Characteristic
Seasoned hunters and fishermen often think that it is better to take a hatchet or a folding saw with you on a long hike. Several advantages of this tool speak in favor of the second option.
- The saw itself is compact, making it fairly easy to work with. During the work, the hunter retains his strength.
- A saw can cut wood more precisely and can be used with more functionality than a hatchet.
- The saw also benefits from a low operating noise level and a high level of safety.
If we compare the saw with a camping knife, then the main advantage of the saw will be high performance in a short time. The folding saw is also good in that it will not damage the backpack when carrying it.
Briefly about the device
When choosing a saw, many factors should be taken into account, in particular the load level and the main purpose of the unit. In order to cope with small volumes and to harvest wood, clean the garden area from branches and thickets, and also build small wooden fences, a small-sized version of this equipment is quite suitable.
The device of a mini saw is not much different from the device of a conventional, average unit, for example, such as an echo saw. The only characteristic difference is the length of the tire. These units have short tires, which are successfully used for high-quality cutting of branches or thin trunks of small trees.
Mini chainsaw bar length
As a rule, the bus is fully consistent with the rated power of the purchased device. If you have chosen a product with a long tread surface, but low power, then you will need to apply a lot of effort to get the desired result in the work. And this factor, in turn, cannot but affect the term of operation of the saw and the need for material investments ...
Mini chainsaw device:
- Fast starting engine (predominantly equipped with Power Boost Vortex);
- Working tire;
- Starting amplifier;
- Automatic type digital ignition control system;
- Special mechanism designed for easy chain tightening;
- Oil and fuel tank;
- The oil pump, which takes responsibility for the timely supply of the lubricant mixture;
- Frame filter that ensures system cooling and its smooth operation;
- Anti-vibration system designed to reduce hand fatigue;
- Inertial chain brake;
- With their weight, mini chainsaws do not exceed 4 kg, which makes them very practical to use.
Knife handle
There are a lot of different materials used for the handles of camping knives. They can be conditionally divided into two large groups:
- Natural materials;
- Artificial materials.
The most commonly used natural materials are wood, leather, bone, horn, or a combination of these. Among artificial materials, rubber and various plastics are most often used. The combination of rubber and plastic is durable and non-slip in the hand.
Handles made from natural materials look beautiful but need to be cared for. For a camp knife, the main criterion when choosing a handle material is the convenience of holding it in the hand. Do not take a knife with a metal handle, in winter it will freeze your hand. Also, don't use a slippery grip. If you are unsure of how firmly the knife is held, you can provide it with a loop to secure it to your wrist.
Types of tourist shovels
In order to choose the right camping shovel, you must first figure out what modifications are.
- Classic folding. Modern models have two folding points, they are very compact and lightweight. The kit includes a case, which may have several additional functions.
- Multifunctional shovels. Created on the basis of a machete or a balisong knife. They can be used as a shovel, saw, or a sharp tool as an ax.
- Non-foldable. Models are compact in size, with additional trekking tools that fit inside the grip.
- Small sappers. All-metal shovels, which makes it possible to use them as a hatchet or crowbar.
One of the well-known and quite popular among travelers are Fiskars hiking shovels, which are incredibly durable and well-thought-out design. They are used not only in hikes, but also in personal plots. The range of Fiskars shovels, in turn, also has varieties:
- bayonet - it copes well with digging hard soil, since the sharpened blade goes well into the ground;
- with rounded edges - it lifts the soil well with minimal effort, and for greater comfort it is better to take with a long handle;
- shovel - used for scattering crushed stone or sand, the design of such a shovel helps to lift the load without loosening the working surface;
- for snow - has the shape of a low bucket with a steel pointed edge, durable and with a long service life;
- telescopic - it is especially popular, since it is quite compact, and if necessary, you can quickly put it into working condition;
- foldable - also takes up little space and is characterized by versatility.
Types and functions of garden folding saws
The main function of any garden saw is a convenient and effective pruning of bushes, branches, small boards. That is why these products usually have a special curved shape to make sawing the wood as easy as possible. The truth here is already as used to. Some people like Japanese garden saws, others like classic folding saws. Let's consider what are their differences?
- Japanese folding saws: These are mainly used for sawing and cutting wet branches. And their profile and blades have a special shape, which allows you to effectively cut any tree;
- Classic folding saws: they are flatter and less elongated. With their help, it is easier to prune overhanging branches. These saws are more versatile and easier to handle than Japanese-style saws and are therefore more commonly seen in stores.
