How to properly store and grow freesia in a greenhouse?

Freesia is one of the favorite plants of many gardeners. Today this flower has about 20 different species - all of them are distinguished by rich colors and delicate aromas. Freesia, the care of which will require some effort, is a very fragile and graceful plant, it will be an excellent decoration for any garden or flower bed. You can find out beautiful ideas for a flower garden in our special article. In addition, due to its fragility and tenderness, this flower is often used to create bridal bouquets. And the unique aroma of the plant inspires many perfumers to create unusual perfumes. Here is such an amazing flower you can grow at home.

How and when to plant freesia

The most successful is the cultivation of freesia in a greenhouse or greenhouse, because then the easiest way is to create the conditions necessary for the plant. In addition, freesia can be grown in a greenhouse all year round, unlike open ground, since this perennial plant cannot winter in our latitudes. In the fall, freesia bulbs must be removed from the ground, otherwise they will die. You can also grow freesia on the windowsill - the flowering period just falls in the winter period. So, let's take a closer look at each of the ways to grow freesia.

Freesia: growing at home

Growing freesia on a windowsill will especially delight you with its winter-spring flowering. For the plant to bloom in January, its bulbs should be planted in September. The pot with the onion should be left in a cool, but bright place and not watered. After the shoots appear, the flower must be transferred to a warm place and start watering. Secrets of the correct watering of flowers on the link.

Freesia: outdoor cultivation

Before planting in open ground, the bulbs of the plant should be pre-grown. To do this, you need to place the bulbs in fertile soil in pots and hold them on a sunny windowsill until disembarking. Planting of the plant is carried out in mid-May, after all frosts have passed. Planting depth should be about 4-6 cm.

Freesia: growing from seed

If you are an experienced gardener, you can try growing a flower from seed. But it is worth mentioning that this method is rather tedious and does not always lead to the expected result. The process involves placing the seeds in prepared potting soil. After that, cover the ground with foil or glass and leave in a sunny place. Seedlings should appear in about three weeks.

Freesia: growing in a greenhouse

When growing a plant in this way, a well-thought-out system of feeding and watering is very important. Sprinklers will help to combine the process of irrigation and fertilization. The first feeding should be carried out after the emergence of seedlings. For this, saltpeter, potassium salt or superphosphate are used.

How to care for freesia

Regardless of which method of growing a plant you choose, there are general recommendations for caring for a plant:

  • Freesia is a very light-loving plant, but direct sunlight can harm it. The best option is partial shade.
  • The plant must be protected from drafts.
  • To achieve a lush flowering, you need to take care of the correct temperature regime. The air temperature should not exceed 22 ° C.
  • Withered flowers should be removed regularly as they take up nutrients from young flowers.
  • As already mentioned, freesia is a rather fragile plant, so it may need support.
  • After the plant has faded, and its leaves have turned yellow, but have not yet had time to dry, the bulbs must be removed from the ground. Before sending the corms for storage, they are cleaned of sand, roots, scales, then dried well for several days at a temperature of 24-27 ° C.

How to water freesia

One of the main elements of freesia care is proper watering. The plant needs fairly frequent and intensive irrigation. After the first shoots appear, the plant must be watered abundantly and made sure that the soil does not dry out, but does not become swampy.

No less important is abundant watering during the development of foliage and buds, and even more so during the flowering period. At the same time, it is important to water the plants in the morning so that the leaves have time to dry well before the onset of heat. Late in the evening, watering freesia is also not worth it - this can provoke rotting.

You will find everything you need for watering freesias in our online store. We have presented only high-quality and reliable equipment that will allow you to create the most efficient irrigation system.

Now you know how to grow freesia in your garden, greenhouse or windowsill. With a little effort, you will soon be amazed at the result. Freesia, which is a relatively laborious process to plant and care for, is undoubtedly worth all the effort and hassle.

Can freesia slurry and advantageously grown do we have both large farms and small producers? We are talking about this with the candidate of biological sciences, director of the wholesale company "Politsvet" Alexei BYKOV.

how to properly store and grow freesia in a greenhouseAlexey Mikhailovich, you cannot imagine how glad I am that we will finally talk about freesia. I "adored" her when I saw her for the first time 40 years ago. But then freesia went to Moscow from the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus as the southern flora. Small such flowers on stalks 15- 20 cmbut with an amazing smell. And when Leonid Semyonovich Gil was the first agronomist to start growing large-flowered terry freesia at the Kiev Vegetable Factory in the late 70s, she could not leave the greenhouse!

