Lilies: growing, planting, care, varieties

Oriental hybrid varieties

Plants of this group are rightfully considered the most decorative. They are of medium height, but their flowers are large, reaching a diameter of 30-35 cm. Flowering occurs belatedly, in August-September days. The flowers are simple and double, most of them are painted in pink, red, white shades. The flower shape is the variety itself.

The feature of these hybrid varieties is the edging of a color different from the flower or a strip in the center of each petal.

The varieties are whimsical. They can be attacked by viruses, plus plants are very fond of heat. If lilies are grown in mid-latitudes, they will need to be sheltered during the winter season, but even under cover they may not survive. But there is also a positive point. Among these plants, there are flowers of low growth, which are successfully cultivated in containers and will remain in the winter season in places that do not freeze.

Varieties: Magni Kors, Garden Party, Mona Lisa, Entertainer.

But plants of high stature can also be well cultivated in mid-latitudes, if bulbs are excavated in the autumn season for the winter period.

Sorts: Stargazer, Salmon Star, Casablanca, Le Rev, Crystal Star, Lovely Girl, Barbados, Muscadet.
Terry lilies of amazing beauty come out only 3-4 years after planting.

Varieties: "Broken Heart", "Miss Lucy", "Polar Star", "Distant Drum", "Double Surprise", "Soft Music".
These hybrid varieties can bloom for about 30 days or more. This is their main difference from Asian varieties.

Lilies in garden landscaping: photos and composition options

All lilies fit perfectly into the garden context. The plant does not have large leaves and root rosettes, so the lily is everywhere in place. Growing among perennials, they squeeze through the leaves and bring out their magnificent flowers.

There are many variations on the use of lilies in garden design. The choice of a particular one depends on the type and variety of the flower. So, if we are talking about a stunted variety, it can be planted on the site to create natural borders. Tall varieties can be used as tapeworms in the background of a flower bed. Flowers can be planted in groups - either as separate islands consisting of several varieties of lilies, or in tandem with annual and perennial plants.

Below are several options for compositions used in garden landscaping, in which lilies take center stage:

Lilies are well suited for growing along paths, curbs, in ridges: Thunberg, Garrisi, Formosan, drooping. These are flowers with narrow tubular buds, the average height of the bushes is from 40 to 90 cm. How effectively the plant can outline the alleys and how luxurious lilies with tubular inflorescences look in the garden design, evaluate in the photo below.

For a single planting, lilies are considered ideal: golden, Candidum, Regale, tiger, turban, red. They are famous for high straight stems, reaching a height of 1 to 1.5 m, large expressive leaves, large inflorescences. Single lily cultivation is shown in the photo: note for yourself the obvious advantages of this design solution.

To create flower beds from lilies, plants of different types or several varieties of the same species are used, which are planted in tiers.

The front tier is low-growing lilies, and the next tier is tall flowers. Varieties should be selected and planted so that the front tier blooms earlier, and then the color appears on all the others. See how exotic lilies look in multi-tiered flower beds in a garden landscape design, in the photo:

The duet of lilies and roses is considered very successful. Queens do not compete, but complement each other. Lilies of tall varieties with dark inflorescences with light climbing roses are ideally combined. In this tandem, lilies need to be planted behind the roses. Plants with flowers of the same color can also be used - the effect will be no less striking.

The original combination of lilies and roses in landscape design is shown in the photo - admire, be inspired and start recreating on your site:

Lilies are also good with peonies, phloxes, delphiniums. Peonies make an excellent backdrop for lilies when planted either in front of them or behind them. You can create such a luxurious multi-level composition: the first tier is ground cover phlox blooming in May, the second is peonies blooming in June, the third is tall lilies giving color throughout July.

Provided that lilies are grown in a flowerbed in combination with other plants, long-legged varieties can be "knocked out" with a cuff, geraniums or hosta.

Duets of incredible beauty create lilies in combination with evergreen coniferous shrubs. Flowers are often planted in the front, and if you buy tall varieties, you can place them in the background.

Create new landscape compositions, experiment and reach new heights in growing such amazing and mesmerizing flowers, which are rightfully considered lilies.

Planting and leaving

Before planting black lilies, it is necessary to thoroughly dig the ground to a depth of 30-45 cm, since the roots of the plants go deep down. If the soil is clayey, then river sand and peat are introduced to improve the chemical composition of the substrate, otherwise the water will stagnate and cause rotting of the root system.

It is advisable to fertilize the land with organic matter: compost or rotted manure. The fertilizer application rate is 1.5-2 buckets for each square meter of the plot. To reduce the acidity level of the soil, add thinned wood ash (200 g / sq. M) or chalk (300-500 g / sq. M).

Before planting, it is necessary to remove all dried roots and damaged scales. Works are best carried out in the first decade of September. Immediately before planting, it is recommended to soak the bulbs in a weak solution of potassium permanganate to disinfect and prevent fungal infections.

The bulbs are buried by 15-20 cm. A distance of 25-30 cm is left between several seedlings. Keep in mind that black lilies quickly acquire daughter bulbs, so they will have to be separated and planted every 3-5 years.

The black lily is very demanding to care for, the land around the plant must be regularly weed out and loosened. Watering is required regularly, while it is better to direct the water under the root so that it does not fall on the stem and leaves of the plant.

Black lily reproduces with the help of corms or seeds. The first method is considered the most convenient and effective; even a novice florist can cope with such work. All you need to do is dig up the lilies and divide the nest of bulbs. Please note that the separated tubers should be planted as soon as possible. If this is not possible, they should be placed in a cool place and stored at a temperature of 0-5 degrees in river sand or wrapped in moss.

