We managed to communicate with an amazing person who has been growing this most delicious and romantic berry for 11 years - Roman Dokukin. A modest farmer frankly shared his vision of some famous strawberry varieties and gave a couple of practical tips. And who, if not a farmer with many years of practical experience, can give the most valuable advice!
It is always interesting to trace the fate of a professional farmer who initially chose a profession that is not related to gardening. So, Roman is a physician and economist by profession, was engaged in a successful business in the field of auto accessories, but at the same time dreamed of his own garden and a house in the village. Everything came true, a house and a garden appeared, and so, step by step, friends suggested trying to grow three varieties of strawberries for the first time in their life: Marmalade, Honey, Clery. And it so happened that in the first year, a 20-ton crop was harvested from 1.5 hectares of plantings.
We asked Roman questions about the best varieties of strawberries for summer residents, and also asked him to name our “favorites” among these varieties. And this is what came of it….
“For us industrialists, what is important about a strawberry variety is how resistant it is to tick infestation. If I see that a variety is highly susceptible to infection with this pest, then I will simply throw it out and not bother. For example, as happened with the strawberry variety Rosana Kievskaya. Although I successfully fight this pest with the Vertimec insecticide. When processing a bush, by the way, you need to get the solution under the reverse side of the leaf, since the mite basically hides there. And for diseases, black spot, I use the fungicide Luna and Falcon, if anyone is interested.
For us, industrialists, in a strawberry variety, it is important how resistant it is to tick infestation.
Here's a simple tip for beginners looking to make commercial strawberries. Better to buy seedlings of medium and late ripening. Because the difference in ripening of an early strawberry variety between us and the southern region, Kherson and Odessa, is exactly 10 days. But just to get an early berry, I have to make a lot of effort, use agrofibre, make tunnels. And the southern region will not do anything like that, and as a result, it will receive berries in the same period. We can never compete with them for early strawberries.
Today I have tried to grow 70–80 different varieties of strawberries and I consider the Italian variety Murano my favorite.
Reference: Murano strawberry is a remontant variety that has several fruiting waves from June to October. The berries are large, sweet, with dense pulp, weighing 25–35 g, the declared yield is up to 1 kg per bush. The fruits are very beautiful, regular conical shape. Low-leafed bush.A good transportable variety, during the tests it has proven its suitability for growing in harsh continental climates. Frost and heat resistant, disease resistant, also tolerates low light conditions.
Of the neutral varieties, I have never met Murano better. First of all, I like beautiful berries and high yields. The only drawback of the variety is that it gives few antennae and reproduces poorly. I would recommend it more as an industrial variety than for summer cottage cultivation.
Albion, the well-known berry, is also a good industrial variety, but not very tasty for summer residents. Although he has a large, powerful bush, good disease resistance, high yield.
Summer residents may be interested in strawberry varieties with a completely different set of qualities. Of course, these should be, first of all, disease-resistant varieties. And if you give a general description, I can say that American-bred strawberry varieties are all like "sweet cucumber", that is, sweet and crunchy. The taste is incomplete. Again, they are strongly affected by the tick, and are unstable to diseases and weather conditions.
Italian varieties are good, but mostly industrial. However, you can try to pay attention to the following varieties.
Irma - an interesting fruitful variety. The berry is very beautiful, elongated and tasty, but God forbid it to get caught in the rain! It will rot. And here is the grade Malga - a novelty in Italy, like the Irma variety, only improved and resistant to rain. But, unfortunately, it will not reach Ukraine in any way.
Linos - remontant resistant variety, suitable for both industrial and suburban cultivation. The first fruiting is 10 days later than the early one, and the second harvest occurs in mid-summer and lasts until autumn. Productivity up to 9000 g per bush.
The berries are large, from 25 to 40 g, egg-shaped, sweet and aromatic. I personally do not quite like the light, carrot-like color of its berries.
