Landing features
Landing place
Miss America prefers sunny locations, but can thrive well in slightly shaded areas. If you plant a flower in the shade, it will bloom poorly, and the baskets will be small in size.
It is very important to plant the plant in a well-ventilated area. Good air circulation will prevent the development of diseases in the plant.
The flower is not recommended to be planted near trees and shrubs. Its root system needs a lot of space. Also, you should not plant a crop near buildings. This can be detrimental to the plant. The heat that radiates from the walls can cause overheating. Therefore, planting should be carried out at a distance of 2 meters from any buildings.
Soil selection
Miss America prefers cultivated soil. It is desirable that they are loamy, and the groundwater is deep. If the area is with clay soil, it is recommended to add some sand, peat and compost to the hole before planting. If sandy, add a small amount of humus mixed with clay. The plant loves slightly acidic soil. Therefore, in acidic soils, lime is recommended.
The peony develops in peat soils. The culture will not grow on them. A way out of the situation can be the addition of ash, sand and organic matter.
Landing features
The soil is prepared a month before planting the peonies. Depending on its type, the necessary components are introduced. Since the culture has a well-developed root system, it is required to dig a deep and wide hole. Its parameters: 60 x 60 cm.The pit is filled by about two-thirds with the following components:
The components are taken in equal proportions.
Then make wood ash weighing 1 kg and 300 g of superphosphate. A layer of garden soil is poured on top of these components. The plant is planted in such a way that the lower buds are 4-5 cm above the soil surface.If peonies are planted in several rows, it is necessary to leave gaps of at least 70 cm between the bushes. The plant is watered. For each bush, it is necessary to spend up to a bucket of settled water. When the soil settles slightly after watering, it is necessary to fill up the garden soil.
During the first year after planting, peonies do not bloom. They may also appear weak and slightly lethargic. This is normal. During this period, the plant grows root mass, so all nutrients go to the roots.
Use in landscape design
Human activities (plowing the steppes, grazing, etc.) have led to the fact that the wild peony now belongs to plants in need of conservation. Breeding in parks and gardens helps preserve this species by promoting its distribution.
In landscape design, the narrow-leaved peony has excellently proven itself, the double variety of which is especially good in combination with broom bushes, cereals and perennial flax. It looks good on slides, rock gardens, mixborders. These flowers are planted both in composition and individually. You can place several different varieties of peonies on the same flower bed, blooming at different times. The narrow-leaved peony, planted among stones or against the background of a talus, looks very beautiful. Photos of all kinds of compositions with this plant show how many options for using its decorative properties exist.
Peony varieties
There are 34 species in the Peony genus, and more than 5000 varieties have been registered to date. These are real favorites! Stately, stately, fragrant handsome men. You look at the peony bush, and you can't take your eyes off - as if a huge bouquet appeared by itself in the garden ...
The story of my hobby began about forty years ago. I was still a schoolgirl when my mother bought the first piece of peony from my grandmother in the market.She dreamed of having a white terry fragrant peony in her garden - such a rose from a friend, but she refused to share it. We have been waiting for flowering for several years. And now bright pink flowers bloom on our "white" peony.
Having condemned, my mother again buys in the market (there was nowhere else to buy) another "white" peony ... In short, history repeated itself several times. Later, in our garden, several huge bushes of pink peonies without a name grew.
Now, having a collection of more than two hundred different varieties and hybrids, I have not been able to identify the variety of that first peony. I think that this is some kind of viable peony of French selection.
