Brugmansia planting and care at home in the open field

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldThe genus Brugmansia belongs to the Solanaceae family. The plant is a shrub with unusually fragrant large and beautiful flowers.

Previously, it was referred to as a Datura species, but now plants whose flowers look down are classified as brugmansia, and plants whose flowers look up are classified as Datura.

The tree plant has attractive flowers that give off an incredibly pleasant aroma.

Homeland is the territory of the tropics and subtropics of America. Let's take a closer look at what this flower is and what care should be taken at home for it.

The most popular types for planting

The most common types for planting brugmansia are as follows:

  • brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldFragrant or aromatic... This species is a tree-like plant, which can reach a height of 5 m. The homeland of this species is Brazil. The leaves of the plant are pale green, fragrant. Brugmansia flowers reach 15 cm in length and grow up to 30 cm in diameter. Indoors, the plant can bloom almost all year round.
  • Golden... This species is distinguished by the presence of white or apricot flowers, as well as large leaves, which can be up to 50 cm long. At sunset, these plants give off a very pleasant aroma.
  • Snow white... This species is very often called arboreal brugmansia, white dope or white angel trumpets. Plants can reach a height of 3 m. The length of flowers reaches 25 cm. Flowers are usually white. In culture, this species is rare, mainly its hybrids are grown.
  • Bloody... Popularly, this type is often called the scarlet trumpets of the angel. The plant has very bright flowers that can be not only red, but yellow or orange. Their length ranges from 20 to 25 cm. The aroma of the flowers is very pleasant, not suffocating. It is also worth noting that this species is the most frost-resistant among all brugmansia.
  • Multicolored... This plant is a shrub with a height of 2 to 4 m. Large flowers form 30 to 50 cm in length on the bush. As a rule, the flowers are white, so this species is often confused with tree brugmansia. However, the older the plants become, the more pronounced the shade of flowers changes to apricot or peach. With the arrival of evening, the flowers emit a pleasant aroma.

Cultivation of brugmansia, home care

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldThis shrub is pretty heat-loving plant, therefore, in the open field, brugmansia is grown only in warm regions. To grow brugmansia in a cold region, a container is needed so that it can be brought into a warm room for the winter.... Growing this plant also requires good lighting and no wind.... At the same time, brugmansia tolerates summer fluctuations in air temperature throughout the day quite easily.

The branches of the plant are very fragile, therefore, during the flowering period, additional support must be provided for them.

Growing brugmansia also means providing the plant with a rich and nutritious soil. If you decide to use peat soil for planting in open ground, then it is imperative to add clay soil to it. Watering should be done on a daily basis, as the plant's strong root system, fleshy large stems and many leaves need sufficient moisture.

It is also worth paying attention to the fact that the leaves of the bush evaporate moisture from the entire surface, therefore, if the air humidity is less than 55%, the leaves need additional spraying. It is recommended to water brugmansia a couple of times a month with a solution of complex mineral fertilizers with a small addition of ash, and during the flowering period it is necessary to increase the dose of potassium and phosphorus.

Shrub pruning at home

Growing brugmansia also means pruning regularly. Pruning should be done according to the following rules:

  • brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldIt is necessary to cut brugmansia in early spring, before the new growth of the plant begins;
  • At the same time, the shrub does not need to be heavily pruned, as this can interfere with the abundant flowering of brugmansia. The branches after pruning can be used as propagation cuttings. During pruning, it is necessary to remove damaged, diseased branches, as well as branches that thicken the crown. The remaining branches are shortened by only one third during pruning;
  • You should also leave Y-shaped branches during pruning. If you leave straight branches, without branching, then the shrub will grow, and the flowers will not form at the same time;
  • The first pruning of brugmansia must be carried out the next year after the beginning of flowering;
  • During this procedure, it must also be borne in mind that the majority of flowers are formed on the lateral branches that grow almost horizontally.

Reproduction of brugmansia at home

The brugmansia shrub can be propagated in three ways:

  • Seeds;
  • Cuttings;
  • Layers.

