Reproduction methods
Newcomers who are carried away by home floriculture are interested in how to propagate cyclamen correctly so that it does not lose its decorative effect. Several methods are practiced: baby, sowing, leafing and dividing the tuber.
Children
This method is popular among flower growers, as it gives the greatest guarantee of survival. The procedure is carried out in the second half of summer, when several children have formed on the mother bush. Having chosen the healthiest minituber with a bud, the following manipulations are performed:
the onion is carefully cut off from the main tuber;
immersed in a substrate usual for cyclamen, poured into a peat or plastic cup;
cover with a glass jar on top, building a semblance of a mini-greenhouse;
periodically, the shelter is removed and the soil is checked for moisture;
after 2 weeks, when the first leaves sprout, the jar is finally removed and the baby is looked after, as usual.
Baby's Choice
After a while, the seedling is transferred to a flower pot. On the 30th day after the separation of the baby from the mother liquor, feeding is carried out using a weak solution of mineral fertilizer.
Seeds
- Before planting the seeds, they must be kept in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 12 hours.
- In the previously prepared soil, you need to make a groove of 10 mm, which is then watered abundantly.
- The distance at which the seeds are placed should be 2-3 centimeters. Then they are covered with earth.
- After the seeds have been planted, they are covered with plastic or glass.
- When the first shoots appear, you need to remove the film or glass.
- Now the sprouts are moved to a well-lit place and positioned so that direct sunlight does not fall on the flower.
- When several leaves are formed on the seedlings, they are planted in pots of 2-3 pieces.
- During transplanting, the tubers must be completely covered with soil.
- After 5-6 months, the cyclamen is planted in a larger pot.
Tubers
- First, the bulb is removed from the soil and dried.
- Then it is cut with a knife, while leaving at least one kidney and a couple of roots in each of the parts.
- Next, we leave it in a dark place in order for the cut to dry.
- The cut must be sprinkled with charcoal or crushed activated carbon. This will help fight disease and germs.
- Be sure to need drainage in the pot; expanded clay is suitable as drainage.
- After planting the tuber, the pot should be removed from direct rays.
Sheet method
Not everyone knows how cyclamen reproduces from leaves correctly. If you do not take into account the peculiarities of the procedure, in the end you can only get a rotten plate. A leaf taken from a bush rarely takes root in water. It is not always possible to do this in the substrate.
Only European types of cyclamen can be propagated in this way - they have finger roots on the leaves. Persian flowers do not have this feature.
Leaf growing method
In order for the process to end successfully, the following rules are followed:
- leaves with roots are not cut off, but broken off;
- at the same time, a small fragment of the nodule should also move away from the plate;
- then you need to plant the cutting in the substrate, deepening it, and cover it with a greenhouse.
All other actions are the same as when breeding cyclamen with the help of children. The leaf method is a quick rooting option. As early as the 3rd week, the stalk can sprout. It remains to provide him with proper care.
Cyclamen is a very beautiful ornamental plant that can delight with flowering at any time of the year. Having learned how to propagate and transplant it correctly, you can create a real paradise on your windowsill.Knowing how to grow cyclamen from seeds at home (or in another way), you can give loved ones a little blooming splendor
Reproduction of cyclamen by seeds
Reproduction of cyclamen by seeds is often used at home. For the result to be successful, the seeds must be selected correctly. Should be considered:
- cyclamen variety;
- only whole seeds will do without damage;
- if purchased seeds are used, then check the expiration date (usually it does not exceed two years).
If you already have cyclamen at home, take its seeds. Since this flower is self-pollinated, the seed can be taken without difficulty. A "box" should appear on the cyclamen, from which you can get the seeds. When the material for planting is selected, follow these steps:
- Take a container: it may be small, but always wide so that the seeds are not cramped.
- Fill in the prepared soil: above we wrote that a special one, which is sold in a store, is suitable, or you can do it yourself.
- Make grooves in the soil. Don't make it too wide, 1 centimeter is enough.