I began to collect my collection of peonies in the mid-90s of the last century after I saw the book "Peonies in the Garden" at a book fair. I bought two books at once - myself and my friend Lyuba. I studied everything from cover to cover, read and dreamed about those peonies that were depicted on the colored tabs. Lyuba gave me the addresses of the collectors, and I bought my first peonies from them. At that time, we had clematis, roses, irises, gladioli, hyacinths, daffodils, tulips - several dozen varieties of each crop. But peonies have prevailed over everyone, since they are less laborious to grow - they do not need to be planted and dug up every year! Therefore, this culture is suitable for almost everyone, because a peony needs to be planted once, but correctly, and later it will grow and will delight you for many, many years with its lush flowering! Depending on the variety, the bush can bloom in the 2-3rd year, and some bloom a little later, for example, we waited 4 years for Sable to bloom, but not in vain - this is the darkest of all existing black and red peonies.
How to make peonies bloom longer
I heard on the radio how the presenter said that peonies bloom for only two weeks. This is true for only one peony bush. We have peonies blooming for almost two months, starting from April 18-25 (depending on the arrival of spring) and until June 10-15. Species, for example, the Kavakh peony, begin to bloom, then the Mlokosevich peony blooms, then the buds of the narrow-leaved peony hybrids open (these include the Nozgei variety - last year it bloomed on May 4). Following them, tree peonies bloom, at the end of May - American hybrids: Red Charm, Red Grace, Angelo Cobb Freeborn, Etched Salmon, Carol and Henry Boxtos, Cytheria, Ellen Cowley (there are up to 40-50 flowers on one bush!). Continuing the baton of varieties with coral flowers: Coral Supreme, Coral Charm, Pink Haven Coral. Then comes the time of milky-flowering peonies, among them there are many peonies with a Japanese flower shape, they are very light and do not require a garter: Jan Van Leeuwen, West Elton, Hot Chokolat, Doo Tell, Cream Puff, Midnight Sun and the unsurpassed Pearl variety bred in the USSR scattering.
ITO hybrids that have recently appeared on sale and among collectors bloom in the mid-early period: Fest Erayval, Bartsella, Julia Rose, Scarlet Haven, Garden Treasure. White and cream beauty Gladys Hudson has large glossy leaves, by which it is easy to recognize her after flowering. In mid-late periods, terry milk-flowered peonies bloom: Raspberry Sunday, Pink Jazz, Pastel, Myra Mac Ro, Dresden Pink (a very long-flowering variety), and they fill the garden with the scent of roses, because this is how the varieties of this group of peonies smell.
Peony variety Arkady Gaidar
Among the late-flowering white-pink peonies, the raspberry Arkady Gaidar stands out - a tall cut variety that my mother really liked. Many peonies are named after prominent people, and she does not remember all the names. Last year she saw this variety for the first time, I cut several flowers of different varieties and put them on the window in a vase, during the night they fully opened, and my mother asked in amazement in the morning: "What is this?" Hearing the answer, she shook her head approvingly: "This is Arkady!"
In the end, I would like to give some advice. This culture is for patient florists, since several years pass from the moment the plant is planted to full flowering.
Therefore, you need to purchase planting material from trusted firms and from reputable collectors.
Reproduction
In most cases, the peony is propagated by dividing the bushes. Ideal breeding material is specimens from 5 years of age and older. Then less time and effort is spent, and at the same time the plant rejuvenates. Peonies are mainly divided in autumn.
Sprinkle the buds with soil, leaving about 0.05 m of soil above them. All cuts will certainly be sprinkled with wood ash. If not used, the seedling may rot. The last step is backfilling a small earthen slide, to which peat or humus is mixed
Important: excessive compaction of the earth is unacceptable, because of this, the roots may be damaged.
Quite often, peony and seeds are used for propagation. This method is laborious and takes more time. In addition, there is a considerable danger that the crops will not sprout. But any experienced florist will certainly try his hand at solving such a problem. And many have successfully overcome it.
But thin-leaved peonies are rarely propagated by seed. And the point here is not only the laboriousness of the method. It usually takes 5 years to wait for the first flowering. And in some cases - another year more. Breeding with root cuttings is even less commonly used. This procedure is carried out in the fall, after waiting for the final formation of the roots. Planting of cuttings is carried out in increments of 0.6-0.7 m.
