How to reanimate at home: step by step instructions
Is it possible if all the roots and leaves have fallen off?
Attention! If the roots are rotten, then the flower may die.
In this case, urgent resuscitation actions are needed. In this case, the flower is planted in a small greenhouse, which is purchased in a specialized store or made by yourself from a plastic box. At the bottom of the greenhouse, expanded clay and moss are poured.
After which the plant is carefully placed there.
Good lighting is very important in this case, so it is worth buying a phytolamp in advance.
Next, the following procedures are carried out:
- Periodically, you need to soak the flower in a nutrient solution and in water.
- Wipe the base where the leaves should appear with a growth-promoting agent.
- Bath the orchid in water with the addition of special preparations.
- Vitamins of group B. They contribute to the restoration of a decayed root system. The flower needs to be soaked once a month in such a solution and wiped once a week.
- Growth regulators. They contain phytohormones that restore the structure of the roots. The plant should be soaked in them monthly (you can find out about effective means for building roots in an orchid here).
- Fertilizers based on potassium and phosphorus. Feeding with them is carried out every 2 months.
- Glucose. If the plant is healthy, then glucose is produced by itself as a result of photosynthesis. A sick flower needs feeding with the content of this substance, since glucose promotes the formation of new cells.
- Fertilizer with iron chelate stimulates the growth of roots and leaves.
Attention! It can take from several months to one year to restore a damaged orchid.

No growth point
In this case, all rotten roots are removed. This is done using pre-disinfected scissors. Then the plant is set in the water so that its upper part rises above the water. It is necessary to transfer the container with the orchid to a well-lit place. So the orchid will begin to recover, and soon a new root system should appear.
We offer you to watch a video about the resuscitation of an orchid without a growth point:
There is not a single sheet
If the leaves of the orchid began to fall off, but the root remained unchanged, then the following restoration tips will help:
- Do not wait for all the leaves of the orchid to fall off, you need to remove the flower from the pot and inspect the condition of the root system.
- It is necessary to monitor the system of natural change of leaves so as not to confuse a natural process with a pathological condition.
- The rules for watering in indoor conditions should be clearly regulated.
- If the plant has just been purchased, you should immediately check the roots for rot or diseases (what leaf diseases are found in orchids?).
- If necessary, you need to use a room greenhouse.
- At times, it is worth replanting the flower to a new substrate.
- Stick to the concept when using reinforcing products.

Step by step instructions: how to reanimate a flower at home?
Let's figure out how to grow roots at home, help them gain vitality and restore the plant.
Preparing inventory
To reanimate an orchid, you need to prepare:
- sharp knife or scissors;
- Activated carbon;
- potassium permanganate solution.
The knife or scissors must be disinfected beforehand to prevent infestation of the orchid.
Removing the flower from the pot and pruning the root system
- After preparing all the tools, it is necessary to remove the plant from the pot, take the rest of the soil and visually assess the extent of the problem.
- Rinse the roots with clean water at room temperature.
- Remove all rotten tissue with scissors.
- Treat the cut sites with activated carbon powder.
- If mold was noticed during the inspection, then you need to carefully treat the plant with an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate.
We offer for viewing a visual video about caring for an orchid and pruning rotten roots:
Foliar top dressing
For this top dressing, special liquid preparations are used that saturate the plant with useful substances through the absorption capacity of the leaves. Foliar feeding allows the entire plant system to function normally when the roots are unable to supply nutrients. It is recommended to slightly moisten the soil before foliar application. To carry out the manipulation early in the morning or late in the evening, since the scorching sun rays during the day, together with feeding, can lead to a chemical burn.
Important! When applying top dressing, do not get on the buds and flowers.
If there is a stem and leaves
Let's see how to root the plant in this case. There is no need to grow roots for an orchid, and only then transplant into prepared soil.
Consider how resuscitation takes place in water:
- In an aqueous solution of a growth stimulant, lower a plant with a growth point, previously separated from rotten roots.
- Place an activated carbon tablet in a bowl of boiled water.
- Move the orchid to a basin where the water temperature is 25 degrees.