Let's talk in more detail about each of the brugmansia breeding methods.

Propagation by cuttings

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldThis breeding method is recommended for use in the spring, since it is in the spring that brugmansia is actively growing, and the cuttings root well.

For grafting, you must choose a healthy cutting with at least one node. After that, all large leaves are removed from the cutting, or cut in half, so that the cutting directs all its forces to form new roots. At the same time, the end of the cutting is lowered into a growth stimulator, after which it is placed in water, which must be changed periodically. After a maximum of two weeks, new roots begin to appear on the cuttings. After that, cuttings with growing roots must be placed in a substrate consisting of peat, perlite, and so on.

If you notice that the cuttings do not form roots and begin to rot, then it is necessary to cut off the decaying part of the cutting, and place it directly into the substrate. Good results can be achieved by rooting cuttings in clean perlite. The grafting substrate should not be wet, but damp. The pot with the handle must be placed in the greenhouse, and it is recommended to put a plastic bag on top of it. The best place is partial shade. When you notice that the roots have begun to strengthen, the plants must be taught to the sun, and the bag can be removed. You can transplant a young plant to a permanent place only a month after rooting.

Reproduction by layering

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldIf you want to get short, ready-to-bloom plants, then for reproduction it is recommended to use layering.

To do this, you need to choose last year's shoots in spring or June, the diameter of which is about 2 cm at the top of the crown.A transverse Y-shaped incision must be made on the shoots, the depth of which will be approximately one fourth of the thickness of the shoot. The incision must be powdered with a rooting stimulator, and after that it is wrapped in wet sphagnum moss. From above, the incision is wrapped in a plastic bag, which is secured with elastic bands. It is recommended to maintain the sphagnum humidity with a syringe filled with water. The first roots on the shoots will appear after 1-2 months.

After that, the shoot must be cut off, freeing it from large leaves and inflorescences. Next, the winding is removed and the moss is carefully removed without damaging the roots. An escape is planted in shaded places. While the new plant is gaining strength, the shoot must be constantly sprayed.

Seed propagation

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldBefore sowing brugmansia, the seeds must be soaked in a growth stimulant solution for a couple of days. After that, the seeds are buried in light soil by a maximum of 1 cm. The crops are moistened, and the soil is heated with a plastic bag, the container with seedlings must be placed in a bright room. Typically, the first shoots appear within 3 weeks after sowing. Seedlings must be sprayed with warm water a couple of times a day.

When the fifth true leaf appears on the plants, it can be transplanted into a separate container. When the root system of young plants is wrapped in an earthy clod, they can be planted in a permanent place in open ground. From the second month of life, young brugmans must be fertilized with nitrogen, and after another four months, it is necessary to switch to complex fertilizers. The first flowering when propagated by seeds occurs, as a rule, in the second or third year.

Winter care for brugmansia

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldIf you live in a region in which the air temperature drops below 5 degrees above zero in winter, it is recommended to transfer brugmansia to a warm room for the winter, since the shrub is not intended for growing in the middle lane.

An apartment, a veranda or a greenhouse can be used as such a room. Watering brugmansia in winter is less intense than in the main season. If there is very dry air in the room, then the shrub must be sprayed. In addition, the room must be regularly ventilated. It should be noted that brugmansia does not bloom in winter. The higher the air temperature in the room, the more intense the lighting should be.

In winter, these shrubs can partially shed their leaves. If the temperature in the room drops to 12 degrees, then the plants can go into a state of dormancy, and a lot of light is not required. At the end of the winter period, when the buds on the plant begin to swell, it must be transferred to a lighter room, as this may affect its further flowering.

> Potential pests and diseases

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldIf the buds of the shrub begin to fall off, the shoots stretch out, the color of the leaves fades, then this indicates that the plant needs additional lighting. In addition, the buds of a plant may fall off due to a sharp change in conditions of detention or with excessive or insufficient moisture.