There are rumors among the people that there are lilies in the form of pyramids, their varieties are capable of forming up to 200-300 flowers on one bush. This rumor came about thanks to our strain. Another name for these lily flowers is bush. All of these names are erroneous because lilies almost always form only 1 stalk. The second explanation for this misconception is that fasciations sometimes occur with species - several stems grow together. As a result, naturally, the stem becomes strong and forms up to 200-300 flowers. It is not programmed and does not depend on any factors. You can see this type of flowering in lilies "Marlene", "Aphrodite", "Elijah", "Red Hot", "Fleur".

Types and popular varieties

There are two types of lily trees.

Species lilies

These are tree-like lilies that can be found in the wild, but it is almost impossible to grow them on your site, and sometimes even dangerous. In our climate, natives of other countries do not grow, such as Candidum, Speziosum, Auratum, Nepalense. Our tiger lily grows very well, but by planting it, you can lose your beautiful garden plants, as it is a carrier of the mosaic virus.

It is worth describing the cardiocrinum lily in more detail, as it is now gaining more and more popularity. Cardiocrinum "Gigantum" is an alien from Asia. It has heart-shaped leaves. The cardiocrinum blooms in the 4-5th year, after which the bulb dies off, but daughter bulbs form around it.

The plant is quite whimsical, therefore, like all species of lily-trees, it is difficult to grow it.

Oriental-Tubular Hybrids

These lilies are obtained through a complex hybrid crossing of Oriental and Trumpets hybrids. Hence they got their name: OT hybrids.

This type of lily has tall, strong stems with a lot of flowers. Plants are winter-hardy, resistant to various diseases.

Therefore, they are grown everywhere - both for cutting and for decorating garden plots.

Let us consider in more detail the description of some varieties of OT-hybrid lilies.

"Purple Prince". Truly a prince among lilies, growing up to two meters in height. Its giant flowers are up to 30 cm in diameter. Silk petals of a rich dark burgundy color with a yellow center in the bud look generally black. The Purple Prince was bred in Canada and refined in Holland. The variety is resistant to diseases, temperature extremes.

"Pretty woman" (translated means "beauty"). The stems reach 2.5 meters in height, while they are so strong that they do not even require a garter. Large fragrant flowers, when opened, are creamy, and then turn white. "Pretty woman" is unpretentious, will grow well and bloom in any area.

Scheherazade. A tree lily that grows up to 2.5 meters under good conditions. The flowers are large, bowl-shaped, directed downward. The petals are bright pink with a yellow border and golden center, covered with numerous specks. "Scheherazade" refers to late varieties of lilies, blooms in late August.

"Anastasia". Late flowering variety of giant lily. Flowers 25-30 cm in diameter with bright pink in the center and light along the edge of the petals with a white throat. Delivers a delicate pleasant aroma in the morning and evening. The stem reaches 1.5-2 meters. Lily is undemanding to the conditions of detention.

Names, descriptions and photos of bush lily varieties

In order not to fall for the trick of sellers and not to buy a non-existent variety of lilies, it is necessary not only to be practically savvy, but also theoretically to understand the varieties and physiology. Breeders have bred a huge number of varieties of Liliaceae. Most of them are obtained by crossing different species with each other. They differ in the height of the bush, the size and color of the flower. Consider the most common varieties with photos.

Asian hybrids

There are about 300 varieties. These hybrids were obtained by crossing about 9 species of lilies with each other. Their height reaches from 30 cm to 1 m. Flowers are unpretentious in care, resistant to frost, diseases, capable of frequent reproduction. The flower is large enough - up to 15-17 cm in diameter. The color can be found for every taste: from white to green. The difference from all other Liliaceae is the complete absence of smell. In the vastness of our country, you can find varieties:

  1. Aaron - has white-yellow double petals.

Curly hybrids

There are about 200 lilies in the species. The best environment for their growth is a darkened area. Professional florists recommend planting them among garden trees. Cold-hardy plants. They do not tolerate transplants.A distinctive feature of this species is that they have petals twisted upward at the tips, which are small in size (up to 5 cm). There are 2 varieties in our area.

  1. Claude Shride is a plant up to 2 m dark red with a purple tint.

Interspecific hybrids

This group includes a variety of varieties, which cannot be attributed to a specific species. The first letters of their name mean their "parents": LA (Asiatic lily), VIT (oriental and tubular), LV (leafy oriental) and VO (East Asian). All of them combine the characteristics of those varieties that are crossed with each other.

For example, the VID hybrid Pretty Wumen is a tall lily, reaching 180 m. Its peak flowering falls in July-August. This flower, as you can see in the photo, is large, white, smoothly turning into yellow.

Alstroemeria: planting and care in the open field

To understand how to grow alstroemeria, you should start by purchasing plant seedlings. You can grow it from seeds, but for this you have to work hard, and it will begin to bloom only after a few years.

Important! It is better to buy seedlings in specialized stores, and not from hands. Otherwise, there is a high chance of running into a sick plant, which will quickly die.

It is recommended to plant ready-made seedlings in open ground in May, when the warm weather becomes stable and frost will definitely not happen. The soil should warm up to at least 20 ° C. The seedlings should be planted at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other, the holes should have a depth of about 30 cm.

To prevent the plant from rotting from an excess of moisture, it is recommended to pour a little expanded clay or crushed stone at the bottom of the hole. A layer of compost is placed on top for plant nutrition. The rest of the hole is filled with soil and watered.

The area where alstroemeria is planted must be protected from the wind. She needs a lot of sun throughout the day. Light partial shade from nearby bushes and trees is recommended so that the rays of the sun do not burn the delicate leaves and petals of the plant.

Important! In the middle lane, the bush often freezes out due to harsh winters, if it is not protected from frost. It should be planted in open ground only in areas with a mild climate.