- Pour a little water on the substrate, which should be settled or purified and, of course, warm.
- Place the seeds in the groove so that the distance between them is at least 3 centimeters. After that, sprinkle the seeds with earth, but do not tamp.
After planting, it is necessary to provide the seeds with moist soil and a place where there will be diffused light. The temperature should not be more than 18 degrees, so take care of this. Sunrises will appear in 30-50 days. When you see the first sprouts, you can feed them with fertilizers.
This method of reproduction of cyclamen is considered long-term, but at the same time and simple, since it does not require special skills.
We recommend that you watch the video in which the sowing process is described and shown in more detail.
How to care for cyclamen crops?
It is possible to grow cyclamen from planting material if the prepared containers are covered with polyethylene and placed in a warm room. The temperature should not rise higher than twenty degrees, since with such heat, these seeds enter a dormant period.
We must not forget to air the crops every day. A makeshift greenhouse must be opened for at least ten minutes.
If all the conditions were met, then in a month the first shoots will sprout from the seeds. But not all varieties of cyclamen have such germination. For example, Kiss and Apple may take six months to sprout.
The first shoots will mean that it is time to transfer the flowers to a cooler place. The seedlings sprouting from the seeds are purple-pink bores. A tuber will grow from each shoot, in turn, a shoot with the first leaf is formed from it.
It so happens that the first sheet is covered with a skin that does not want to be removed. This indicates that the flower lacks moisture. So that the cyclamen growth process does not stop, you need to carefully remove the leathery formation with tweezers. To do this, the plant must be prepared by moistening the formation from a spray bottle and letting it soften for at least thirty minutes. But do not forget about watering, by increasing it, the plant will be able to independently get rid of the skin covering it.
The growth of young cyclamen seedlings after the first shoots will occur unnoticed by others. This is due to the fact that the plant grows a root system, and the growth of the flower above the ground is suspended.
You can transplant a flower into a permanent pot when the seedling has bushes with two, or even stirrups, leaves. It will be under the most favorable circumstances in three months.
Homemade cyclamen - features of growing
The cyclamen root is a flattened round corm up to 15 cm in diameter with a single growth point. Damage it - destroy the onion.The leaves of the cyclamen are basal, leathery, heart-shaped, growing on petioles up to 30 cm long, dark green in color with a grayish-silver pattern. The original shape of the flowers is similar to outlandish butterflies - the petals are bent and pointed, sometimes have a fringed shape, and the color palette is incredibly wide - boiling white, pink, all shades of red, burgundy and purple. Cyclamen blooms for more than three months.
There is an opinion that indoor cyclamen is a capricious plant. Do not believe it! Cyclamen is unpretentious, just in its agricultural technology, as in the agricultural technology of any other plant, there are certain requirements, the mandatory fulfillment of which will allow you to easily cope with its cultivation. So:
- in no case store the tubers of the faded cyclamen in the refrigerator - after such storage, the bulb will not wake up;
- the cyclamen flower does not tolerate heat and stuffiness, but it lives well in a cool room at a temperature uncomfortable for humans - only 6-12 ºC;
- direct sunlight can burn the beautiful leaves of cyclamen;
- do not bury the cyclamen tuber in the ground: at least a third of the bulb should remain on the surface;
- cyclamen does not tolerate an excess of mineral salts in the soil, so be careful with fertilizers;
- a pot for cyclamen needs a small one, so that from the bulb to the wall of the pot there is a layer of soil no thicker than 2-3 cm.
And they often look for cyclamen instead of cyclamen. It's nothing. We will tell you how to grow both that and that flower.

Preparing and sowing seeds - step by step instructions
Growing cyclamen from seed takes place in several stages.
Seed preparation
They are pre-soaked in any stimulant for 18 hours. The most commonly used are Zircon, Epin-extra or Etamon, which are sold in any flower shop. The preparations are diluted according to the instructions attached to the preparation.
