People have mastered brewing, even before they started baking bread. Beer is an ancient drink that has not lost its popularity for about 8,000 years.

The beer market in Ukraine notes a slight drop in the level of consumption and production of beer in 2014-2015.

What was the reason for this? How have demand and production levels changed?

The beer market research conducted by the specialists of the KOLORO branding agency will tell about this and many other things.

Demand and consumption of beer in Ukraine

Most of the population of Ukraine, or rather 60.8%, consume beer, of which 76% are men and 24% are women.

In accordance with the age category of the population, the following tendency is observed: 71% of all beer consumed in Ukraine falls on consumers aged 21-29, the most modest segment of consumers remains the category of the population aged 50-59 - 6.5%.

The main consumer of beer in Ukraine remains segment of the population with high and upper middle income, residents of small and large cities.

In terms of the volume (capacity) of beer products, consumption was distributed as follows: the most popular volume remains 0.5 l - 50.4%, beer with a capacity of 1-2 l accounts for 30.1% of consumers, 0.33 - 16.7% l and for volumes over 2 liters - 2.8%.

Where do Ukrainians drink beer most often? The majority of consumers prefer to consume beer - at home (53.2%) or in public institutions - cafes, restaurants, bistros, etc. - 18.3%. In the hot period of time (spring-summer season), the level of beer consumption increases - on the street, on average up to 10%, but in other periods the consumption is 11.4%.

Beer market structure and main producers

The Ukrainian beer market numbers over 400 sorts and types of beer, 90% of which are produced by three large multi-brands AB InBev, Carlsberg Ukraine and Obolon. A significant market share is also occupied by: Alliance Efes and SABMiller, Alliance PPB and Oasis CIS.

In the structure of domestic production, 49% of products are produced in PET packaging, 35% in glass bottles, 12% in kegs and 4% in metal cans.

Consumer preferences by beer brands,% - Beer rating in Ukraine

The top three brands among brands were occupied by the following: Carlsberg (19.4%), Baltika (13.2%) and Lvovskoe (8.3%). This is followed by such brands as Tuborg (6.7%) and Velkopopovický Kozel (4.9%). Beer Zhigulevskoe (3.1%), Chernigovskoe (2.6%) and Obolon (2.6%) are at the bottom of the chain of leaders.

General trends of the beer market in Ukraine

In 2014, beer production in Ukraine has significantly reduced its volumes, by 9.3% (according to the organization "Ukrpivo"). Production facilities are only half loaded. In 2015, according to experts' forecasts, a further decrease in sales and production volumes should be expected, on average by 4-6%. First of all, this is due to a decrease in the purchasing power of the population, and also this is due to the country's macroeconomic indicators and the conflict in the east.

In general, the Ukrainian beer market is quite promising, today about 20 licensed beer brands, more than 400 varieties are produced here.

Features of the Ukrainian beer market:

1. In recent years (2012-2014), there has been a decline in the market share of large beer producers and a gradual increase in the production volumes of kart production.
2. The volume of beer consumption by the population of the country is decreasing due to the deterioration of welfare.
3. The level of consumption of beer brands presented in the mid-price segment is decreasing, and an increase in consumption is observed in the economy and premium segments.
4. Large beer producers are purposefully reorienting themselves to the production of premium products.
5. The high level of competition with brands of stronger alcohol remains as before.
6. Stability remains only on the non-alcoholic beer market, over the past few years the production and consumption volumes have not changed here and amount to about 5 million decaliters. annually.

Export of Ukrainian beer carried out in 42 foreign countries. At the end of 2014, Ukraine reduced the export of beer by 45.5%, in addition, imports also decreased - by 10.1% (according to the organization "Ukrpivo"). Ukrainian beer is mainly exported to Russia and the CIS countries. The main importers of beer to Ukraine are:Russia, Belgium, Germany and Czech Republic.

Summary

The Ukrainian beer market is very promising, however, lately the production volumes and the level of sales on the market are noticeably decreasing. First of all, this is due to the deterioration of the economic situation in the country and the general well-being of the population, which is associated with a decrease in purchasing power.
