10 reasons and 10 ways to combat odors in your home

Remember

  • Establish the cause. Having identified the factors that influenced the occurrence of the problem, it is easier to deal with it.
  • Prevent the appearance: do not smoke, watch out for pets, ventilate, do not wash oversized carpets!
  • Use the correct formulations. For natural, woolen products, purchase special products.
  • Read the instructions. Before use, read the composition, description and purpose. Follow the recommended sequence of actions.

I talked about the means and methods that I used myself. Each of them "works" in a different way and helps create a pleasant home atmosphere. If you do not know how to remove an unpleasant smell from the carpet, then use my proven methods.

Popular ways to remove odor from carpet

Organic carpets can ruin the atmosphere in your home. With proper use, folk recipes can remove unpleasant-smelling stains:

Herbs, essential oils

Fragrant herbs and essential oils can help get rid of mustiness in high humidity indoors.

It is worth pre-ventilating the room, treating the carpet with a washing solution with the addition of rosemary extract, lavender oil. Dry thoroughly, re-conduct through ventilation. There will be no trace of mustiness.

Hydrogen peroxide and soda

One of the purification options is soda and hydrogen peroxide. They give a qualitative effect:

  1. Baking soda is used to clean up spilled drinks and food residues. Prepare the mixture by mixing water and baking soda until smooth. Apply the solution to the stain, wait until dry, and vacuum.
  2. Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean natural carpets. Synthetic carpet can shed, you need to test on the wrong side. The stain is filled with peroxide, the area around is covered with paper napkins. Wipe with a brush, vacuum.
  3. To remove difficult stains, prepare a solution of soda, hydrogen peroxide, dish detergent. Mix the ingredients in 1 tsp, apply to the contaminated area. Rinse in running water, dry in the fresh air, will help get rid of the smell.

Other means

Table vinegar - eliminates rotten odors. You can remove the smell of fish from the carpet if you soak the dirty area with 9% essence. As the place dries up, lather with laundry soap, rinse. If the fishy aroma is preserved, repeat the procedure.

Remove old stains of unwanted odor using a chemical reaction of vinegar and baking soda.

A vinegar essence is prepared (300 ml. Water and 100 ml. Vinegar). Soda is poured onto the stain, the solution is sprayed from above until an active foam is formed. It will dissolve pollution, eliminate odor. After several hours, remove the residues with a wet cloth, use a vacuum cleaner, dry.

A solution of potassium permanganate copes with traces of food (milk, raw meat, beer, fish), which can become a source of bad aroma after drying. After getting food on the carpet, rinse with water, pour diluted potassium permanganate. After drying, rinse again with water and dry. The method can be used to clean the fabric surface of furniture.

Causes of bad smells

Thick pile inhibits moisture evaporation, so cleaning the product is much more difficult. The dirt penetrates deep into the soft surface. An unpleasant odor occurs if any liquid has been spilled, and a fungus forms on stains that do not completely dry out. A washing vacuum cleaner will help to clean the dirty places, but the problem of bad smell will remain. The situation is aggravated by irregular airing of the room.Factors causing unpleasant odors:

  • dampness in the room;
  • pet urine;
  • tobacco smoke;
  • spots of various origins.

Industrial odor may be emitted from new carpet. Over time, it will disappear on its own, but if the sense of smell cannot stand it, you can apply certain methods of processing the pile. Do not use perfumed products such as deodorants, perfumes, or essential oils. They will not be able to fix the problem, on the contrary, they will only aggravate it.

Reasons for the appearance of an unpleasant "aroma"

The first and most important prerequisite for the occurrence of a stench is that carpets have a pile and can absorb and retain a variety of liquids inside fabrics for a long period of time. Humidity, stale air and more also contribute to stagnation. All unwanted odors in the home that can be emitted by a carpet, including carpet, are divided into the following types:

  • The smell of a new product.

  • The stench caused by constant humidity in an apartment or house.

  • Stagnant odors of urine, or, as they are also called, ammoniacal.

  • All kinds of unpleasant odors of chemical or organic origin.

  • Tobacco smoke.

Features of removing odors from different materials

The specificity of stain removal is influenced not only by the nature of the stain, but also by the fabric on which it is located. If you do not take this into account during the harvesting process, there will be big problems with the removal.