Application area
A wide range of small chainsaws are suitable for a variety of tasks. Affordable cost allows the mini chainsaw to be in demand in our market for a long time. Manufacturers guarantee the full performance of the tool, and they also assure that the device is versatile and practical. Saws for one-handed operation are distinguished from others by their low weight, compactness, and small size. This makes them practically indispensable in the process of mobile work. In the field of tourism (for example, for setting up a portable camp), for fishing, for the construction of rafters, scaffolding, when loppers are needed - these models are considered the best.

Folding hacksaw for wood: advantages and disadvantages
Any folding hacksaw has one drawback - it is difficult to saw a log lying on the ground due to the length and inclination of the handle. It is required to raise the log off the ground.
But the advantages of a folding saw are a lot:
- quick alert (unlike a bow saw, it does not need to be pulled)
- it is safe for a backpack and a boat, does not require a separate cover
- the length of the handle allows you to saw off branches growing high
- it is possible to saw with two hands.
In those folding hacksaws that I saw on sale, I do not like the length, they are all short, especially those that are cheaper. They are called that - a lopper or a garden hacksaw. Maybe for knots in the garden, they will do, but on the hike you will have to cut logs.
There is, however, one worthy model of a folding tourist saw - Fiskars SW 75 ... I wanted to buy it, but then prices jumped. So the idea came, and not whether to make a folding tourist hacksaw yourself.

All chainsaws are the same
Remember that today there are gas powered tools on the market, made in different countries. At the same time, none of the existing power measurement systems has been adopted. Therefore, taking into account the power characteristics measured according to different principles (meaning horsepower and kilowatts) will be advisable for a correct comparison of equipment.
But what unites the tool from different manufacturers is:
- the need to remove oil and fuel mixture for a period (more than 3 weeks) storage
- obligatory cleaning of working elements before (6-8 hours) downtime
- lubrication of the drive and driven sprockets (on most models)
- timely sharpening of the chain
- tire flip after 4-5 fillings
- strict adherence to the manufacturer's recommendations in the preparation of the fuel mixture
- periodic (as 2-6 chains wear out) replacement of the tire and the drive sprocket.
After familiarization with the general design and technical features of the chainsaw, it will be justifiably useful to study the specific characteristics of the tool
Summary
When making the final decision on one of the models, you must be sure that all working conditions are suitable for the tasks. Indeed, only in this case, you can count on the extremely complete efficiency of the selected chainsaw.

Folding hacksaw: manufacturing process
Step 1
I cut off the handle from the old (Soviet) hacksaw with a grinder and rounded the edge of the hacksaw blade.
Step 2
I put the canvas on a piece of plywood, outlined the outline of the future handle with a pencil on the eye and cut it out with a jigsaw. Sawed out the second part of the same. Here they are - two "cheeks" of the handle of the future folding tourist saw.
Step 3
I inserted a saw blade between the plywood and drilled through them where the future hinge bolt would be installed.
Step 4
He took off one cheek of the handle, brought the canvas into a folded state and outlined it. For the unoccupied space with folded canvas, I cut out a complex figure from plastic.
Step 5
He put all the parts together and made three holes, through which he temporarily pulled the structure of a folding hacksaw with bolts.
Step 6
I took coarse sandpaper (40), wound it on a block and sanded the edges of the plywood, sanding them.
Step 7
Dismantled the structure, varnished the plywood cheeks. When the varnish was dry, I took up the latch-lock.
Step 8
As a material for the retainer, I used a piece (40 mm long) cut from a steel ruler. I made two holes in it, inserted a bolt (12 mm long) into one of them and clamped it with a nut. I put another hole on the central bolt, marked the place where this bolt will fix the canvas. I drilled a cheek and a hacksaw blade in this place. The latch-retainer of the folding tourist saw works.
Step 9
On the inner sides of the cheeks, I glued thin plastic (cut out from the lids for cans), so that there was no backlash, because the distance between the cheeks is wider than the thickness of the hacksaw blade.
Step 10
I assembled the structure, pulled it off with bolts and nuts. I checked the operation of the folding mechanism of the latch. Once again, from the outside, varnished.
Folding hacksaw ready
Its folded length is 420 mm, and the length of the hacksaw blade is 325 mm and, importantly, it is large-toothed. I went to the forest - to test!

Husqvarna 135, Husqvarna 140
Of all the household options of Husqvarna, we chose these ones, since all the others (for example, models 136, 137, 141, 142, 236, 240) discredited themselves in one way or another and did not make it into our rating for one reason or another.
