There are various ways to grow potatoes. The main thing is to choose for yourself the planting method that will correspond to a certain growing region and will be convenient for the gardener. After all, if the chosen method is well chosen, it is quite possible to collect 700 kg. from one suburban weave.
Whichever method is chosen, the main thing is to correctly follow all the rules recommended for disembarkation by a certain method. It has also been known for a long time that increased yields always depended on a well-chosen method planting potatoes.
Traditional shovel
For this method, the soil for planting potatoes must be prepared in the fall. The site is dug manually onto a shovel bayonet and nitrogen fertilizers are applied. You can use rotted manure, ash and urea.
Planted at the time of bud dissolution on a birch... This will mean that the earth has warmed up enough so as not to destroy the culture. You can plant the beds directly by eye by digging holes, or you can use twine and pegs to make the markings and then the rows will be even.
Rows are dug at a distance of 70 cm from each other. Tubers for planting choose a small size 4 cm in diameter and they must be healthy. Before planting, the planting material should germinate within two weeks.
It is convenient to plant using the method for two people - one digs holes no more than 10 cm deep, and the other puts the potatoes in the holes with sprouts up. Put compost on top and not a lot of ash.
When digging the next hole, the soil is thrown onto the hole dug out before. The step between the tubers is 30 cm.
After that, how young sprouts will appear and before flowering, hilling must be carried out twice to increase the yield. Do not forget about watering and fertilizing with manure and mineral fertilizers.
How to plant in ridges
The method is also called Dutch technology.
Further care is traditional, only soil for hilling is taken in the aisles and therefore the root system of the bush is not injured.
Two weeks before digging potatoes need to mow the tops.
Into the furrows
A furrow 20 cm wide and 15 cm deep is dug out. The tubers are laid in it with a step of 30 cm and lightly sprinkled with earth. As the tops grow, the earth is poured until a mound grows above the ground.
When filling up the earth from above, use also humus and ash.
Under count
Wells done with a special stake... For such a planting, it is good to have two people - one goes and makes markings with a stake, and the second plants potatoes behind him, at the same time covering it with earth.
Prepare the soil in advance in the fall by digging up and adding nitrogen fertilizers.
Meatlider method
Taking an American scientist doubles the yield. So, they dig beds up to half a meter wide and with a step between the beds of 100 cm. The beds are dug without touching the soil in the aisle.
Garden beds are marked on an ongoing basis and they are not transferred to a new place for the next year.So that the water does not spread in different directions during irrigation, they make sides from the ground or boards. There is one feature, on such a bed, the tubers are placed in two rows, but in a checkerboard pattern, marking a 25 cm step between the holes.
The beds for the method are made for a long period.
Unusual Chinese way
With this method, a pit for potatoes is dug in the autumn, measuring a meter by a meter. At the bottom of the pit organize a compost heapby adding some wood ash. In the spring, a large potato tuber is placed in such a hole, the weight of which is at least 200 grams.
Previously, a transverse incision is made on it, which will stimulate a large number of shoots. After the tuber is germinated for 2 weeks. After planting the potatoes in the center of the pit, they are covered with a 25 cm layer of fertile soil.
After the first shoots appear, they are treated with potash fertilizers and covered with earth. There are up to 3 such layers.
This method uses a lot of fertilizers and this does not increase the quality, but only the number of tubers harvested from one bush.
Square-nest option
Or it is also called the Gülich method. For this method, the entire plot of land intended for planting potatoes is divided into squares with a side of a meter. In the center of each square, a circle of humus with a diameter of 25 cm is laid out, and potatoes are placed in the center of this circle, sprouts down.
In dry times such plantings need watering.
Into the barrel
A mixture of earth and compost is placed on the bottom of a barrel or bag. Then put potatoes and lightly sprinkle with the same mixture. As soon as their sprouts appear, they are again sprinkled with a mixture of earth and compost and so on up to 70 cm in height.
This method is ideal if there is little land on the site or most of it is covered with asphalt. Then such barrels can be placed around the perimeter of the yard.
It is necessary that the walls of the barrel contain air penetration holes to the root system of the potato.
Ridge landing type
This planting method is used when on the land selected for potatoes, the groundwater is located very close to the soil surface. The most convenient way to make ridges is with a walk-behind tractor. The combs are made at a distance of 70 cm from each other and at least 15 cm high.
Further traditional care:
- Watering;
- Loosening;
- Hilling;
- Fertilizer.
This method has a number of advantages - a reduction in manual labor, with constantly damp soil, the potatoes dry out faster, and therefore there is no rotten potatoes.
This method is only suitable for moist soil with stagnant moisture.
We sit in the trenches
In the middle of autumn they dig trenches 30 cm deep and 70 cm increments... A layer of hay up to 15 cm high is laid along the entire length of the trench and lightly sprinkled with a mixture of manure and ash.
By spring, this layer will be compacted to 5 cm and potatoes are spread on it with a step of 30 cm. If you plant early, then such plantings are covered with agrofibre or other insulation available on the farm. Further planting care consists of the usual actions.
The method is great for sandy soils.
Under the black film
The place reserved for planting potatoes is well fertilized and covered with black film. Instead of digging holes with a step of 30 cm, holes are made in the film, and potatoes are already planted in them.
This method has its merits:
- No need to weed;
- No need to huddle;
- Watering is decreasing, as the soil dries out more slowly under the film.
Smooth fit
This is the same method as under a shovel, but so that the rows of potatoes are even, markings are made on the field with twine and pegs. The potatoes are laid out and earth is poured on top.
In boxes
This method boils down to the fact that it is necessary to build boxes up to 25 cm in height, while the width will be 100 cm. Make the length of the box arbitraryuyu, what a bed set aside for planting potatoes is capable of.
The passage between such beds is left about 70 cm, at first these boxes are filled with earth from a compost heap mixed with rotted manure, and already on this mixture the tubers are laid out in a double row in a checkerboard pattern with a step of 30 cm.
Hilling with this method of planting is not necessary. After harvesting the boxes are sown with any green manure.

General points
Whichever method is chosen, you need to be sure that what will the tubers get:
- Warmly;
- Air access to the root system;
- Watering once a week during flowering;
- Fertilizers.
How potatoes are sown
Sowing potatoes with seeds is not used, as it is a troublesome business. But if there is a desire, then after flowering seeds appear, resembling small black tomatoes.
They are collected and store until spring, and in the spring they are planted on a prepared small bed. Under good conditions, by the end of the season, potato planting material grows from the seeds.
What does potato planting look like?
For this purpose, planting material is selected no larger than a matchbox and pulled out of the basement 21 days before landing in open ground. This time is needed for the potatoes set aside for planting to sprout.
Then use any method that is described in this article.
Which varieties are suitable for planting potatoes
Each gardener chooses the variety that suits him best.
Important factors to be guided by when choosing a variety:
- Productivity;
- Keeping quality in winter;
- Taste qualities.
This is selected empirically, relying on their taste and personal storage conditions for potatoes until spring.
Tips on how to quickly plant potatoes
You can plant potatoes quickly, if two or three people work in the garden and in the usual traditional way under a shovel. But having previously dug up all the earth with a walk-behind tractor, which will greatly facilitate planting potatoes.
How to make beds

The main thing is to choose the one convenient and not time consuming, which will suit a certain gardener. Some people use two methods of planting potatoes in their area to increase their yield.