Cannot be used:

  • bleaches;
  • stain removers.

Silk

Silk products are extremely sensitive; when cleaning them, it is not recommended to use:

  • brushes;
  • vacuum cleaner;
  • chlorine-containing products;
  • steam generator;
  • soap.

Take the item to dry-cleaner if it gets dirty.

Viscose

Viscose coverings can be carefully vacuumed and cleaned with foam no more than once a year. Not recommended:

  • use products containing chlorine and alkali;
  • apply wet cleaning.

Cotton, linen

Cotton and linen items are not cleaned with household products and are sent to cleaning companies for washing. Self-cleaning of stains will damage the item.

Synthetics

Glue-based products do not tolerate machine washing, degrading in the process. Suitable for similar products:

  • dry cleaning;
  • cleaning with special foam.

Jersey

Another material sensitive to external irritants, which is recommended to be cleaned exclusively in cleaning centers.

Jute

It is recommended to remove the stain on the jute as soon as possible, without waiting for it to dry out. Allowed:

  • vacuum the material;
  • apply specially designed means to it.

Note! The material must be impregnated with special protective substances that prevent the penetration of moisture into the structure of the fabric.

Fur

To remove dirt from fur coatings, a special solution is used, made from:

  • water - 500 milliliters;
  • salt - 3 teaspoons;
  • ammonia - 1 teaspoon.

Handmade

Depends on the materials used in the manufacture and the cost of the product. It is recommended to take expensive items made of sensitive materials to dry cleaning.

Carpet

The carpet is not particularly capricious and tolerably tolerates almost all processing methods. If possible, take the item to a dry cleaner.

Eliminate odors

Separately, you should pay attention to ventilation. This important factor of a comfortable microclimate also protects the carpet from excessive absorption of odors.

Ventilate the room as often as possible.

Chemical smell

You can get rid of the aroma of the compounds that processed the carpet in storage using various methods:

  • By intensive ventilation or drying in the open air;
  • By washing with a weak solution of not too aggressive detergents (shampoo, liquid soap);
  • By washing with an even weaker solution of vinegar.

The smell of a new carpet

It is easier to prevent the problem than to get rid of the smell on the carpet.

Pay attention to the condition of the product when choosing it.Especially carefully inspect paths made of synthetic materials

Even if the composition contains exclusively natural fibers, the carpet should still be unrolled and checked for damage or foreign odors. After all, we do not know in what conditions it was stored.

A specialized carpet cleaner will help get rid of the factory smell. There are various modifications of such products, designed for different pile material.

If there is no desire or opportunity to use purchased products, the palace can be sprinkled with a small layer of ordinary dry soda. In a couple of hours, it will absorb an unpleasant odor, after which the soda must be gently swept away or collected with a vacuum cleaner.

Eliminate the musty smell of mold with vinegar and baking soda

First of all, the carpet must be dried. This should be done either outdoors or using forced air injection (fan, air conditioner, strong draft). The only thing that is not recommended for drying is heating devices. Heat can damage the fibers.

To get rid of the mold smell, you need to remove the mold itself. This can be done not only with specialized means, but also with an ordinary solution of vinegar or soda.

  1. Take a regular basin (about 5 liters);
  2. Fill it with room temperature water;
  3. Add 5 tablespoons of vinegar solution (9%) or baking soda;
  4. Stir well;
  5. Using a sponge or brush (depending on the type of carpet), wipe the product;
  6. Dry thoroughly again.

The carpet can also be treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. But, it should be borne in mind that an improperly prepared solution (with a large amount of potassium permanganate) can stain the fibers.

Quartzing with an ultraviolet lamp will also help to completely get rid of mold. Such treatment will destroy microorganisms, that is, the original source of the smell.

How to get rid of tobacco smell?

If the baking soda solution does not help remove the unpleasant odor from the carpet, then special products are needed. There are formulations that take into account not only the type of pile, but also the main source of odor. Among them, anti-tobacco products are quite popular.

Given the persistence of the tobacco stench, it is permissible to use strong agents such as hydrogen peroxide. It should be used carefully, as peroxide has a whitening effect.

In severe cases, it is recommended to contact a carpet cleaning company.

Of course, all this makes sense only if there will be no more smoking in this room.

