Ito hybrids: what are these peonies, their correct planting, care and reproduction

Rejuvenation, pruning and tying bushes

Herbaceous peonies are durable, can delight for decades, but due to thickening and overgrowth, the quality of their flowering usually deteriorates with age, it begins to suffer on bushes older than 7-10 years. It is better to divide the bushes of varietal herbaceous peonies regularly, with a frequency of 1 time in 5-8 years. The division of the bushes is carried out only in late summer or early autumn.

Peony varieties with unstable shoots, as well as bushes growing in open areas, with the beginning of flowering under the weight of the heads, without timely garters, quickly fall apart and lose their attractiveness. Luxurious flowers lying on the ground are not the most pleasant sight. Therefore, at the beginning of the growth of peduncles and at the stage of budding, peonies are tied up so as not to allow the branches to bend, bend, break.

There are special supports on sale that are installed on the bush, but you can tie peonies to simple pegs installed along the perimeter of the bush, wrapping the bush with soft twine or cords in a circular manner at the budding stage and raising the circle as the flowers bloom and flower stalks grow.

Removing flowers from peonies is carried out in different ways, depending on whether the flowers are cut into bouquets or left on the bush to reveal their full decorative effect:

  1. For bouquets, branches are cut before they bloom, after coloring the outer petals in a color characteristic of the variety - in simple and semi-double varieties, or after opening, folding the lower petals - in densely double varieties. In any herbaceous peony, no more than half of all flowers can be removed, because pruning all shoots leads to a disruption in the process of laying renewing buds. Cut flowers with legs up to 40 cm long, be sure to leave a shoot with 2-3 leaves in the bush. Peonies are cut in the early morning, only on fine days, immediately placing the flowers in the water and coolness. For bouquets, the cuts are renewed under water.
  2. To obtain larger and higher quality flowers, you can remove the lateral buds, leaving only the central one on each shoot.
  3. Withering flowers are cut after the petals begin to drop. It is impossible to leave withered flowers on the bush, as this greatly increases the risk of spreading diseases and infection of the plant. If you want to let the seeds ripen, then 1-2 flowers from the first are left on the bush, removing the rest. Cutting of faded peduncles is carried out not to the base, but leaving the leafy part of the shoots for the formation of buds.
  4. On new bushes of peonies, for the first two years after planting, it is not advisable to allow flowering to form a powerful rhizome and strong buds of renewal.

Pre-winter pruning of a peony is a mandatory measure. But it's not worth it too early. It is better to postpone pruning of peony bushes until the onset of stable frost. All aboveground parts are removed from plants, leaving hemp 3-4 cm above the buds of renewal, almost at the level of the soil. All cut parts of herbaceous peonies are burned, not leaving on the site and not using for composting. It is advisable to sprinkle the remains of the bush with wood ash to prevent the spread of diseases.

These plants are very popular, as they are unpretentious in terms of growing and caring for them. Peonies are able to grow in one place for many years without transplanting. The number of existing varieties of these luxurious flowers is enormous.Peonies with a very unusual name "Pastelegance

Description

Today, Pastelegance peonies are one of the most beautiful among most other flowers. This variety was bred in 1989 by a talented breeder from the United States, Bill Seidl.

In Russia, this hybrid appeared relatively recently. In 2013, the Pastelegance peony was presented at a flower exhibition in Moscow, where it immediately won the hearts of many avid gardeners and just flower lovers. Despite the multiplication of this variety in many European flower nurseries, it is still a rare species with a high cost.

Peonies "Pastelegance" have a unique pink-peach color. Their unusual shade resembles the color of tender baked milk. Inside the large and rounded petals are many small ones, which together create an attractive tousled mass. The diameter of the flower reaches 20 centimeters. Golden stamens surrounded by red pistils give the flowers a special charm. "Pastelegance" has a subtle, subtle vanilla aroma.

Colour: Peach / Pink /

Breeding year: 1989

Flower shape: Terry

Peduncle height: 75 cm

Flower diameter: 21 cm

Flowering period: Early / Middle /

The price is still high, but it will last for several more years - until we multiply it. This season the offer for sale is minimal.

The flower is stunning pastel creamy pinkish. The peony has matte large petals with pinkish strokes on the inside, closer to the base.

When dissolving, first the outer petals open, then the inner ones also open, through which golden stamens are visible.

There is nothing of the kind at the moment! ‘Pastelegance’ is special and unique like no other peony. He is even the favorite peony of the hybridizer itself. It is always difficult to describe the color of a flower - champagne, pastel, peach, salmon and creamy tones can all be found in these huge, magical, semi-double flowers. Every day of its flowering shows new sides of this peony. The outer petals are always uniform and round, while the center of the petals shows more variation with ruffles and playful edges. Thick and robust stems hold huge flowers well. Large and wide foliage with its deep dark green color is an indicator of strong health. A very fertile flower.

Nina Kudelkina Thanks a lot for the peony. I got everything, the material is super. Special thanks to Olga for her kindness and responsiveness. my order was very late, there was no hope. but a miracle happens. THANKS

Natalia Chigirinskaya Good day! I bought a peony from a collector. This is my second attempt. The first time the bud was light lemon. It turned out to be Lemon Chiffon. The second purchase is alarming, since the bud color is also light lemon. So I decided to ask you: Could this be a feature of the first flowering?

