a distance of 50-60 cm from the wall so that the root system does not dry out. And plants of other types are planted at a distance of not 50 cm from the climbing rose bush. After planting, the stems of climbing roses are attached to the support.

Preparation of climbing rose seedlings.

Before planting, the seedlings of climbing roses must be properly prepared. When planting in spring, the seedlings are soaked for a day so that the roots are saturated with water, if possible, it is better to soak the entire plant as a whole. Then pruning is carried out, choosing 3-4 strong shoots, pruning them at approximately 25-30 cm, the remaining shoots are removed. The roots are also pruned, removing damaged and too long, leaving small branches. Such pruning will stimulate growth during the first year after planting, and then abundant flowering for the next year is guaranteed.

Preparing the landing site.

The planting holes should be of such width and depth that the root system in it is located freely. When planting, gently spread the roots and press down with earth. If roses are grafted, then the grafting site should be deepened by 3-4 cm. And do not forget that the planting hole must be covered with prepared soil mixed with humus or compost. The earth around the planted plant is well compacted, and it is spilled very abundantly with water so that the soil subsides and there are no voids around the roots. Before the appearance of young shoots, the planted bushes must be covered with loose earth. Hilling is carried out to protect the root system, it is to protect the roots from drying out during spring planting, and during autumn planting from the cold. When planting in spring, the layer of earth must be removed with the appearance of new shoots, until the buds begin to bloom. The soil just needs to be leveled.

In order for water to be retained in the irrigation zone, it is necessary to make an earthen roller

It is especially important not to allow the soil to dry out by keeping the soil moist when planting climbing roses in spring

In Ukraine, an acceptable time for planting climbing roses is spring (at a soil temperature of at least 8-10 degrees C). And only in the southern regions it is advisable to do this in the fall, since within 2 weeks after planting, young roots are formed, before the onset of cold weather they are hardened and winter well.

With the arrival of early spring in climbing roses, the development of both the ground part and the root system begins at the same time, which leads to the formation of a stronger bush.

A properly planted climbing rose bush will soon delight you with abundant and lush flowering, with unusually beautiful flowers.

Wicker rose care

The following points are included in the care of roses:

  • regular watering;
  • top dressing;
  • circumcision;
  • destruction of pests;
  • preparation for winter;
  • arrangement of supports.

How to water

Although climbing roses are drought tolerant, they will need to be hydrated every 7 days. For each bush, water is used in a volume of 10-20 liters. Spreading can be prevented by forming a small earthen rampart next to the trunk circle.

A few days after watering, to retain moisture, it is necessary to loosen and carry the mulch in the form of peat.

Features of applying dressings

Young shrubs will need fertilizers at the end of summer, it is by this time that they will use up the supply of nutrients in the soil. Potassium salts will help prepare roses for the long winter period. The ideal remedy is considered to be a tincture of wood ash.

In the second year, organic matter and mineral fertilizing are introduced by the method of alternation, and in the third year, only organic matter is left.

The most popular is a mixture of wood ash with manure at the rate of 1 glass / liter and 9 liters of water. Any organic fertilizer will do instead of manure.

It is important to remember: when the shrubs begin to bloom, you do not need to make additional fertilizing.

Arrangement of supports

This point is limited only by the imagination of a person.

The following structures can play the role of a support material:

  • dried old tree;
  • lattice;
  • arch;
  • metal arched structures.

The climbing rose is the perfect decoration for featureless walls or unattractive buildings. In this case, gratings or rods are installed on the supporting structure, to which lashes will be tied in the future. The plants themselves are planted at half a meter distance.

Note to the gardener: with the horizontal arrangement of the lashes, flowering is carried out along the length, and if the fastening is vertical, then the flowers appear on the upper parts of the plants.

About pests and diseases

Most often, climbing roses are attacked by spider mites and aphids. In the initial stage of aphid infestation, you can use folk methods and not resort to chemicals. A small number of insects are removed by hand, but if the affected area is quite large, it is necessary to rub the soap, fill it with water and let it stand until the soap dissolves. Then it is necessary to carry out filtering and the final solution for lime treatment of shrubs.

Spider mites are no less annoying and appear during the hot season. Most often this happens when the plants are not watered sufficiently.

A good folk remedy is the preparation of the following solutions - wormwood, tobacco and yarrow-based. Treatment with these agents leads to almost 100% death of parasitic insects.

How to trim

This measure helps to form the crown correctly, stimulates the appearance of a large number of flowers and maintains the decorative appearance of the plant. If everything is done correctly, the rose will bloom almost continuously throughout the growing season.

Pruning is carried out in the spring and fall and consists in removing dead or frostbitten shoots. Also, the ends of the lashes are trimmed to strong external buds.

