• Strawberries in bags are less likely to be overcome by diseases and harmful insects: in them viruses, fungi and pests do not have time to harm plants due to their rapid death.

Growing strawberries with a bag method, you can plant several of the most fertile varieties at once and get much larger yields. This is especially beneficial for farmers or aspiring entrepreneurs - gardeners, because allows you to earn a lot more money.

For bag technology, we select varieties that do not require special care, have long-term and abundant fruiting and the ability to grow rapidly.

Such varieties include the following:

• Gigantella... A variety that gives a large berry with excellent taste and a weight of about 120 grams - at the first harvest: the subsequent ones will be smaller. From 1 bush "Gigantella" collect about a kilogram of fruit.
• Marshal... Sweet-fruited variety, fruiting with large berries with a barely noticeable acidity. Not afraid of temperature changes and most diseases, gives up to a kilogram of berries from a bush.
• Geneva... Repaired strawberry with elongated large berries, pleasant to the taste, long shelf life and easy to carry. The crop is harvested every 2-2.5 weeks.
• Albion... Repaired plant with large oblong sweet berries with firm pulp. Needs frequent watering and feeding. One bush gives about 2 kilograms of selected fruits.

The cultivation of garden strawberries by the bag method involves the knowledge of some of the nuances.

Selection of bags

Strawberries are grown in white plastic bags 0.25 - 0.35 mm thick: containers made of flour or granulated sugar will do.

It is better to purchase special bag containers with a length of no more than 2 meters and a thickness of 13-16 mm in gardening stores.

Preparing the land for planting

Growing strawberries using bag technology requires light, slightly acidic or neutral soils. Mix thoroughly in equal proportions river sand, turf soil, humus and medium-sized sawdust.

The addition of humus will enrich the soil with nutrients necessary for the normal growth and fruiting of strawberry plantings.

We put expanded clay, pebbles, broken shards or other material for drainage purposes on the bottom of the bags, otherwise the moisture will stagnate at the bottom and lead to rotting of the root system and the aboveground part of the bushes.

On top of the drainage, pour the prepared soil mixture and sew, seal, or close the container in any other way.

Victoria is planted in standing or recumbent bags, that is, by a vertical or horizontal method.

For vertical landings, free space and hooks for hanging containers are required. We plant strawberry seedlings as follows:

• We pull the bags filled with the prepared potting mix, a strong cord or rope and hang them on hooks. It is better to arrange them in 2 tiers - several in each, this saves more space.
• We cut holes 7-9 centimeters wide in the containers.
• We plant strawberry seedlings in the holes. There should be 25-40 cm of free space between the plants.
• We install the irrigation system and fix the lighting fixtures.

Growing Victoria vertically is a real godsend for a small room, and two-tier placement allows you to get more harvest.

Planting strawberries horizontally

If you have a lot of space (there is a large greenhouse, a spacious garage or a room), the recumbent method will do, the main thing is to buy shelving. It is much more convenient to grow strawberries in them than on the floor or on the ground.

We plant strawberry seedlings in the same way as in the previous method, placing bags of soil on racks, preferably two-tiered: both space is saved and maintenance is simplified.

Wishing to grow garden strawberries by the bag method all year round, it is important to provide them with the necessary care and climatic conditions. We will learn how to care for Victoria in a bag.

How to water bagged strawberries

For the cultivation of strawberries, competent watering is important: the soil must be evenly moistened, but not flooded, otherwise the roots will rot, and then the aboveground parts.

The ideal option for Victoria bag cultivation is drip irrigation, in which water is supplied from a common pipe and flows through tubes with droppers at the ends to the seedlings.

The drip system allows you to water the plants evenly, without waterlogging.

To organize such a system, we use plastic or metal pipes, the diameter of which is 16-20 cm, we bring thin pipes to them and install them over containers with berry bushes.

Instead, you can use 2L plastic bottles with 4-5 tubes inserted. Do not forget to regularly add water to bottles: every day, one 30-liter bag with plantings needs 2 liters of moisture.

Do you want bountiful harvests of aromatic Victoria? Provide it with good and long-term illumination using powerful red spectrum lamps (HPS bulbs or metal halide devices).

Daylight hours for garden strawberries should last 12 hours.

We turn on and off lamps or other lighting devices strictly at the same time.When cultivating bagged strawberries in greenhouses, we turn on additional lighting as needed.

In the absence or insufficient illumination, strawberry seedlings stretch and weaken, which has a bad effect on the future harvest.

