Sowing is desirable in mid-March. For planting, you should prepare a loose fertile substrate. You will first need to heat the soil for 30 minutes.

The disinfected soil can be poured into seedling containers and watered evenly. For good air circulation, it is necessary to loosen the soil with a small trowel. It is desirable to use a thin layer (no more than 4 mm) of fine-grained sand as a protective top layer.

Step one	Heuchera requires loose soil, which must be mixed with a small amount of sand. As noted earlier, before planting the seeds, you need to calcine the soil in the oven. 5-8 minutes will be enough. Lay the soil in the seedling container quite tightly so that at least 1.5-2 cm remains to the edge.If you did not process the soil before filling the container, then fill it with a solution of potassium permanganate to protect the plant from infections.
Step two	Carefully remove the seeds from the packaging and follow the preventive procedures. A fungicide can be used for treatment, but it is best to soak the seeds before planting.
Step three	Moisten the soil slightly with a spray bottle and distribute the seeds evenly over the surface. For convenience, you can pour the seed onto a specially prepared paper hollow. Tilt the paper towards the soil and lightly taps the heuchera seeds into the ground. In this case, be sure to make notes on the container, thereby denoting the varieties.
Step four	After sowing, the seeds do not need to be covered with earth. To do this, use treated sand, the layer thickness of which should not be more than 8 mm. Processed sand is needed to protect plants from the "black leg". The sand prevents the stems from getting wet as it cannot accumulate moisture.
Step five	Cover the container after sowing with polyethylene or ordinary glass, and then transfer to a lighted place. If necessary, moisten the soil with a spray bottle. It is necessary to use this device so that small particles of sand are not washed out.
Step six	Heuchera takes about 3 weeks to germinate. During this time, you need to periodically ventilate the room, just avoid drafts - the plant is afraid of them. After the shoots appear, make a few holes in the plastic. If you covered the seedling container with glass, but you need to raise it. Plant the plants 4-5 cm apart after 3 true leaves appear.

I like any ornamental deciduous plants, and I have a special weakness for heuchers and hosts ...

In recent years, some species and varieties of geyher seeds have appeared on the market, so growers have the opportunity to grow seedlings on their own.

I want to tell the readers of the site about how I managed to grow seedlings small-flowered geychera (Heuchera micrantha) varieties "Palace Purple", "Purple Castle". This is the famous Heuchera, which has red-purple leaves with a metallic sheen.

Experiments on growing heuchera from seeds

Heuchera has very small seeds, so sowing them and growing seedlings can be difficult.Heuchera seeds are sown on the surface of a loose and moist, well-drained, non-acidic substrate. Seedlings appear in 2-3 weeks; seedlings develop slowly at first.

My first attempt to grow Heuchera from seeds was not crowned with great success. Many seedlings died from mold and when the seedlings were dived.

Then I decided to grow Heuchera seedlings using Gilly peat tablets.
Especially for growing seedlings in peat tablets, I purchased convenient micro-greenhouses (in a store that sells packaging materials).

Geuchera is usually sown for seedlings in March-April. And I decided to conduct an experiment with sowing Heuchera seeds in the fall, sowing them in November.

Geykhera is unpretentious - it tolerates low light conditions well and develops normally in cool conditions, it is weakly affected by the "black leg". As you can see, Heuchera seedlings do not stretch even with autumn sowing.

In addition, for comparison, I sowed expired and fresh Heuchera seeds in order to conduct an experiment to test the germination of such seeds and study the development of the seedlings obtained from them.
As a result, fresh seeds of Heuchera sprouted faster, and from slightly overdue seeds (no more than six months), shoots appeared a week later. Severely expired seeds do not germinate at all, but simply grow moldy.

Excessive hydration of Heuchera leads to decay of its roots. Therefore, I watered the seedlings very carefully: along the wall of a plastic box.

When several real leaves appeared on the young plants, I cut the Heuchera seedlings into peat tablets one by one.
The survival rate of seedlings is very good, because Heuchera is not afraid of transplanting.

