Unconventional landing methods
Florists are constantly experimenting, coming up with new options for how to plant bulbous crops in the garden, create unusual flower arrangements
Placing in a plastic container
One option is to plant tulips in plastic containers.
One method is to plant tulips in the fall in plastic boxes or baskets. Small holes are made at the bottom for drainage, the soil mixture is poured onto the bottom, the onions are laid out, trying to place them more tightly. The containers are placed in pre-prepared trenches and buried.
This method makes it easier to care for plants:
- After the plants have faded, you need to take out the container and select all the planting material. At the same time, the bulbs are practically not injured, because their location is known
- The containers create more favorable conditions for growth. For limited space, it is easier to prepare an earthen nutrient mixture, organize watering and fertilize on time
- Convenient for decorating large flower beds or flower beds, where tulips are placed in even rows, choosing a suitable color scheme
- Bulbs are not damaged by rodents that cannot penetrate the plastic barrier
This is one of the handy ways to plant tulips in November. It is not a pleasure to work with cold ground in cold weather. The container method makes the task much easier.
Climbing landing
By planting the bulbs using the "lasagna" method, you can get such a luxurious bouquet
Thanks to the layered planting in the fall, in the spring you get a huge bouquet of tulips of different shapes and colors that shine with beauty. This effect is achieved by planting the bulbs at different depths. They are placed simply in the ground or in a dug pot, a deep basin or a wide bucket.
Sequencing:
- select a small area and dig it up, bringing in the batteries
- using a landing cone, we bury larger specimens to a considerable depth
- then we plant a higher layer of medium-sized onions
- we place the smallest planting material even higher
The bulbs should not be located one above the other, therefore we mark in advance the place of their placement with small sticks. The result is a layered structure like an Italian dish.
Simplified option: plant several (5-7 pieces) of the same size bulbs at close range in one large, common hole. To what depth depends on the size of the onion: on average, it is 7-15 cm. There is another, more accurate gradation: a depth of 3 bulb diameters.
Various combinations of bulbous crops
This composition allows you to combine the colors, size and shape of the petals. Interesting contrasting options are obtained: varieties with smooth and double petals, mixtures of different colors and shades. Combinations with variegated and monochromatic buds of the same color look beautiful. The varieties selected for the flowering time allow you to admire the "bouquet of tulips" for a longer time.
A similar version of lasagna is created using different bulbous crops. By adding imperial hazel grouse, crocuses, irises, daffodils to tulips, they get an amazing flower phantasmagoria.
Planting tulips in the fall is a common procedure for growers who like to grow bulbs. They don't wonder if tulips can be planted in November. Knowing the exact dates of planting in their region, choosing the time according to weather conditions and their own experience, they are sure that in the spring they will see the bright hats of their favorite primroses.

How to prepare bulbs for planting
Preparing tulip bulbs for planting is also crucial. Before planting, the planting material must be placed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for a short time, or etched in one of the special solutions (for example, "Maxim Dachnik"). This is necessary to eliminate pathogenic bacteria located on the surface of the bulb, in other words, it is recommended to decontaminate it, which in the future will protect the planting material from many diseases.
Optimal landing site
Tulips are quite demanding plants. In order for them to bloom with bright colors, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules when choosing a place for placement:
- The site should be located on a hill - thawed and stagnant waters in the lowlands are poorly tolerated by all bulbous flowers, the bulbs begin to rot and mold.
- The place should be well lit, otherwise the flowers will reach for the light, releasing peduncles that are too long, thereby losing their stability (if it is too windy, the peduncle can easily break off), and the color of the buds will be dull.
- The area where the tulips will be located must be protected from the effects of the wind. Therefore, the bulbs are placed on the south side, fenced off from the north. Plots next to the outbuildings are ideal.
- It is better (just in case) to make drainage - stagnant water negatively affects the root system of the plant. As a drainage layer, you can pour 2-3 cm of sand, especially if you have excessively clayey soil. The same applies to groundwater - their close location threatens the death of all planted bulbs.

How to plant a flower correctly
The bulbs are planted in furrows, which must be dug up to 15 cm deep. When planting plants, it is necessary to maintain a certain distance from each other, namely 20-30 cm.