Pets

If your pet has spoiled the fluffy product a little, there are different ways to remove the smell from the carpet. Due to the complex chemical composition of animal waste products, specialized cleaning remains the best option. However, it is expensive.

Cheaper, but almost as effective, ammonia odor can be removed with stain removers and other household cleaning products. To reliably get rid of the smell, you must strictly follow the instructions for use of the product.

First of all, it is necessary to promptly eliminate the direct contamination. If it is solid, then it is easiest to operate with a vacuum cleaner.

The previously considered methods of processing with vinegar, soda or potassium permanganate will help little here. Hydrogen peroxide solution works better. The same methods will help remove fish smell from the carpet if you accidentally drop it.

Eliminate rubber odor

The simplest and most widely used remedy for getting rid of rubber stench in a room is an air freshener. Pick a scent that suits you (citrus or lavender is ideal) and spray it around the room. But keep in mind that the freshener will only weaken the unpleasant smell, mask it.

The odorgone air freshener removes the odor of rubber most effectively.The brand also offers cleaning products, shoe fresheners, and animal odors.

Fresh air

The first way to remove the smell of rubber is to ventilate (whether it be rooms, clothes, shoes, toys ...). Fresh air will not be able to eliminate a very persistent odor, but with a light rubbery smell it will provide freshness to things.

The sun

The next opportunity, how to get rid of the rubber smell on various things, is exposure to sunlight. The sun will help eliminate "rubbery notes" from toys, rugs, slippers, dishes, and other products. Do not overheat so as not to ruin things.

Vinegar

This is a great way to remove rubber odor from your clothes. Check the acid resistance of the material before cleaning. This is easy to do. Turn the garment inside out and apply vinegar to a small area. If no reaction occurs within 10 minutes, continue cleaning.

  1. Prepare a suitable container (it should hold all the items to be cleaned).
  2. Pour about 3 liters of water into a container, add 250 ml of vinegar.
  3. Stir.
  4. Immerse your clothing in the solution. All things must be under water (if necessary, place a jar on top of the wet clothes - it will prevent floating).
  5. Leave to soak overnight.
  6. Do your laundry in the morning. When washing in the machine, use the maximum temperature allowed for a particular garment (it is indicated on the label).
  7. After washing, you can use fabric softener.

Vinegar is good for removing rubber stench from washing machines and other items.

Peppermint oil

If you notice a smell coming from new products, get rid of it as soon as possible. Otherwise it will be absorbed by the surrounding things. One good way to do this is by using peppermint essential oil. Add a few drops to water, wipe the product. Dry it.

Another option suitable for cleaning toys and other items without glued parts. Pour dried mint and lemon balm with warm water, add a few drops of any essential oil. Place the items required for cleaning into the infusion, leave overnight. Wipe and dry in the morning.

Potassium permanganate, peroxide

Many users confirm the effectiveness of a solution of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide in removing the smell of rubber from various surfaces. But both substances are suitable for different items:

  • peroxide is recommended for light surfaces, fabrics;
  • potassium permanganate is suitable for painted things.

Soak a cloth in one of the products (when using potassium permanganate, prepare a pink solution), wipe the product thoroughly. Repeat the procedure several times if necessary. The smell, if not completely gone, will become less expressive.

Alcohol

This is a commonly used method for eliminating the stench of rubber. It is also suitable for plastic products. Alcohol is suitable for cleaning new shoes, toys, washing machine seals that smell like rubber, etc.

Expert opinion
Natalia Osadchaya

Do not clean leather items such as bags with alcohol. This will dry out the skin.

Dampen a cloth or cotton ball with alcohol. Wipe problem areas of the product. After the first application, the smell will most likely not go away. Therefore, periodically (throughout the week) repeat the cleaning procedure.

Special deodorants

A good modern way to remove the rubber stench is to use deodorants sold in drogerie stores. Alternatively, a long-lasting perfume is suitable. The method is suitable for all products, incl. for bags, clothes.

Activated carbon

Another tool that can remove the unwanted "aroma" of the novelty of products is activated carbon. It should be applied (in powder or tablet form) for a long time, ideally for several days. Therefore, activated carbon is suitable for freshening things in which it can remain during this time (bags, shoes).