Plant care
If the planting is carried out in the fall, then before the onset of cold weather, young bushes are covered with a layer of leaves and straw. Adult plants do not always need a pre-winter shelter; many types of ITO-hybrids endure frosts down to -20 ° C in snowy winters.
In the spring, if necessary (2-3 years after planting the bush), nitrogen-potassium fertilizers are applied to the root zone of the Canari-hybrid AID-diamond. In autumn, the plants are fed with complex phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, which are supplemented with trace elements.
Adult flowers are watered after the onset of heat. Up to 2 buckets of water are poured under the bush every week. Young hybrids need watering much more often, but in smaller volumes. The root zone of peonies is loosened after the appearance of a dried crust, at the same time weeds are removed.
Important! To preserve moisture, the roots of the plants are covered with a layer of mulch. ITO bushes rarely get sick, but they can still sometimes suffer from root rot, powdery mildew and pests
For the prevention of fungal diseases in the spring in the evening, the branches of flowers are treated with solutions of fungicidal biological products - phytosporin, trichodermin, alirin, gamair. These same drugs are used to fight disease. To exterminate insects, insecticide solutions of Actara, Actellik, Decis, Thunder-2, Confidor are used

Care
In order for the shrub to fully develop and delight with large lush flowers, it is imperative to make additional fertilizing, periodically water and mulch the soil.
How to water?
The variety is drought tolerant, but moderately moist soil is considered ideal conditions for the plant.
Moistening the earth is especially important when buds begin to set on the shrub and the flowering process starts
Do not forget that the shrub especially needs careful maintenance at this time. And also it is necessary to increase the amount of watering. Instead of 1 bucket, 2 buckets of water are consumed. In the fall, when the budding begins, the peony also needs more liquid.
Fertilizer introduction
For 2 years after transplantation, nutrients are introduced by the foliar method. Experienced flower growers recommend using special formulations for peonies. "Kemira" or "Baikal-M", of which many growers speak positively, will be perfect.
After the specified period has elapsed, begin to add mineral-type fertilizing. The first portion of nutrients is applied in early spring, when the ground warms up after frost. At this time, the shrub forms a green mass. The next time, top dressing is added when bud formation begins. Further fertilizers are applied after flowering. Experts recommend feeding the shrub with organic compounds after pruning.
Mulch
Be sure to mulch the soil after transplanting. It is necessary for the comfortable development of the plant and its protection from parasites and pests. A layer of mulch is used to form the land around the shrub. It is advisable to carry out the work in spring or autumn, when the flowering process ends. It is best to use organic:
- sawdust;
- compost;
- rotted straw.
Peony Miss America (Paeonia Miss America) - what is this variety
This is an American hybrid, which was bred by 2 breeders - Mann John R. and van Steen Julius J. The variety was obtained back in 1936. Despite the fact that the crop was bred in the United States, Holland represents it on the flower market, namely, the organization Greenworks.
The peony of this variety is highly decorative.
Brief description and characteristics
Peony America is a herbaceous crop that belongs to the class of milk-flowering plants. It is characterized by strong roots and sturdy stems, which have a weak tendency to branch.
The culture is a compact hemispherical bush. It is covered with dark green glossy leaves. Strong shoots do not need to be tied up, as they do not lean to the ground during flowering.
The plant has beautiful snow-white flowers. At the same time, at the beginning they are distinguished by a pale pink color. The buds are characterized by large size and folded petals. After full blooming, the peonies become snow-white and resemble large bowls with golden yellow stamens and green pistils.
According to the description, the Miss America peony is a medium-flowering perennial that reaches a maximum of 90 cm in height. Buds appear on this plant from May to June. Flowering is profuse and long lasting.