A distance of 10 cm is maintained between the furrows. If the soil is heavy, then it is not necessary to place the bulbs deeply, it is enough to bury them in the soil 10–12 cm, bottom-down. It is not necessary to press the bulbs into the soil, otherwise you risk damaging the root system.
What is needed for landing
Before planting flowers, you need to decide on the varietal material and geometry of the landscape composition.
The gardener will also need special equipment, namely:
- Shovel. In order to dig up the soil, rid it of weed roots and apply top dressing, you will need a bayonet shovel. It will also be needed in order to dig up the bulbs at the end of the flowering season. For working with flowers, a shovel with a scoop length of 30 to 45 cm is best suited.
- The rake is used to crush the clods of soil before planting the flowers, and to bring the soil surface to the proper condition for planting tulips. The tool allows you to level and fluff the soil. The rake can be replaced with a hand cultivator.
- A boot, with the help of which even furrows are marked. Usually the length of the cutting surface of such a tool is 25–35 cm. It is enough to penetrate deep enough into the soil. The sharp edge of the boot is also necessary in order to rid the flower crop from weeds during the growth process.
Important! If the soil is not sufficiently moist, then experienced gardeners put a small layer of sand on the bottom of the furrow and water it with water.
To plant bulbs in confined environments where a large number of plants are intertwined, gardeners use a special bulb planter. It is suitable for work in both "tight" and large flower beds.
Site selection and soil preparation
To plant flower bulbs, you need to take the choice of location seriously. It should be light and sunny. Tulips love loose, nutritious and light soil, which contains a lot of humus. If the soil on the proposed planting site is heavy, it can be "lightened" with peat or compost
It is important to avoid areas in the lowlands, which are characterized by close water occurrence. This threatens to wet the planting material, rotting it, and in extreme cold - freezing. Did you know? The closest biological "relatives" of tulips are asparagus and garlic
Did you know? The closest biological "relatives" of tulips are asparagus and garlic.
The soil for tulips is desirable with a neutral pH level of 7.0-7.5. A month before the planting of the culture, the land on the site must be dug up 30 cm deep. Do not fertilize the tulip area in the year the bulbs are planted. Top dressing is best applied "under the predecessor".
For 1 m² of the planting area, it is recommended to seal up a mixture of the following components:
- humus - 2 buckets;
- ash - 0.5 l;
- sawdust - ½ bucket.
Bulb processing
Before placing the bulb in the ground, it must be inspected for defects and damage. If at least one specimen is affected by a disease, then for the rest there is a high probability of infection. Sore and rotten parts must be removed with a sharp instrument. 1–2 hours before planting, the seed should be dipped into a potassium permanganate solution (0.5%).
Landing
Planting is done immediately after soaking the bulbs, which must be placed in the furrows, sprinkled with ash and sand.
Important! Do not apply fresh manure under tulips. This can cause plant diseases.
The next layer is from the soil
It is important to remember that tulips do not return to their original place earlier than after 5 years. At the first frost, the planting area must be mulched.
Peat is perfect for these purposes (layer up to 5 cm). The mulch will keep the soil at an optimal temperature and prevent the planting material from freezing. When warming occurs, peat does not need to be removed, it will help retain moisture at the roots

Agricultural technology of autumn planting of tulips
The weather factors that determine when to plant tulips are characterized by relatively low air temperatures and cooling of the soil to + 10 ° C.
In this case, they proceed from the following considerations:
- If you start planting prematurely, the bulbs can germinate before the frost arrives and will not survive the winter;
- Cold soil minimizes the risk of transmission of fungal infections, and vole mice that like tulip bulbs become less active.
How and where to store bulbs until autumn planting
Growing tulips from a bulb requires keeping it in good condition before planting. After digging, the onion is cleaned, treated with fungicides and dried. Spoiled onions are discarded.
