You can learn more about growing this beautiful flower in the following video.
Cultivation basics
Growing a catharanthus gives equally good results in a pot, and in a flower bed, and in a container. The seeds of the plant are not too capricious. They are distinguished by friendly shoots and allow you to form excellent seedlings. Many varieties are undemanding to watering and can be grown in moderately moist soil.
Even in the warmest regions of Russia, it is impossible to collect seeds: they cannot mature in the open field. The exception is greenhouse culture. Sowing seeds for seedlings should be in early spring. Experts advise soaking the seed for about 2/3 hours before planting in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Next, the seeds must dry. To do this, they are placed on a paper napkin for 2-3 hours.
The soil is made up of the same amount:
- peat;
- humus;
- sheet soil;
- turf.
All components are thoroughly mixed and placed in containers. The earth needs to be properly loosened. The remainder of the potassium permanganate solution must be used for soil treatment. It is necessary to sow seeds in furrows up to 15 cm deep. When planting is over, the container is moved into the dark, germination there lasts 7-10 days.
You can grow a catharanthus in a flower pot or on a rabat. Ampel varieties develop relatively slowly. In case of long cloudy weather, as well as in winter, additional insolation is urgently needed. For cultivation, only slightly acidic soil is used. It is thoroughly cleared of weeds.
Peculiarities
Catharanthus is one of the evergreens of exotic origin. In nature, it develops in a multiyear regime. But in our country, you can grow it only as an annual. The graceful flower is believed to have originated from Madagascar. Botanists attribute it to the Kutrovy family and distinguish 8 species, however, many varieties have been bred on this basis.
Katarantus is better known under a different name: periwinkle. On its basis, drugs are made that successfully suppress malignant neoplasms. In landscape design, this plant is used in the same way as other crops intended for open ground. Catharanthus can overwinter even in the almost complete absence of snow. Traditionally, there are a lot of legends around them, and some of these legends are very ominous. So, it was assumed that with the help of catharanthus you can:
- expose the evil magicians;
- protect yourself from evil spirits;
- prevent a lightning strike to the house;
- guess.
The unusual legends surrounding the periwinkle are associated with its impressive properties. The plant can use water as efficiently as possible. Very little moisture evaporates through the miniature stomata of the foliage, so the catharanthus is unusually tenacious. Its flowers appear even in the most difficult conditions, and the plant itself is able to survive freezing rain.