Preparing for the winter period

It is necessary to start covering plants at the moment when the average daily temperature is set at around -5 ° C. Early hiding can lead to re-growth in the bush.

All work is recommended to be carried out in calm dry weather. The plants are detached from the supports, the foliage is removed and the damaged shoots are cut off. All lashes are tied with twine and laid on a bedding material, which can be spruce branches or dry leaves.

Placing plants on bare ground is not recommended. The scourges are pressed against the soil and are additionally covered with the same spruce branches and dry grasses. Sand or earth is used to cover the base of the shrubs.

Last but not least, cover the plants with polyethylene, roofing felt or any other waterproof material.

It is important not to forget to leave an air gap between the roses with covering agents.

How to care

There are basic care requirements for climbing roses. For example, you need to do regular watering, pruning climbing roses, insect repelling and fertilizing. Also, the plant needs high-quality shelter for the winter. Experienced gardeners recommend installing climbing supports for climbing roses if they are of great height and width. Sometimes the plant needs a transplant, for example, because the type of soil did not fit. for this, in the last month of autumn or in spring, when there are still no buds, the bush is separated from the support and passes in a circle with a shovel. This is done due to the wide root system.

It is imperative to keep the roots intact during this procedure.

Top dressing

Such work must be carried out during the first fall, using fertilizers with potassium substances. These can be ready-made substances or an infusion of wood ash. A year later, it is already necessary to apply organic and mineral substances in turn. And in the third year of life, it is recommended to use exclusively organic fertilizing. It can be manure or wood ash.During the active growth phase, the plant needs five fertilization times. During flowering, such procedures are not allowed.

Watering

It is recommended to water roses once every 7-10 days. The shrub requires 20 liters of water. For a longer preservation of moisture in the soil, a small earthen wall can be dug around the trunk. Three days after watering, the soil must be loosened 6 centimeters in depth. This helps more air to penetrate to the roots.

Disease and pest control

As a rule, roses are highly resistant to pests, but aphids and spider mites still settle on it. If there are not so many of them, then it is better to remove it yourself using folk remedies. In the event that there are too many such pests, it is recommended to use a soap solution or preparations with a chemical composition. It is better to do this when there is no wind and a lot of sun. In addition to the listed insects, many others may appear. To avoid such a problem as much as possible, chemistry treatment should be carried out in a timely manner, and marigolds can also be planted next to the bush.

The most common diseases are black spot, gray mold, powdery mildew, coniotrium and bacterial cancer.

Pruning

Pruning should be done to achieve better decorative features, improved flowering and a more accurate crown shape. It is especially necessary to work with vegetative stems carefully, because, as a rule, last year's shoulder straps bloom. Pruning is carried out in both spring and fall. In the spring, those branches that have died off are removed, and in the fall they cut off what is above the strong bud.

How often and what needs to be removed depends on the variety. Those specimens that bloom once a year should be pruned so as to retain 5 one-year and two-year shoots. Those that bloom several times a season are recommended to be pruned, keeping about 4 annual stems and 7 flowering ones. There are cases when shoulder straps have successfully overwintered and flowers appear on them. At the onset of March, pruning should be carried out in such a way that the top with fruitful buds is preserved.

How to prune a climbing rose also depends on its age. Only young specimens usually need such a frequent procedure.

Climbing roses after flowering

Climbing roses have faded - what to do?

In early autumn, climbing rose bushes begin to gradually prepare for winter. From the end of August, they cease to be watered, the soil around them is loosened, nitrogen in the dressing is replaced with potassium. The tops of unripe shoots are cut off. All climbing roses hibernate under cover, but for this they must first be removed from the support and laid on the ground. A young bush can be laid easily, but an old, powerful climbing rose can be bent to the ground for more than one day, you may need a whole week for this, and the process should take place at above-zero temperatures, since even with a slight frost, the stems become fragile and break. Consider this.

How to cover climbing roses for the winter

They cover the rose when the temperature drops to -5 ºC, you should not do this earlier, because the rose will not have time to get hardened, moreover, it can grow out or start growing, being too long under the shelter without air. You need to cover climbing roses in dry, calm weather. Remove the roses from the support, clean the branches from the foliage, cut off the damaged shoots, tie the lashes with a rope and carefully lay them on a bed of spruce branches or dry leaves (in no case put roses on bare ground!).

Press or pin the roses to the ground, cover them on top with spruce branches, dry leaves or dry grass, cover the base of the bush with sand or earth, then cover the lying roses with plastic wrap, lutrasil, roofing felt or some other waterproof material so that between the rose and the film there was an air gap.
