How to grow tomatoes outdoors

In order for tomatoes to take root in the open field in the Moscow region, a number of rules must be observed. It is the complex of these activities that creates the conditions for the successful growth of tomatoes.

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

Choosing a place for planting tomatoes.

In this case, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors:

  1. It is necessary that the sun's rays constantly fall on the tomato bushes throughout the daylight hours. So the ripening of the fruits will accelerate, they will be soft and tasty.
  2. The preceding plants in the garden should be nightshades such as potatoes. Other precursor plants that have a beneficial effect on the growth of tomatoes are root crops (carrots, beets, turnips) and legumes (beans, peas, soybeans). You can plant tomatoes in the ground where corn used to grow. But if you decide to plant tomatoes in the same place for 2 years in a row, the result will be disappointing.
  3. Do not plant seedlings in soil where manure has just been poured.
  4. When choosing a site for planting tomatoes, avoid low-lying places where melt and rainwater can drain. Choose elevated beds.

Soil and its preparation

The soil for planting has been prepared since autumn. Leaf or cow humus is introduced into it. During this time, soil bacteria will decompose and release nutrients into the substrate.

Growing tomatoes in the open field should be carried out taking into account the acidity of the soil. The pH of the soil is determined at least approximately, since in an acidic environment tomatoes will not grow as needed, and they will also grow poorly.

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

Plants such as sorrel, horsetail and oxalis act as indicators of the substrate. They determine the presence of acidity in the soil. To reduce acidity, charcoal or chalk must be added to the soil, which must be well dug up with the soil and watered abundantly. This must be done at least 2 weeks before planting seedlings in open ground, and preferably in the fall.

When cultivating, remember that the soil also needs various fertilizers; they are also recommended to be applied in the autumn. These include:

  • phosphorus;
  • potassium;
  • superphosphate;
  • orthophosphate;
  • ammophos;
  • diammophos;
  • potassium sulfide;
  • potassium nitrate;
  • nitrogen.

There are fertilizers that are quickly washed out of the soil. They must be brought into the ground in early spring. This includes ammonium nitrate. But do not overdo it with fertilizers, as their excess affects the generative (flowering) shoots, reducing their number. This is especially true for nitrogen, which should be added in small portions.

Planting a tomato "in a collective farm"

It is better to plant tomatoes in a small area, a maximum of 0.5 hectares. This will be the most correct solution for this region.

The varieties are selected undersized determinant, bred specifically for the northern territories. The beds are pre-prepared; tomatoes are planted in 2 rows in a checkerboard pattern. The distance between the seedlings should be 40 cm.

You do not need to tie up tomatoes; the entire bed is covered with a layer of hay or straw. As the bushes grow, they lie on this litter, thereby being protected from the effects of temperatures and various insects.

Low-growing varieties do not need to be formed, but it is better to remove all stepchildren to the first flower cluster. The planting process requires minimal maintenance and is suitable for gardeners with little time to plant.

Soil preparation in the Moscow region for planting tomatoes

It is better to purchase soil for planting tomatoes in advance in the store. This is optional, but desirable. If you want to prepare the ground yourself, then you will need the following components:

  • peat;
  • humus;
  • sod soil.

All components are taken in equal amounts and mixed. Now you can transfer the soil to seedling pots and tamp. Do not take deep pots, their depth should be no more than 10 cm. Before planting seeds, water the soil abundantly. After that, a 5 mm depression is made in each pot.

To make it more convenient, you can take a box - in this case, the seeds are planted at a distance of 3 cm from each other. After the seeds have been placed in the holes, they can be covered with earth. The landing is complete, now spray the ground with water. A spray bottle is suitable for this. When planting seeds in boxes, remember that seeds of different varieties of tomatoes are not planted in 1 container.

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

After planting, it is worth covering the seed containers with foil. This will keep the ground moist for a long time. After that, the pots with seedlings are placed in a warm place so that shoots appear as soon as possible.

The room temperature must be constantly monitored. This is due to the fact that at night the temperature should not be lower than + 12 ° С, and during the day - not lower than + 20 ° С. It will depend on how soon the seedlings will appear.

The seeds will hatch faster if the air temperature is elevated. At a temperature of + 28 ° C, the first shoots will appear on the 4th-5th day. At an air temperature of + 23 ° C and below, it will take a week for seedlings. But you can use a backlight such as a fluorescent lamp.

Water the plants with warm rainwater; if not, then boiled will do.

