Also, at least 25% of the power reserve is included in the system.
Example: For example, let's take a case where we need to provide redundancy in a home that has a 300-watt refrigerator, 65-watt heating pump, 6 lamps of 75 watts each, and, say, a 65-watt laptop power supply. Let's calculate the total power consumption:
300 / 0.5 (taking into account the power factor of the refrigerator) + 65 / 0.5 (cos φ of the pump)+ 6 * 75 + 65 = 1245 W
Taking into account the minimum power reserve, we need at least 1.5 kW of power - that is, we need an ATS device with a capacity of at least one and a half kilowatts and a generator of at least 2 kVA. Please note that these figures are at the lower limit of the power reserve, and for the durability of the equipment, it must be laid as large as possible.
Device
Functionally, such a generator consists of two parts: the generator itself and the automatic transfer switch (ATS). Let's consider them separately.
- A generator designed to work with auto start differs from a conventional gas generator in two things: the presence of an electric starter and an automatic heating device. For a gasoline engine, this is an automatically controlled choke or an electric fuel enrichment valve, familiar to scooter owners, for a diesel engine, a preheater and a glow plug. When starting by turning the ignition key or by a signal from the ATS, the starting device and the electric starter are automatically turned on, as the engine warms up, the starting device is turned off.
- The automatic transfer device constantly monitors the voltage in the power grid and, if it is lost for a time longer than the specified one, starts the gas generator, after which it switches the load to its output. When the power supply from the external power grid is restored, reverse switching occurs, and the generator is turned off.The ATS device can be either an integral part of the unit (as a rule, in expensive and powerful installations designed for a load of 10 kW or more), or it can be bought in addition, if necessary, to cheaper generators that can work with an external ATS. The reserve input device also charges the battery of the gas generator.
Turning on the generator by autostart occurs with a delay that consists of two parts: firstly, the start signal is given by the ATS device only after a certain time of power failure, so as not to consume the resource of the device with short starts for a few seconds. Secondly, the load is connected to the generator only after it has warmed up. Therefore, in all cases when such pauses are unacceptable, you will have to buy an uninterruptible power supply in addition to the installation with autostart.