The brand is rightfully considered one of the leading brands in the world. The statement is best revealed in the segment of semi-professional and professional saws. It is no coincidence that most loggers use Husqvarna. In the segment of home and household use, not everything is so simple. However, nevertheless, they can rightfully compete on an equal footing with Stihl products.
Husqvarna's 135 and 140 models are almost the same. In many ways, they consist of the same parts. The difference is the engine power (1500 vs. 1600 watts). The rest of the details from one, perfectly match the other. Let's go straight to the benefits:
Advantages of Husqvarna 135, 140 chainsaws:
- The assembly is not China.In case someone is important;
- Less fuel and oil consumption than competitors;
- The easy start system is perfectly implemented;
- Convenient side chain tensioner (although recently Calm has made changes to the design and also made it according to the same principle);
- A more sophisticated air circulation system, as a result of which less debris gets to the filter;
- Vibration protection for hands;
- High degree of reliability;
- High maintainability;
- Secondary market liquidity.
Disadvantages of Husqvarna 135, 140:
- High price, especially for a model with a 100 watt more powerful motor. The price is on par with Stihl devices, but significantly higher than most competitors;
- Expensive spare parts. On average, however, rarely required;
- Fewer than Shtil's number of service and dealer centers. True, the Chinese have even fewer of them;
- Great chance to run into a fake;
- Demanding fuel.
Chainsaws Partner 340S, 350S
Based on the feedback from the owners, these devices have proven themselves well. Their advantage can be considered a much lower price compared to the leaders of the rating - Stihl saws. At the time of this writing, the younger model - Partner 340S, could be bought for about 7,500 thousand rubles, the older - 350S - for two thousand rubles more. However, it is still significantly cheaper than any of the Calms, even for a promotion.
The differences between the 340S and 350S Partners lie in slightly different designs of the engine and fuel systems (practically do not affect user characteristics), different tire lengths (45 and 40 centimeters, it is better to take with a short one - it is easier for the motor and the sawer, the chains are cheaper, and it almost any tree is possible).
A significant drawback of any Partner is a very strong vibration. The owners have repeatedly reported this. Even in the user manual, the flaw is not hidden. For episodic short inclusions, it may not be critical, but in the case of more or less prolonged work, the joints of the hands will suffer to a significant extent.
Besides, Partner is not fond of repairmen in services. The reason is the extensive use of self-tapping screws as fasteners. It is clear that the mounting seats suffer during assembly and disassembly, and against the background of increased vibration, everything looks even worse.
At the same time, Partner devices, in particular the Partner 340S model, can to some extent be recommended for purchase. Let's summarize:
Advantages of the Partner 340S, Partner 350S chainsaws:
Disadvantages of chainsaws Partner 340S, Partner 350S:
- Strong vibration;
- Less resource, in comparison with Calms (cylinders and pistons are enough for about 100 cubic meters of firewood. In scenarios of work with an insignificant load, this drawback can be neglected);
- The presence of self-tapping screws in the structure;
- "Picky" to the quality of gasoline and oil (this is true in almost all cases);
- Significant probability of failure, failure, even in a gentle mode of use.
How to choose the right one
The first thing to look for when choosing an ax is the blade material. For its manufacture, good quality steel must be used, capable of keeping sharpening.
There is a "popular" way that you can test the material of a camping ax right in the store. To do this, taking the tool so that the chopping part is in the air, it is necessary to make a quick click on the blade (using your finger or any hard object). A loud and sonorous response should be heard in response. This means that the metal meets the standard and has the required density. If a dull sound sounded, then such an ax will constantly require additional sharpening, and after a short time it will be covered with jags.
After checking the material, you should pay attention to the weight of the ax. To do this, you need to take the ax in your dominant hand, at an angle of 20 degrees relative to the body.
Next, you need to press your hand to the body in such a way that only the forearm remains mobile, and try to raise the ax to an upright position. If this cannot be done, a lighter instrument must be selected. As practice shows, for hiking trips, an average person will be satisfied with a product weighing 600-800 grams. If you choose an ax that is too light for a tourist, then during routine operations (for example, chopping a tree), it will take a lot of energy.
Since during the campaign you will have to work with an ax quite often, you should carefully consider the design and appearance of the tool:
- the handle should be made of a polymer material based on fiberglass, and a layer of rubber should be applied on top, if a wooden handle is preferred, it is better to choose a birch;
- the tool should be painted with bright paint, which will make it easier to find it in the dark;
- the handle, in the place of its abutment to the handle, must be reinforced with a protective lining, which will absorb blows in case of misses during operation.