Of course, between these "milestones" there were many years of work with freesia at the Research Institute of Mountain Horticulture and Floriculture (Sochi). Here, dozens of varieties of different flowering periods were introduced from Holland, and an industrial technology for reproduction and distillation was developed. Do you think the domestic freesia cut has any chances on the market today?

I have no doubt if you bet on good planting material. After all, the rich experience of forcing tulips and lilies in modern Russia has proven its economic efficiency. Soviet flower growers did not have the right to buy imported bulbs and spent a huge scientific and production potential on their own propagation of all flower crops. Now life and the market dictate their own laws. Moreover, the Dutch themselves write about the sufficient meticulousness of the reproduction of freesia. It is very important that modern varieties give successively 3 peduncles: 1st crop - 60 cm long, 2nd - 40.3th -20 cm.

Let's first introduce readers to the biological characteristics of culture.

Freesia - perennial bulbous plant of the family. iris, roll from South Africa. The leaves are xiphoid, soft, drooping. The flowers are funnel-shaped, of various colors (white, yellow, crimson, lilac, pink, etc.), with a strong delicate aroma. Collected 6-10 or more in racemose inflorescences on high (up to 60 cm) peduncles.

And how does the development of the corm proceed?

It is small (no more than 5, less often 7 cm in circumference), elongated, covered with leathery scales, formed in the 1st year. At the end of the 2nd year, it dies off, and instead a new one develops - a replacement, with renewal buds and tubercles at the bottom.

At home, freesia blooms after relative dormancy, which is confined to the hot season. At this time, vegetative and floral organs are laid and formed in the buds of renewal.

How long is the growing period from planting to flowering?

For Dutch material, prepared for forcing, from 14-15 weeks for the earliest varieties and up to 18-20 weeks for the later ones. Forcing is faster during the warmer months.

Now let's talk about the substrate.

The root system of freesia penetrates deeply and successfully develops on loose and water-intensive soils with a fertile layer of 25-30 cm.Good results are obtained by a substrate of equal parts of litter peat, manure humus, leaf and sod land (or peat with sod soil 2: 1) at adding sand, bone meal (2.5-3 kg / m-1) and lime. The optimum acidity is pH 5.5-6.5 on peat and 6.0-6.5 on soil.

What is parsing planting material?

Only 5+ and more are analyzed for distillation. Its price depends on the variety, on average it is 5-10 rubles.

How much does the cut cost?

The wholesale price is 25-30 rubles, so the market will be more. Freesia is sold in Moscow stores, depending on the season, for 70-80 rubles. But for a provincial market, it's a little expensive.

How are corms planted?

Planting depth varies: on light soils -12 cm from the bottom, on medium - 8-10, on heavier - 6 cm.For planting freesia in pound greenhouses, they arrange ridges raised in the center by 15-20 cm and on the sides by 10- 15 cm, 1-1.2 m wide.Tracks 40 ^ 15 cm.

The corms are planted vertically in transverse rows, 12.5 cm apart from each other. The density depends on the variety and season (12.5 x 6 cm or 12.5x10 cm.).

Explain in more detail, please.

They are planted less often in summer than in spring, since the flowering time falls on a period of lack of light. Varieties with wide and spreading leaves require more feeding area than narrow-leaved and compact varieties. Small-flowered cultivars are planted denser.

Previously, the planting of freesia was mulched. And now?

Necessarily, since the most dangerous thing is soil overheating. They use coarse mulch - granular peat, sawdust, straw, pine bark.

How to plan your landing dates?

Freesia is a year-round crop. I think it's best to use the Dutch seasons planting pattern.

But the summer cutting of freesia in Russia is unprofitable, so you need to rely on the timing of receipt of products from September to June. There is a method of forcing in separate batches, which are planted every month.

What is the temperature of forcing?

The soil temperature is maintained at 15-16 ° C for 5-7 weeks. It is very important! Subsoil heating or cooling plus mulch are used depending on the season. The optimum air temperature after landing is 6-8 °. After 3-4 weeks, it is increased. At night they support 7-9 ″, in the afternoon in cloudy weather 10-13 ″, in sunny 16-18 °. Relative humidity is 65-70%.

Are there any features of agricultural technology, depending on the timing of planting?

Yes, there are such recommendations in the Dutch specialist literature.

Let's take a look at them, excluding the unprofitable summer cut.

Option A - spring bloom (March-May). Corms, depending on the variety, are planted at 80-112 pcs / m2.