Place tablets or powder inside (e.g. in pockets) of the item. After a few days, take out, shake out or vacuum.

Flour and soda

This is a somewhat unusual way to eliminate the rubber "scent" from smelling shoes. Mix baking soda and flour. Pour the mixture into fabric bags, which are placed in the shoes. Leave it on for 1-2 days.

Use professional tools

If you do not know how to remove the smell from the carpet, there are ready-made products - odor neutralizers. They act quickly and efficiently, are sold in convenient packaging, and are easy to use. They can be used not only on carpets, but also on curtains, any textiles, shoes, clothes.

What are the smells on the carpet?

In general, the "fragrances" can be divided into three groups:

  1. The smell of a newly purchased carpet or carpet.
  2. Smell left after falling or spilling something on the carpet or from a persistent-smelling object in the room.
  3. Residual odor from improper cleaning or dry cleaning.

Stains should be removed as soon as possible after they appear, so as not to spoil the appearance of the carpet.

In the second group, the most persistent and unpleasant are the smells of beer, vomit, fish, burnt milk, urine of people and animals, tobacco smoke. Due to improper cleaning or simply unfavorable conditions in the room, the carpet can be impregnated with the smell of mold, dampness, and musty.

It is worth noting that there are different ways to get rid of chemical and organic odors. All products described below are designed for use on conventional synthetic and semi-synthetic carpet.

We remove odors of inorganic origin

The types of carpet stains and odors vary and require different cleaning methods.

The smell of a new carpet

A newly purchased carpet has an unpleasant odor due to a variety of chemical impregnations that are designed to improve its usability. So, they should prevent allergies, electrification, etc. Specifically and not very pleasant, the carpet base also smells in the form of latex, rubber or special glue, especially if they are of poor quality.

Usually, the smell disappears within seven days after purchase, provided that the room is ventilated for at least two hours daily. Until the smell disappears, it is advisable to be less in the room where the carpet lies.

Damp smell

As a result of using carpets in rooms with high humidity or improper wet cleaning, the product may have an unpleasant odor, which is quite possible to get rid of. To this end, you should take the carpet out to the balcony or outside in sunny and dry weather and hang it on a rope or crossbar. At least a day is required to completely dry the product and ventilate it.

Smell of dry cleaning carpet

To get rid of the dry cleaning smell, hang the carpet product on the balcony and leave it on for about a week. Ideally, you need to ventilate it outside in dry weather, bringing it into the house at night. As a last resort, ventilate the area where the carpet is located for as long as possible.

The smell of tobacco smoke on the carpet

The smell from smoked cigarettes is one of the most difficult to remove. If the room has been smoked for more than one year, amber is absorbed into all coatings of the room. You can completely get rid of it only by making cosmetic repairs with preliminary treatment of the walls and floor with an antiseptic. And the carpet will need to be thoroughly washed, treated with odor neutralizers, for example, Odorgon spray, dried and ventilated for several days. This can be done at a car wash or in the courtyard of a private house. Of course, if the product is not contraindicated in moisture.

The smell from cigarettes is the most persistent and almost impossible to remove

Smells of organic origin

Spots of proteinaceous and other organic origin require a special approach, and both folk and industrial remedies can be used equally effectively.

Moldy and musty smell

Both of these smells indicate that a fungus has started in the carpet. It is better to give the carpet to a dry cleaner, where they will carry out the appropriate treatment with antifungal drugs and impregnations, but if this is an expensive pleasure for you, you can try to solve the problem with improvised means.

Fungus on the carpet not only spoils its appearance, but also negatively affects health.

Before getting rid of the fungus, you should eliminate the causes of its appearance: dry the room with a split system or an air dehumidifier and ventilate the room more often. Then you can start fighting mold:

  1. Wear safety goggles, a disposable face mask, and rubber gloves to protect against fungal spores.
  2. Take the rug outdoors or open the windows in the room after closing the doors to other rooms.
  3. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the fungus from both the outside and the inside of the carpet.
  4. Take an antifungal agent, for example, from DELU, and, after carefully reading the instructions, apply it to the carpet from the outside and the wrong side. The substance must completely saturate the product.
  5. The floor and all surfaces in the room should also be treated, as well as the brushes and rags used.
  6. The carpet product, after the time period specified in the instructions for the product, is thoroughly washed on both sides and dried, making sure that no fungus stains remain.
  7. After processing, the room should be ventilated for another 3-4 days.

