How to grow remontant raspberries in the Krasnodar Territory?

Apparently, in a long-standing dispute about whether it is necessary to pinch remontant raspberry bushes to increase fruiting, or not, summer residents still figured out - this should be done. But another question arose: when exactly? Well, let's discuss this aspect as well.

The plumbing is to blame, here!

I will try and share my experience.

My longtime favorite is raspberries. She's a repairman. I think this view is best suited for areas where it is hot in summer, but there are significant differences in day and night temperatures.

Another plus of such raspberries is that they have their first harvests on last year's shoots. In the spring, young replacement shoots appear, with which, as soon as they grow to my waist, I pinch the tops. And there are so many berries from this that I don’t know where to put it.

True, now my harvests are not particularly dense. And all because my raspberries have been growing for many years in the place where the water supply was laid. But then I had to change the pipes, and it is clear that everything there turned out to be dug and upside down, the raspberries went under the knife. Although it was bitter, there was nothing to do. But I transplanted the best bushes. They, of course, were not happy to find such a change of residence and took a long time to gain strength after the forced move.

Therefore, I decided to buy new seedlings, especially since now the market is simply overwhelmed with all kinds of varieties. And each of them, according to the sellers, is the best in the world. But I decided that they were not looking for good from good, and again I chose a remontant - Heritage... I bought it, brought it home, planted it.

It took root well. In the fall, I removed everything at the root (as the sellers advised me). The next year, it rose well and at the end of summer began to bear fruit, after which the yields only increased. One thing was embarrassing: I didn't really like the taste of the berries.

And when Heritage fell ill with gall midge, I uprooted it all.

Berries in the snow

I went to the market again, bought Taganka (also renovated). I planted young growth in the spring, I look - and it all wilted. And let me put pegs under it. Tied, straightened, watching.

And I see - she has come to life, everything is fresh, healthy. In August, it began to bear fruit: the taste of the berries turned out to be simply amazing, the fruits hold well in the brush. In the spring of next year, shoots appeared. I didn’t thin it, what had to be done, and it turned out thickened. And the bushes went to grow the way they want. Okay, I think, let them frolic, anyway I'll pinch at the beginning of June.

And what do you think?

I didn’t do that on time either. My Taganka only reached my hands in July. I pinched it, looked at the bushes a few days later, and they were all shabby, unsightly. I ask myself: "Well, what have you achieved by being late with a pinch?" I called a saleswoman I knew from whom I bought seedlings - so, they say, and so, what to hope for? And she replies that there is nothing wrong, only now the berries will be later. And, indeed, at the end of August, flowers appeared on the side shoots, and then berries. And I was harvesting until the end of November, until the snowfall!

She cut off some brushes with berries and put them on the table like a bouquet - beautiful, as if summer was back in the yard.

When small frosts began, she covered it with covering material at night, which she removed from De Barao's late tomatoes. In general, I was once again convinced that remontant raspberries are quite easy to care for, productive and unpretentious. And to remove or not to remove the shoots in the fall is a master's business. Personally, I cut without hesitation.

And one more conclusion I made: with the help of pinching and shelter, you can significantly extend the harvest. In that same year, no one had raspberries in their gardens in late autumn, and my bushes had delicious red berries.

And I also tried to grow remontant raspberries in the same way as an ordinary one-time: I fenced the garden with slate, made the distance between the plants about 1 m, left only one or two shoots for replacement.

And the result was surprisingly good! The raspberry branches were thick, and the berries were very large. Yellow large disposable raspberries and Cumberland... The latter is completely unpretentious and does not get sick with anything.

Sometimes I go out to the market to offer buyers something from my generous harvests. But to lay out the goods, you need a table.

how to grow remontant raspberries in the Krasnodar Territory

First, for this I took cardboard boxes from one of the sellers. But then I decided to become more independent and made a folding "showcase" from such ordinary packaging, which easily fits into a bag. I came to the market, laid it out, here you have a table and a house (see fig). I jokingly call it “my know-how”.

So, in order. You need to take the box, remove the two halves at the top, cut in the corners and pierce holes there at a distance of 1-1.5 cm, then insert the ties into them.

how to grow remontant raspberries in the Krasnodar Territory

There is no such person in the Beloglinsky District of the Krasnodar Territory who does not know Vladimir Tabolin. What he is known for, we will tell a little later. Until then ... we met at the office. Tobolin was sitting at his desk at the computer. I noted his imposing figure - a middle-aged man of heroic build. We got to know each other and started talking. The owner breathed with charm and simplicity of disposition, so the contact was immediately established. I explained to him the purpose of my visit. Tobolin turned out to be friendly and ready to share the rich experience gained over many years of hard work. It was drizzling outside the window, so we decided not to go to the farm in the slush, but to have a chat right there, in the office. I was interested in how the person sitting in front of me learned to masterfully grow raspberries. And how he came to this particular berry culture. In our area, farmers grow vegetables and herbs, but I've never heard of raspberries. And Vladimir Tabolin has such successes ...