Basic rules for the preparation and storage of planting material:
- Drying of the bulbs is carried out for 6-7 days in a dry place, but protected from direct sunlight. For example, on the veranda of a house. If there is a barn in the country, then you can dry it there;
- The first 10-15 days the storage temperature is maintained at 24-28 ° C, then -18-20 ° C, a week before planting - 12-15 ° C;
- The air humidity is maintained at 65-70%, which will prevent the bulbs from drying out unnecessarily. However, excessive dampness will lead to the onset of putrefactive processes;
- The best storage containers are wooden or cardboard boxes, baskets with air access. Sometimes the bulbs can be placed directly on the shelves. If the second layer is laid, then newsprint is placed first. To protect against rodents, nets with bulbs are hung on the walls;
Important! Plastic containers with tight-fitting lids and plastic bags are not suitable for optimal preservation of tulip bulbs
- Planting material should be checked regularly, removing damaged specimens.

How to plant tulips correctly
In addition to the correct timing, you need to know how best to plant tulips in order for them to feel comfortable. The success of bulb germination depends on the planting depth.
It is determined by its diameter (D) and the type of soil:
- in loose sandy ground - 3D;
- in clay soil - 2D.
Tulips are usually planted in parallel furrows, at least 0.2 m apart.
Procedure:
- If planting is carried out in dry soil, it is pre-moistened;
Important! If disinfection is necessary, a small amount of potassium permanganate is added to the water
- Sprinkle the bottom of the groove with sand;
- The bulbs are placed with their sharp tips up, each after about 10 cm;
Planting tulips in furrows
- Then they are lightly sprinkled with ash and a little sand is added to the groove between the bulbs;
- Furrows are completely buried with earth, leveled and watered.
Soil preparation
What kind of soil does tulips need? They grow well in normal garden soil.Clay (with stagnant moisture) and too sandy soils are most difficult to tolerate. In such conditions, cultivation of tulips is problematic, they bloom poorly. A permeable, nutritious alumina soil that is neutral to slightly acidic is ideal.
Chalk is added to acidic soil, river sand is added to clayey soil.
About a month before planting, the earth is dug up, and later fertilizers are applied:
- ash;
- peat or leaf compost;
- superphosphate.
Important! Fresh manure is not allowed to be used as fertilizer
Seat selection
Tulips love sunny places, with a flat surface and not blown by the winds. They can be planted in separate beds or combined with other plants.
How to plant tulips outdoors in autumn
Lawns and flower beds are picturesquely decorated with beautiful flowers in spring. But when choosing a planting site, it must be borne in mind that tulips grow best in lighted areas, protected from drafts.
Soil selection and planting flowers
For the full development of plants, a layer of fertile soil of at least 35-40 cm is required. Therefore, the land is specially fertilized during the autumn preparation of the site. Experienced flower growers recommend combining soil digging and top dressing. It is possible to improve the quality of the soil both with organic fertilizers (humus, wood ash) and inorganic ones.
Sandy soils are characterized by rapid drying out and poor nutritional composition. Frequent watering and regular fertilization are optimal conditions for good tulip growth. Per square meter of area, take:
- 150-200 g of wood ash,
- two buckets of compost,
- 25 g of ammonium nitrate,
- 30 g of potassium sulfate,
- 40-50 g superphosphate.
It is possible to increase the nutritional value and water permeability of heavy clay soils by adding river sand, manure, peat (about two buckets per square meter of land area). Manure can only be used rotted, otherwise fresh organic matter can burn the root system and lead to the development of fungal diseases.
Lands with an acidity index of pH = 6.5-7.8 are suitable for growing tulips. When adding peat, it is necessary to take into account its increased acidity (pH = 2.5-3.0) and add chalk / lime flour / wood ash to the soil. When liming, the powder is evenly scattered over the surface of the soil before digging.
Planting stages
- The site is thoroughly cleared of weeds and dug up. Grooves are outlined and watered with a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate for the prevention of fungal diseases.
- Holes 8-12 cm deep are dug at a distance of about 10-15 cm in a row. Small bulbs are planted thicker. The row spacing is made 20-30 cm wide. On light soils, the bulbs are buried more, and less on heavy soils.
- In areas where water can stagnate, a drainage layer (river sand, expanded clay, pebbles) with a thickness of 1-2 cm is made in the holes. A layer of nutrient mixture is poured on top. The bulbs are powdered with wood ash, laid out in the ground and slightly pressed so that air pockets do not form under them, then watered.
- If the seed is not homogeneous, then you can put a large onion and several small ones (around a large onion) in the center of the hole.