You can soak the seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or just in warm water. The prepared liquids impregnate a piece of gauze or 2 cotton pads folded in several layers. The seeds are soaked for 14 hours, while it is necessary to constantly monitor them so that they do not dry out.
At this stage, it is advisable to use different processing methods for several groups of seeds in order to further draw conclusions about the optimal soaking option.
Landing
In a special indoor greenhouse, which can be used as an opaque container, the prepared soil mixture is laid with a layer of 6 - 7 cm. The substrate is prepared from a mixture of leafy earth and peat in equal amounts. The soil is well compacted. The treated seeds are spread at a distance of 2 - 3 cm, after which they are sprinkled with a mixture of sand and peat with a layer of about a centimeter and watered generously.
To maintain a high level of humidity, the container with the sown seeds is covered with an opaque film or lid. The best conditions for germination are air temperature not higher than + 18 ° C and a darkened room.
The germination process takes a very long time, the first shoots may appear in 30 - 40 days. At first, they are a root with a small tuber. It takes root in the ground, after which pink-purple loops unfold from small nodules.
When erupting seedlings, quite often there is a slight difficulty in the fact that the first leaf does not manage to throw off the peel of the seed for a long time, and it cannot turn around. Usually, with a sufficiently high air humidity, the seedlings independently solve this problem, gradually throwing off the scales, but sometimes they remain in it for a rather long period.
You should not be afraid of this, since the next leaves will go from the nodule in the soil
However, you can help the plant, for which the sprout is carefully covered with a moistened cotton swab and left for an hour and a half. After this, the seed will become soft and easily removed from the shoot.
Another method is to use tweezers to remove dried scales, but there is a risk of damaging the sprout.
As soon as the first shoots appear, the container must be transferred to a bright place, but not in direct sunlight. If you have difficulty finding such a place, then the plants need to be slightly covered from the sun's rays. Young seedlings need daily moistening from a watering can with a fine strainer, or using a spray bottle
It is equally important to observe the temperature regime in the room, maintaining it at + 18 ° C.
Seedling picking
Cyclamen seedlings dive when one true leaf is finally formed and a second appears. By this time, the plant has already formed a small tuber. Seedlings are planted in pots or seedling boxes filled with soil consisting of equal parts of sand, leaf and sod soil.
You can put 2 - 3 seedlings in one bowl, they are placed in boxes according to the "6 by 6" scheme
You need to dive carefully, picking up a seedling with a clod of earth. The formed nodules must be completely covered with earth.
After planting the seedlings, the growth of the plant begins to go faster.
The planted young growth will take root for about 3 weeks, while maintaining a comfortable temperature for them no higher than + 20 ° C. To prevent the petioles from stretching and twisting, it is necessary to provide the plants with bright lighting. If for some reason it is impossible to arrange the backlight, you need to lower the temperature. This step will slow down the growth of flowers and protect them from deformation.
Transfer to a permanent place
The pot for the rooted cyclamen should not be large, because as the seedlings grow, they are transplanted several times. There must be a drain hole in the container. The bottom is covered with a two centimeter drainage layer (expanded clay, brick, pebble or foam), then an earthen mixture is poured.
In addition to peat, sandy and leafy soil is added to the soil. Planting seedlings is done so that the nodules rise above the soil by a centimeter - one and a half
Water the flowers through a pallet or carefully along the edge of the bowl, trying not to pour over the tubers and leaves
Cyclamen from seeds: the advantages of this growing method
How to get such a wonderful plant in your house? Of course, cyclamen can be purchased in the store, especially since there is currently no shortage. Most often, already flowering specimens are on sale, which from the first minute of their appearance in the house will delight with their beauty. But there are several pitfalls here.
In most cases, cyclamens come to the flower market from abroad, where the plants are grown in greenhouses or greenhouses. In order to achieve their rapid growth and lush flowering, producers use various fertilizers, growth hormones.
