Watering
This flower is highly resistant to drought, so it feels better with a lack of moisture than with an excess of it. Perennial Arabis should be watered sparingly and only during prolonged dry periods, using a garden watering can. Excessive irrigation should not be allowed, as it will provoke rotting of the root system. Drainage of stones, gravel and pebbles should be done to protect against heavy rainfall.
Loosening and weeding
Loosening the land is required after each irrigation. While the plant is young, it needs frequent weeding and removal of weeds. After a while, Arabis will gain enough strength to suppress weeds on its own.
Top dressing
Arabis should be fed with organic fertilizers in the spring, before the buds form. Mineral complex fertilizers need root before the flowering of the plant.
Pruning
Due to the rapid growth of stems, Arabis planted in carpet beds and mosaic garden compositions requires systematic pruning and shaping in order to maintain aesthetic appeal. Cuttings can be further used for plant propagation.
Transfer
The roots of arabis are very thin and fragile, so it must be transplanted very carefully in order to prevent damage:
- Make several 25 cm deep landing holes.
- Moderately moisten the soil under the bush.
- Gently loosen the soil around the plant and remove it together with the earthy clod.
- Transfer the bush to the prepared hole, cover with earth, slightly compact and water.
Arabis in a new place easily takes root and begins to grow.
Diseases and pests
Arabis is resistant to pests and various diseases, but in rare cases it can be affected by viral mosaics. The main symptom of this disease is the appearance of small brown spots on the surface of the leaves, which subsequently increase in size until they completely merge with each other. Unfortunately, the affected plant does not respond to treatment. It must be dug out of the soil and destroyed. After that, treat the area with a concentrated solution of potassium manganese. No horticultural crops can be grown on it for at least a year.
Among the insect pests that pose a threat to Arabis:
- cruciferous flea;
- snails and slugs;
- caterpillars of cabbage scoop.
Wood ash for dusting is ineffective in this case. Treatment of plantings with special preparations is required - for example, "Biotlin", "Aktara" or "Karbofos".
Growing
Arabis is a light-loving plant, it needs non-shaded areas. Can be planted outdoors in gardens to get a lot of sun.
In terms of soil, rezuha is unpretentious. You can use loose and dry earth mixtures to plant it. But in the case of poor soil, it is necessary to apply organic or mineral fertilizers. In the case of dense soil, a little sand should be added.
It is necessary to feed before flowering begins. Humus or mineral complexes for garden flowers are used as top dressing.
It is necessary to systematically water the plant so that it blooms profusely, forming a beautiful carpet. When irrigation is over, it is imperative to weed the soil and remove the weeds. It is necessary to shorten the shoots that grow strongly and grow in different directions, so that the flower has a neat appearance.
When flowering has passed, the shoots should be cut by one third. In order for the bush to retain its decorative effect, it is necessary to immediately remove the wilted inflorescences.
Many varieties of arabis have high frost resistance, so they do not need to be covered for the winter. However, a few varieties can only withstand temperatures as low as -7. Therefore, you need to cut the stems of these varieties so that the length is 40 millimeters. Then cover with dry leaves, covering material or spruce branches.
Reproduction
Arabis can be propagated in various ways - by layering, seeds, cuttings or division. Each method has its own specifics. Each person must choose the method himself. However, Caucasian and Alpine Arabis are best propagated by seed.
If planted with seeds, then this should be done in the last month of spring and on open soil. If you grow seedlings, then they must then be transplanted to a permanent site when the frosts pass.
Seeds are planted as early as April in warm areas. They need to be buried 5 millimeters, and then irrigate the garden. It is possible to start growing seedlings by placing the grown seedlings in open soil when the time is warm.
It is necessary to place the sowing material in small boxes, which consist of a mixture sand with pebbles (1: 3) and garden soil. Then these boxes need to be removed to a place where the temperature remains between 20 and 24 degrees. You can build a small agrospan greenhouse so that there is a high germination rate. It is systematically necessary to remove the shelter and spray the soil.