While the plant is weak, use a spray bottle to avoid damaging the tomato seedlings. Add top dressing to the soil every 10 days. For example, humus diluted in water. Caring for tomatoes is a difficult task that requires a lot of work.

Planting tomatoes in open ground

Disembarkation in the Moscow region is carried out in mid-May. But this will depend on weather conditions. If you have already planted seedlings and at the same time the temperature has dropped, then it is more advisable to cover the plants with foil.

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

Before disembarking, the land is well dug up. In it, holes 30 cm wide are left. The distance between them is 50 cm. The distance between the rows is about the same or slightly less. It is advisable to add a weak solution of potassium permanganate to each well. When the seedlings reach a height of 35-40 cm, they can be planted in open ground.

The first watering after everything is planted is carried out after 1.5 weeks. This period can be shortened if the weather is dry all the time. Do not water the plants in cold weather. Otherwise, a fungal disease will develop.

If unfavorable weather lasts for a long time, it is necessary to think over the irrigation system. When watering, water should not get on the leaves and flowers of tomatoes. After flowering begins, fertilizer can be added to the soil. After the fruits ripen, watering will be frequent. It is better to do this in the evening with warm water. Do not wet the ground and bushes when the sun is at its zenith - this will only cause the soil to dry out, and a burn will appear on the leaves.

From time to time, the bushes spud. Tomato varieties intended for the Moscow region, due to their characteristics, are very demanding on proper care.

You can also lay mulch on the ground. This will keep moisture in the soil, and you won't be able to water the tomatoes as often. In addition, weed growth will be reduced. When you water the tomatoes, remove the mulch and then put it back. Use hay or straw for mulch.

Growing tomatoes in the Moscow region is difficult for beginners, but quite exciting. When the result of your work is appreciated, you will receive true satisfaction from your work. But caring for tomatoes intended for planting in the middle lane is not as easy as it seems, so please be patient beforehand.

Landing site features and preparation

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

Growing tomatoes outdoors is best done in pre-prepared areas.Particular attention should be paid to the selection of such a site.

  • The site should be in direct sunlight for most of the day. This will make the fruit sweet and ripen faster.
  • No nightshades or corn should have grown in front of the tomatoes. Tomatoes should also not be grown on the same plot for two years in a row.
  • Plots with fresh manure are also not recommended.
  • Tomatoes feel best in areas where carrots, turnips, legumes, cabbage or lettuce grew last year.
  • It is better to plant seedlings in elevated places.

The soil for growing tomatoes must be prepared in the fall. For this, leaves and humus should be laid out on the site, which by spring release all the necessary nutrients into the soil. Also, in the fall, potash and phosphorus fertilizers should be applied to the soil. Ammonium nitrate should be applied to the soil in the spring.

Transplanting

Planting tomatoes in open ground in the Moscow region is also possible with the help of seed. However, in this case, there is a risk of a low germination percentage. In addition, this increases the growth period, and some varieties of tomatoes do not have time to ripen at all. Therefore, in the Moscow region, it is recommended to plant tomatoes using seedlings.

It is best to use seedlings with a height of about 30 cm. Too large seedlings can break and require tying. You can plant seedlings at intervals of several days, taking into account the weather and varieties. This will ensure a gradual ripening of the crop.

It is best to plant seedlings in the morning. Manganese solution, charcoal and chalk are added to the wells. Pour in water, mix, and plant tomatoes. Then it is thoroughly watered.

Care features

how to grow tomatoes in the open field in the suburbs

In order to grow tomatoes in the open field in the Moscow region to bring the maximum yield, it is important to follow the rules of watering, hilling mulching and feeding.

It is better not to water the seedlings for the first days after planting. This can lead to a fungal infection. The only exception can be dry and very hot days. However, watering should be normalized. After rooting, the plant should be watered 1-2 times a week, depending on the variety and weather conditions. When watering, care must be taken to ensure that no water gets on the leaves and fruits. During the period of flowering and fruit set during watering, it is recommended to add mineral fertilizers to the water. It is better to water in the evening. The water should be at ambient temperature.

When grown outdoors, tomato bushes should be spud. This allows you to increase the flow of minerals from the soil and increase the root system. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out hilling during flowering and ripening of tomatoes.

It is also recommended to carry out the mulching procedure. This allows you to retain moisture, thus reducing the frequency of watering. Do not use coniferous bark as tomato mulch, which can lower the pH of the soil.