Temperature and humidity levels

In order for the strawberry to constantly bear fruit and produce large sweet berries, we cultivate it at a temperature of 20-26 degrees, no less: at lower temperatures, the ripening of fruits slows down. There should be no draft in the room.

To regulate the temperature, we use special automatic systems or an ordinary thermometer.

To warm a garage, greenhouse or other room, we use an automatic heater that turns on when it gets cold. And if you need to get rid of excess heat, we just ventilate the room or greenhouse.

The humidity level should be 70-75 percent. If the room is dry, we spray the air and the lower part of the containers with Victoria.

Caring for planting strawberries in bags

Fertilizers and pruning

To make the berries grow large, fill with sweetness and aroma, we regularly feed and cut the bushes.

Fertilizing Victoria

Every week we feed the soil in bags with potash fertilizers, for example, chicken manure (1 part to 20 parts of water), mullein (1 part to 10 parts of water) or wood ash. Feeding with liquid complex fertilizers is also good.

It is especially important to add nutritional supplements when the strawberry bushes are just blooming.

Pruning

When you harvest, cut off the dried leaves and stems so that they do not interfere with the lighting of the bushes and the growth of fresh leaves.

To obtain a year-round harvest, we keep strong rosettes on the antennae - future seedlings. When they develop their own root system, cut them off from the mustache, place them in plastic bags in a cool place and store them at 0- + 2 degrees until they are planted in bags with new fertile soil.

Attention: to improve fruiting, we increase the level of carbon dioxide - it should be 0.15-0.22 percent. To ensure this level, we light a simple candle and leave it to burn out until the end.

Protection against diseases and pests

To prevent the development of diseases and pest attacks, as soon as the leaves begin to grow, we spray the bushes by mixing 1% Bordeaux liquid and 1% colloidal sulfur. Treatment of strawberries with "Fitosporin" is just as effective.

As soon as you notice the initial symptoms of diseases, immediately treat the plants with insectofungicides.

As you can see, growing strawberries in bags is a convenient and uncomplicated technology that allows you to get large yields with significant space savings. The main thing is to provide a compact strawberry with good lighting, timely watering, a sufficient level of humidity, an optimal temperature, and do not forget to flavor it with nutrients every week.

The cultivation of strawberries in bags is carried out according to the Dutch technology, in a vertical and horizontal arrangement of unusual beds. For such methods of planting strawberries, open ground, greenhouses, home conditions using garages and premises for subsidiary farming are suitable.

The cultivation of strawberries in bags has recently become widespread for a reason. This method has several advantages:

• During the year, the berry bears fruit up to five times or more.
• Strawberry bushes are much less likely to suffer from various diseases and damage by pests.
• Growing strawberries in bags takes up little space regardless of where they are grown. But this is especially true for greenhouses, where every square meter is painted up to a centimeter.
• With this method of cultivation of strawberries, there are no weeds.
• Growing strawberries in bags all year round is very beneficial, as fresh berries provide seven vitamins. With a good harvest, there is always a surplus that can be sold.
• A business built on the cultivation of berry crops in this way always makes a profit.

Landing bags

To grow berries, you need to stock up on bags. You can buy them or make them yourself. This will require a polyethylene reinforced canvas. Usually the diameter of the bags is 20 cm, the length is no more than two meters. The side long seam and one short one, which will be the bottom, are soldered. The bags are filled with soil and pulled together with a rope from above. Throughout their area, cross-shaped holes are made up to 10 cm, the distance between them should be at least 20 cm. Then drain holes are made through which excess water will drain. Prepared bags are a kind of plant beds. They are located in the allotted area vertically or horizontally.

Priming

How successful bagged strawberries will be depends a lot on the soil. In order for the seedlings of the culture to grow and develop fully, the soil mixture must be of high quality. Strawberries prefer neutral or slightly acidic soil. You can fill the bags with purchased soil, or you can prepare it yourself. This will require garden soil, to which you need to add humus, sand and sawdust in equal amounts. Before filling the bags, the soil should be treated (that is, well spilled) with a weak solution of potassium permanganate to destroy pathogenic microbes and insects.

Seedling selection

The survival rate of plants in a new place and their further development and fruiting depends on the planting material. Therefore, you should consider some recommendations:

• You should not choose tall bushes, otherwise they will shade other plants.
• It is better to buy seedlings of different varieties of strawberries, which will ripen at different periods. This will significantly prolong fruiting in time.
• If bagged strawberries are grown in greenhouse conditions, self-pollinated plants should be planted so that later the flowers are not artificially pollinated.