And the winter bloom, probably, requires additional lighting?

And not only. There are other features of the technology of option D. The bulk is planted starting from the end of July. The density is less - 64-85 pieces / m2.

Due to lack of light, buds may dry out. Therefore, they resort to cutting the leaves to give more light and air to the flowers.

How is it done, when?

In winter and late autumn, overly developed foliage is somewhat reduced in volume. This is done when the peduncle is still small, a few centimeters. First of all, the hanging leaves in the upper part of the plant are pruned (no more than necessary).

To maintain the optimum temperature of the soil after planting, which falls on the hottest season, resort to cooling it.

And, finally, additional lighting - with lamps with a power of 220-225 W / m. This is optional, but desirable.

What happens without backlighting?

In low light, freesia is grown at a lower temperature level (8-10 ″), the forcing period is lengthened and the quality is, of course, worse.

How much should you highlight and when?

In our conditions, approximately from October 15 to March 15 with a photoperiod of 12 hours.

What are the features of distillation for the fall? After all, these are all school holidays, the name days of Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov, Sophia ...

To get a cut in September-October (option B), they are planted in May-June, at the rate of 100-128 pcs / m2. The problems of the grower are associated with overheating of the soil. The heat in summer, if not taken measures, can delay flowering by 1-2 months. So freesias are easier in the cold summer.

What do experienced Dutch people recommend to us?

Before planting, hold the corms at 14 ° for 1-2 weeks. After planting, use a light colored mulch. And a cooling system through pipelines with cold water, if necessary. Often you have to shade the landing.

Starting in August, if there is no intense heat, and the sprout has reached 2-3 cm, the access of light is gradually increased so as not to cause burns.

How is freesia developing in the greenhouse?

The entire cycle from planting to digging the corms includes three phases of development.

1 - growth phase (from planting to bud formation).

This period is very sensitive to the temperature regime of the soil. A shift of 1-2 ° is enough to cause changes in the development of freesia. Since all the processes of formation of leaves and flowers in the corm take place in the soil, then its temperature of 15-16 ″ is a fundamental point.

2 -phase growth and flowering. Plants continue to form and develop leaves and flowers. Now the climate in the greenhouse comes to the fore. Sudden changes in temperature and humidity are harmful.

3 - phase - from cutting flowers to digging out corms.

What is the watering schedule during forcing?

After planting, the ridges are watered abundantly, and then the water supply is slightly reduced until the roots form. Watering during cultivation is regular, soil moisture is maintained at 65-70% PV, air humidity is 65-70%. It is necessary to water the plants in the morning and make sure that no drops of water remain on the leaves by night.

Do you need feeding?

Freesia is demanding on food, but not very salt-tolerant. The maximum allowed EU is 1.5-2.0. During the season, several dressings are carried out, based on the data of agrochemical analyzes. The optimal content (0.2 n HCL) of nutrients in the soil is as follows, mg / l: N-100-180, P2O5-250-350, K2O-400-500.

The lower limit is optimal during the period of tuber germination, the upper one - during regrowth of the vegetative mass. On dense soils with little organic matter and during the growing season, stick to the lower level.

When are flowers cut?

At the dissolution of the first flower of the inflorescence. The lifespan of the cut is 10 days. The Dutch recommend cutting off more mature flowers with 2-3 blossoming buds in winter. They store freesia in water at + 2 ° C and add a cut feed if the product remains in the refrigerator for more than 1 day. Flowers do not tolerate dehydration, so dry cold storage is minimal.

And what does the content of products after cutting without water lead to?

Then all the buds do not bloom in the vase. In addition, freesia is very sensitive to ethylene; it cannot be kept in the same room with potatoes, vegetables, and fruits. Exhaust gases also act on it (cold garage).

In what form is freesia on sale?

The brush must have at least 4 buds.

After cutting the main peduncle, the second grows 40 cm long, and in a number of varieties the third grows 20 cm. Probably, their flowers are getting smaller?

The main first peduncle, of course, is more powerful, the subsequent flowers are smaller. Abroad, short freesias are sold in bouquets (like violets, snowdrops), often multi-colored.

What should a freesia buyer do?

Cut the stems by 3 cm and place the flowers in the package for soldering in clean water. In stores, products are placed in the same way in a solution with top dressing.

So what on the market is it also better to sell it in packaging and on water?

This is necessary to preserve the freshness of the product.

What to do with corms after cutting?