- All pits are sprinkled with soil, which is carefully leveled to form a flat surface. Otherwise, water will accumulate in the grooves and the seed may rot. Do I need to water them? If dry weather is established in the fall, then it is advisable to moisten the area after 5-7 days. If you skip watering, then the root system will not form in the bulbs.
Interesting flower beds can be created when planting tulips according to varietal characteristics. On average, up to 50 bulbs are planted per square meter of land
In this case, it is important to take into account the periods of blooming buds.
It all starts with the soil
How to plant correctly tulips not for distillation, and for a lush spring bloom? Many people believe that they grow in any soil, and careful preparation for planting is not necessary.But it is more correct, when tulips are planted in autumn, to choose a site that is well-lit, even, drained, not flooded at any time of the year, with groundwater levels not higher than 70 cm. The reaction of the soil medium should be neutral or slightly alkaline (pH 7-7.5).
And it's not bad at all if the planted material is placed on a sandy underlying horizon and a fertile layer of at least 40 cm. On poor soils, tulips quickly become smaller and degenerate. Killing weeds and clearing rocks won't hurt either.
Answering the question of how to plant tulips correctly, experts recommend starting the preparation of the soil for planting in advance, filling it with a large amount of organic fertilizers or peat compost. By the time of planting, they must completely overheat. Before planting tulips in the fall, that is, during pre-planting soil cultivation, the soil is supplemented with complete mineral fertilizer. In dry weather, the soil is moistened.
The decision to plant tulips to what depth depends on the type of soil. On heavy ones, they are planted closer to the surface, on light, easily freezing ones - deeper. General recommendations are reduced to a depth of 12-15 cm. The size of the bulb is also important. Dutch experts recommend digging holes up to 20 cm from the base of the bulb, adding its height to this value. Thus, with a three-centimeter bulb height, a hole 23 cm deep will be required.
When tulips are planted, roots, large stones, and other debris that will interfere with the growth of tulips are removed from the hole. But gravel, holly leaves, branches of thorny bushes, neatly arranged at the bottom of the hole and around the tulip, will protect the newly planted flower from mice and other rodents that damage the bulbs. A thin metal wire or mesh at the bottom of the planting will help block access to the bulbs in the hole.
Features of planting on different soils
On heavy soils (loam), it is recommended to pour fine river sand (3 parts to 1 part of the earth) on the bottom of the hole. If tulips have been grown in this place for 5-6 years, then the place needs to be changed or a little fertilizer added to the ground. The bulb is carefully placed on the bottom of the hole in an upright position, being careful not to press it strongly into the ground.
Flowers should be planted at a distance of 10-20 cm from each other. With such a landing from 1 sq. m of area, the gardener who planted the bulbs will receive about 50-60 bright beautiful flowers in the spring. Small bulbs can be planted 3 to 7 cm apart.
After planting, you should clean up all the scales from tulips, other rejected material, so as not to attract possible lovers of bulbs from among small rodents to this place.
Preparation
Tulips can grow in flower beds for 3-4 years without transplanting. However, they should be changed annually or every two years if the bulbs are grown to sell flowers or planting material. In addition, replanting annually helps to avoid fungal diseases, since the bulbs are harvested every year, and the diseased are then discarded.
Most tulip growers plant the bulbs in flower beds 1-1.2 meters wide for convenience. If the water level in the area is high, tulips are best planted in raised beds, that is, 20-25 cm above the soil level.
The soil
The soil must be well prepared before planting the bulbs. It needs not only to be plowed, but also to remove the roots of weeds and fertilize. They dig and loosen the soil deeply. The porous soil improves the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the plant roots.
Experienced growers advise to mix the soil with compost, peat moss; level the surface. For planting tulip bulbs, small holes are dug about 10 centimeters deep. Place the bulb inside with the wide base down, and the pointed end up.
Bulbs need moisture to grow normally, but excess water will provoke rot and they will never germinate.Winter tulip care includes the use of a light mulch cover and very discreet watering. The mulch will keep the soil warm and moist enough. Mulching with a 25 cm layer of sawdust, peat or compost is absolutely necessary in this case. The root of the bulb should take three weeks to take root.