Caring for the growing seedlings of Heuchera consisted in moistening the peat tablets as needed (keeping them dry, without excessive moisture) and in regular airing of the micro-greenhouse.

Peculiarities of leaf color in Heuchera seedlings

Seed propagation of Heucher can produce seedlings with very interesting leaf color.

When growing seedlings of red-leaved heuchera from seeds, keep in mind: among the resulting offspring, there may be variations with different leaf colors.
When sowing Heuchera variety "Purple Castle", the main part of the seedlings I grew with red leaves, and several green-leaved plants.

And also take into account the following nuance: in the seedlings of red-leaved heuchera grown from seeds, as they develop, a "chameleon effect" is observed. At first, they all have green leaves - you can see this in the photo of my seedlings.

However, when the seedlings of the Palace Purple Heuchera are grown, their leaves gradually acquire their typical red color. Young plants change color especially quickly after planting seedlings in open ground.

Geyhera care in the garden

Heucheras with brightly colored leaves are most decorative when located in a fairly bright place, where their color becomes the most spectacular. You can plant Heuchera seedlings in partial shade, protected from the hot sun.
It is advisable to shade the Heuchera transplanted into the garden from direct sunlight for the first time.

Heucher is characterized by drought resistance, they can grow on almost any soil (except acidic), including stony ones. But with a sufficient amount of moisture, on relatively nutritious loose soils, heucheras develop better and bloom more effectively - their bushes grow lush and attractive. Mulching the soil around the bushes helps keep it moist.

Heuchera is cold-resistant. This plant overwinters with leaves and is able to withstand significant frosts (up to -40 degrees). But for better winter hardiness, do not forget to huddle the root collar of Heucher, which is exposed during the growth process.

Heuchera in the garden can grow in one place for several years without transplanting. They develop a short, dense, creeping rhizome with strong roots.
As soon as the decorativeness of old plants decreases and the middle of the bush becomes bare, it is time to carry out a rejuvenating division and transplant to a new place suitable for heuchera. It is better to do this in spring, when new leaves appear. Heuchera tolerates such procedures easily and quickly starts to grow, especially if the divisions are not too small (at least with two or three sockets).

Heuchera is not capricious, she can successfully grow as a houseplant in a pot.

Now (in the spring of 2012) I have 3 adult heuchera plants growing in my house. One of them is an elegant "Caramel" variety. I did not grow it from seeds - they sent me its rhizome in such a tortured state (there was nothing alive in the 2 other packages sent with Heucher rhizomes)! My "Caramel" came off with difficulty ...
This is a big risk: buying Heuchera with an open root system, without leaves.

Heuchera is not affected by powdery mildew, from which petunias in containers often suffer.

Heuchera is a plant that gardeners use with great pleasure to decorate their plots. Its leaves are simply amazing with a variety of flowers. They can be white, red, green, cream, gray, purple. Therefore, with the help of Heuchera, it is very easy to make your garden bewitchingly beautiful, if you just want it.

Growing Heuchera from seeds

There are several ways to propagate Heuchera, but we will talk about how to grow it from seeds. This is easy enough to do if you follow some rules.

The shelf life of seeds after harvesting is 6 months. Therefore, be careful when buying, check the terms. Heuchera seeds are planted in wide containers 6 cm high. Make sure that the container for planting is with drainage holes.

The soil for Heuchera must be loose. Add sand to the soil that you have prepared for planting and mix well. Before planting the seeds, heat this mixture for 7 minutes in the oven or microwave. Moisten slightly, loosen and smooth well. Since the seeds are very small, they should not be deepened into the soil. After sowing, cover with glass or plastic and take out to a well-lit place. It is worth sowing in late March - early April.

It will take three weeks for germination. During all this time, the seedlings need to be ventilated, but be careful with drafts, heykhera does not like them. After the emergence of shoots, the glass must be raised, and if it was covered with a film, then holes can be made in it. When three leaves appear on your seedlings, they can be planted at a distance of 5 cm from each other.

In the month of May, when it will already be possible to plant Heuchera in open ground, in a garden with partial shade, dig holes and dig in containers with seedlings there. So the shoots will get stronger much faster and better.