How to remove inorganic odors

  • aroma from a new thing;
  • the smell of dampness;
  • after dry cleaning;
  • stench from tobacco smoke.

Fresh purchase

A fresh purchase often smells not in the most pleasant way, which annoys its owners. To remove unwanted odors, it is enough to ventilate the area where the purchase is located for a week. After the specified period, the unpleasant aroma will disappear on its own.

Dampness

When storing things in rooms with high humidity, they begin to mold, exuding an unpleasant odor. You can get rid of the source of the problem as follows:

  • guess a sunny, warm day and hang the carpet out on the street;
  • we leave it in the fresh air for 24 hours, after which the damp odor disappears.

After dry cleaning

If the product has recently been dry-cleaned and exudes a strong chemical odor, hang it out on the balcony for ventilation.Usually, a day of airing is enough to remove extraneous chemicals from the fabric. At night, the carpet can be brought into the room, and during the day it can be hung out for re-drying.

Tobacco smoke

The pile absorbs tobacco smoke well, which is very difficult to get rid of in the future. In households with smokers, it is recommended not to abuse tobacco products in carpeted areas. It is not always possible to completely eliminate the consequences of cigarettes, and in some cases the thing can only be thrown away. If such a problem arises, it is advisable to take the thing to dry cleaning and not do it yourself.

Smell of vomit

First, remove the undigested food pieces and rinse off the liquid portion with water. Try to work gently on the stain so that it doesn't spread over the carpet. Use a stiff brush to scrub the stained area with water-diluted detergent. Collect the soapy water either with a vacuum cleaner, if available, or with a rag. Dampen the carpet with clean water and remove the water again. Repeat this process to get rid of the soap completely. Dry the carpet.

You can treat the carpet in this situation with an anti-odor agent such as Odorgone. Or take any other similar product, including those sold in pet stores. The principle of action of these products is based on the dissolution of proteins that cause odor by enzymes.

First, remove the main dirt from the carpet. Then soak the scent stain with the product. Let it sit for a few hours. Rinse and dry.

A vinegar solution also helps to remove such a smell. Dilute the vinegar with two parts water. Soak a sponge in the solution and wipe the stain. The main thing here is to process the entire soiled area. Let the vinegar soak into the fibers of the material for two hours. Then rinse and remove any excess moisture. Dry the carpet.

Finally

Now you have figured out how to get rid of the smell from the carpet without resorting to expensive dry cleaning or household chemicals. You just have to choose the most suitable method and try it in practice.

Carpets have many fibers, each of which easily absorbs any liquid. And the villi are very close to each other, which makes it difficult for moisture to evaporate and clean the carpet when the dirt has penetrated deeply. How to get rid of carpet odor? Keep in mind: if something is spilled on the carpet or treated with a washing vacuum cleaner and not dried properly, over time, fungus begins to grow on the fibers of the material, and a persistent nasty smell appears.

Walk very slowly and empty the drawer frequently or change your bag as needed. Mix baby powder with baking soda to leave a fresh scent on the carpet. Carpets with special powders. Specialty powders that eliminate pet odors are available at your local grocery store. Dusted with carpets, they work like baking soda to absorb and eliminate unpleasant odors. The biggest difference between these powders and regular baking soda is the consumption and odor they leave behind.

While baking soda leaves no odor at all, you can use premixed powders to add a wildflower or lavender scent to your carpet. Fill a spray bottle with water and then add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Spray a fine mist around the room and let it dip into the carpet. It will keep your entire home nice and clean. Do this after vacuuming your carpets to enjoy the fresh scent until the next time you start the vacuum cleaner.

Another reason for the smell is bacteria. They can be in the composition of liquid substances found on the carpet, and since it is usually warm in rooms, bacteria that have not been removed intensively multiply, filling the air with an unpleasant odor. A vacuum cleaner can help fight coarse dirt, but it will not kill bacteria and fungus. Cleaning your carpet at home is easy, but other methods are sometimes needed to combat unpleasant odors.And, unfortunately, not all liquid dirt can be immediately detected and removed, this creates certain difficulties in getting rid of the smell.