After cutting the flowers for 3-6 weeks, freesia continues to vegetate, replacing corms and tuber crops grow. During this period, watering is gradually reduced. Daytime temperature 15-25 ″ (night 12 ″), soil -16 ″. Corms are dug out at the beginning of the yellowing of the leaves, before drying out.

The stems are cut immediately. There are 2 methods of further work with planting material: domestic (tested by our science and practice) and Dutch.

Let's give a domestic one in this issue, and a Dutch one in the next one.

The material is dried on racks or in boxes with a mesh bottom in a ventilated and shaded room at a temperature of 25-28 ° for 4-7 days. After drying, they are cleaned, sorted by analysis and placed in storage. Corms for 12-15 weeks are kept at a temperature of 28-31 ″ and an air humidity of 65-75%, and 2 weeks before planting - at 12-15 °. If it is necessary to delay the development of corms, they are placed in a storage with a temperature of 2-3 ″ and an air humidity of 90% before the start of heat treatment.

How was it recommended to preserve the planting material before planting?

If, after the end of the heat treatment, the planting material is not planted for 6-7 weeks and is stored at a temperature of 8-18 °, then corms and tubers "pupate". This happens most quickly at a temperature of 13-15 °. Such planting material does not sprout. In planted and not planted corms, new replacement corms, which are smaller than maternal ones, are formed within 7-9 weeks.

Sometimes, to preserve the planting material, pupation is specially carried out. After harvesting, it is stored for 6-12 weeks at a temperature of 28-30 °, after which at 13 ″ - up to 5-6 months. Air humidity at this time should be 70-75%. With its decrease, replacement corms as a result of the loss of oxen lose their germination.

Alexey Mikhailovich, how many varieties do your suppliers offer? How do they differ?

About 65 varieties. By color, they are divided into white, ivory, yellow, blue and lilac, orange, with strokes. By flowering time: early (early ripening), medium and late. Each range has simple and double flowers. Most of the varieties are fragrant, but there are also odorless ones.

What determines the price of a corm? From terry?

No, it depends on the degree of novelty of the variety. Some trendy strains with strokes on the petals are more expensive.

Previously, freesia in greenhouses was necessarily tied up by pulling the net, as for a carnation. Do today's varieties require a garter?

Necessarily, otherwise the curvature of the peduncles will occur. Support frames are installed on the ridges, on which, when the plant reaches 10-12 cm in height, a mesh with cells is attached. In its absence, the longitudinal rows of wire are pulled, which are attached with twine or cord thread. As the plants grow, the net is raised or pulled another 2-3 tiers at a height of 15-20 cm from each other.

On a note:

Types of cyclamens - Persian cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) belong to this family. primroses (Primulaceae). It is one of the oldest and most beloved floriculture crops in the world. In other countries, as in Russia, cyclamen was traditionally grown for sale from early spring to autumn.

If someone is lucky enough to receive a bouquet with freesia as a gift, he will remain captivated by its wonderful aroma for a long time. Just one stalk is capable of changing our mood for the better with its fragrance, this has long been noticed by perfumers and actively include freesia in the composition of some perfumes. We invite you to fall in love with this flower, growing it in the garden or on the windowsills.

Freesia (Freesia) is a genus consisting of 20 species of bulbous perennial plants, which belongs to the iris family. The genus got its famous name in honor of the outstanding German botanist and physician Friedrich Vries. The appearance of the corm, as well as some morphological and biological features of its cultivation, are similar to gladioli. Green belt-like leaves of freesia up to 20 cm long and about 1.5 cm wide have a clearly prominent central protruding vein.During flowering, a meter-long naked peduncle appears from the center of the bush, ending with an inflorescence-spike of 3-10 bells looking up.

The colors of these flowers can be very diverse: white, yellow, pink, red, orange, crimson, blue, lilac, purple. Often there are varieties with a combined color, when the flower is decorated with several shades at once. Terry forms are also available. In a garden, flowering lasts 4-6 weeks, starting in mid-August. This period is extended due to the formation of lateral shoots on the peduncle. But freesia became more widespread as a very plastic forcing crop, the season of which falls in the first spring months. Every year, the bulb is renewed like a gladiolus, by dying off the last year's and replacing it with a new one. The corm itself is small in size, protected by thin light brown scales.

Freesia in different roles

Having set out to buy freesia bulbs, most likely you will come across varieties of hybrid freesia (Freesia hybrida). But also popular are such species as Freesia refracta and Armstrong's freesia (Freesia armstrongii), which are the progenitors of hybrid freesia.