If the age is more than 3 years, and it has never bloomed yet, it is possible that there is a large amount of nitrogen in the dressings and fertilizers, which, as a rule, leads to the growth of foliage.

As for pests, plants are most often exposed to spider mite attack... Most often, these pests attack plants with rare spraying. Therefore, spraying brugmansia should be strong and abundant. The spider mite settles on the back of the plant leaf.

In addition, such pests can attack brugmansia, like caterpillar, aphids and slugs... If you notice these pests on your shrub, then you should start treating the plant with special preparations for this a couple of times a week.

The poisonousness of the plant

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldBrugmansia belongs to poisonous plants... In some countries, planting brugmansia in public places is even prohibited. Absolutely all parts of brugmansia, especially seeds, contain psychotropic and toxic substances... These substances tend to cause hallucinations in humans. As for the aroma of flowers, it can cause headaches. Of course, no adequate person will chew this plant, but you should be extremely careful if you have small children at home. It is for this reason that before you start and start growing brugmansia at home, you need to think carefully several times.

In conclusion, it should be noted that such a shrub as brugmansia does not require any special care and growing rules. This is especially true for those people who live in the southern regions. In this case, it is worth protecting young children from this plant, since it is poisonous.

Description of brugmansia

Brugmansia (lat. Brugmansia) is a plant belonging to the genus of the Solanaceae family. It is isolated from the genus Datura (dope), the flowers of brugmansia are similar to the flowers of this species. The genus Brugmansia consists of only 6 species of small trees and evergreen shrubs found in the subtropics of South America. The name was given to the plant in honor of the Dutch botanist Sebald Brygmans. Sometimes brugmansia is called the trumpets of the angel. The plant is thermophilic, growing in our climatic conditions is troublesome, but this is justified by magnificent flowers with a fascinating aroma.

The tree-like brugmansia can reach a height of 5 m. If desired, choose more compact varieties: Cordata Red, Culebra. Brugmansia has large leaves about half a meter long, they are entire, oval in shape, wavy edges, veins are clearly expressed. Leaves grow in 2 tiers: the first tier is represented by elongated leaves with elongated edges, in the second - smaller leaves, the edges are embossed. The flowers are huge, their length is 50 cm, diameter is 20 cm. The shape of the flower is tubular. They can be naked, double, there are varieties covered with two-level flowers. The color is varied: yellow, green, pink, peach, orange, red, cream, possibly a combination of 2-3 colors (gradient color), even on one tree the flowers may differ in color. Flowers are always drooping: the tubes hang down.

In the temperate climatic zone, brugmansia is most often grown in tubs: in the summer they are exposed to the garden, and in the winter they are transferred to the premises.

The stems, leaves and flowers of the plant contain toxic substances, so after contact with the plant, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water.

Growing seedlings of brugmansia from seeds at home

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open field

Brugmansia from seeds photo of seeds and shoots

In our latitudes, sowing seeds in open ground is not performed. Sow seeds for seedlings from January to March. Remember that brugmansia grown from seeds lose varietal differences. Take a bowl with light soil, cover the seeds to a depth of 0.5-1 cm, spray the crops from a fine spray and cover with a transparent film or glass. Place in a bright place out of direct sunlight. Maintain a temperature of 20-25º C. The sprouting rate depends on the freshness of the seeds: they may hatch on the 10th or even 50th day.

With the emergence of seedlings, the shelter must be removed. Spray daily with warm water 2-3 times a day, but do not over-wet the soil. When 5 leaves appear on the seedlings, they should be transplanted in separate containers (a plastic or peat cup is perfect).

When the roots of the plant are sufficiently developed (completely entwined with an earthen ball), they can be planted in a permanent container (tub). The soil needs fertile, light.The following soil mixture is suitable: one part of loam, compost or humus with the addition of two parts of peat, mix thoroughly, spill the soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (pink). Lay a thick expanded clay drainage layer at the bottom of the container.

Due to the cold climate, it makes no sense to plant a plant in open ground.