To increase yields, it is necessary to carry out the procedure for removing stepchildren and leaves. Thus, only the largest shoots are preserved, which increases fertility. The removal of stepchildren occurs when their size is about 5 cm. Most often it is recommended to leave no more than five trunks. However, it is recommended to leave only three trunks in the middle lane.

Do not forget about tying bushes. To avoid this, it is recommended to plant low-growing varieties of tomatoes. For tall varieties, you should use rods, fittings, trellises or agronomic netting for tying.

  1. Choose varieties carefully.
  2. Planting bushes is rare.
  3. Delete the maximum number of stepchildren.
  4. Treat bushes from late blight as often as possible, especially after rains.
  5. Starting from mid-August, feeding and watering plants must be significantly reduced.

The experience of growing tomatoes in the open field in the Moscow region is not great. But it also helps to get stable yields of full-fledged fruits. And they shoot them starting in mid-June.

In recent years some amateur vegetable growers from the Non-Black Earth Region are fond of expensive greenhouses that require significant maintenance. But not everyone can do it. But this simple agricultural technique can be available to everyone. Growing a good harvest in the open field with minimal labor, money and time is not a direct benefit!

Everyone starts with the selection of early maturing varieties. The Chippolino variety is especially good: fruitful, the whole bush is strewn with medium-sized, but tasty fruits. From 1 sq. m plantings receive up to 10 kg of early fruits.

It is advisable to use only your own seeds. Testes are selected from the best plants of a known variety. Before sowing, the seeds are pickled in a strong solution of potassium permanganate.

Sowing is done on February 20. Early sowing will also bring the timing of harvesting closer. When shoots appear, they regulate the air temperature for a week: during the day it is maintained at the level of 14-16 °, at night 10-12 °. After that, the temperature is raised to 20 ° during the day and up to 12-14 ° at night. The seedlings are transplanted first into a paper cup, and after 3-4 weeks - into a plastic bag, deepening the plants by 5-8 cm. This technique allows you to develop a good root system. In April, seedlings begin to harden. To do this, take it out to the balcony, first for 30 minutes, then increase the pause. Seedlings are hardened for 3 weeks: increases the plant's resistance to low temperatures.

The garden is being prepared in advance, and do it very carefully. The place is chosen sunny, and it must be protected from northerly winds. Protection - walls of houses, garages, utility blocks or fences. The bed is heated with biofuel (a layer of chopped straw). The insulated soil maintains the thermal regime of the plants. Before digging, 2 buckets of humus are introduced for each square meter of the garden. Then they dig a trench 70 cm wide and 30 cm deep, put straw in it, tamp it, and cover it with a layer of earth. Moisten all this with hot water with potassium permanganate and keep it covered for a week, until the seedlings are planted.

Seedlings with flower tassels are planted in a permanent place on May 10-15, depending on the weather. Plants are planted in two rows, so the plantings are better ventilated, and it is easier to care for them. Seedlings are planted obliquely. Warm soil and additional layers of roots help the tomatoes grow strong. In case of sudden cold snaps, a simple film shelter is prepared; after June 6, it is removed. Plants are watered only with warm water. The first feeding, confined to the period of ovary formation, is the Effect liquid complex fertilizer, the second is chicken droppings (1:30). They are fed at intervals of two weeks.

Behind the open ground it is necessary to follow and monitor, not forgetting about the prevention of diseases. Preventive treatment is carried out with a garlic solution: 1.5 cups of chopped garlic is infused for a day in 10 liters of warm water. Grains of potassium permanganate are added to this solution. Plants are treated at least 3 times with an interval of 10 days. The first treatment is timed to coincide with the appearance of the first ovaries on the first brush. Later, the plants are additionally treated with a solution of table salt: 1 kg of salt per 10 liters of water. The saline solution creates a thin film and prevents infection from reaching the leaves. The film lasts until the first rain.

For 1 sq. m are planted from 2 to 6 plants, depending on the variety and plant formation. Ultra early ripening varieties do not stepchild. These tomatoes are self-limiting in growth. In determinant varieties, stepchildren are removed.An attempt to grow tall varieties in the open field is considered interesting. To do this, form them in a stunted form. Cultivars with a large number of ovaries per cluster, form into one stem. The pinching is timed to the inception of the second flower brush. Another group of varieties - Unique, Amateur's Dream, Ogorodnik and the like - is formed into 3 stems. All 3 stems are pinched over the second flower cluster. At the same time, stepchildren are removed in a timely manner.

In the open field, with appropriate care, fruits are harvested no less than in closed.