- During the growth of roots in the water in the room there should be high humidity and excellent air circulation.
- From time to time, you need to wipe the leaves with a solution of succinic acid or a sugar solution.
- As soon as it is found that a small amount of water has evaporated, then in order to successfully grow roots, you need to add liquid to the required level, while the plant is placed with its neck up. Only the temperature difference should not exceed 3 degrees.
If there is only a stem
Consider whether it is possible to save the plant in this case, how to stimulate root growth. It is very difficult to save a flower, but with proper care there are chances. To reanimate the plant, it is necessary to carry out the same treatment as in the previous version. You only need to plant the plant in the moss. Watering is rare (for one humidification, apply about 20 ml of liquid. Moss perfectly retains moisture and promotes its structured distribution. As soon as the first roots grow, the orchid should be transplanted into the ground.
Algae presence
Algae on the roots are formed due to a lack of minerals or natural light. They worsen soil aeration, change its chemical composition and release toxic components.
When green algae forms on the roots of a flower, you must immediately take measures to save it.
We offer you to watch a visual video about algae in the roots of an orchid: Procedure:
- Rinse plant roots several times in 0.1% potassium permanganate solution.
- For orchids, in which the root system requires regular lighting, there is one trick: you need to wrap a transparent flowerpot with foil. Then the light rays will not affect the roots and algae, as a result of which the latter will die.
- In case of severe damage, the roots should be rinsed in a bleach solution.
In greenhouse conditions
If there is a window greenhouse in which you can maintain the optimal temperature and humidity, then the chances of reviving the orchid will increase.
Procedure:
- At the bottom of the greenhouse, expanded clay will be laid, and on top of it - well steamed sphagnum moss.
- Place a leaf outlet in such a soil.When the orchid manages to grow roots up to 4-5 cm, then in the greenhouse from that time it will be necessary to maintain the following conditions: humidity within 75-95%; the temperature should not exceed + 23 ... + 27 ° С; Maintain bright lighting for 12-14 hours a day.
The success rate after the performed procedure is 80%. But this can be achieved subject to careful care, which consists in regular airing at night, watering as the substrate dries, and maintaining the microclimate.
Causes of wilting orchids
The reasons for the wilting of an orchid at home are very different. Usually, a grower notices that something is wrong with the plant when he discovers sluggish leaves. And keep in mind that if only the lower leaves wither, and the upper ones are healthy and have a dark green tint, then everything is in order. If the vegetative mass withers both above and below, this is cause for concern. If you do not start correcting the situation, the leaves will quickly turn yellow, fall off, and the plant itself will die. In other words, if you notice wilting leaves, look for the cause right away.
The main reasons for wilting include the following:
Overheat. It is usually observed if the flower is kept in a room with a high temperature. Overheating can also be the result of direct sunlight on the plant, which leads to a rapid loss of moisture. As a result, the leaves wither and dry out over time. There is a basic method for solving this situation. First, you need to remove the plant in a dark place and keep it there for two to three hours. After "resting" in the shade, you can buy the orchid and spray the leaves. Do not expect that the ochidea will immediately come to life, since this requires at least two or three days, or even more, depending on the degree of wilting. Do not forget to take care of suitable growing conditions for the plant in order to exclude a repetition of the situation in the future.
Over or under watering. In the first case, the problem is the high moisture content of the substrate in the pot, which leads to rotting of the root system. Lack of moisture leads, on the contrary, to the fact that the roots dry out. To correct the situation, you will need to resuscitate the orchid (if possible), and then follow the care recommendations.
The amount of top dressing used. You need to keep track of how much top dressing is used.
Particular attention is paid to the proportions of substances (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and other trace elements) necessary for the orchid, which are contained in the fertilizer. In some cases, the flower dies from an excessive amount of bait, because the roots are poisoned
The disease manifests itself in wilting and yellowing of leaves, a change in the color of the roots and their rotting. Below is information that will tell you what to do if the root system is festering. There is almost always a chance to “revive” a seemingly hopeless plant.
