Belarus started growing potatoes on Sakhalin

Belarus has started growing potatoes on Sakhalin, about 40 hectares have already been planted. Vadim Makhanko, Deputy Director General for Research of the Republican Unitary Enterprise “Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Potato and Fruit and Vegetable Growing”, told Interfax about this.

“This year, after a 30-year break, we returned to Sakhalin Island. About 40 hectares are planted with Belarusian potato seeds, a good harvest is expected, ”Makhanko said at a press conference in Minsk.

According to him, equipment for post-harvest processing of Belarusian-made potatoes and vegetables was supplied to Sakhalin.

Makhanko also announced the preparation of two pilot projects for the establishment of orchards and berry plantations on Sakhalin. He noted that “in 25 years people have forgotten that huge apples once grew on Sakhalin”.

As the agronomist noted, in addition to apples in Russia and other CIS countries, Belarusian pears are in demand. According to Makhanko, he is pinning special hopes on the new variety “Prosto Maria”.

“If the“ Conference ”is the standard for pears all over the world, then I hope that this particular variety will become the standard for pears in the post-Soviet space,” he said.
