Choosing protective goggles

Safety glasses marking.

GOST 12.4.013-97 defines the marking on goggles:

О - open goggles;

OO - open folding goggles;

ЗП - closed goggles with direct ventilation;

ЗН - closed goggles with indirect ventilation;

G - closed sealed goggles;

H - push-on goggles;

K - visor goggles;

L - protective lorgnette.

It is also possible to use double glazing in goggles. In this case, the letter "D" is added to the name of the glasses in the marking. For example, OD - double open goggles. If there is a regulating jumper in the design of goggles, then the letter "P" is used in the name. For example, OP - open safety goggles with a regulating bar.

Imported safety glasses are labeled according to EN166: 2002. According to this standard, markings are applied both to the frame of glasses and to the protective glass.

Closed goggles for work, closed, with indirect ventilation

Indirect ventilation means that the movement of air through the goggles is carried out through a system of valves, which protects the eyes from dust and abrasive substances.

Closed glasses are made of optically transparent StrongGlass glass, hard, anti-fog, increased impact resistance, resistant to acids and alkalis.

The soft Evroprene casing provides the ability to operate in a wide temperature range from -60 to + 120 ° C, is resistant to acids and alkalis, and has an increased electrical resistance.

The obturation strip provides a soft fit of the glasses to the skin of the face, which reduces pressure and fatigue. Models of glasses closed with an additional obturator made of soft elastic polyurethane foam provide additional comfort when working in the cold season, in conditions of high humidity, dust (art. 24127).

The closed PVC goggles body provides the ability to perform work at temperatures from -60 to +120 ° C, has a low electrical resistance, and has a high chemical resistance.

Standards

Closed goggles protect your eyes from mechanical stress. Accessories of this type have a well thought-out design. The main feature is the integration of the frame and body into a single unit. A snug fit is ensured by the presence of silicone or rubber seals. Regular temples in such models are replaced by an adjustable headband.

For the correct selection of protective accessories, the labeling should be examined.

The level of mechanical strength is indicated by letters. The highest degree is reflected by the letter A. On glasses with low strength, this designation is absent.

According to their optical characteristics, glasses are classified into 3 classes. This is also reflected in the labeling. In addition, indicate the protective properties of glasses (based on the applied coatings, the presence of light filters).

Popular models

When purchasing goods among popular models, you need to consider how comfortable it will work in the construction industry, whether the glasses protect from dust, wind, whether they have ventilation. Sometimes a product is required for construction work in heat or at subzero temperatures, in conditions of dirt and possible damage (it must be resistant to scratching).

Below are the brands that are worth paying attention to in the first place:

  • Husqvarna;
  • Dewalt;
  • Bosch;
  • Uvex;
  • ROSOMZ;
  • Oregon;
  • Wiley X;
  • 3M;
  • Amparo;

For welders, goggles with folding chameleon filters, which are equipped with a spark protection function, are usually recommended. Thanks to such a product, you can do work and not make unnecessary movements.

During construction and painting work, it is recommended to take a closer look at closed models that have increased transparency, it is advisable to choose a product with an anti-fog coating and a rubber rim. Double anti-impact lenses and side ventilation are able to protect in production, especially on a lathe.

On the market, products for such purposes are most often offered by companies such as Amparo and Uvex. In Russia, analogues are made at the ROSOMZ plant. They are designed not only for industrial activities, but also suitable for various climatic conditions, have a number of special modifications.

How to choose?

Choose your personal eye protection equipment responsibly. Be guided primarily by the terms of use of the glasses. You need to know what types of protective accessories need to be used in certain cases

Consider the risks that come with the workflow

If there is a need for simultaneous protection of vision and respiratory organs, consider the possibility of combining glasses and RPE. Choose products from trusted manufacturers, before buying, study the quality parameters of the products

Pay attention to the material from which the glasses are made. This could be:

  • polycarbonate;
  • impact-resistant glass;
  • plastic;
  • organic glass.

Lenses are single and multi-layer, regular and with a special protective coating. Additional spraying increases the resistance of glasses to mechanical stress, extends their service life. The overwhelming majority of plastic lenses are equipped with reinforcing membranes.

The anti-reflective coating reduces the reflection of light rays, making the glasses more comfortable for the eyes. To give the lenses moisture and dirt-repellent qualities, hydrophobic spraying is used. Color coatings provide the desired lens tint. The antistatic layer repels dust and neutralizes static electricity. When working in changing lighting conditions, it is recommended to wear glasses with lenses with photochromic coating.

To eliminate electromagnetic radiation, some types of glasses are equipped with folding light filters. The body of protective accessories is usually made of polymers, it can be rubber and silicone. Movable elements are made of plastic or metal

Safety glasses must be comfortable, therefore special attention is paid to their ergonomics

Below is a video review of ZP2 Super Panorama goggles.