Parasites and harmful insects in the soil. Most often, parasitic beetles are found, which are called click beetles. They feed on the roots of the plant. Treatment involves rinsing the roots with warm running water, treating pests with drugs and transplanting the plant into a pot with a new substrate. In the photo you can see what the larvae of click beetles look like.
Why does the orchid dry up?
There are many reasons for the drying up of an exotic culture. Each of them is worth considering in more detail.
May wilt due to improper watering
Plants of the orchid family endure an arid tropical climate in the wild. But excessive moisture has an extremely negative effect on the root system. In this case, processes occur that contribute to root decay:
- stagnation of moisture is formed;
- the root system does not receive the amount of oxygen sufficient for life;
- Partial root decay is initially formed, later - complete.
Novice growers try to water and moisturize the flower in the wrong ways, using, for example, a watering can.
Peculiarity! Watering orchids is not a systematic process, since the soil dries up over a different period of time. It directly depends on the impact of external factors. Before you start watering, you should check the moisture content of the root system and soil.
Begins to wilt due to fertilizer errors
The roots of the flower are airy, they receive the sun for the process of photosynthesis. The purpose of the soil is to fix the orchid in the flowerpot. Special requirements are imposed on the composition of the soil, their failure to fulfill them leads to diseases, and in some cases even to the death of the plant.
A substrate purchased from a specialist store initially meets these requirements. The roots receive the necessary and sufficient amount of nutrients and oxygen.
However, over time, a number of processes occur in the soil that change its composition:
- mold appears;
- salts are deposited;
- different types of fungus start up.
This negatively affects the properties of the substrate: it becomes dense, the substances necessary for the root system cease to flow. In addition, an excess of potassium and phosphorus disrupts the absorption of many trace elements, which leads to a change in the color of foliage, chlorosis of the leaves and their dropping.
Attention! Fertilize the plant in doses. Young specimens and children should reduce the concentration indicated on the package by three times, for adult plants - by half.
Will dry completely due to relocation
A sudden change in the location of a flower is quite a stress for him. The conditions for keeping exotics in a greenhouse or store differ significantly from the microclimate in a residential area.
The main factors affecting adaptation:
- lack of moisture;
- lack of lighting;
- inappropriate temperature regime.
You can understand that an orchid does not like a new place by its appearance. First of all, the flower drops the buds, and then the flowers. Most often this can be observed in the autumn-winter period.
There is nothing wrong in such a situation. After all, adaptation is a natural process for almost all plants. Orchids in this case were no exception. If the flower is properly cared for, it will quickly recover and will delight with abundant flowering.
Signs of an unhealthy condition
Phalaenopsis orchid notifies its owners about its poor health with changes in appearance.
Visually, you can notice this by yellowing or drooping foliage, in addition, the leaves can rot, become covered with spots of various shapes and sizes, and curl.
It is useless to wait for peduncles on such a plant, it should be immediately started to reanimate. So what and how should you do?
The first step in this process should be a thorough examination of the entire plant, including the root system. For this, the plant is removed from the substrate, washed thoroughly together with the rhizome under warm water. After light drying, proceed to the inspection.
The most common are:
root diseases, often occur with improper watering of the plant. Excessive moisture and high room temperatures cause decay. In this case, the roots immediately darken, then they simply begin to gradually die off. If watering is scarce, the roots will dry out, this is manifested by a light color of the rhizome. The disease is eliminated by normalizing watering and drying or completely replacing the substrate, but before that the stem is freed from all affected parts of the root system. When the rhizome is damaged, the leaves react with darkening, brown spots may appear on them;
Sick root.
-
the leaves of the phalaenopsis orchid can suffer for several reasons, they are provoked:
- pests that are often brought along with the flower from the store. Once in a favorable environment, they begin to actively reproduce.To do this, they need food, mainly plant sap, they take it from the trunk. Very often the leaves fade, sag, and then turn yellow. Sometimes the places of suction can be affected by a fungus, which can simply destroy the plant;
- fungal diseases can occur on the phalaenopsis orchid if disinfection rules are not followed. Any processes involving pruning or cutting should be carried out with sterile instruments, and all sections are treated with charcoal or cinnamon powder. On the leaves, the fungus appears as brown or brown spots, mostly round in shape, which quickly spread further. Eliminate the disease by cutting off infected areas with subsequent disposal;
- improperly selected lighting also has a detrimental effect on orchid foliage. Direct sunlight burns delicate leaves, leaving traces on them in the form of yellow-gray or brown-black spots that cannot be treated. In insufficient light, wrinkling of the leaves is observed, they grow small and have a dull color.