Bulbs
Bulbs bought in the fall already have a flower embryo hidden inside. He is just waiting to start growing in the spring. If the planting material is purchased in late August or early September, then you will have to wait to plant them in October - November. Tulips grow so quickly that if planted immediately after purchase, they will immediately release their leaves. Therefore, it is required to store the bulbs in paper bags, and not in plastic containers, in a cool place: basement, cellar or the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.
Before planting tulip tubers, you need to carefully select those that will not give healthy offspring in the future. Healthy, intact tubers without visible damage are laid on a separate side for planting. It is advisable to treat them with potassium permanganate or use a specialized preparation for fungi, which is sold in the store.
Choose healthy planting material of impressive size, without cracks, signs of rot or black fungal mold on the outside. The bulbs must be firm. Damaged, sick or soft ones are removed. Be sure to sort the material by size, grade and color.
Before planting, tulips are soaked for 30-60 minutes in 0.5% potassium permanganate solution. After the performed procedure, the bulbs are immediately planted in the soil prepared in advance. The planting material will quickly absorb water, its lower part will swell and a good root system will soon appear.

A useful and visual video from the Gazeta Khozyaistvo channel about how and when to plant tulips in autumn.
How to cover the landings
When planting tulips in autumn, it is recommended to cover them with a layer of peat / rotted compost (up to 4 cm thick) in regions with severe frosts. Mulch is not harvested in spring. This will keep the top layer of the soil loose and allow water to flow well to the bulbs. Mulch also inhibits the growth of weeds.
In regions with severe frosts, straw is used as a shelter. You should not be in a hurry to lay the straw. Landings are covered when a constant negative temperature is established, and the ground freezes below 5-7 cm
In the spring, it is important to remove the straw layer on time, otherwise the sprouts will be overheated in warm, humid weather
Tulips are one of the first spring flowers that delight summer residents with elegant buds. The variety of varieties allows you to create original flowering plantings that will decorate your summer cottage for a long time. Unpretentious flowers require a little attention, and in this article we looked at when to plant tulips in autumn and how to do it correctly. Compliance with the rules for storing and planting planting material will be the key to a beautiful and early flowering of flowers.
How to plant
After the tulips have finished blooming, dig up the bulbs and peel them off. Set aside for planting in a cool, dark place whole, not damaged by pests. Previously, it is recommended to disinfect them by keeping them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 5 minutes, then drying them with a paper towel.
Seat selection
Tulips, like other flowers, need to be planted not in those places where they will please the eye, but where favorable conditions for their growth will be observed. A sunny location is best, where the snow is expected to melt first. There should be no melt water nearby, as the bulbs will rot and die when flooded.
Soil preparation
Prepare the soil within the recommended time frame for planting tulips. Planting material will germinate well only in light and moisture-permeable soil. Previously, it is required to add coarse sand or neutral peat, phosphorus-potassium fertilizer to it. Instead, you can use ready-made mineral complexes for feeding bulbous plants. Useful substances are absorbed into the bulb, which is why it will germinate faster and give large, beautiful buds.
Preparing the bulbs
To plant tulips before winter, check the bulbs again for disease and pest damage. It is required to get rid of defective planting material. No other preparations are required before work.
Rodents like to eat bulbs. To prevent this, when storing tulips indoors, place mousetraps near them.
Landing
The key to getting beautiful bright tulips is their correct planting. To get beautiful flowers, you should plant them correctly - at a distance of 1-2 diameters from each other by the size of the bulbs
Another important condition is the planting depth, the greater it is, the longer the plant will germinate. It is better to bury the planting material at 1-1.5 heights of its size
Care
Even if tulips are planted according to the table of favorable days, they may still not germinate or give scanty small buds, if proper care was not followed during cultivation. It boils down to this:
- Do not allow excess liquid to enter, protect the soil from moistening with melt water, otherwise, the bulbs are easily affected by fungal diseases.
- In winter, mice are in a state of starvation, so they can attack flower bulbs. To prevent their attacks, cover the flowerbed with spruce or pine spruce branches 15-20 cm thick. Thorny branches will prevent rodents from penetrating under the soil.
In central Russia, rooted tulips tolerate frost well. In regions with severe and long winters, for example, in Siberia or the Urals, it is recommended to additionally insulate the soil by covering it or spruce branches with hay. You should also regularly pile snow on the flower bed and make sure that bare ground is not visible.