Propagation of brugmansia by cuttings

How to cut brugmansia photo

Cut apical cuttings 15-25 cm long from annual shoots - they take root best. Do this in late spring or early summer. The lower leaves must be removed. Root in water, after dissolving the activated charcoal tablet in it. You can soak the first day in a root solution, and then put it in clean water.

Rooting cuttings of brugmansia in water photo

You can plant the cuttings in a light nutritious soil. Cover the top with a cap from a plastic bottle, periodically spray the leaves so that they do not fade. The roots will appear in a couple of weeks. When they are 5 cm long, transplant them into separate pots. The soil mixture should consist of 2 parts of peat and one part of sand and perlite. The cuttings will take root completely 2-3 weeks after transplanting into the ground.

How to care for brugmansia in the garden

It is widely believed that brugmansia are very capricious in their care, but it is enough just to fulfill certain requirements that even novice flower growers can do.

When to plant in the ground and choice of location

You can move brugmansia to the street when it gets warmer enough and at night it will be at least + 10 ° С. Place the tub in the garden in a sunny, shaded spot at midday. Avoid drafts. You can plant brugmansia in the ground in the spring-summer, and when the night temperature drops to 5-7 ° C, transplant it back into the tub and bring it into the room.

Watering

In the heat, water daily, sometimes spray in the evening. If the weather is cloudy and humid, water after the potting soil dries.

Top dressing

A large plant requires a sufficient supply of nutrients. Complex mineral fertilizers must be applied every 10 days. During the flowering stage, focus on phosphorus and potassium components.

Pruning

No later than mid-March, pruning of brugmansia is carried out. Remove large and damaged branches, shorten the rest a little to create a neat look. Please note that Y-shaped shoots cannot be cut off categorically, because it is from them that peduncles subsequently appear.

Spider mites on brugmansia and other pests

During wintering, brugmansia is occasionally attacked by spider mites - the presence of white cobwebs on the underside of the leaf and drying of the leaves will help to recognize them. In the garden, slugs, snails, aphids can eat the leaves and flowers of the plant. This is evidenced by wilted buds and damage on the leaves. Treatment with fungicides will help from pests. Also remove slugs and snails mechanically.

If brugmansia leaves turn yellow and fall

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open field

Brugmansia leaves turn yellow and fall off what to do

This is a symptom of improper care or illness, there are several reasons:

  • Lack of nutrients in the soil, and especially nitrogen. Urgent feeding is required.
  • The soil has hardened from frequent watering, so the roots receive neither moisture nor nutrition. We need a transplant with a replacement soil.
  • Insufficient watering and air humidity, you need to spray the plant more often and water more often.
  • Damage to diseases caused by constant waterlogging of the soil (if the plant was flooded and there is no drainage, the water stagnated in the sump). In this case, the leaves not only turn yellow, but also curl. It is necessary to transplant the plant into fresh soil, pre-disinfect the pot, be sure to lay drainage, cut off rotten roots. After transplantation, they are watered with a phytosporin solution to defeat the disease. All yellowed leaves are removed and destroyed.After 10 days, they are fed with a solution of potassium humate, which will also help cope with stress. Treatment with a fungicide is continued, it is possible with the same phytosporin, with a frequency of 1 time in 10 days.

Brugmansia in winter at home

Taking care of brugmansia in winter is also not difficult. When the night air temperature drops to 5-7º C, the brugmansia must be moved indoors. In indoor conditions, brugmansia can delight with flowering until the end of the year or even longer. Sometimes flowering may not stop and the dormant period does not come.

There are two wintering options (warm and cold):

  1. Place brugmansia in a warm room by the window. Maintain a summer watering, spraying and fertilizing regime. Additional artificial lighting must be provided. In this case, brugmansia will bloom in the same way as in the garden.
  2. Place the brugmansia in a cool (air temperature 5-8º C), dark, dry place. Water rarely, so that the earthy clod does not dry out completely. Do not be alarmed if the plant sheds its leaves - new buds will appear by the end of winter. Then the plant must be transferred to the light.

During wintering, maintain the following principle: the higher the air temperature, the more lighting the plant will need.