Roxanne - medium late strawberry variety. Both beautiful and marketable, the yield is 900 g per bush, the berry is first with sourness, and then it gains taste. Berry picking has been going on for three weeks.
Asia. An early variety, very sweet and beautiful with sophisticated, conical berries. The aroma is similar to strawberry. Transportability is sufficient, stable.

Darselect. A mid-early strawberry variety, bears fruit in early June, quite fruitful - up to 900 g per bush. The berries are medium in size, 18–25 g, harmonious in taste, sweet and sour with a strawberry aroma.
Charlotte. A remontant variety, more suitable for a private garden. Berries are valued for their dessert taste with a nutmeg aroma of strawberries. The berries are round in shape, 14–16 g. The variety is resistant to late blight, powdery mildew.
Daisy. Good early-medium strawberry variety. The berries are large - 40 g, the yield from a bush is up to 600 g. Juicy to taste, with a strawberry aroma, they tolerate transportation very well.
New products:
M-100. Repaired grade with excellent characteristics. Berries are medium and large in size, weighing on average 15–20 g. In shape, the berry is wide-conical, shiny, scarlet in color. The palatability is very high, the pulp is dense, but juicy, sweet with a rich aroma. The advantage of the variety is excellent transportability, high stable yields throughout the season, and disease resistance.
Magnum. An early pineapple strawberry variety. It has a high yield, can be stored for a long time and is well transported. Berries weighing 20-25 g, bright red. The pulp is firm, very sweet, juicy.Strawberries produce a strong, stocky bush with evenly spaced fruits high above the ground to keep the berries clean after rain. Resistant to the most common diseases in strawberries.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed in Ukrainian varieties. Tried a lot, but not to compare with the Italians. By the way, in the strawberry world, Japanese selection is considered the standard. For example, the Chamora Turusi variety known to us.
Reference: Strawberry Chamora turusi is a large-fruited variety of late ripening. A variety of Japanese selection. The yield is high and can reach 3 kg per bush. High transportability. The berries are beautiful, dark red, very large, up to 100 g. The pulp is juicy, tasty, aromatic. Berries for universal use, suitable for consumption both fresh and for harvesting. The bushes are very powerful and grow quickly. The leaves are light green, not hard, very large, the peduncles are tall. Disease resistance is good. To obtain the maximum yield, it is recommended to lightly plant 60 × 60 seedlings and intensive watering during the ripening period of the berries.
But this Chamoru Turusi brought to us twenty years ago, and I'm afraid that she has lost its original varietal qualities. The fact is that queen cells need to be updated every few years. For example, we take strawberries from nurseries where this or that variety was invented.
I will also advise summer residents some varieties of English selection.
Florence. Late-ripening strawberry variety. The berries weigh 35 g, are universal in use, suitable for processing and for fresh consumption. It tolerates our weather conditions well. Does not lose its qualities up to 5 years. The variety is insensitive to root diseases and powdery mildew. Long fruiting period, almost a month. Gives a lot of mustache.
Weibrant. The benchmark for early British strawberries. Very high yield - up to 1000 g per bush, the berries are large, beautiful and tasty.
Of the early varieties, I also like Rumba. The only negative is that the leaves wither in the heat, but I need the bush to be, like a berry, beautiful, like Alba's.
But among the early varieties, I praise the novelty most of all.Fleur Dutch selection, before which no one gives a crop. Despite the fact that although strawberries appear at the end of May, they are delicious. After all, it is known that all early berries do not shine with taste. For example, have you tried early cherries?
Of the late varieties, I recommend Malvina. Later, there is nothing of it, it bears fruit in July. And the berry itself is very tasty, dessert, medium-sized at first, and then maybe larger. Gives color to dark scarlet and has a richer taste. Harvest from a bush up to 800 g.
You have to experiment and test the varieties in practice all the time. Very often you are disappointed. Would you like to hear from me the name of the ideal strawberry variety? This does not happen, it does not exist! Otherwise, I would have thrown out all my varieties and started growing only one - the perfect one.