Important! The peony of this variety is characterized by high resistance to frost. The culture is able to withstand temperatures as low as -40 ° C. The plant fits well into landscape design

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Key benefits of culture include:
- excellent decorative properties;
- long flowering period;
- the possibility of using in landscape design;
- sophisticated aroma;
- resistance to severe frosts.
At the same time, peony America differs in some disadvantages. Bushes are capable of suffering from attacks of pests or diseases. In such a situation, it is impossible to do without the use of chemicals.
Use in landscape design
Paeonia of this cultivar is suitable for planting alone or in groups. The plant can be planted to create classic flower beds, or used to decorate flower beds and mixborders.
Note! Designers often use culture to decorate rock gardens. Plants of suitable shades should be used as additions. White inflorescences go well with scarlet and dark red tones, so peonies can be combined with carnations
To emphasize their freshness, you can use irises, bells, honeysuckle as companions. Also, flowers can be planted next to conifers.

The subtleties of reproduction
Planting material for breeding peony "Highlight" is prepared in spring, when the plant comes out of dormancy and "comes to life". However, it is not recommended to plant young seedlings in a permanent place in the spring, since there is a high probability of damage to the delicate roots during planting, which will make the peony weak and unviable. The hot spring sun, which will dry out the sprout, will aggravate the situation.
In the spring, planting material is placed in pots with a weak nutritional composition, kept until April in a cold room (glazed loggia, garage), at the end of April, planted with a pot in light soil near bushes that create shade. Seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place in late August - early September, when the roots of the plant will get stronger and will not be injured when planting. Autumn rains keep the soil moist, which is beneficial for the rooting of the peony.
Breeding is carried out in several ways:
- pruning;
- parts of the root;
- layering;
- air layering;
- seeds.
Harvesting of the cut is done in stages.
- In late March - early April, the peony rhizome digs in at a distance of 25-30 centimeters from the stems.
- With a sharp shovel or secateurs, the adventitious roots are cut off with a thickness of more than 1.5 centimeters.
- The cut off roots are divided into 10-12 centimeters with several adventitious roots and 3-4 renewal buds.
- Each section is carefully examined, the found rotten roots are removed.
- Sprinkle fresh cuts on the cuttings and on the main rhizome with crushed coal.
- Before planting in the ground, the planting material is kept for some time in a solution of potassium permanganate (3 grams per 10 liters of water).
For quick survival, it is recommended that the delenka be dipped in a solution with the following composition: 2 tablets of heteroauxin are dissolved in 10 liters of water, 50 grams of copper sulfate and clay are added. A solution of the consistency of thick sour cream is prepared, the planting material is immersed in it, then the cuttings are taken out of the solution and dried.
Peonies "Marie Lemoine": variety description, planting and care
Peonies are herbaceous perennials that take root well in our country. The most luxurious varieties are mainly hybrids, which not only winter well in harsh climatic conditions, but also bloom fabulously. Peonies of the "Marie Lemoine" variety are milky-flowered and deserve special attention. In this article, we will take a closer look at their description, the nuances of planting and care at home.
Description
Milk-flowered peonies differ from all other varieties in that they have larger and lush buds. As for the "Marie Lemoine" variety, it is a terry snow-white-pink peonies with a creamy undertone, the diameter of the flowers of which reaches almost 20 cm. The flowers have a spherical lush shape.
In height, peonies of this variety, as a rule, reach 70-90 cm, their leaves are lush, bright green in color. Flowering is one-time, but abundant and prolonged, later.
Landing subtleties
For lactic-flowered hybrid peonies, it is best to select loamy, slightly acidic soils that are far from groundwater. If the soil is clay, then it is necessary to add sand to it, and if it is sandy, then clay. In very acidic soils, a small amount of lime is usually applied.
Good air circulation is very important to prevent the plant from getting sick while growing in a particular area. That is why peonies are best planted in open areas, away from any buildings, tall trees and buildings.