So it turns out the following: seeing a beautiful plant in a store, an amateur florist acquires it with pleasure. A week or two after the purchase, the first problems appear. Leaves dry, flowers begin to fall off. As a result, the plant dies. This often happens with purchased cyclamens. How can you avoid this? Grow cyclamen from seeds. This method allows you to get an unpretentious plant, initially adapted to the living conditions of its owner. Such a flower has excellent immunity, which increases its vitality and prolongs the growing season.
Planting process
Following the step-by-step seed planting guide will provide the best result, expressed in the fastest germination and full formation of the root and deciduous-stem systems of the flower.
Before planting, you need to carefully check the seeds for suitability for further use.
Pay attention to the remnants of the seed cover, which sometimes prevents the free development of new leaves.In some cases, it may be appropriate to remove the remaining parts of the seed coat yourself.
This manipulation can significantly accelerate the further growth of the seedling, but you should be careful - young shoots are extremely fragile
A layer of expanded clay or small pebbles is laid out at the bottom of the pot. Layer thickness 2-3 cm. In the absence of these materials, you can use clean sand. This is necessary to ensure good water permeability, which prevents siltation of the soil, and the creation of an air cushion, since the cyclamen needs a sufficient amount of oxygen.
Next, the soil is poured, prepared in advance
At the preparation stage, it is important to exclude the ingress of seeds of other plants into this soil, as well as larvae of pests that can spoil the undeveloped tuber of a flower
The height of the soil layer should not reach the top edge of the pot by 2-3 cm. The distance remaining to the top is needed to locate a sprout in it, which is placed in the center of the pot and sprinkled with earth.
It is necessary to lay the earth around the stalk in such a way that some of its trunk and the forming leaves remain above the surface of the ground. The space left to the top of the pot is needed to create a greenhouse effect.
This effect is achieved by covering the pot with plastic wrap. This is done until the height of the flower exceeds the level of the rim. When the plant grows more and more, it begins to rest against the film, that should be removed.
The foil blanket is not always used. Periodically, it must be removed so that the plant can "breathe" and does not burn out in an impromptu greenhouse. At the moment of opening, the pot is installed on the window, where the indirect rays of the sun can feed the young cyclamen and start the necessary processes in it.
Conditions for active growth
The health and appearance of plants in the future depend on proper care of the seedlings. All pots with young cyclamens are placed on a pallet with small pebbles. Water must be poured onto this stand - moisture on the tubers and leaves is very harmful to plants. The water should be separated, at room temperature. After 30–50 minutes after watering, its remnants are drained from the pallet so that mold or mildew does not start.
Under these conditions, you will be able to grow a sturdy and resilient plant with a compact rosette shape. Bushes that grew in the heat will look untidy loose. In addition, they are more susceptible to disease.
Drafts should be avoided - young plants are especially sensitive to them. The lighting should not be too bright. The best choice is west or east windows.
Please note that the first 3-4 months after the pick, the cyclamen spends energy mainly on growing tubers and the root system, so it may seem that the seedlings have stopped developing. In fact, this is not the case, when the roots get stronger, the growth of green mass begins.
Step-by-step disembarkation
Sowing begins with the preparation of the necessary components and the planting material itself.
It is important to follow the instructions here so that planting cyclamen with seeds at home is a success. It is imperative to select the correct soil and capacity, as well as to process the material.
Material preparation
The preliminary preparation of the seeds will help to plant the plant correctly. There are several ways to do this:
- Soak with Fairy or other dishwasher detergent. A few drops of the detergent composition are added to a container with water and the material is immersed. The container should stand for three days, while every day the liquid is replaced with a fresh one.
- Potassium permanganate. For the solution, several crystals of manganese are poured with water at room temperature so that the liquid becomes slightly pinkish. The seeds are soaked for about 15 hours.
- The third option involves the use of special preparations that can be purchased at the same flower shop.The rules for their use are usually found on the packaging.
- And the easiest way is to simply fill the planting material with cold water for a day.
Soil selection
The soil should be light so that it is easier for seedlings to break through. You can buy it in specialized departments or try mixing it yourself.