Anna Borisovna Tell me, Natalya, have you bought PASTELEGANCE from us? I can't vouch for other growers, but in my first year this variety also had a slightly lighter bud than in the second year of flowering.

Natalia Chigirinskaya Good afternoon, dear flower growers. I bought a peony root "Pastelegans". The bud is still light cream, closer to "Lemon Chiffon" in color. Tell me, is this color possible? Or does it already show a peach hue in the bud?

Olga A very beautiful peony.

Raisa Zhmurova The tenderness of the flower is mesmerizing! The rarest peach shade! I hope I will be lucky enough to become the owner of this miracle.

Anna Borisovna This variety is already growing on our site, but until it blooms it will not appear on sale. I really like it and really look forward to the summer!

Svetlana Sushkova I liked your peony very much. When and how much will it cost?

Planting peonies in autumn

The optimal time for planting peonies is from late August to mid-September. It can move in both directions in different climatic conditions. The choice is related to the characteristics of the growth and rooting of flowers. Peonies, planted in autumn, build up the root system in cool conditions.Their buds are preparing for hibernation, nutrients are not wasted on green mass and flowering. Autumn rains will provide ample moisture.

Autumn care

The main work related to the care of peonies falls on the spring and summer. During this period, watering, feeding, weeding and loosening are carried out. At the end of the growing season, the plants are prepared for winter. Mature shrubs require a minimum of care. They must be cut and covered with wood ash. In cold regions, tree peonies protect from frost with a spruce tree hut or make a shelter from non-woven material.

Another point that inexperienced gardeners overlook is the renewal buds, which are at a shallow depth, eventually approach the surface. If initially they were lowered by 5 cm, then with the growth of roots and erosion of the soil, they may be 1-2 cm from the soil level. In winter, the buds will suffer from frost. Before the onset of cold weather, it is necessary to paddle the earth to the bushes.

What year after planting do peonies bloom?

The impatience of gardeners waiting for the first flowers to appear on the peony bushes is understandable. The appearance time of peonies depends on the age of the planting material. If you bought a 3-4 year old seedling and planted it in well fertilized soil in the fall, there is a chance you will see flowers in a year. The tree-like peony blooms even later, for 5-6 years. According to the rules, when peonies begin to bloom for the first time, their buds are cut off. This makes it possible to direct all forces to the development of the root.

The flowering period depends on the variety: the early ones throw out the buds in early June, the middle ones - in the second half of the month, the late ones - in the first days of July. The flowering period is 8-15 days. It depends on the variety, terry forms bloom longer than simple ones. The real record holder, delighting with its buds for almost a month, is the Bartzella variety. ITO-hybrid with yellow petals blooms along with medium peonies, and withers with late ones.

How to plant store-bought peonies in spring

What to do with a seedling bought in a box in the spring? It makes no sense to wait for autumn, because peonies take root during spring planting. At the beginning of the growing season, the soil temperature is still low, so the plant will have time to grow roots before the buds come to life. The success of growing primarily depends on the purchase of quality planting material. When choosing, the information on the packaging is evaluated. A conscientious manufacturer must indicate:

  • peony variety;
  • number and age of divisions;
  • description of the plant;
  • planting instructions.

The roots of herbaceous tulips are sold in plastic bags. Through the transparent film, you can see their color and condition, as well as the number of renewal buds. There must be at least two of them. The normal length of slender lateral roots is 5-6 cm.

Planting technology in spring

The place for the purchased plant is selected in advance. It should be well lit, not damp. The roots of flowers grow for a considerable distance, therefore a deep and spacious hole is required, which is filled with:

  • drainage layer (sand, broken brick, gravel);
  • garden soil with compost, ash, superphosphate.

The hole is 2/3 filled with soil, the root is laid. It should be 3-5 cm from its buds to the surface. The hole is filled with the remaining soil. The seedling is watered abundantly (10-15 liters of water). The top is mulched with compost. The first month requires regular hydration.

Planting of peonies from a box, grown in containers, occurs by the transshipment method. This is the least traumatic way. Usually, by the time of planting, foliage appears on the stems. In some cases, buds are tied, which must be removed. A hole is dug under the seedling, drainage is arranged at the bottom. The peony is carefully removed from the container by pulling it by the edges of a plastic bag. The plastic is torn apart, and the seedling with the earth is placed in a pit. The free space is covered with a fertile mixture according to the recipe for a conventional planting. Sprinkle with plenty of water.

Characteristics of species and varieties of crops

There are a lot of species. In general, they can be divided into the following groups:

  • Not terry - petals are arranged in 1 or 2 rows.The flower is large with many prominent stamens.
  • Semi-double - this group of varieties has large flowers with 7 rows of petals, and the stamens are distributed throughout the flower.
  • Japanese - stamens are collected in the center of the flower, form a kind of ball. The petals can be in one row or in several.
  • Anemiform (mixed type) - the lower petals are wide, located in 1-2 rows, and the upper ones are shorter and have a rounded shape. The species was obtained by crossing Japanese and terry peony.
  • Terry spherical - many petals form a hemisphere, and when fully opened, a ball.
  • Spherical, resembling a crown - the petals form 3 tiers from the bottom of the flower, and on top a ring of semicircular petals is obtained. Usually, the bottom and top are different in shade.
  • Reminiscent of a rose - the petals are round, large.

All the variety of varieties can be attributed to any of these groups.
