Powerful arrows, literally strewn with large flowers, similar to tropical butterflies. These are gladioli, varieties and photos with the names of which can be studied for a long time and carefully. But staying with a few plants for your own garden will still be very difficult! Anyone who has once grown such splendor on the site has already "got sick" with an amazing flower forever and will definitely find a case to replenish the living collection.
Gladiolus came to Russian gardens from Europe, where plants of this genus have been grown since the 16th century. Two hundred years ago, active breeding work began, giving the world modern hybrid varieties known as garden gladiolus.
Perennial plants familiar to many, propagating and renewing with the help of dense rounded-oval corms, bear little resemblance to their African and European ancestors. Over the course of several centuries, garden gladioli have acquired an incredible number of colors, their flowers have become much larger, the arrows are higher, and the flowering is longer.
One glance at the photo of gladiolus flowers is enough to recognize him as the real "king" of the flower bed. The selection started in the 19th century in the last century was not only continued, but also received a new, powerful impetus thanks to genetics. Therefore, in the middle of the century, a rather successful attempt was made to classify the available varieties, each of which today, in addition to the author's name, is assigned a complex alphanumeric code.
Scientists have calculated that fans of floriculture have at their disposal more than five thousand original varieties of gladiolus, whose photos and names amaze the imagination and delight the inexperienced viewer. However, the work of the botanists does not end. Old varieties are gradually being forgotten, giving way to brighter and more unexpected novelties.
The most and understandably popular are large-flowered hybrids or butterfly gladioli with flowers resembling huge exotic butterflies in shape.
Thanks to selection, such varieties bloom in the first half of summer and keep lush arrows until mid-autumn. Plant height can reach 1.3–1.8 meters, with 15–20, and sometimes up to 28, buds being formed on each inflorescence. The palette of large-flowered varieties is incredibly wide, which are conventionally divided not only by the shape of the flowers, but also by their predominant color.
Photos and names of varieties of white gladioli
White gladioli are incredibly fresh and spectacular, especially when they ate the size of flowers, like in the White Prosperity variety, reaches 15 cm, and the height of the inflorescence is close to a meter. Light-loving powerful plants of the gladiolus White Prosperity will decorate not only the garden, but also the room. Graceful white flowers with light lilac strokes on the petals in the depth of the funnel do not fade for a long time in the cut, and after the faded corollas new ones open higher along the stem.
Another white gladiolus Bangladesh in the depth of the corolla is painted in subtle shades of yellow-green. The height of the most beautiful plant reaches 80–11 cm, corollas with petals slightly corrugated along the edge exceed 12–14 cm in diameter. Like the previous variety, the gladiolus of Bangladesh can be used both for landscaping the site and for flower cutting.
As you can see in the photo, Ajax gladiolus flowers are decorated not only with a wavy border along the edge of the petals, but also with a bright scarlet spot on the lower part of the corolla.
The unusual gladiolus Green Star with flowers of a delicate greenish-yellow hue, thanks to its originality, duration of flowering and dense inflorescence, really claims to be a "star". The height of the arrow reaches 100 cm, the diameter of the Green Star gladiolus flower in full dissolution can exceed 15 cm.
Photo of gladioli with yellow and orange flowers

The similarity with celestial bodies is even greater thanks to the scarlet dusting along the edges of the almost even petals. Gladiolus flowers Princess Margaret, as in the photo, will illuminate the entire garden and decorate any room.
An incredible combination of white and sunny yellow shades gives the flower grower the gladiolus Buggy. The bright center of the rim, as if framed by a white corrugated border, creates a joyful mood and instantly attracts the eye.
The Olympic Flame gladiolus flowers are almost entirely colored in a juicy salmon or orange tone. Only in the center of the corolla is a warm yellow spot visible. Gladiolus Olympic Flame is a plant for sunny garden areas with fertile loose soil. Here, the height of the inflorescences can reach a meter, and more than 15 flowers are revealed on each arrow.
The large-flowered gladiolus Jester is a bright flash that illuminates the garden! Tall, up to one and a half meters, the plants form an inflorescence up to 80 cm long. Jester flowers that open in August have a yellow color, slightly corrugated petals and an unforgettable spotted spot in the center of the corolla.

Slender, majestic, elegant - all these epithets objectively characterize the wonderful garden flowers of gladioli. In addition to proud posture, they are distinguished by the sophistication of petal shapes, as well as an amazing combination and play of various shades. Thanks to the efforts of breeders, their choice is huge and will be able to satisfy the most demanding flower growers. Let's get acquainted with the types of gladioli and some of their varieties.