Brugmansia volcanic Brugmansia vulcanicola photo

The rarest species. Grows up to 4 m in height. Flowers 20 cm long densely cover the bush, the color of the corollas is pink, orange.

Brugmansiya belongs to the Datura genus. Depending on the species, it can grow as a shrub, or maybe as a tall tree, so it is most often grown in rather large pots. Why in a pot and not outdoors?

The thing is that this plant cannot stand the cold, so in winter it can freeze and disappear. As for the flowers, they can reach 50 cm in length, having the shape of a bell lowered down with ragged edges diverging to the sides. Has an alluring aroma. With all this, do not forget that the seeds and flowers are poisonous.

Brugmansia species and varieties

Fragrant brugmansia (aromatic) grows very quickly and branches well. Inflorescences are white with greenish veins, and pink in buds.

Brugmansia golden or yellowreaches 6 meters in height. It has yellow, bell-shaped, wide-open inflorescences. The leaves are large, soft and slightly drooping.

Brugmansiya snow-white grows as a small tree with low-growing shoots. It has velvety, oval leaves. The flowers are white (sometimes yellow and apricot shades).

Brugmansia blood red a very tall tree, in nature it can reach 12 meters. It has very expressive orange flowers with yellowish veins and red edging. This type of brugmansia is more resistant to winter, but, nevertheless, it is better for it to winter indoors (especially for young specimens that have yet to get stronger).

Brugmansia variegated (multicolored) this species differs from others in the largest creamy flowers, which in some cases can reach up to half a meter. The shape, like the others, is tubular bell-shaped.

Brugmansia tree the most famous species, has many varieties derived from it. In nature, it grows as a 4-5 meter tree, although there are also small specimens (up to 1.5-2 meters). Among them there are varieties with double or tiered flowers of different colors.

Brugmansia planting and care in the open field

In summer, brugmansia can be planted in open ground, but closer to frost, it will have to be dug up again and brought indoors.

The choice of the optimal place for the healthy growth of the flower will be the key to long and beautiful flowering and abundant growth. After Brugmansia has been indoors for a long time, it will take time for her to adapt.

In the first few days of being outdoors, it is necessary to choose a shady place, after which it can be placed in well-lit (with the possibility of shading from the scorching sun), but not in windy areas of the garden, park, terrace, etc.

Watering brugmansia

Watering is an important part of plant care. In summer, watering should be daily, and on hot days, twice. The exception is the days when it rains. In general, make sure that the soil in the flowerpot does not dry out.

In addition to watering, spraying is also important. But do not allow moisture to get on the opened buds.

to the table of contents

Fertilizers brugmansia

For abundant and long flowering, do not forget about fertilizers. Top dressing is added to the water during irrigation, no more than 1-2 times a week, from late spring to late summer. During the flowering period, the components of potassium and phosphorus will be useful.

to the table of contents

Pruning brugmansia for the winter

Pruning of brugmansia is carried out around mid-March, when damaged leaves and branches are removed and the shoots are slightly shortened.

to the table of contents

Composition of soil for brugmansia in pots

The soil for planting should be light and fertile: loam, compost or humus and peat (1: 1: 2). Before transplanting, the soil is poured with water with a light solution of potassium permanganate. Not forgetting the drainage layer at the bottom of the pot.

to the table of contents

Brugmansia transplant

It is necessary to replant a young plant annually. At the same time, changing the pot to a more spacious one (2-3 cm more). When choosing a material, preference is given to plastic (with drainage holes in the bottom) rather than clay. The pots should not be small, as the soil there dries out much faster, which is fraught with wilting of the leaves.

to the table of contents

Brugmansia wintering

Winter care implies insulation, since brungmancia is afraid of frost, it is brought into the room. In this case, it can continue its flowering. The dormant period in this species is not clearly pronounced, therefore, if the conditions of detention are comfortable, then the flowering will probably last all winter. For example, you will need additional lighting, as it gets dark earlier in winter.