This method is especially relevant in the absence of significant areas. The technological process of growing berries using such a growing place does not cause difficulties, but on the contrary, it makes it easier for the gardener to care for the crop, thereby increasing the yield. It is very important to consider the following recommendations:

• If the bags are placed vertically, expanded clay is first poured onto their bottom. The holes through which the seedlings are planted in the ground, with this arrangement, are made over the entire area of ​​the bag according to the principle of the chessboard arrangement. Bags with soil are stacked on top of each other (up to about three pieces) or hung on stable supports or hooks.
• If the cultivation of strawberries in bags in a greenhouse is carried out using them vertically, then lighting is a very important indicator for normal growth. To do this, from time to time, the bags should be turned towards the sun so that the plants are evenly illuminated. Strawberries need air. In order for its access to be free, you need to place three bags on one square meter of the greenhouse, no more.
• According to the recommendations of specialists, the lower bags should be located at a short distance from the floor surface in order to avoid damage to seedlings by slugs.
• When the bags are placed horizontally, the plants are watered in the same way as in conventional cultivation. If they are suspended on hooks or stand one on top of the other, you cannot do without drip irrigation.
• In regions with cold climates, growing bagged strawberries outdoors is a hassle. For the winter, peculiar beds should be moved indoors. They can, of course, be left outside if they are protected from frost.
• When caring for strawberries, there is no need to mulch, since the soil is in a bag, the surface of which copes well with this. There is also no need for weeding and loosening.
• During planting of seedlings, the growth point does not deepen, it should be located at the same level with the ground.
• When the ripening period of the berries begins, the soil should be enriched with fertilizer once every seven days. Potassium supplements or chicken manure can be used.
• For new plants to thrive, old foliage should be removed after harvest.
• The soil in bags and the plants in them are used for two years, then everything changes.

How to plant seedlings correctly?

Sacks are an unusual growing environment for plants. Therefore, it is important that the strawberries feel comfortable. To do this, the following rules should be observed:

• Before planting, the seedlings are dipped first in hot water for 15 minutes, and then in cold water for the same time. This is necessary in order to exclude the entry of pathogenic microbes and pests into the bag along with the strawberry bushes.
• Holes are made in the slots on the bags. Their size should be such that the roots can fit freely. For ease of planting, the vertical bags are tilted. As a garden tool, you can take a regular spoon or a small scoop.
• The roots should not curl up when planting. First you need to straighten them, and then sprinkle them with soil on top and tamp them.

Landing features

Depending on how the soil bags are placed, the planting of the strawberries is different. If their arrangement is vertical, the roots of the plants are well buried, and if they are horizontal - to a shallow depth. Strawberry roots should not be left open for more than 10 minutes, so the seedlings should be kept in moist soil before planting. Depending on the size of the bag, the planting density can be from 9 to 25 plants. After planting, the bag beds should be watered. After about a week, the strawberries are ready. During this period, she needs foliar feeding.

The Dutch method of growing bagged strawberries

A distinctive feature of this berry cultivation technology is the frequent planting of seedlings (after two months), due to which strawberries bear fruit all year round. The bags are filled with weed-free soil, enriched with nutrients. Peat and perlite are introduced into it. The Dutch system is used when growing strawberries only in a greenhouse or on a loggia. Strawberry seedlings for mass cultivation are bought in the store. In order for the bushes to start quickly, they should be soaked in water for a couple of hours. It is not difficult to grow berries using this system, it is important to follow some recommendations:

• Strawberries are a light-loving crop, so daylight hours can be extended by using fluorescent lamps that are installed above each bag.
• To maintain the optimum temperature, the greenhouse must be heated in winter.
• Plants must be regularly ventilated, therefore strong ventilation should be installed.
• To obtain a good harvest, strawberries are planted in portions all year round.
• In a greenhouse or other adapted room, compliance with the temperature regime is a prerequisite. Strawberries develop normally at 21-23 ° C.
• It is necessary to provide proper care, which consists in watering and harvesting. The irrigation system must be equipped in advance. To do this, five to six tubes are removed from a large plastic bottle, each of them is lowered into a bag after 50 cm. Water must be constantly poured into the bottle. For one bag of seedlings, two liters of liquid per day are enough.