The first shoots will be in a month. Then you need to reduce watering and remove the shelter. It is necessary to dive the seedlings into separate pots or into a large container with a distance of 0.3 meters when the first leaves appear. The seedlings are hardened before sowing.
For two weeks we take her out into the street, while increasing the time spent there. Keep away from drafts, because they have a bad effect on the plant. The seedlings must be placed in the allotted area when the hardening is over. The site needs an open one. Otherwise, the flowering will not be so abundant, the flowers will decrease in size.
To propagate Arabis by division, you need to divide them and plant them in the spring or autumn period, when flowering ends. It is necessary to select a strongly growing bush, dig it up and carefully divide it with a sharp knife into three or four identical parts. However, healthy roots with growth points should remain. Seedlings are buried in the planting holes with a distance of 0.3-0.4 meters between each other.
Cuttings are carried out from late spring to early summer. It is necessary to cut cuttings from an adult plant, reaching a length of 0.1 meters. The sheet plates are removed from the bottom, placed in the sand at an angle. Requires daily watering with spraying cuttings. The rhizome will take about three weeks to form. Then they sit down in their permanent places.
Arabis is a valuable plant that uniquely decorates any site. With it, your garden will be lively, unusual and attractive.
Landscape use
Most often, the plant is used to decorate curbs, rockeries and rocky hills. If you plant it in the springtime, it will not bloom until next year. In addition, you can plant some kind of annual so that the slide does not become empty.
Rezuha can refine the problematic parts. She adorns large garden trees with near-trunk circles near shrubs.
Remember that the plant can grow rapidly to form a large and thick carpet. They are planted separately from other crops to form a meadow.
Arabis is a wonderful honey plant. The wonderful smell attracts bees well. An area that is sheltered from the wind is needed if you want flowers to retain their scent in gardens for a long time.
Diseases and pests
One of the advantages of Alpine Arabis is the fact that it practically does not suffer from diseases and does not attract insects. The main crop problem is mold and rot resulting from over-watering. Sometimes razuha gets sick with a viral mosaic. You can detect the problem by the brown spots that appear on the sheets, the size of which increases over time. Unfortunately, the disease cannot be cured, and therefore the bush is dug out of the ground and burned. The area where Arabis developed is treated with a manganese solution, after which quarantine is declared on it for 12 months. Of the insects on the culture, you can find the cruciferous flea. From organic means to fight the pest, wood ash is used, and from insecticides - "Iskra" and "Karbofos".
Razuha planting
If you plant Arabis correctly, it will begin to grow intensively in the current year, delighting with its flowering and beautiful foliage.
Sowing seeds
To make seedlings, seeds are planted in containers with soil to a depth 0.5 centimeters. For germination, it is necessary that the soil temperature is 20 degrees. To increase germination, the surface of the soil is covered with a non-woven covering material. For this, for example, you can use agrospan. It is allowed to plant several seeds in one hole.
After three weeks, the shelter is removed, the seedlings are transferred to warm and well lit a place. Now you need to provide abundant watering.
When the leaves appear, the seedlings are seated in separate cups. 10-12 days before planting, the plants are hardened, taking them outside for a short time.
Landing in the ground
For planting, pits are prepared at a distance of 30-35 centimeters from each other. The best time for this is late April or early May.
Before planting, it is recommended to add mineral and organic fertilizers, as well as pebbles, sand and sod to improve soil drainage.
Plant propagation
The reproduction methods of Arabis depend on the variety and decorativeness of the plant. Available to species flowers of Arabis alpine cultivation from seeds. For decorative and terry forms of the plant, the method of reproduction by dividing the bush or by cuttings is used, since the maternal characteristics of crops are not transmitted with the seed method of propagation.

Seed method
When choosing a place where the plant will grow constantly, one must take into account that this plant loves light. The better the illumination of the site, the more abundant the flowering of Arabis will be, the greenery will be brighter, and the stems will be denser. There are also some guidelines for preparing the soil. This plant grows in its natural habitat on nutrient-poor soils. Therefore, in the garden for Arabis, there should be loose soil, well-drained, with the addition of coarse river sand... Excessive dampness and stagnant water are detrimental to the root system of this plant.