Important! Sometimes growers mistake the simple aging of the lower leaves for diseases, but this is not so. If the leaf just turned yellow and separated from the stem, do not panic
Instead, he will soon grow up young.
the whole plant, together with leaves and peduncles, can poorly tolerate a large amount of top dressing. Proper care consists in moderate feeding of the stem, but many novice growers are of the opinion that the more, the better. With top dressing, this works a little differently; during the flowering period, the phalaenopsis orchid does not need it at all. In other periods, it is worth strictly adhering to the instructions on the product, otherwise you can cause a stupor in development. The root system will darken, the leaves will also acquire the same color, fade, become lethargic. Peduncles may dry out. All this is a sign of a burn, which was provoked by fertilizers applied to the stem in large quantities.
Leaf yellowing from excess fertilizer.
If at least one of these signs is observed in the phalaenopsis orchid, you should immediately start rehabilitating it. Otherwise, you can not only lose the peduncles, but the flower itself.
What to do to reanimate?
Orchid is a capricious plant. But even if it dries up and sheds a few leaves, this does not mean that the exotic cannot be reanimated. Timely measures taken will correct the situation and help save the withering flower.
How to save if the roots dry?
The root system of orchids is capable of not only rotting, but also drying out. The reasons for its drying can be:
- excessive watering;
- hard water;
- bacterial infections;
- insufficient moisture;
- excess fertilizer (wrong concentration);
- fungal infections;
- reasons due to the age of the flower.
You can restore a plant with dry roots in a simple and effective way. Even if there are a lot of dry roots, you need to do the following:
- With a sharp knife, cut off the dried roots to the beginning of living tissue.
- Dry the cut sites, sprinkle with disinfecting powder. This can be wood ash (crushed), activated carbon, or ground cinnamon.
- Plant the flower in prepared fresh soil and fix it with the help of supports (it is quite difficult for weakened roots to strengthen on their own).
- Watering should be done carefully so as not to injure weakened roots. To do this, use a fine sprayer.
Attention! Before cutting off the dried roots, you need to treat the knife with any disinfectant, for example, chlorhexidine or alcohol solution.
How to revive all dried leaves?
In most cases, the ground part of the flower dries out from strong overheating, and the reason for this may be the sun's rays. If the root system is viable and the leaves have wilted, the orchid can be revitalized in the following way:
- Remove the plant from the flowerpot, examine its ground part.
- Free from dried leaves and dry ground roots to living tissue. After that, sprinkle the root system with any antiseptic.
- If the roots are not dry, you should only clean them from the old soil by gently rinsing them under a stream of warm water.
- Transplant into fresh substrate.
Important! It is not recommended to water the orchid in the traditional way after transplanting. For these purposes it is necessary to use a sprayer
For spraying, you can use effective growth stimulants once every 1.5-2 days: Epin, Kendal, etc.
How to restore the stem?
The reasons for the drying of the stem are changes in the root system. Since the orchid stores moisture in the leaves or pseudobulbs, it is quite difficult to understand that the rhizome has dried up.
It often happens that the stem and leaves have a normal turgor, and the roots are already dry or rotted. In order to revive a flower, you need to perform a number of actions:
- Remove the orchid from the pot.
- Cut off the decayed areas of the rhizome with a sharp disinfected knife.
- Transplant into fresh substrate and normalize care.
In the case when the root system is viable, and only the stem disappears, it must also be cut off to a living place. If there is no such place, you can root the shoots (babies) in a mini-greenhouse.
When there is a living section of the stem, it should be wrapped in moss or an improvised means (cotton swab). By regularly spraying the wrapper, you can quickly build up roots on the scion. After that, transplant the young flower into the soil intended for orchids.