Horizontal placement of strawberries

It is possible to grow berries in bags according to this principle on the street, and not only in a greenhouse. This method is suitable for large rooms or open ground. The bags are placed directly on the ground or in racks arranged in several rows horizontally. As for open ground, if the area of ​​the site allows, many long rows can be made, leaving the aisles for the width of a person's passage.During rain in open ground, the plants are covered with a film so that excess moisture does not get into the bags and root decay does not begin. The horizontal method is very convenient, since the bushes in polyethylene do not need to be mulched, but to weed and loosen the earth.

Vertical growing method

The vertical cultivation of strawberries in bags significantly saves space both in the greenhouse and in the beds in the garden. When growing strawberries outdoors, the bags can be placed near the fence, which will serve as a reliable support. Only in this case, unusual beds will have to be periodically rotated to provide the plants with uniform illumination. If you equip special supports in the middle of the garden, you do not need to do this. Vertical planting in open ground is not always convenient, since it can only be used in the summer. In the greenhouse, this method is used all year round.

An example of growing strawberries in bags step by step:

1. First you need to prepare the bags and fill them with soil enriched with fertilizers.
2. Then the containers should be tied with a rope and placed vertically or hung on hooks. Bags can be installed in two or three tiers.
3. After that, you need to make holes for planting strawberry bushes at a distance of 20 cm from each other.
4. The final stage is the arrangement of the irrigation system, heating and additional lighting, if strawberries grow in a greenhouse.

In winter, I specially selected the 5 best strawberry varieties from the catalog and ordered by mail from the nursery. I am going to write more about these new varieties in the nearest future. I could not buy bags for growing strawberries, I had to use exactly the same bags for growing tomatoes. Tomato bags filled with soil already mixed with fertilizer are great for growing strawberries. Both tomatoes and strawberries are fruits, that is, they require a high amount of potassium fertilizers for good fruiting. The finished grow bags already have small holes to drain the water.

I put the strawberry growing bags on the flat walls that line our patio from the flower garden. These walls are exposed to the sun most of the day and are therefore great for growing strawberries. In the bags on the surface, I made holes with scissors cross to cross (you can make rectangular slots). According to the technologies of growing strawberries in bags, which I saw in botanical gardens, 3-4 strawberry bushes are planted in each bag. I thought that for a start, it is quite possible for me to plant more bushes in each bag and made the cuts in a checkerboard pattern. True, later I noticed that the bushes of tall strawberries throw quite a lot of shadow on each other (see photo), so it’s probably still better to plant strawberries in bags a little less often than I did. 8 bushes per bag will be optimal.

Bagged strawberries - planting

I soaked the strawberry planting stock with an open root system that came by mail for an hour in water, as recommended. The strawberry growing bags need to be shaken a little to loosen the soil inside. When planting, a little more difficult than I expected, placing the huge root system of the strawberry bushes in the bag turned out to be.The fact is that growing strawberries in containers before, I always dealt with planting material from garden centers in small pots or with plants grown from the ‘whiskers’ of my own strawberries. The roots of this planting material are much smaller than those that are grown for sale with an open root system (see photo). I had to suffer a little, pushing the strawberry roots into the small slots in the bags. Despite the presence of potassium fertilizers in the soil of the bag, I added a slow acting complete fertilizer when planting under each strawberry bush. When planting strawberries in bags, as well as in open ground, care must be taken that the growing point is level with the soil level. If the strawberries are planted higher, then the roots will dry out, if lower, then the plant may rot.

I planted strawberries in bags at the end of February (it could have been earlier, our climate allows it), and already at the beginning of March, they took root and began to actively grow and develop. At the beginning of May, the first strawberries bloomed, and now, at the end of May, when I am writing this article, we have already harvested the very first harvest of an early variety of Christina strawberries grown in bags (see photo).

Growing strawberries in bags - technology

In general, the technology for growing strawberries in bags is the same as for growing strawberries using more traditional methods.

For watering strawberries in bags, I personally use a regular hose, which I direct directly into the slots of the bag. In addition, I grow bagged strawberries right outside, i.e. watering is provided by the most natural method - rain. If you have a lot of bags of strawberries, you can create a more advanced irrigation system, see the photo of strawberries in bags from the botanical garden. If the weather is too rainy, then you can cover the bags of strawberries entirely with plastic foil (I have a mini greenhouse with arches in my photo, which was perfect for a patio wall). The film cover will protect the berries from water and decay.

