Before starting the assembly, you need to decide on the unit diagram and its main function, because different types of wood differ in strength. If the mechanism will be used only for their own needs, then it is recommended to build a vertical type log splitter. It is less efficient and faster, but easier to manufacture and more mobile. After that, it is worth deciding on the engine. The gasoline engine will allow you to use the device anywhere, and the electric drive works only from an outlet or a battery that will not last for a long time.
If a person does not have his own tractor or parts, then it is best to choose a manual mechanism. It consists of 2 main parts - a jack and a blade. The log will lift under the action of the jack, and the knife will begin to cut the material. The main thing is to firmly fix the elements on the frame.

However, there is a minimum set of parts that any log splitter should be equipped with:
- Hydraulic pump.

Build process
To build your own log splitter, you need to perform several steps:
- Make a knife from a sheet of metal that is at least 10 mm thick. For especially hard types of wood, for example, Yarra, Yatoba, it is better to take a professional blade made at the factory. And for processing large logs, it is recommended to make a compound knife with a thickness of more than 50 mm, it can be reinforced with a steel blank.
- Place the gear 5 cm above the bed. Double the length of the log should remain before the blade.
- Make a movable carriage on which the wood will be fixed and pass through the knives. You need to put it at the height of the gear.
- Install the pusher on the front of the carriage. It is often made from a metal plate.
- Provide the mobility of the rail with the hinge.
- Install a return spring so that the carriage quickly returns to its place after cutting. It is attached so that the rack can rise above the gear.
- Install the pressure lever. When you press on it, the rack should press against the gear and move forward.

It is possible to automate the process of splitting firewood using a screw unit with an electric or manual motor. Cleavers also differ in the way they set firewood. There are 3 types:

Types of structures and principle of operation
The design consists of several main parts - frame, chassis, hydraulics and a tank containing fluids. The latter is always placed at the back of the car. Spraying can be spray or rain. There are 3 types of designs:

Manufacturing process
Step 1. We make the frame.
The base is a profile pipe with a diameter of 40x50 mm. But alone, she cannot cope and can bend. Here option 2. Either we take a thicker pipe, or we strengthen the existing one. With the first option, everything is clear, but how to make the second can be seen in the photo. A simple farm is being made.
We weld the guide to the platform. Keep an eye on the quality of the seams, they must be of high quality and reliable. We weld a scarf on the back side.
To make a slider, you need to use a corner. We cut into the required lengths and weld. The main task is to make free sliding along the guide, but make sure that strong backlashes do not appear.To strengthen the place where the rod of the hydraulic jack will later abut, the slant of the plate is welded.
Step 2. Making the base for the jack.
A hydraulic jack with a lifting capacity of 10 tons is required. But you can pick up the power and less, for example, 6 tons also does quite well. But you need to prepare a good support. To do this, take strips of metal 6–8 mm thick and weld them under the heel of the jack.
Step 3. Handle.
As planned, the jack works from the foot, so you have to modernize the handle. To do this, we simply weld the parts to obtain the required bend that is comfortable for the leg. You can also weld on a special pedal to prevent the foot from slipping. To return the handle to its original position, you can use a spring. But the author took a more complicated path and welded the roller and tied a tourniquet to the handle.
Step 4. Knife.
We make the cutting part of steel at least 3 mm. We sharpen it in the form of a wedge. For fastening to the rail, we use M12 screws. The screws require periodic inspection.