The road to the current occupation was long. After graduating from the Kuban Agricultural Institute, Vladimir returned to his native collective farm "Russia", where he worked as an agronomist for five years. It was here that his role as a specialist was clearly manifested. The yield of grain crops increased every year. Tabolinsky's mind and efforts were clearly in demand in his own household. Things were going well until the disastrous nineties struck. Dawn went out, scattered into small farms. The agronomist has become unclaimed. Vladimir Anatolyevich began to try himself in different firms, but it was not in his nature to work for someone else's uncle. I decided to start my own business. With his own savings and credit money, he bought the base of the former Agricultural Chemistry and calibration equipment for sunflower seeds of confectionery varieties. He sorted and packed seeds, selling them to firms that roasted seeds. Things went well, a circle of acquaintances in the "fried" business was outlined. But firms began to enlarge, their appetites grew, and prices for raw materials fell lower and lower. So it became unprofitable to deal with sunflower. Representatives of firms began to bypass the purchase of seeds directly from producers. In 2010, after calculating everything and realizing the disadvantage of doing calibration, Tabolin decided to sell his company.

Berry-raspberry lured into a new business. With the money earned from the sale of his business, Tabolin decided to invest every penny in agriculture. I reasoned this way: an agricultural specialist should work on the land, produce any product, but not be an intermediary in buying and selling. And he began to grow raspberries, beloved by everyone for their taste and useful properties. Apart from what he previously knew about this berry, there was little. Tobolin plunged into printed sources, got into the Internet. It turned out that raspberries heal from any diseases, the berries of which, even after heat treatment, do not lose their useful properties! Why, there is no such person who, in childhood, with a cold, was not given tea with raspberry jam. By the way, a good friend advised me to grow this berry. And what, the price for it never falls, you will not remain at a loss! If, of course, you approach the matter with all seriousness. All the money he had, Tabolin invested in planting the plantation. He laid it on an area of 20 hectares using Western technology. I chose the Polish variety "Polyana", a high-yielding one. The stem of the berry is stable and does not require a trellis. The berries are dense. Strong, with good keeping quality. Cooled to 0-2 degrees, they are stored for two weeks. In addition, this variety is intended for combine harvesting.

The American entrepreneur bought it, the only combine for harvesting berries in the country so far. And his plantation turned out to be one of the largest in Russia. And he got down to business.

For four years, Vladimir Anatolyevich has gained a good experience in growing raspberries. The plantation of this moisture-loving culture is equipped with a drip irrigation device. Raspberries tolerate frosts well, but the Kuban heat is not to her liking. I had to be convinced of this in last year's merciless heat, which negatively affected both the yield and the size of the berries. The heat crushed about a third of the grown crop and tied it tightly to the stalk. You can't clean it up with a combine. I had to involve manual labor for the harvest, and still a lot of berries remained in the field. The arriving Polish experts suggested that the abnormally hot weather was the cause of the losses. They gave advice - to cover the plantation with a sun-protection net. But this required money, and, unfortunately, raspberries were not included in the support program, so you have to find the funds yourself. Entrepreneur Tabolin took global experience in product sales by purchasing the necessary equipment for this. The berries are now sorted into the first and second grades right in the field, packed in plastic containers with a capacity of 250 grams. After harvesting, the prepackaged berry is sharply cooled within two hours after harvesting and only then is sent to the distribution network. The owner has no sales problems.

Today is the first year since Tabolin began selling raspberry seedlings. He does not complain about life. And if an emergency situation arises, he simply looks for a way out of it. And he always remembers the popular saying: "You will be fed from the earth." Rightly said.

Over the past few years, some experienced gardeners have increasingly seen such a berry variety as remontant raspberry. The main advantage of this raspberry variety is the ability to harvest twice a season. Caring for this type of raspberry will not be difficult. It should be noted that you also need to know some of the features of cultivation if you decide to plant remontant raspberries on your site.

Growing and caring for remontant raspberries

As you know, raspberries of this variety have the ability to give not one harvest, like a regular variety, but two, at the end of June and at the beginning of September. But you should be aware that the quality of the berry can deteriorate due to the number of harvests. For accurate regulation of yields, proper pruning and timely care of the bushes is necessary.

Pruning is done by cutting the shoots one-fourth the length, this will ensure that the crop is obtained twice. On these shoots, the raspberries of the first summer harvest will ripen, and when they grow again, then the second harvest will ripen in the fall. So that the bushes do not lose strength for small shoots and shoots, they must also be cut off during the summer. The next pruning is recommended in the spring, in this case, shoots that are damaged or frozen are removed. It is not necessary to cut the shoots to the end, but to the first whole bud, then the yield losses will be minimal.