Planting seeds in open ground includes several stages:
- in April, having chosen a shady area, they sow Arabis seeds to a depth of 1 cm;
- the seedbed is covered with a covering material;
- immediately after the seedlings germinate, the covering material is removed;
- at the end of May, on a cloudy day, the mature seedlings, after having watered them, are transplanted to a permanent place along with an earthen clod.
Planting seeds in seedlings is done as follows:
- in April, having prepared containers with a soil mixture consisting of turf soil and coarse river sand in a 1: 1 ratio, seeds are sown into the heated ground to a depth of 1 cm;
- containers with crops are covered with foil and placed in a warm place. The optimum temperature is 20 C;
- after germination of seeds, after about 20-25 days, the film is removed;
- when the first leaves appear, the seedlings are taken out to the garden for hardening;
- when growing arabis from seeds, it can be planted in open ground when three leaves appear.
When propagated by seeds, Arabis will begin to bloom from the second year of life.
Dividing the bush
In this way, terry varieties and other decorative species are propagated. You can divide bushes that have reached at least 3 years. The procedure is carried out at the end of August or at the beginning of September, but after the flowering period of the plant is over.
The bush of the plant, intended for division, is carefully removed from the soil, shaken off the soil from the roots of the plant and divided into the required number of parts with a well-sharpened knife or pruner. An important point is the processing of slices
It is carried out with crushed coal or ash immediately after division. This will speed up wound healing.
Further, the landing of the resulting planting material itself is carried out directly. The site should be selected and prepared in advance. The holes for planting new plants are placed at a distance of 35-40 cm from each other. Planted flowers must be watered abundantly with water.
Eremurus: planting and caring for a flower in the fall
By cuttings
For propagation of decorative varieties of Arabis, cuttings can be used. Proceed to procurement of planting material you can only after the end of the period flowering. To obtain a cutting, you need to pull out a leaf by gently pulling it towards you. Thus, a leaf with a heel is obtained. Roots will subsequently grow from it.
Another way to get a cutting is to cut off the top of the stem. It is necessary to cut off about 10 cm. All lower leaves are removed from the resulting cutting.
The resulting planting material is planted at an angle into the soil and greenhouse conditions are created. Caring for such a bed is reduced to maintaining the level of moisture, timely airing the planted cuttings and removing possible condensation. After the leaves of the seedlings acquire elasticity, they should be transplanted to a permanent site.
Planting seedlings and caring for them
It is possible to transplant Arabis seedlings into open ground when 2-3 leaves appear on them. The scheme for growing seedlings for their optimal growth is 40x40 cm. Optionally, you can plant up to 3-4 plants in one hole. In this case, the entire area will be evenly covered with a flower cover.
To ensure the lush flowering of Arabis and the extension of this period, the soil should be fed with mineral fertilizers immediately after planting. Often, the plant begins to bloom the next year after planting the seedlings. But there are also cases when, in appropriate weather conditions, the plant is covered with flowers at the end of summer, in August.
So that next year Arabis will again delight you with its lush flowering, the stems on which there were flowers should be cut, leaving only 3-4 cm, and sprinkled with earth.
But do not rush to throw away the cut parts, they can be applied by growing by cuttings (vegetative method).
In terms of watering, Arabis flowers have enough periodic natural moisture. Watering should be used only during a prolonged dry period. Arabis, in principle, is not a very whimsical plant to the soil, but, nevertheless, it will feel best in loose soil.
An excellent option that contributes to rapid growth and violent flowering is sandy soil. Ideally, if a place for permanent breeding of Arabis is chosen in a sunny area, protected from through wind currents. With this arrangement, the delicious scent will spread throughout virtually the entire garden. You can plant in partial shade, but in this case it will be more difficult to achieve lush flowering.
When caring for Arabis, special attention should be paid to loosening the soil.