A little about gladioli
Gladiolus or skewer (Gladiolus), a representative of the Kasatikov family, got its names for the sword-like shape of the leaves.
The Latin word "gladus" is translated as "sword, sword". Long leaves (50-80 cm) at the bottom close around the stem, adding strength to it.
The flowering stem is straight, slender, high (from 50 cm to 2 m). The flowers are collected in spike-shaped inflorescences of various densities, which can be one-sided, two-sided or spiral. The height of such a blooming "spike" can reach 80 cm. A simple funnel-shaped perianth unites six petal-lobes, unequal in shape and size. After flowering, a tricuspid capsule fruit is formed with many rounded brown seeds.
Gladioli are corms perennial plants, their corms are round-flattened, covered with membranous scales, which are white, yellow of various shades, pink to dark cherry. Propagated both by seeds and by the growth of tubers and daughter bulbs.
Gladioli are widespread in the wild. These are the African tropics and subtropics, the southern half of Europe, Central Asia and even the western part of Siberia. In this regard, gladioli can grow in a variety of conditions. But the main ones are typical for most of them - sunny areas, sufficient moisture in the absence of stagnant water (the presence of good drainage), loose fertile soil.
Scientists have described about 200 species of gladioli. In floriculture, hybrid and dwarf varieties are significantly common, but some wild species are also used in decorative landscaping.
Wild gladioli
Some of the wild species are used in cultural floriculture.
Gladiolus marsh (Gladiolus palustris, G. Boucheanus, G.Pratensis) has a thin stem of 30-60 cm and small dark purple flowers (5-8 cm) with a "marigold" on the lower petals. This type is used to decorate ponds and rock gardens. Summer bloom, requires shelter for the winter.
Gladiolus byzantine (Gladiolus byzantinus, G. Elatus, G. Grandiflorus) can have a height of 45-60 cm, flowers are small up to 6 cm.The color of flowers is from purple to crimson with a white stripe on the main vein. On the lower petals there is a small “nail”. Form a loose one-sided inflorescence. Summer bloom. Used in perennial borders. A frost-resistant species, but in the northern regions it requires winter shelter.
Gladiolus Kochi (Gladiolus kotschyanus, G. Imbricatus var. Kotschyanus, G. Raddeanus) has a thin but strong stem 35-60 cm. Forms a twisted short inflorescence (up to 8 flowers). Spring bloom. Used in mixborders.
Gladiolus common (Gladiolus communis) has a straight and even stem 60-100 cm, small (about 4 cm) narrow-funnel-shaped flowers forming a dense ear. The color is purple-violet, the lower petals have a white stripe in the center. In relatively warm climates, it is grown outdoors in various flower beds. Blooming - the second half of spring.
Gladiolus seed (Gladiolus segetum, G. communis L. exparte, G. infestus, G. italicus, G. inarimensis, G. ludoviciae, G. caucasicus, G. Guipini). Its thin but strong stem grows up to 50-80 cm. Small (about 4 cm) bell-shaped flowers form a loose inflorescence (up to 10 flowers). The petals can be from light lilac to bright pink. This species is polymorphic, so in nature you can find specimens with yellow, white, red and blue-violet shades. Summer bloom. It hibernates well in the southern regions, in other regions it requires winter shelter. Used in mixborders.
Gladiolus tiled (Gladiolus imbricatus, G. Rossicus, G. Tenuis, G. Galiciensis, G. Neglectus) in nature has a height of 30-50 cm, and in favorable garden conditions can reach 80 cm.Forms a dense one-sided inflorescence, consisting of 3-14 pinkish -lilac small flowers (up to 4 cm). There are varieties that have white flowers with purple spots. Flowering - the first half of summer. The most winter hardy species. Used in mixborders.
Cultural views
Currently, scientists distinguish 6 hybrid species of cultural gladioli. Of which 4 species are combined into a group with winter-spring development (Colville, Harlem, dwarf, Tunbergen) and 2 species with summer development (hybrid, hybrid primrose).
Gladiolus Colville
Gladiolus Colville (Gladiolus colvillei) is a small-flowered hybrid with early flowering. The height of the stem is 75-90 cm, the leaves are 40-50 cm. The funnel-shaped flowers are medium-sized (about 5 cm), they can be pink, white, as well as rich crimson with white spots. Used for forcing in early spring.