Planting remontant raspberries according to the method does not differ much from the usual variety, although there are some peculiarities. When choosing a place for planting, it should be borne in mind that remontant raspberries cannot be planted in the place where the usual one grew, because the land will be depleted by the bushes that grew earlier. Also, remontant raspberries should not be planted after potatoes and tomatoes. The best place for planting raspberries of this variety will be that part of the land where nothing has grown before.

Watering remontant raspberries is different from the usual method for a simple variety, especially when the bushes are beginning to bear fruit. It is important to know that you need to water once a week in the amount of two buckets of water per square meter. Experienced gardeners use mulch to reduce watering, covering the soil with it, thereby eliminating the need for loosening. The roots of the remontant raspberry are almost on the surface of the soil, so it is necessary to loosen the soil carefully.

Feeding raspberries should not be left aside, this is an important point in growing, since for a double harvest, the shrub will need many useful microelements. The very first feeding is done at the beginning of March or when the snow has completely melted. During the flowering period, the following top dressing is done using potassium sulfate and superphosphate. The final top dressing should be done after the entire crop has been collected.

October and November are the time in the Kuban for planting seedlings in the garden. The fruiting period of berry crops ends and a new hot season begins for gardeners. Roots are replacing the berries. The gardeners Kartavtsevs from the village of Novoselsky told us about the peculiarities of the autumn period.

how to grow remontant raspberries in the Krasnodar Territory

Tops or roots?

What gives more income to gardeners - berries or seedlings, so to speak, tops or roots? Spouses Boris Modestovich and Natalya Anatolyevna Kartavtsevs believe that both work equally for the family budget. Saplings are no less profitable than delicious berries and extend the season of agricultural business:

- The factor of constancy is interesting here, says Natalya Anatolyevna. - The season begins with berries, and seedlings end. It turns out a process that smoothly flows from one to another. This is important for our family, because from June, when the first berries of currants, gooseberries, summer raspberries appear, and until late autumn there is an opportunity to earn money.

But here gardeners are already starting from their own preferences. If some are more focused on getting more large high-quality berries, then they remove the excess growth, do normalization (thinning) of the plants. In this case, fewer seedlings will remain.

If the gardener focuses on both the berry and the seedlings, then more attention should be paid to the preservation of the growth in order to realize it in the fall.

How not to be deceived at fairs?

The Kartavtsevs sell most of their seedlings at regional fairs or at home. They have practically no time to travel to the markets every weekend. A lot of work in the garden.

Having participated in the fairs of Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and Kropotkin, they brought interesting observations, both positive and negative. From the negative, gardeners Kartavtsevs noted that a considerable number of seedling traders at fairs and markets simply earn money without thinking about the quality of the goods they sell. As a result, the purchased plants then do not correspond to the declared parameters - and the berry turns out to be the wrong one, and the yield. Sometimes it comes to outright deception when completely wrong plants are sold under the name of a certain variety.

- At the fairs we were outraged that some merchants simply deceive customers, want to make money in any way, says N.A. Kartavtseva. - For example, I look, the label of the new summer raspberry variety Cascade Delight is overlaid on the raspberry seedlings (we have successfully tested this variety at home, I call it raspberry for the lazy, it feels great in our conditions, it is fruitful, does not freeze in winter, does not require a garter), and under the picture is a description of the remontant variety of raspberries.

Or another example: they write on a seedling that it is Joan G's raspberry, and there are thorny branches in front of you. This means that there is an obvious deception of the buyer. And such things are at every turn. This is scary.

Therefore, I urge gardeners, do not take seedlings indiscriminately, guided only by advertising. Study well those varieties that you want to buy, know their parameters. All this information is now available on the Internet. You must understand what you are buying yourself to avoid the catch.

Sometimes it comes to jokes. We stood in Kropotkin at the fair. They come up and ask: "Do you have a raspberry that bears fruit 4 times a year?" Another fits: “I need a raspberry that bears fruit five times a year” ...

Is it like 5 times? This does not exist in nature. And I answer: "Well, not 25 times?" We just laughed at these words.

Apparently someone read somewhere, heard that there are two-time raspberries and such a fable went. Why not say that it bears fruit five times? Not realizing that these words are just stupidity.

Of course, there are gardeners who closely monitor the grade, do not deceive buyers. But how to distinguish them, if you do not know exactly.

We are struggling to find seedlings of new varieties, we pay a lot of money for them, we test them on our site, we check the parameters. Until we get the berries, we do not sell them. The plant must produce a berry. A person buys a plant for the sake of the harvest, and not for the sake of the tops.

There are positive impressions and emotions from participation in the fair. In Rostov-on-Don, we discovered that they like blackberries very much. We have heard before that they buy blackberries in the Kuban and take them to Rostov. There is the same demand for blackberry seedlings. Why there are such preferences, we do not know.