Milk-flowered peonies are very fond of illuminated places, but, of course, they should not be planted under the rays of the scorching sun. The ideal option is the semi-shade placement of the flower, where it will be most comfortable. If the peony is planted in a very shady place, then, of course, it will grow, but you should not expect flowering from it.
Peonies are usually planted in the spring or autumn season. Young plants should always be covered. But adults - by necessity.
Landing nuances:
Pits for peonies are dug 50 by 50 or 60 by 60, a layer of expanded clay, drainage or, if necessary, sand is usually added to their bottom. The layer should not be more than 15 cm.
Humus, compost and wood ash are also added to the pits, which further make the soil more fertile for plant growth. All components are mixed and covered with earth so that about 12-15 cm remains to the edges of the fossa.
Then a peony seedling (young cut) should be placed in the hole, deepening by about 5-7 cm
It is very important not to deepen the plant too much, otherwise it will not bloom, but only grow greens.
Further, the rhizomes of the peony should be covered with earth and carefully tamp the earth around the seedling so that it “sits" tightly in the ground.
Then you need to make a hole around the seedling and water everything abundantly. When the soil subsides, you can add a little earth to it.
Reproduction
It is recommended to use the method of dividing the bush in order to propagate it quickly and as safely as possible. For reproduction, peonies are used, the age of which is from 3 to 4 years. Choose plants with a healthy and well-developed root system. Be sure to inspect the flower for signs of disease. Use only healthy peonies for propagation.
It is necessary to carefully separate a small part with roots from the mother shrub. The shrub for transplanting must have roots no shorter than 10 cm. And also several young buds must be present.
It is recommended to disinfect the root system using a potassium permanganate solution. It will protect the flower from diseases and harmful insects that live in the soil. They also use special formulations that can be purchased at a gardening store.

Varieties
It is worth starting a conversation about Rock peony varieties with the "Silk Veil". The plant looks like a crown. In the middle of the white petals is the dark red center of the flower. The tree type of peony is distinguished by its enviable resistance to cold.
The main part of each petal is white, while at the base the flowers are painted in cherry tones. According to various sources, the "Silk Veil" can withstand frosts down to -30 degrees. In any case, in most of the territory of our country, a winter shelter for a plant is not required. The only exception is cold winters with little snow.
The Temple Gate variety may also be an attractive choice. An adult bush of this plant rises up to 2 m.At the same time, its flowers can reach 0.2 m in diameter. And frost resistance is generally beyond praise: the plant can survive wintering even at -40 degrees. This greatly simplifies the cultivation of peony even in the most climatically unfavorable regions.
Large milk petals of this variety look luxurious. The foliage retains a lush openwork appearance until the beginning of autumn.
The Purple Ocean is no less beautiful. Its crown-like flowers can grow up to 0.13 x 0.16 m.Red petals with a purple tint look bright. The height of the bush can reach 1.5 m. The plant emits a refined scent. Flowering under normal conditions begins in mid-May. It can last from 14 to 20 days.
"Fairy of the Moon" forms strong shoots that grow up to 1.5-2 m. The diameter of a plant can be up to 1.8 m. Flowers, whose diameter ranges from 0.18 to 0.2 m, sometimes look delicate. The delicate aroma is quite consistent with the pleasant coloration. Flowering starts late. The variety is quite resistant to winter. But still it is recommended to cultivate where the climate is not very harsh, while covering the plantings of the "Fairies of the Moon" for the winter. The danger is too early awakening of hibernating buds. Because of this, they often freeze over in early spring. The optimal protection is considered:
- woody foliage;
- ground bark;
- jute.
You can propagate the "Fairy" using cuttings, cuttings and layering. Some growers use grafting. But the best thing is to share the roots. Planting is done in the last days of August.
Live Blush is another attractive Chinese peony variety. The plant looks like a lotus. It turns into a charming lilac-pink color. Purple streaks are found at the bottom of all the petals. In terms of resistance to cold, the culture is at least not inferior to other varieties.