Freesia Armstrong (Freesia armstrongii) blooms with pink and red flowers. The highly branched peduncle reaches a height of 70 cm and is crowned with a refined inflorescence of 3-5 flowers.

Variety Cardinal (Freesia armstrongii Kardinal) - the most famous member of the group, distinguished by the recognizable shade of the red robe of Cardinal Richelieu.

Broken freesia (Freesia refracta) has many synonyms. It is also called white or refracted. This species is distinguished by its small growth (up to 40 cm in total) and white or yellow shades in the color of the flowers. The inflorescence is formed from 2-5 flowers.

Freesia Alba (Freesia refracta var. Alba) blooms with large snow-white flowers, complemented by a yellow throat with purple shading.

Fragrant freesia (Freesia refracta odorata) is one of the most aromatic varieties. In its scent, the note of lily of the valley is most clearly recognizable. Blooms with 3-7 yellow flowers with an orange spot at the base of the flower.

Freesia hybrid (Freesia hybrida) has absorbed all the best features of both parents. The stately beauty rises to a height of 1 m during flowering and branches strongly. Brushes with flowers of a wide variety of shades and degrees of doubleness consist of 8-10 large funnels up to 7 cm in diameter.

Varieties

  • Ballerina (Freesia hybrida Balerina) has white flowers tinged with yellow at the base of the petals. Inflorescences often bear about 12 flowers, they are small, about 25-30 cm.
  • Rose Marie (Freesia hybrida Rose Mary) blooms with bright crimson flowers with bleached bottom and raspberry touches on it. Peduncles up to 25 cm, 7 flowers each.
  • Orange Favorite (Freesia hybrida Favorite) has bright orange flowers with a slightly darker throat. Reaches a height of 40-50 cm.
  • Helsinki (Freesia hybrida Helsinky) has a complex coloration. Its perianth is purple, shaded with a lilac tone. A yellow spot is located on the lower lobe of the petal, and the pharynx is colored yellow with purple strokes.
  • Royal Blue (Freesia hybrida Royale Blue) has gorgeous large blue flowers. The peduncle reaches a height of about 70 cm.

Nuances of agricultural technology

First of all, you need to know that this is a very thermophilic culture, therefore, every year before the onset of frost, freesia bulbs are dug up and stored in a warm room. During the growing season, freesia will only feel good if the substrate is constantly moisturized. It is worth considering that evening watering is optimal (about 16-17 hours). Then the moisture that gets on the leaves will easily disappear and will not be able to become a hotbed of infection with fungal diseases.

Freesia is vulnerable to the same diseases and pests as gladioli. One of our last articles was devoted to this topic.

Freesia is also a very light-loving plant, therefore, when growing it at home, choose an eastern or western window. But in the garden, a place in an openwork thin shade will be optimal, although more sunny areas will fit. Freesia blooms when daylight hours increase to 12-14 hours.

Freesia is a very light-loving plant, therefore, when growing it at home, choose an east or west window. But in the garden, the best place will be in the openwork thin shade.

And another important point for the comfortable growth of freesia is a heap and friendly planting of bulbs. Then the peduncles grow smoother, and the flowerbed looks elegant.
Also, because of its stature and sophistication of the stem, freesia can fall prey to the first good rainfall. Then all the stalks are on the ground, and the flowers are in the mud. Timely protection in the form of tying to a support will help to avoid this.

For comfortable growth of freesia, this is a heap and friendly planting of bulbs.

Soil for freesia should have three qualities - looseness, nutritional value and moisture capacity. If the bulbs are kept for half an hour in a solution of some stimulant, such as Zircon, Kornevin or Epin, the flowering will have a more presentable appearance.

Freesia in the garden

Freesia bulbs begin to be planted when the threat of spring frosts has passed and the soil warms up to 10–12 ° C. Usually this period occurs at the end of April - May.
The planting depth is 3–6 cm, the distance between the bulbs is 5 cm, for small ones - 3 cm. The distance between such rows is about 15 cm.

If you apply the recommendations above, the first buds on the stems will appear from late July to mid-August. In order to prevent the setting of seeds and unjustified waste of vitality, wilted flowers are immediately removed. Such flowering can last as long as 2 months, until mid-October, after which it is worth worrying about the correct wintering. The bulbs are dug up as soon as the leaves begin to turn yellow. They are cleaned of roots and excess scales, slightly kept in a solution of potassium permanganate and dried in a warm place protected from dampness.

The first buds on stems will appear from late July to mid-August.