Watering mode can be maintained by maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. If the room temperature is low (5-10 ° C), then watering must be reduced. If the lighting is sluggish, then most likely, in this case, the leaves will fall off, but closer to spring new buds will begin to appear and additional lighting will be required.

to the table of contents

Brugmansia seed cultivation

Not the most reliable method of reproduction, since there is no certainty that a plant grown from seeds will be of the same variety (heredity is not preserved). But still, this method takes place.

Sowing is carried out in the interval from January to March, in a light substrate, the seeds are sprinkled on top with the same soil composition with a thickness of 1-2 cm, moistened and covered with glass or film. The temperature regime is controlled within 20-25 ° C, in bright, but diffused light.

After two weeks, you can observe the first shoots, after which the glass (film) is removed.It is necessary to ensure sufficient moisture of the seedlings (spray it 2-3 times a day), while avoiding waterlogging of the soil. Only when 4-5 leaves appear on the shoot, you can start transplanting into a separate pot.

But still, this is not yet the final "residence" of the flower. Only when the roots completely fill the entire pot (evidence of reliable rooting) can it be transplanted into a permanent pot.

to the table of contents

Brugmansia propagation by cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is the most reliable and common method of propagation. To do this, in late spring (early summer), fresh shoots with an apical bud are taken and cut 20-25 cm long (the lower leaves are removed).

They are placed in water, after adding activated carbon there, the leaves are sprayed so as not to fade, covered with a plastic bottle or jar and removed to a light warm (not lower than 20 ° C) place.

When the roots become about 5 cm, the cuttings can be safely transplanted into hills with a prepared substrate: peat, perlite, sand (2: 1: 1). After 2-3 weeks, rooting will take place and the plant can be transferred to a permanent pot.

Diseases and pests of brugmansia

  • Whitefly, spider mite, gray rot the cause of the appearance can be stress from a sharp change in the regime of care and maintenance. For example, only a purchased plant should not be transplanted immediately, even if you have a more beautiful pot that fits into the overall interior. No earlier than two weeks later, you can carry out such manipulations. Treatment: "Topaz" will help to get rid of gray rot, "Actellik" will help to get rid of whitefly, and "Fitoverm" or "Agravertin" will help to get rid of mites.
  • Young leaves turn yellow and fall off - nitrogen starvation. Add the missing fertilizer to the soil.
  • All kinds of spots appear on the leaves, stripes, light areas, edges are deformed, begin to curl, plant growth stops - a viral lesion. It is better to get rid of such a plant before it infects the neighbors.

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open field

Brugmansia (brugmansia) is a flowering plant from the Solanaceae family.

She comes from the subtropical part of South America. It is appreciated by flower growers for its large and fragrant funnel-shaped flowers.

Adult brugmansia bushes look very impressive. These perennials can be used to decorate a garden, terrace or balcony.

Description

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldBrugmansia is a perennial plant. Depending on the method of formation, it can look like a small tree or shrub. Older specimens are characterized by a wide and branched crown with a thick stiff stem.

The leaves of this plant are quite large, their length can be up to 30 cm. They are ovoid and densely covered with fine hairs. Brugmansia blooms in June.

At this time, large funnel-shaped flowers appear on it. In some varieties, their length can be up to 50 cm.Their color varies greatly:

  • yellow;
  • white;
  • dairy;
  • orange;
  • red.

In most varieties, the inflorescences have a pleasant rich smell, which intensifies in the evening. With good care, garden brugmansia can bloom all summer.

Planting and leaving

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldBrugmansia is very demanding on growing conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of it very carefully and strictly adhere to the basic requirements of agricultural technology.

