Can a decorative poppy be grown in the garden?

Nowadays, it is rare in any garden that you can find silk flowers of poppies, which until recently adorned literally every site. And after ripening, you could collect the boxes, pour the seeds out of them and ... send them into your mouth. Well, they were just very tasty ... They were.

Now people are afraid to grow poppy on their plots. Yes, and it is impossible - a ban has been imposed on the cultivation of poppy in Russia.

So what is the fault of this delicate flower? Let's figure it out.

The family of poppies is huge: there are both annuals and perennials. There are varieties with simple flowers, and there are varieties with double, more like peonies. But ... Any poppy contains narcotic substances. Therefore, according to the law, there should not be any poppy in the country. It must not be grown for any good purpose, not for culinary or cosmetic purposes.

Gardeners are often misled by the horticultural firms that sell poppy seeds. Usually under the guise of decorative. Poppy seeds are often found in a mixture of flowers (for example, in a mixture of a Moorish lawn). So an illusion arises - since the seeds are sold, it means that you can plant. In the end, we plant it for beauty. This is not the case, if a gardener has planted a poppy containing narcotic substances on his plot, it means that he is breaking the law, and under the law he faces punishment.

So what kind of poppy shouldn't be grown?

Now the following types of poppy are not available to gardeners for cultivation: hypnotic, bristle-bearing, bracts. But that's not all. It is forbidden to grow varieties of poppies, the diameter of the capsule of which is from 2-5 cm and more. Usually these are all annual poppies and some varieties of perennials. This is especially true for oriental poppy, which gardeners love to plant.

What threatens for a flower garden with poppies?

Of course, the real term for a simple grower is unlikely to be awarded. To begin with, they will warn and ask all the poppy flowers to be pulled out and disposed of. If you disobey or zealously stand up for the flowers, driving police officers away from the flower garden with a pitchfork or a rake, you will receive a fine. Well, those who grow poppy products on a large and especially large scale (this does not apply to flower growers) face a serious period.

In addition to police officers, poppy flowers can attract to your site and people who are strongly addicted to poppy dope. Therefore, before planting poppy, weigh the pros and cons. Moreover, buns with poppy seeds can be bought at any store.

What varieties should never be planted

Most varieties can be safely used to decorate the garden. But there are those that are not allowed:

  • oriental poppy (alas, the most beautiful representative of poppies, but you can get a term for it);
  • hypnotic poppy;
  • bristle-bearing.

Dangerous and prohibited varieties are easy to spot. If the seed pod is large, then immediately destroy the crops of such a plant. Tiny ones don't interest anyone.

Which poppies are suitable for growing

The number of safe varieties far exceeds those for which they can be prosecuted. The most beautiful among them will be:

  • self-seeding;
  • poppy modified;
  • peacock;
  • holosteel.

The first, poppy seed, is perhaps the most famous of all those listed in the article. In addition, it is a perennial, and therefore will delight you with its red color year after year.

The less common are the second and third grades. Alas, they are just annuals, but they bloom incredibly beautifully. Yet they can be propagated by seed.

As for the bare-stemmed poppy, it differs in that it begins to bloom in the spring, and ends only in late autumn. In addition, its color can be orange, yellow, white and, of course, red.

Poppies look especially beautiful in tandem with other wildflowers. Plant cornflowers to red poppies - they will diversify the meadow with blue. And feel free to make this lawn as large as possible. The main thing is to choose well-lit places, because plants love sunlight, but they are undemanding to the soil. Poppy can only be propagated by seeds - they cannot stand transplants because of the tap root system.

What poppies can be grown on the site?

But what if you really want to recreate a meadow with poppies, cornflowers, chamomiles and other meadow grasses on your site? Go for it, because the genus Papaver has more than 100 species, and only a few are banned. You can choose from annual and perennial poppies.

The most famous representative of the first group is considered poppy seed (P. rhoeas). It fits perfectly into the planting in a natural style. This summer plant blooms profusely from June to autumn. Stunningly beautiful annuals are less common. poppy modified (P. commutatum) and peacock poppy (P. pavoninum).

Among the perennials, it is worth highlighting holosteel poppy (P. nudicaule), which blooms from May to late autumn. Depending on the variety, flowers are double and simple, white, yellow and orange, with a diameter of 2.5-6 cm (in the compact variety 'Popsale' they are already 10 cm in diameter). Unpretentiousness is their strong point

Poppies are light-requiring, therefore choose sunny places for them. These plants are also cold-hardy, and perennial species are winter-hardy, so you can sow seeds directly into open ground in early spring (winter sowing is also recommended). As for the soil, these beauties are undemanding to it. And the care for them is minimal. It comes down to loosening, weeding and watering during dry periods (poppy does not tolerate stagnant moisture). But "pets" love to eat: feed them with organic and mineral fertilizers, then the leaves will be rich green, the flowers will be large and bright. Poppies can't stand a transplant because they have a pivotal root system. Therefore, sow the seeds directly into the flower garden and thin out the seedlings later.

I really like poppies, so I recently bought several bags of different varieties of seeds. But I'm afraid to sow: one of my acquaintances had red terry poppies in bloom last year, so the police pulled them all out, and then more than once she was summoned to the prosecutor's office. So I am worried, suddenly the same story may happen to me.

By law, it is forbidden to grow only sleeping pills (Papaver somniferum), which is also called opium poppy, in household and summer cottages. Outwardly, it is a herbaceous annual plant 30-100 cm high. The leaves of the plant are alternate, pinnately dissected, have oblong-lanceolate lobes. The flowers are often white or pink, sometimes red, they have four petals and many stamens. The fruit, like other poppies, is a box.

To accuse someone of unauthorized cultivation of a narcotic potion, a botanist's conclusion is required that the cultivated plant is indeed a poppy for sleeping pills. However, attention to nuances is not always inherent in ordinary police officers. Moreover, if there is a convenient reason to improve the statistics. Your friend was convinced of this.

As a result, the conclusion suggests itself: even decorative poppies are best grown carefully. Several years ago, our editorial office received a letter from a reader who grew poppies in a flower garden and was fully able to "enjoy" communication with the local police thanks to the initiative of her own neighbor. The women quarreled over something, and the neighbor found a win-win way to take revenge: she told the district police officer that a narcotic potion was being grown next to her and supplied to those who wanted it.

If you are not doing anything illegal, then, most likely, you will get off with fright and minor troubles. But there is also another danger - the drug addicts themselves are noticing everything that can be used. You probably know that even harmless drugs, after a series of manipulations, can be turned into a source of "dreams", and most types of poppy contain at least a small percentage of narcotic substances, albeit significantly lower than sleeping poppy. Isn't it a raw material for "experiments"?

In this regard, I recall the casethat happened to one of my grandmother's acquaintances. The old woman sowed some poppy in her garden to consecrate it in the church.Her garden was not angular, she could not be seen from the street, so she was amazed to find the "visitor" one morning. The meeting ended for her with several bruises and a dislocated arm, but who can predict the actions of a mentally disabled person? If I were you, I would rather not risk it. However, if among your seeds there is a variety of Orange with bright orange petals, I think you can plant it - it is hardly capable of causing unwanted associations.