How to choose safety glasses?

The level of safety and comfort of work largely depends on the correct choice of PPE eyes.

  1. First you need to decide on the type of construction - open or closed. If the work involves chemicals, a dusty environment or harmful fumes, then the second option should be preferred.
  2. The frame of the frame should not only be durable, but also comfortable. You should give preference to options with a soft inner coating, especially when it comes to closed goggles.
  3. The width of the temples affects safety: the wider they are, the better.
  4. The nose pad must be floating and not rigid to ensure comfortable operation.

Safety glasses material

For the manufacture of open-type PPE frames, plastic is often used, which can be equipped with additional rubberized inserts. Closed products are usually made of plastic, silicone or rubber. Additionally, they can be equipped with an elastic head strap. Some models, including locksmith goggles, have holes in the arms for a rope that can be attached at will.

Lenses can be made from durable polymer or mineral glass. The first option is more durable and practical due to its low weight. As for the second, such products are distinguished by a high degree of transparency, but low resistance to mechanical damage. Lenses can be clear or colored. For example, protective yellow goggles are necessary for work in poor lighting conditions, green - for gas welding, darkened - will protect you from bright sunlight.

Glasses markings

Personal eye protection equipment is marked:

  • O - protective transparent glasses of open type;
  • OO - open folding;
  • OD - open double;
  • Z - closed;
  • ZP, ZN - closed with direct and indirect ventilation;
  • ZPD - closed double with direct ventilation;
  • G - geometric;
  • H - mounted;
  • DG - geometric double;
  • TO - visor;
  • OK - open visor;
  • L - lorgnette;
  • ZG - closed geometric.

Marking

The marking of goggles is well described by GOST 12.4.013-97, where O means open goggles, OO - open folding goggles, ZP - closed with direct ventilation, ZN - closed with indirect, G - hermetically sealed, H - mounted, K - visor and L - lorgnette.

If double glazing was used in the design of the product, then the letter D. is added to the marking.In the presence of an adjustable lintel, a capital P. is added.

The frame is also marked, it consists of letters of the Latin alphabet and numbers. An example is 7LEN166xxxFTCE.

Further, if 3 is indicated, then the goggles are protected from liquids, if 4 - from particles larger than 5 microns. 5 indicates the presence of protection from gas, 8 - from an electric arc, and 9 - from molten metal.

The mechanical strength of the lenses is indicated next. If there is a letter A, it means that they can withstand the impact of particles moving at a speed of 190 m / s, if B - 120 m / s, F - 45 m / s. In the presence of a capital T, we can say that the product in question can be used under extreme temperature conditions (from -5 to + 55C).

The identification code of the filter is indicated in the marking on the glasses: 2 means protection against ultraviolet radiation, if it is 2C or 3, then this is additionally and good color rendering. When there is protection against infrared radiation, the number 4 is indicated, if the glasses protect against ultraviolet radiation, but without the infrared specification, then put in the marking 5, if with the specification, then 6.

You can also find out about the degree of shading: 1.2 are completely transparent glasses, 1.7 are designed for working in open space, 2.5 have smoky or brown lenses.

Scratch protection is indicated by a capital K, anti-fogging by an English N.

Different types of goggles

It would seem, what can differ from each other such simple products as goggles and masks for working with a grinder. But, a person may be unexpectedly surprised by the number of criteria and features that pop up in the process of choosing high-quality, comfortable and functional glasses for protection eye. And this difference is due not to the external component, which is similar to the most common sunglasses, but to the characteristics of the material and the design of protective products. All protective equipment for the eyes used when working with an angle grinder is divided into the following types:

  • Closed glasses are the safest when working with any electric tool. They reliably protect the face and eyes from dust, crumbs, shavings and scale.The only drawback is the rapid fogging of such glasses due to the lack of ventilation. Therefore, it is advisable to give preference to more expensive ventilated products.
  • Open-cut glasses are very similar to conventional sunglasses. Their main distinguishing feature is the shape and material used in their production. These products have a space under the frames to prevent fogging of the glasses. If such protective ammunition is chosen incorrectly, then the product can fall off, and chips and sparks can penetrate under the lenses.
  • Transparent glasses are not a separate type and can be either closed or open. Clear type lenses withstand external influences easily and are not prone to cracking or scratching.
  • Masks and goggles for working with a grinder - these products do not belong to any particular type of protective equipment, but rather are a recommendation for use. It is best to purchase closed-type products that have ventilation.

If a person has no experience in using a power tool, then first you need to familiarize yourself with the operating documents. Observing the simplest rules, you can guarantee the safe and comfortable use of the grinder

It is important to learn one unwritten rule - in case of poor health, weakness, and especially alcohol or drug intoxication, it is prohibited to use any power tool