In most regions of Russia, this flower can only be grown outdoors as a tub plant. We list the basic requirements necessary for the cultivation of brugmansia and its abundant flowering:

  1. The soil. Fertile soils with a high nutrient content are preferred for brugmansia. They also need to heat up quickly, be water-absorbing and breathable.
  2. Location. This flower is best suited for a well-lit, sunny place, with diffused shade at midday. Also, it must be reliably protected from drafts.In partial shade, brugmansia grows abundant foliage, but this negatively affects the number of flowers.
  3. Temperature. Do not forget that this plant tolerates summer heat without any problems, but in winter it will need a bright and cool room.
  4. Watering. Brugmansia is hygrophilous and reacts very sharply to lack of water. When too dry, it sheds leaves and flowers. In the summer heat, she needs daily abundant watering with warm, settled water.
  5. Top dressing. During the period of intensive growth, brugmansia needs weekly feeding. To do this, you can use any complex fertilizer for flowering plants, which is diluted according to the instructions on the package. In the second half of summer, the amount of dressings should be reduced to 1 time in 2 weeks, and at the beginning of autumn they should be stopped altogether. With a correctly chosen fertilization scheme, the flowering of brugmansia will be very abundant, and its leaves will be of a beautiful saturated color.
  6. Features of wintering. In order for the plant to successfully overwinter, it will need to create certain conditions for the dormant period. To do this, before the onset of the first frost, it is brought into a cool and bright room, where it can continue to bloom until the New Year. After that, watering is reduced to a minimum, but complete dryness of the soil in the pot cannot be allowed.

Note: the soil for growing brugmansia should in no case be acidic.

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldThere is also a second option for wintering a flower. To do this, after the onset of the first frosts on brugmansia, all green, unripe shoots are cut off, the soil surface in the pot is covered with peat or sawdust, and it is transferred to the basement or cellar, where the temperature will be maintained within 5-6 ° C throughout the winter.

From time to time, you should check the condition of the soil in the pot and make sure that it does not dry out completely. In mid-March, the container with brugmansia is transferred to a bright and warmer place. Now you can resume watering, and after the buds wake up on the plant, it should be fed.

During the dormant period, leaves may fall off the plant. Do not be afraid of this - this is a natural process, as brugmansia reacts to a lack of light and low temperature. With the arrival of spring, it will resume its growth.

Reproduction

Breeding brugmansia at home can be carried out both by seed and vegetative way.

Sowing

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldThe best time for sowing seeds is February or March. To do this, they are pre-soaked for a day in warm water, to which growth stimulants can be added, and then sown in separate containers with loose and nutritious soil.

Then they are placed in a bright place with a temperature of at least + 25 °. The soil must be constantly kept moist until germination. If the seeds were fresh, then 2 weeks after planting, the first shoots can be seen.

Seedling care consists in timely watering and spraying with warm water. At this stage of cultivation, it is very important to prevent waterlogging of the soil, since the root system of young plants is not yet sufficiently strong, and they are easily affected by various rot.

Good to know: with the seed method of reproduction, the varietal characteristics of brugmansia are not preserved.

After the fifth pair of leaves grows on the seedlings, it will be possible to plant them in separate containers.

Cuttings

brugmansia planting and care at home in the open fieldReproduction of brugmansia using cuttings is more common, since it allows you to preserve all the characteristics of the variety. On this topic on the Internet, you can find a fairly large number of video clips.

To propagate a flower in this way, you need to take young, non-woody shoots and cut cuttings 20-25 cm long from them, while they must have an apical growth point. In the future, such planting material takes root more quickly and actively and starts to grow.

The best period for grafting is the beginning of summer. The photo below shows properly prepared cuttings. Cut cuttings should be placed in a glass of warm boiled water and placed in a warm and bright place.

If all the conditions are met, after 2 weeks the first roots appear on the cuttings, after which they can be planted in separate pots. Some growers for propagation use branches cut in the fall, from which cuttings are cut. They are also rooted in water.

The survival rate of such planting material is somewhat lower than that which was cut in the summer. And the rooting process of autumn cuttings is more extended, in some cases it can last more than a month. Plants grown from cuttings usually flower only in the second year of growing.

Brugmansia is a beautiful plant, currently varieties with double inflorescences have been bred. Providing her with appropriate care, for many years she is able to delight her owner with large and fragrant flowers throughout the summer (you can read about other perennial flowers that bloom all summer long here).