Gladiolus Harlem (Gladiolus harlemensis) blooms outdoors earlier than other species, at the very beginning of summer. The height of the thin stem is 70-80 cm, which makes it very fragile. Small flowers form a graceful inflorescence. There are varieties with different colors.
Gladiolus dwarf (Gladiolus nanus) or gladiolus nanus is a Dutch hybrid. The height of the dense, but thin stem is about 35-40 cm. The flowers are medium in size from 6 to 10 cm, irregular in shape (the upper petals are noticeably wider than the lower ones). They form a loose inflorescence (up to 10 flowers). The color is dominated by light tones, and in the very center there is a dark diamond-shaped speck. Flowering occurs in mid-summer. This type is used for group planting and for cutting.
Popular varieties - soft pink with crimson spots on the lower petals Elvira, rich scarlet Naomi, pearl white Charlotte, bright crimson Alex, delight with crimson tints Tom, and Thomas has cheerful orange-red petals with yellow spots.
Gladiolus Tubergen (Gladiolus tubergenii) was created by the Dutch company Van Tubergen. The leaves of this species are rather narrow, and the thin stem reaches 75 cm. Flowers of medium size (up to 8 cm) form a loose inflorescence (up to 7 flowers). Used for forcing and cutting.
Gladiolus primrose hybrid (Gladiolus primulinus hybridus) grows up to 1 m, leaves are tough, flowers are medium in size (6-10 cm). The upper petals are always larger and wider, the lower ones are slightly bent back. The upper petal is hood-shaped, inclined. The inflorescence of medium size (up to 16 flowers) is loose, there are gaps between the flowers.
This species is not so common in decorative floriculture.
Gladiolus hybrid
Gladiolus hybrid (Gladiolus hybridus hort) - This species includes all summer flowering hybrid varieties. Plants of this species are quite tall, from 90 to 200 cm, have flowers of various sizes (from 5 to 20 cm). Their color is very diverse, the flower can combine several shades or have strokes and spots on the petals. The edges of the petals can be either smooth or wavy or corrugated. Flowers form large inflorescences (even more than 20 flowers).
Such hybrids adapt well to growing conditions, so they are grown in different climatic zones. But the gladiolus corms are dug up for the winter and stored in a cool room.
New interesting forms are gradually emerging - Butterfly Hybrids and Miniature Hybrids.
What does "gladiolus cipher" mean?
The North American Gladiolus Committee in 1973 introduced a new classification, which is still used today.
A wide variety of varieties of gladioli and their characteristics makes it convenient to use in their classification the so-called individual cipher, consisting of numbers and letters.
After the name of the variety, which according to the rules must be in English, there is a three-digit number - the variety code.
The first digit of this code indicates the size of the flower:
1 - miniature (up to 6.5 cm)
2 - small (6.6-9 cm)
3 - medium (9.1-11.5 cm)
4 - large (11.6-14 cm)
5 - giant (over 14.1 cm)
6 - circular
The second number defines the color group: 0 - white and green, 1 - yellow, 2 - orange, 3 - salmon, 4 - pink, 5 - red, 6 - crimson, 7 - purple and purple, 8 - lilac-blue and purple, 9 - brown and smoky.
The third number indicates the intensity of the color and the presence of complementary colors in the coloration. In monochrome gladioli, this number is always even. If there is an admixture of other colors, then depending on the saturation of the tone (pale, light, main, dark), one is added. The number “8” denotes a black tint, such as black-violet or black-raspberry, so it is not present in some colors.
After the code, through a hyphen, there are letters indicating the timing of flowering. In the domestic selection, they are designated by Russian letters, and in foreign ones - in Latin.
OR (VE) - very early (bloom 70-75 days after planting)
P (E) - early (flowering 75-80 days)
RS (EM) - early-middle (80-85 days)
С (M) - average (85-90 days)
SP (LM) - medium late (90-95 days)
P (L) - late (95-110 days)
OP (VL) - very late (more than 110 days after landing).
In different climatic conditions, the timing may differ.
Further, again with a hyphen, the last two digits of the year the variety was created and then the name of the breeder. At the very end, the shape of the petals is often indicated - G (corrugated), SG (strongly corrugated), SSG (super strong corrugated).
Popular varieties of hybrid gladioli
For growing in flower beds and for cutting, varieties of hybrid gladioli (Gladiolus hybridus hort) are most often used, since they are leading in decorativeness, endurance, and variety. All of them are summer-flowering, sun-loving and have low winter hardiness. We have selected large-flowered and giant specimens. For a more convenient acquaintance, we will group the varieties according to the main color and give a very brief description.