In conclusion, you should pay attention to the accessories included in the kit. It is desirable that the cover fits snugly against the metal part, and there are places for fastening on the handle
Choose a bright ax so that you can quickly find it in the dark The best material for the handle is fiberglass Pay special attention to the material of the blade
Which folding saw to choose for your garden?
In order to answer this question, it is not enough to distinguish between the types of saws. There are many criteria for choosing a folding saw. Basically, it all depends on what kind of garden work we plan to use it for:
- Weight: lightweight models (weighing 100-150 g) are optimal for small garden work, as well as for hiking and picnics, while classic folding garden saws are an order of magnitude heavier, but more functional. Obviously, the more the saw, the faster it will saw, but the greater the weight. So when choosing a product, you should decide for yourself what is more important: cutting speed or weight;
- Size: This is less about the size of the entire saw, but about the length of the blade. Utility saws usually have fairly short blades (16-18 cm). This does not mean that they will be ineffective for cutting thick branches, it just means you have to do more action and more work. We also note that a longer blade blade often provides more comfortable work, but the price of such products is an order of magnitude higher;
- The thickness of the canvas. The thinner the saw blade and teeth, the higher its sensitivity to side loads and bending. On the one hand, this will allow you to cut branches and bushes more accurately, on the other hand, it will cause more inconvenience in the work. If you are not sure exactly what thickness of a garden saw you need, it is recommended to opt for tools with an average thickness indicator;
- Manufacturer brand: There are not many manufacturers in the garden saws market. The Fiskars folding saw enjoys a good reputation among gardeners and hikers alike. Gardena folding saws are often the choice for farmers who grow their own fruit on their plots. It is considered by many to be the best saw for pruning trees;
- Additional equipment: In principle, there is nothing to add and subtract to garden folding saws, except for a hook. The specially curved blade prevents the saw from sliding off the cut branch, but under certain circumstances this can become a limitation in work, since it is impossible to cut branches with a diameter greater than the length of the saw blade using a hook;
- Cover: It protects the blade from damage and you from cuts - which is why it is better to choose garden saws with a cover;
- Profile: The profiled folding saw allows you to work more comfortably because the blade walks better in the wood and is generally less susceptible to side loads.In any case, you should try to cut the branches as accurately as possible, but as practice shows, for gardeners without experience, a profiled blade is best suited.
Knife blade shape
For a tourist knife, the shape of the blade should be universal. A straight butt shape, which has been tested for centuries, is best suited. You should not chase pretentious forms such as tanto or scramasax, this will only be a hindrance in your work.
Blade shapes like this are common:
- Clip point or finca;
- Spare point, spear-shaped blade;
- Drop point, with lowering of the butt line;
- Various tantoids (Japanese or American tanto);
- Trailing point - with raising the butt (perfect for cutting fish).
Everyone can choose the shape that suits him. If you want a serrated blade, remember that it is nearly impossible to sharpen in the field.
Chainsaws rating
Top mini saws according to reliability and quality are presented in five models. These options are distinguished by an affordable price, maximum service life, functionality. Quality and reliability are determined by technical characteristics
First of all, when choosing a saw, attention should be paid to power, since it is this indicator that determines the service life and reliability of the tool. For minimal repair and garden work, a device with a power of 2 kW is perfect.
For large works, a power of 2.5 to 3 kW is required. As for the type of tires, they are:
- Flat, narrow without kickback minimizes the risk of injury and ensures pause-free work.
- Lightweight give the chainsaw lightness, suitable for work at height.
- With replaceable heads. This type of tire is designed for tools with maximum power, working continuously for up to 10 hours a day. By replacing the head, the tire can be extended.
Outcomes
Motorists who live in wooded areas must include mini saws in the list of mandatory on-board equipment. For example, the Stihl brand saw has a weight of only 3 kg and takes up minimum space in the trunk of a car or in a backpack of a tourist. Quickly cuts a tree that has fallen on the road, cuts branches in bad weather for paving a path.
Modern technologies for processing all component parts have increased the resources of budget models. Today, components are coated with wear-resistant coatings. Electric mini chainsaws are considered the most successful, since they do not depend on the power source, they have an unlimited working radius. On a hike, an electric drive will be indispensable, since there is hardly a power outlet deep in the forest.