There are literate buyers with whom it is very interesting to talk, who have crossed the Internet, ask many questions about the characteristics of certain varieties. It is interesting to communicate with such people.

Already they are ordering to bring certain varieties to the fair next year. And I am glad that there are buyers who are interested and know what they will grow on their land. They select plants by varieties, ripening dates.

It's nice that there are a huge number of people who love the earth, love plants. Some are better at it, others are worse. Still others will learn from their mistakes.

At the fairs, my husband Boris and I are doing our best. We explain to people how to grow our plants, their features, we conduct a horticultural educational program. We try to ensure that a person has a complete understanding of the characteristics of the variety, of agricultural technology. Sometimes after a working day at the fair we go home and just keep quiet, because during the day we talked so much that our tongue hurts. But we know that a person, having received the necessary information from us, will come to us again.

In the Kuban we were at fairs in Krasnodar, Kropotkin and Sochi. What is the peculiarity of the Kuban fairs? We heard the opinion that in our Krasnodar Territory gardeners are the most active. In Rostov-on-Don we were constantly asked:

- Where are you from?

- From the Krasnodar Territory.

- But where are our Rostovites, what are they doing ?! Why are there people in the Krasnodar Territory who grow such crops, but we do not?

Buyers at the Kuban fairs are happy to purchase the whole range of horticultural crops, there are no special preferences, as in the Rostov region.

We had several varieties of summer raspberries as a hit of sales: Cascade Delight, Maria, Glen Fine, from remontants: Joan G and Zyugan, four varieties of dessert blackberries. All the seedlings were taken apart before the end of the fairs.

How to plant correctly?

The Kartavtsevs also told us about the rules for planting berry crops:

- Planting work is best done in the fall after September 20, since it is by this time that the young plants will be fully formed. We plant all of October and November, depending on the weather. You can follow the lunar calendar and plant plants during the waxing moon.

The selected raspberry seedling is trimmed. Only 25-40 cm of its trunk is left. In this case, you need to make sure that the plant has 1-2 leaves. Otherwise, with a long warm autumn, the axillary buds of the seedling may wake up, which will give shoots. The plant will not withstand such a load and will die.

But in order for raspberries and other berry crops to grow well and bear fruit, it is not enough just to plant them. The site of the future plantation must be carefully prepared. For this, humus and ash are introduced into the soil, since berry crops love manured soil filled with organic matter.

As humus, any well-rotted manure is used for at least 2-3 years, having a free-flowing consistency, as well as forest litter, consisting of rotted leaves and branches.

But the methods of introducing humus can be different. It is possible to bring it to the land plot by machines, scatter it over the soil and close it into the soil with a cultivator. You can dig a trench or pits for planting and add humus directly to them.

When planting, raspberry seedlings do not go deep into the soil.

It is important to keep the distance between the rows when planting. For raspberries, it should be at least 2 meters. Based on our experience, we advise gardeners to “don't be greedy”. Otherwise, over the years, the overgrown raspberries will simply intertwine with branches, and harvesting will become a real torment for you.

The formation of the row of raspberries itself can be different: ribbon or nest. With the belt method, frequent planting of seedlings in a row is allowed. With the growth of raspberries, the width of the row is maintained at a level of no more than 50 cm. Everything that grows outside this area simply falls out.

There is also a nesting method of planting, when seedlings are planted in a row at a distance of 60-70 cm from each other. In this case, the size of each raspberry bush is maintained separately to prevent them from growing together. This method is more time consuming.

Autumn pruning

One of the features of growing remontant raspberries is their autumn pruning. Since most varieties are grown for the second fruiting (not all raspberry varieties are capable of giving an equal harvest twice a year, both in June and in July-September), the branches of raspberries are completely cut out in late autumn before the first frosts.

- We heard from the weather forecast that autumn frosts are coming, - advises N.A. Kartavtseva, - take a trimmer or pruner and go to the raspberry-tree. All branches are cut to the very root.

The only exceptions are the totimer varieties, which yield two equivalent harvests per year, and summer raspberries, which yield a harvest on the branches of the second year.

The cut branches are burned, and the resulting ash, after cooling, is scattered on the raspberry beds as an excellent fertilizer.

There will be new items

Gardeners Kartavtsevs do not rest on their laurels, and continue to replenish their collection of berry crops. Now they are waiting for the arrival of new varieties of dessert blackberries, raspberries, remontant strawberries. There will even be rare new items from the Far East.

Now gardeners do not talk about them in detail. First, they will grow, test it on their site, receive berries, and then they will tell whether these plants are suitable for our climate, whether they correspond to reality.

Next summer the Kartavtsevs will look forward to trying new varieties of berries.
