Peculiarities
Petunia is found naturally in the rainforests of South America. A plant with double flowers is nothing more than a hybrid, the life of which does not exceed one year. It was bred by breeders, and therefore it differs from its relative in the height of the bush, which rarely exceeds 50 cm.On average, the greenery is 15-20 cm high.
Petunia differs from other flowers in the abundance of flowers and their shape. Some of them resemble roses, others look like petals chaotically gathered into a single flower. The differences depend on the plant variety belonging to the Solanaceae family. From other varieties of the genus, terry petunia always has more than five petals. As for the flower, the color can be very diverse, from white and pale pink to almost black and purple. All varieties were bred artificially, while depending on the type of plant, the size of the flowers may be different. For example, along with large-flowered ten-centimeter specimens, you can also find varieties with small flowers.
The shape of the floral edge varies. It can be corrugated or slightly wavy, or even completely cut. The structure of the flower is velvety; during formation, it can form folds. The coloring of the same colors can be either one- or two-color. For example, on the flower beds of gardeners, you can see lush beauties with flowers of violet-white, white-burgundy, pink with a burgundy center color. Sometimes the color resembles blots, sometimes it is a contrasting color along the corrugated edge of the flower. The foliage of the plant is small but lush. As a rule, during the flowering period, almost half of it is covered with flowers.
Terry petunia has a weakly branched root system and vegetative organs. The roots are straight, but not long. The leaves are covered with fine hairs, they are asymmetrical and can differ in shape on one bush.
Instructions for growing petunias tumbelin
Tumbelins reproduce vegetatively, although breeders work with petunia seeds, crossing them to develop new varietal varieties. In specialized stores, tumblers of various varieties are sold as seedlings that have been grown from cuttings. You can propagate petunias of this group by cuttings on your own, by cutting cuttings at the end of summer and rooting them in containers with a substrate.
Landing rules
Like other petunias, tumblers are light-loving crops, so it is recommended to plant it on the sunny side of the garden plot, or on a south-facing balcony. Penumbra is also well tolerated with these colors.
The required space for a tumbelina seedling is approximately equal to 1-1.5 sq.m. Each planting hole requires 3 to 7 liters of nutrient potting soil to fill. The ideal soil composition for successful growing petunias should be light, slightly acidic and nutritious.
The optimal time for planting tumblers in open ground or on an open balcony is May. This varietal group of petunias is able to withstand bad weather and strong winds and recover safely, which compares favorably with other ampelous varieties, whose shoots are usually damaged on windy days.
Basic care requirements
The flowering period of tumbelin occurs in the second half of summer and the first half of autumn, until October. In the southern regions, petunias of this group bloom earlier - already in June. In general, tumblers are considered late flowering varieties. It is possible to extend the period of their flowering by promptly removing dried and withering flowers. Tumbelins are extremely sensitive to watering and do best when watered twice a day on hot summer days. It is best to do this in the morning and evening. If it is not possible to carry out daily watering, for example, during your absence, it will not be superfluous to take care of the irrigation system, otherwise there is a risk of losing moisture-loving plants.
Since tumblers are terry varieties of petunias, they require more mineral fertilizers than simple varieties. They are especially sensitive to potassium deficiency, so it is recommended to choose complexes rich in this important element. Top dressing should be applied strictly according to the instructions, which are always contained on the package with the mixture.
At the end of the season, you can cut the cuttings, place them in containers with a substrate - during the winter they will take root and by the next season they will be ready to be transplanted into pots with soil.
Feature of this species
Tumbelina is a product of Japanese breeders, and more specifically, it is grown by the company Suntory.
This flower is semi-ample, double (such flowers are also called double).
Semi-ample varieties are sometimes denoted by the tricky word "trailing". They build up not only long hanging shoots (though not as long as traditional ampels), but also a rounded cap of flowers. They can be used both for hanging pots and for an earth flower bed or even a floor flowerpot.
In some stores, the tumbler is called a cascade hybrid. The shoots of the variety are strong. All the sellers assured that they could endure bad weather. Indeed, the summer wind did not break them (and we have it quite strong, since the house, although multi-storey, is located in the village).
The diameter of the flowers is from 6 to 7 cm.That is, you can see that this species is not the most large-flowered - for comparison, in the terry petunia Pirouette, the diameter of flowers reaches more than 10 cm.
During the flowering period, this plant has a strong and pleasant aroma. A large number of flowers bloom on the shoots at the same time.
An interesting fact: when it starts to rain in summer and the temperature drops, tumbelina stops flowering, and when the sun returns, the bush warms up and continues to delight with its beauty.
Varieties that you can buy from us
Priscilla. Probably the most popular variety in our country. It has delicate lavender flowers, the petals of which are decorated with purple veins.
Maria. Lilac pastel flower, unlike Priscilla, has no veins, but is uniformly colored.
Katarina. A variety with solid colors of a rich crimson hue.
Clara. A very delicate variety with pink petals speckled with red veins.
Eliza. Delicate pink flowers that, upon closer inspection, turn out to be chameleons: the tips of the petals are darker than the centers, and the inside of the flowers is generally almost white.
Anna. Each petal of these flowers has a deep pink hue, as well as a snow-white border, which makes Anna one of the most decorative tumbelines. By the way, this variety also has a "cousin" - Bella tumbelina, which also has a white border on the petals, but the basic shade of flowers is dark fuchsia.
Francesca. Unlike the previous variety, these flowers have a delicately blurred transition from the crimson center of the petals to the pink edge.
Cherry Ripple (the name from English is translated as "cherry ripples"). A rare variety with "striped", red and white flowers. By the way, he also has "cousins" - Damson Ripple, whose base color is dark purple (in translation "Damson" means "prunes"), as well as Rosie Ripple with intense pink centers of flowers.
Inga. "Scarlet flower", and very bright, does not lose its decorative effect for a long time. By the way, if you look closely, it turns out that red is only the center of the flower, and along the edges it gradually becomes pinkish.
Belinda. The velvety flowers of this variety smell very nice and do not fade throughout the entire flowering period. This variety is considered one of the most cold-resistant.
Melissa. This shade can be called golden, yellowish, or champagne, but more often it is called lemon yellow.By the way! This variety is very similar to another tumbelina - Suzanne, but Melissa's petals are slightly lighter.
Diana. In the photo in some stores, the variety appears yellowish. But no, this is a petunia with white double flowers.
Margarita. White petals plus subtle purple streaks. It is curious that these veins are clearly visible on the outer (outer) petals, but they may not be on the central petals at all.
But, of course, these are far from all known varieties of tumbelins.
Sometimes a mixture of varieties of this plant can be seen on sale. That is, in one offer from the store you will find seedlings of red, yellow, crimson, purple and pink flowers.
