Ensuring safe work
The grinder is considered one of the most dangerous power tools used on construction sites. While working with it, you need to follow a number of rules:
- Use protective equipment - mask or goggles, gloves.
- Do not remove the protective cover during operation.
- Never use discs larger than those stated on the power tool.
- Do not use grinding discs when cutting parts.
- Check the tightness of the pressure ring before starting the electric motor.
- You cannot cut the workpiece closer to the center if it has two points of support at the edges. Because of this, the disc can jam, break.
- Check the integrity of the rig before starting work.
- Do not pinch the clamping ring.
- Do not use the grinder near flammable materials, liquids.
- After starting the tool, you need to wait a few seconds for the disc to spin at maximum speed.
- Do not press the tooling against the workpiece when cutting.
- If the disc is stuck, turn off the tool immediately.
- Metal corners, profiles, large diameter pipes are cut in two approaches.
During active work with an angle grinder, you need to use coolant, which is poured over the cut point. The instrument itself should be allowed to rest every 5 minutes.
What material to choose a disc
Today on the market there is a wide range of car polishing attachments that help remove both small cracks and deep chips. Let's consider them in more detail.
Wool discs
Wool discs are most popular due to their low cost and efficiency. Such products are suitable for rough processing of paintwork.
A tougher finish can be obtained with a polishing wheel made of twisted woolen thread. Such products are suitable for cracks of medium depth and small defects.
Abrasive discs
Wheels made of abrasive materials are also considered tough, but unlike their woolen counterparts, they are more efficient and, accordingly, more expensive.
These properties are due to the special chemical composition of the polishing surface coating itself. More often, the abrasive layer is made of electrocorundum, chromium and silicon.
Felt discs
Felt circles are most often used for metal car body parts. These products are of different types, depending on the level of wool of the polishing coating. For polishing, it is recommended that you purchase a heavy-haired wheel that is best at removing fairly deep scratches from colored metal surfaces. Small-haired circles are the least used.
The diameter of the felt discs can be from 70 to 250 mm, and the width remains the same - 25 mm.
Volcanic (rubber) discs
Such discs remove a thin layer of paintwork, after which the surface has a mirror-like shine. Therefore, vulcanite discs are used only at the final stage of polishing, when coarser discs have already been used.
The polishing surface of the wheels is made of vulcanized rubber with the addition of abrasive components.
As a rule, only metal surfaces are treated with a rubber polishing disc, at the final stage of restoration work.
Felt disks
Felt wheels are used at the stage of the main work, after rough processing, but before the final polishing.
Felt products cope with most types of damage and effectively "work" not only on metal surfaces, but are also suitable for headlights, glass, bumpers and other body parts.
When using such a versatile product, one important nuance must be taken into account - the disc must be periodically moistened in water. Then it will be several times more effective.
Also, felt pads are suitable for almost all polishing pastes, together with which they remove scratches even faster.
Wheels ZM
Wheels of this type are used after the car parts have been primed and varnished. Such products are easiest to attach, and sometimes, even completely, are used without grinding machines. By and large, ZM is a consumable cheap material for washing and dry polishing of body parts made of any material.
Foam rubber is most often used as a polishing layer in such discs. When choosing foam discs, one nuance should be taken into account - the smaller the cells of the circle, the better it will polish the paintwork.
Please note that a drill attachment for polishing a car will be less effective than a disc mounted on a grinder (or as it is commonly called, a grinder). Therefore, consider some selection recommendations specialized equipment
Milling
Milling nozzles are produced in various designs, a distinctive feature is the size of the abrasive grains. For their intended purpose during work, such nozzles are similar to rasps, the use of a grinder allows you to increase the speed of material processing. Craftsmen use these devices for the final processing of wood.
Milling cutter for grinder
Special cutters are produced, there is an abundance of assortment on the market, each tool is different in purpose and features. Main areas of application:
- preliminary alignment of edges;
- sawing or cutting out a bowl from workpieces of small cross-section;
- groove selection.
When working with milling and polished attachments with a grinder, it is forbidden to remove the protective device - the tool casing. Each tool has a technical purpose and instructions, which clearly describe the materials suitable for work, the modes of operation of the tool.