If you want to use the second option, then peat is suitable for this purpose, which is combined with leaf humus in a 1: 1 ratio. Then the resulting mixture is sieved, removing dirt and larvae, and disinfected. To do this, again, there are several ways:
Calcination. You can spend in the oven and in the microwave. The soil is poured onto a baking sheet or into a bowl with low sides and placed in the selected unit. The exposure time is 10-15 minutes.
Use of steam. Steaming is also a great option, a water bath will do the trick.
But it is important to remember that after the procedure, the soil must stand for at least a week and only then be used.
Processing with potassium permanganate. The soil is poured with a hot solution of manganese and allowed to dry completely.
Planting process
Starting this stage, the work surface is covered with oilcloth, gloves are put on hands, although this is not necessary. For work, you will need: a container (it is better to take a square, not very deep, but wide), soil, water, seeds and a cover for the greenhouse. The process itself is as follows.
- Holes are made in the bottom of the box if they are not provided for by the design.
- The first layer is laid with foam or pebbles.
- Next, sprinkle exactly on top with soil with a layer of 5-6 cm.
- The soil is moistened with water.
- Seeds are spread on moist soil at a distance of at least 3 cm from each other.
- Soil is again poured on top, but the layer thickness should not exceed 1-2 cm.
- The last step is to spray the soil with a spray bottle. This is necessary to moisten the earth, but at the same time not to blur it.
This completes the sowing. It remains only to cover the box with glass and put it in a cool place.
Crop care
In addition, the seeds must be aired daily. A small greenhouse needs to be opened every day for 10 minutes.
If you followed all the rules for caring for seedlings, then literally in a month the first shoots will appear. It should be noted that not all cyclamen varieties have good germination. For example, the Kiss and Apple varieties can germinate for six months. But the Persian cyclamen germinates quickly.
light purple
In order to avoid the suspension of the growth process, it is necessary to carefully remove the skin with tweezers. To do this, the plant must first be prepared by wetting the formations with a spray bottle and letting it soften for at least half an hour. Do not forget about watering as well. It must be increased, which will allow the plant to get rid of the skin on its own.
It is necessary to transplant sprouts to a permanent place when bushes with two or three true leaves are formed. Under the most favorable conditions, this will happen in 3 months.
How to prepare and sow seeds?
Planting cyclamen seeds begins with the fact that you need to purchase or prepare all the material that can be useful when growing these flowers.
You need to prepare:
- Soil (the composition should include peat and leafy soil or vermiculite and peat in equal parts).
- A vessel with drainage holes.
- Drainage (polystyrene or expanded clay).
A drainage layer is poured into the vessel, and then prepared soil is poured.
To ensure fast emergence of healthy plants, flower growers have developed several methods with which the seeds are processed before planting. A beginner cyclamen hobbyist can divide the seed into equal parts and try both methods to find the right one.
Option number 1
The seed is soaked in cold water for three days.After this time, you need to dissolve three drops of any dishwashing detergent in a glass of water and pour the seeds with this solution.
In this form, you need to hold the seeds for a few more days, but every day, changing the solution. In this case, the water should not be warm, so as not to cause the decay process.
Option number 2
The second method is to treat the seed with special preparations. It can be ordinary potassium permanganate, "Epin" or "Zircon".
Potassium permanganate must be diluted to a slightly pink color, a stronger solution can damage the seeds. Other drugs are diluted into three hundred milliliters of water, three drops.
This seed treatment method is very fast because the soaking lasts no more than sixteen hours.
Now, after soaking procedures, it will be easier to grow from seeds, because, according to experts, even the oldest seeds germinate after treatment with Zircon and Epin.
The treated seed is planted in a prepared container with soil. Seeds can be planted both in a dug trench, and laid out on a substrate, sprinkled with earth. The main thing is to observe the rule that each seed should not lie closer than two centimeters and further than three centimeters from the other. And the sowing depth should be two centimeters.