Since freesia has small bulbs, they can dry out irretrievably over long months of storage. Storing them in a net suspended over a container of water will help to avoid this.
The optimum storage temperature is 25-30 ° C, a month before planting it must be reduced to 10-15 ° C so that the bulbs go through the ripening period, which guarantees excellent flowering.

Freesia in distillation

If freesia appeals to you as a spring-flowering plant, then it is planted at the end of October. Plants bloom in 4 months.

Since the darkest winter months fall during the development of the vegetative mass, planting should be highlighted until 12-14 hours. But before the flowering itself, the backlight hours should be reduced to 10-11 hours. They also regulate the temperature regime, limiting the temperature to 22 ° C right up to the very bloom.

In a greenhouse, the bulbs are planted in a mixture of peat, leaf, sod and humus soil in equal parts. Planting is carried out according to the scheme described for growing in the garden. Do not forget about the obligatory garter of plant stems.

Do not forget about the obligatory garter of plant stems.

In the greenhouse, a competent feeding system is very relevant. The first of them is carried out after germination with nitrate at the rate of 20 g per 10 l of water. Then a series of dressings begin: every 2 weeks with potassium salt (20 g) and superphosphate (40 g per 10 L of water). Cutting begins when one or two flowers open in the inflorescence.

Home flowering freesia

Freesia in a pot on your windowsill is a real miracle! And not only because it is beautiful, but also because it requires some effort and skill.
The bulbs are planted at the same time as in the greenhouse, or earlier, for example in early September, if you want to bloom in winter. It is worth laying a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot and planting it at the same depth and in the same substrate as described above.

After that, the pot is placed in a bright but cool room with a temperature of 10-15 ºC without watering. As soon as the first leaves appear above the surface, the pot is transferred to a room with room temperature (about 20-22 ºC) and regular, but careful watering, as well as top dressing, begin. After flowering, do not rush to dig up the bulb. After removing the inflorescence, continue watering and caring for the plant for another 1-1.5 months. Then next winter you can plant the same bulb in a pot and get a new bloom.

After removing the inflorescence, continue watering and caring for the plant for another 1-1.5 months.

In conclusion, once again I would like to recall the exceptionally attractive scent of freesia. For people who are vulnerable or prone to melancholy, I highly recommend getting your own personal aromatherapist. Fragrant mood to you!

how to properly store and grow freesia in a greenhouse
Freesia can be grown year-round. The main thing is to create favorable conditions for her. For this will need: deep boxes, quality planting material, greenhouse or greenhouse with good air exchange. Freesia can be propagated vegetatively and by seed. Seeds remain viable 3 years... From them, first-class healthy tubers grow.

Seeds freesias are sown from April to the first half of June in boxes. Freesia needs plant deep - the seeds are sealed to a depth of 15 cm and mulched with peat on top. Be sure to put the boxes in a dark place, since freesia grows better in the dark. After the shoots appear, the mulch layer is removed and the boxes are exposed to light. It is best to place them in a greenhouse or greenhouse.

Freesia seedling care

All summer freesia needs to be watered, every week fed with mineral fertilizers in low concentration. When the plants grow up to 10 cm, they can be planted in a greenhouse or greenhouse. The distance between plants should be at least 10-12 cm.

Flowering occurs 8-9 months after transplanting. The inflorescences are cut after the opening of the first flower. Cut freesia retains its presentation for 10 days.

After cutting the inflorescence, the box is transferred to the shade and watering is gradually reduced. After 3-4 weeks, they completely stop watering. When the leaves turn completely yellow, the corms should be dug up and dried in the shade. You need to store freesia bulbs at a temperature of 20-22 degrees.

Freesia from corms

You can get beautiful flowers much faster if you buy tubers right away. They are planted in a mixture of peat, humus, light soil and sand in autumn and winter.

  • Light soil - 12 cm.
  • Medium - 8-10 cm.
  • Heavy clayey - 6 cm.

Freesia blooms in three months after planting tubers. If tubers are planted in October, flowering occurs in March. The planted freesia bulb in December-January will bloom at the end of May, etc. You can choose the planting time so that the magnificent inflorescences will please on March 8 or another holiday.

Diseases of freesia

Freesia is often affected by fusarium, gray rot. Soak tubers in fungicide before planting. To prevent disease, you need to constantly air the plantings, do not overdo it with watering and maintain a stable air humidity and temperature. It is easier to do this in greenhouses. Excess fertilizer also leads to plant oppression.