Wood sanding attachments
For the grinder, special attachments have been developed that allow for brushing, roughing, milling, and other work. It is necessary to select the right tool in accordance with the material and type of work. The grinding attachment for the grinder is used on the degree of processing of the material, they differ in shape and size.
Roughing nozzles
Rough-type attachments are used in most cases to remove the top layer from a surface or paintwork.Various types help to carry out work in accordance with the required technical parameters.
- The end of the product is grinded using a nozzle with crumbs and spikes, an abrasive grinding emery wheel.
- Thanks to the variety of studded nozzles, it is possible to process surfaces of different heights, grind off the required layer.
- Twisted wire nozzles are used for rough cleaning of wooden products and have various modifications.
Grinding wood with a grinder
It is important to understand that the use of coarse wire or roughing nozzles for the grinder can be unsafe; during work it is possible to hook a nail or a thick rod, which will lead to the tool flying out of the hands
Grinding and polishing attachments
Various surfaces, including wood, are sanded with a special type of attachments. The kit is fastened by using a bolt that is screwed onto the shaft and tightened with a bolt. It is often equipped with a special device that attaches to a drill.
Felt discs are used instead of a wheel for grinding wood, the structure is attached with Velcro, which allows you to replace the used tool without removing the grinder from the shaft. A petal disc is widely used in wood processing. The name is taken from the shape, the location of the processing surfaces.
The use of a grinder or sander depends on the specific situation. For applying ordinary paint, a wood grinding nozzle for a grinder is suitable, deeper processing with a grinder is not allowed, because scratches may be noticed after painting. The longitudinal belt sander moves in the same direction and uses different grit sizes.
What you need to pay attention to when choosing a nozzle for a grinder
Some grinders come with a small diameter of the installed nozzle, as a result of which the craftsmen remove the protective cover, which is very dangerous when working with wood. It is necessary to take a break when working with the tool, because chips of wood can block the cooling holes in the cabinet. The grinder is used only for wood processing; a special machine is used for cutting.
How to properly change the disc on the grinder?
To change the grinder attachment, you need to use a special wrench, which is included with the equipment. A beginner needs to learn the procedure so as not to damage the equipment and tools. Replacement steps:
- Fix the nozzle motionless. To do this, there is a special key on the front of the angle grinder body (on the other side of the rotating shaft). It is necessary to disconnect the tool from the mains, press the button, turn the disc a little so that the spindle goes into the locking hole.
- The pressure ring, which slides over the rig, has two holes. They need to insert a special key for angle grinders.
- Hold the disc lock button with one hand, and slowly turn the key counterclockwise with the other.
- When the locking ring begins to rotate, you can unscrew it by hand.
After removing the pressure ring, you need to remove the equipment, check the condition of the lower flange. If there is a layer of dirt, residues of the processed material, you need to clean the base with a brush. For this, the bottom flange is removed. You can remove the protection. This requires unscrewing the retaining bolts or pushing off the locking ring.
After installing the new equipment, you need to screw on the pressure ring. Next, hold down the rotating spindle lock button. Fasten the key in the holes in the retaining ring and tighten slowly while holding the lock button.

How to choose?
When buying a disc for angle grinders, you should pay attention to several aspects
- The diameter of the circle must meet the maximum allowed for a particular toolkit. Otherwise, the disc may collapse due to exceeding the maximum allowed rotation speed. The resource of the angle grinder may not be enough to work with a large disk.
- Grinding discs have different structures and are rigid, flap and maneuverable. The choice of product is dictated by the desired level of plane uniformity. To give the wood perfect evenness, fine-grained flap discs are mainly used in the final sanding. They are available in spindle and flanged versions.
- Fine grain discs have proven themselves well in wood polishing. Medium abrasive discs are often used to remove the top layer of wood. Coarse grain discs are great for cleaning old paint. The grain size is always marked on the product. The coarser the grain, the faster the grinding will be. However, it should not be forgotten that the cutting or grinding quality of discs with coarse grains is worse. Additionally, manufacturers indicate the hardness of the bonding agent of the wheel backing. When sanding non-hard materials, it is advisable to use discs with a soft bond.
- For cleaning stone and metal surfaces, specialized wheels for an angle grinder are produced - twisted cutters (cutters). They are realized in the form of metal cups, along the contour of which wire brushes are fixed. The diameter of the wire is different and is selected based on the desired degree of grinding roughness.
- Information about the maximum permissible linear speed is applied to the package or the side surface of the circle. The operating mode of the angle grinder is selected in accordance with this indicator.

Sanding hard substrates would not be possible without the use of special interchangeable discs available on the market in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and textures. They are used to polish workpieces in the furniture industry, restore antiques, grind the walls of wooden log cabins, rough logs and remove paint and varnish residues from any surfaces.
In addition, grinding wheels are widely used in the repair of wooden floors and natural parquet, as well as in the manufacture of lining, floorboards, window frames, doors and boxes for them. Discs are often used for roughing, cleaning and polishing various parts, removing rust stains from metal and concrete surfaces, as well as for precise fitting of tongue-and-groove joints, and for other elements requiring a tight fit.
