Correct planting and caring for Kalina buldenezh

Kalina Buldenezh is grown in summer cottages by gardeners, and designers are used to decorate plots. The ornamental variety Snowball was bred by a Frenchman named Lemoine four centuries ago.... The beauty came to Russia at the behest of the reigning Catherine II. At first, the bushes of the plant could be seen in the greenhouses and parks of the imperial family. Later, the nobility began to plant their gardens with viburnum. They looked unique. The branches seemed to be covered with balls of snow. A description of this ornamental plant is given below.

The "snow globe" is a variety of the common viburnum that takes its place in the honeysuckle family. Its height can be almost 3.5 m, diameter one and a half.

What does the plant look like, description of the species

The shrub has highly branched branches. Gardeners, pruning them, give the plant a semicircle shape... From this, the blossoming buds become even more beautiful and tender. Inflorescences in the form of a ball and on a dwarf tree look great.

The leaves of such a garden viburnum are large and bright, jagged, and the veins create an interesting pattern. All shoots are covered with them. Looking at the plant, it seems that it is standing in a festive green outfit.

Ball-shaped inflorescences form on young branches. The diameter of each is 15 cm... Several petals emerge from one bud. There are no stamens in them. Therefore, the plant does not bear fruit.

By winter, the leaves fall off, but the viburnum looks impressive even without them, since the relief is created artificially.

Blooming buds have a light green hue, then they become creamy and pinkish. Having opened, they become a snow-white lump. Due to the huge number of inflorescences, the shoots tilt down. Such beauty can be observed for more than a month - until 35 daysblooms in May or June.

Now, the plants that are grown in the Moscow region grow to more than 6 meters in height and live for more than 5 decades.

Choosing a seat for landing

For single bushes, you can find a place on a well-groomed green lawn. They look great near the gazebo, pond, bench.

Viburnum will surprise with its color in group plantings. The elegance of the plant will be given by the neighborhood with other cultures - barberry, spirea, forming darker foliage below.

The snow globe will not disappear in poor soil, in an area where there is little light, but the inflorescences will be small and in small quantities. In order for the bushes or trees to delight with exquisite snow-white buds, they find a more humid place with soil acidity not exceeding 6.5. Better to plant near a lake, fountain or well. It is good to do this both in spring and autumn.

A hole is being dug in the fertile land 40x40, in the poor - up to 60... They lay peat, 30 grams of nitrogen and potassium, up to 50 phosphorus, deepening the plant up to 5 cm.

When planted in the spring, they are cut to a third of the length, in the fall a year later.

Bushes are placed on 1.5-2 m one from the other... It must be borne in mind that the root collar is 3 centimeters below the soil surface. The ground under the viburnum is well moistened and covered with rotted foliage or peat.

The plant will amaze with elegance, lush flowering, only if you take care of it diligently and with love. And leaving consists:

• in dressing different fertilizers;
• in regular loosening;
• in rejuvenation branches;
• protection from disease and pests;
• in normal watering;
• in crown formation.

Top dressing in spring and autumn

Bushes or trees are fed before the buds swell and before the foliage begins to drop. Phosphorus and potassium are taken as an autumn fertilizer. 30-40 g per square meter and grams 50 nitrogen... In autumn, only the first substance is needed, and the dose used should be 2 times less.     

Pruning

The seedlings need to form a crown in a year or two. Then the bushes will be neat and lush. For this, no more than four pairs of kidneys are left, which are located at the base. This is done until the desired type of plant is obtained. The viburnum that blooms poorly is cut at the root, leaving the stem at a level of up to 30 cm.

Per 2 years a shoot appears with a stem height of about a meter... It is left as the trunk of the plant, and the rest are pruned.

Plant pests

Kalina Buldenezh is not afraid of frost. If the ends of the branches freeze, which is no more 12 cmthey are simply cut off... On flowering, this is not displayed in any way. Bushes and trees should be sheltered only in the northern regions of the middle latitudes. They wrap only forked, laurel, black, evergreen. In this way, they are protected from freezing. But mostly these varieties are grown in the south.

Some summer residents have a question why this exquisite plant does not decorate so many areas.

In late spring, insects settle in the leaves of the viburnum... The aphid that appears contributes to their twisting, the beetles gnaw the plates, leaving only veins. This will not happen if pests are detected in time and begin to fight them.

Sometimes one treatment is not able to cope with insects. Then spray the bushes again. For this purpose, a sprayer with a long boom is better suited.

In some botanical parks to avoid the use of chemicals special plant species are planted to maintain natural balance and attract entomophages - insects that destroy parasites.

To exterminate the bark beetle Chlorophos 0.2% is purchased at dachas. To get rid of the comma scale, which loves to settle in the trunk and branches of the viburnum, spraying is carried out using karbofos. A 0.1% solution can be found on the market for this purpose.

The leaves are often observed the occurrence of powdery mildew or spotting... To prevent this from happening, the plant is repeatedly processed with infusions that are prepared from onions, tobacco or garlic. 

Reproduction methods

There are several ways to propagate the viburnum Buldenezh.

Seeds

For seed propagation stratification of planting material is required within six months - seven months... It will not germinate until August.

Initially, the root is strengthened, but the kidney does not develop. The release of cotyledons should be expected by the spring.... Then the covers will be thrown off. Cover with leaves or peat by winter.

The seeds will germinate faster if kept changing the temperature. They must first be warm when 18-20C, then for three months they are placed in a cold place. By resorting to reproduction in this way, seedlings can be expected in one year. And only by the third, the viburnum will begin to develop rapidly. And it will bloom after five.

For breeding ornamental plant species, the vegetative propagation method is more suitable.since it is almost impossible to obtain seeds.

Layers

They do this with layering from the bush.:

• near the plant I form a hole up to 15 cm deep;
• the lower shoot is disconnected, bending, pinned;
• the earth or peat sprinkled on top is compacted;
• the soil is constantly moistened.

If this is done in the spring, the shoots should take root before winter. And only through 2 years they are put away, separating from the bush to another place.

This method is suitable if viburnum is already growing in the country.

Reproduction is carried out using cuttings that have one internode. Prepare them in June, cutting off the bushes. The shoots have a length of up to 1 cm... Placed in humus. Store in a greenhouse, covered with a film, which is removed only for watering. In such a humid environment, the cuttings remain until spring. For growing, a special school bed is made. When the bushes take root, you can start transplanting to a permanent place in the ground.

There is another way of propagation of decorative viburnum, when seedlings with roots are used.... It must be borne in mind that the crown of a tree or bush has a considerable width. The distance between them is set at the level of 2 m. The neck of the root is deepened by 5 centimeters. Having compacted the earth, it is watered well. 

Varieties of decorative viburnum

A plant with a standard shape looks quite interesting. The crown is formed around the shoot at a height of at least one and a half meters, leaving branches in 30 cm... It is thinned out after 7 years, and only the shoots at the bottom of the tree are cut off.

In the south of Russia laurel viburnum is grown as borders and hedges... On the slopes of the mountains you can see forked thickets. The tasty black fruit has a gordovina, which is found in deciduous forests.

Buldenezh has the most beautiful inflorescences.... She takes root even in Siberia. You can admire the snow-white buds of a plant only by creating suitable conditions.