Important! Before reanimating a plant, you need to determine the cause of its drying, and only then proceed to save it.
Can an orchid be saved? Resuscitation procedures and proper transplant
So all the same, what to do if an orchid is flooded? These flowers are strong enough. Therefore, if measures are taken in time, then the plant can be saved. In any case, first it is necessary to assess the degree of the bay and its consequences. For this:
- The orchid is removed from the pot;
- The roots are carefully cleaned of the substrate.
Since the plant has already been flooded, it is not necessary to water or soak it in order to remove excess substrate. Be careful with the roots, they are fragile in orchids and can be easily damaged, which further aggravate the situation.
Overfilling can cause orchid roots to rot.
After cleaning, inspect the roots. All dead, rotten, brown and hollow areas must be removed. Then wash the plant and inspect it again. If there are few roots left or there is a suspicion of rot, then treat it with a fungicide. Be sure to sprinkle all slices:
- Crushed coal;
- Or ground cinnamon (regular cinnamon from the spice department).
Next, the plant needs to be dried. This is especially true for cuts on the roots or other organs of the plant. Dry preferably in a shaded place. In the summer, you can take the orchid out into the garden, under a tree, or leave it on the windowsill by the open window. Do not dry the plant in the sun or with household appliances.
Then the plant is transplanted into a new substrate if it still has roots, or it is sent for intensive care in a mini-greenhouse if the roots have completely rotted.
How to reanimate an orchid after heavy watering? In the event that the leaves turn yellow due to overflow, they are removed, the plant is removed from the pot and transplanted as described above.
Attention! Yellowing and dropping of the lower leaves is not always the reason for the plant flooding. This also happens for natural reasons, as the plant develops and some parts of it age and die off.
But if the loss of foliage has become massive, then this is a reason to think. There are also deciduous orchid species, for which leaf dropping is a seasonal phenomenon.
When watering and spraying, always check the growth point and leaf axils for moisture accumulation. Excess combined with cool temperatures or occasional drafts can cause rotting.
And if for sympodial orchids this is not so scary, then for monopodial orchids, the loss of a single growth point means a halt in plant growth and death after aging and falling of the remaining leaves.
However, if the plant is large, strong and healthy, then the nutrients in its leaves may be enough to grow a new growth - lateral babies in the amount of 1-4 pieces.
Sometimes, especially sophisticated growers, in order to propagate a flower, do just that - they pull out a young leaf with a growing point, which provokes the plant to develop lateral shoots. But since this is a rather barbaric way to reproduce, it is not recommended.
So, in case of loss of a growth point, it is necessary:
- Remove all dead and rotten areas;
- Clear;
- And sprinkle the top with cinnamon.
For prevention, carefully remove the plant from the pot and inspect the roots. If the roots also rotted, then the above procedures are carried out, and the plant is transplanted.
The death of the growth point does not always mean the imminent death of the monopodial orchid. This only means that the plant will stop developing, and only when the leaves grow old and die off, then only then will it die. But usually before that, the orchid has time to reproduce itself through the baby.
During budding and flowering
How to save a flooded orchid during the budding period? Regardless of the period in which the plant is located, in case of flooding it without fail:
- Remove from the pot;
-
And examine the roots for rot.
Further, it is necessary to act according to the above scenario. The temporary loss of flowers or decorativeness during this period is nothing compared to the loss of the entire specimen, especially if it is valuable or rare.
How to get rid of mold?
In case of mold, the plant also needs to:
- Remove from the pot;
- Inspect;
- Remove mold;
- And transplant into a fresh substrate.
If for some reason it is impossible to extract the plant, and there is not too much mold, then you can spill the substrate or soak it in a fungicide.
How to remove bugs?
Firstly, bugs are different. Most often, puffs appear in a humid environment:
- Tiny insects;
- White;
-
Who can jump.
This is not the most terrible and practically harmless living creature. Dry the substrate and the puffs will disappear by themselves. Flower growers prone to paranoia can pickle them with an insecticide. If you have more aggressive parasites, use an actara.