When ripening berries, mulching the space around the strawberries with straw or garden material is not required to protect the fruit; the mulch function is perfectly performed by a plastic bag. Do not forget that if the strawberries in the bag are not high enough from the ground, then they will be exposed to the invasion of slugs and snails, albeit less than the one grown in the beds. After flowering and the formation of the first berries, weekly liquid dressings should be added to the care of strawberries in bags, because trace elements in the soil are already mostly used. For strawberries, use a high potassium formulation, such as a tomato or fruit tree fertilizer. Watering with a solution of chicken manure is very effective (we have our own chickens).

After the end of fruiting and harvesting, the old strawberry leaves in bags are cut to a height of approx. 10 cm from the ground, like a normal one, to give the plant's rosette and young leaves access to light - this will make the plants stronger for the next year. 'Mustache' strawberries can be rooted in small pots by placing them next to the bags.

Strawberry seedlings from their own 'whiskers' are planted in bags in August so that they have time to root for the rest of the summer and autumn. Planting material from open-root nurseries can be sacked at any time, but it is best to do it again as early as possible in the spring, as soon as the weather permits. It is good to combine strawberries of different fruiting dates in a bag, then the harvest can take longer. For an earlier harvest, you can put bags of strawberries in the greenhouse or cover with garden fleece from early spring.

In the fall, you should add earth to the holes with strawberry bushes if the roots are bare. In cold regions for the winter, remove the bags of strawberries in a cool place (in a cellar, prikop, etc.) and store with minimal watering (it is only necessary that the soil does not dry out completely).If you live in a cold region and leave the bags in the garden for the winter, they should be covered more securely than strawberries outdoors.

In the second year of cultivation, it is necessary to start feeding strawberries in bags from the very beginning of the growing season, since the soil in the bag has already been depleted. Strawberries are grown in bags for no more than 2 seasons of fruiting, then the old plants are thrown away, taking from them the right amount of ‘whiskers’, and the soil from the bag is scattered in the garden.

Growing strawberries in containers outdoors is modern, interesting and beautiful.

It is also the best way to feast on self-grown berries for those gardeners who do not own their own land plot, and modern overworked townspeople who do not have the opportunity to often travel to the country.

For several years abroad, remontant varieties and hybrids of strawberries in suspended containers have been grown on an industrial scale in protected ground. The undoubted advantages of growing strawberries in boxes on the street are the efficient use of space (more fruit-bearing plants are placed on a square meter) and the economical use of material resources (a small amount of soil in containers, low consumption of irrigation water and fertilizers and plant protection products).

We can use the elements of technology on a garden plot or on the balcony of a city apartment. To obtain a satisfactory result of growing strawberries in boxes above the ground, it is imperative to carefully prepare and comply with several mandatory requirements.

When growing strawberries in balcony boxes, there are no operations to weed and remove excess mustaches, and the harvest of berries itself is much more convenient, ripening berries hang on long stalks outside the container, do not get lost in the leaf mass, do not rot and do not get dirty with soil.

Choosing containers and boxes for strawberries

First of all, we select containers for strawberries of the appropriate volume. One plant should have at least 1.5-2 liters of soil. Drainage holes are required to drain excess moisture. The walls of the container must prevent strong drying of the soil. For this reason, hanging coconut pots are not suitable for growing strawberries. The best option is plastic or ceramic containers. In order for the root system of plants to not suffer from overheating of the soil, boxes for strawberries should be light in color. Wooden or metal barrels are also quite suitable if these conditions are met.

Before growing strawberries in crates, you need to find the right soil. The soil for filling containers should be very nutritious, but at the same time loose, breathable, permeable to moisture, but not drying out quickly. Taking into account all the requirements, a slightly acidic peat substrate enriched with nutrients can be considered the best. To improve air permeability and maintain a loose structure throughout the season, it will not be at all superfluous to add to it one fifth of the volumetric part of perlite.

Since strawberries are an extremely light-loving culture, containers should be placed in a sunny place, where it will receive direct sunlight for at least 10 hours a day. North and heavily shaded balconies are unfortunately not suitable. On the site, containers can be placed in the most unexpected places: on the lawn, paved area or terrace steps. An additional advantage - near heated paving stones and stones, our plants, due to the receipt of more heat, will produce berries with a high sugar content faster.

To obtain a harvest for a long period, it makes sense to plant in containers only remontant large-fruited and small-fruited varieties and hybrids.

High-quality, strong seedlings with embedded peduncles for planting strawberries in containers can be taken outside from the moment of the onset of stable warm weather. On balconies, this is possible, as a rule, from the end of April, on the site - from the first decade of May. We pluck out the first peduncles.

From the moment of planting strawberries in boxes, we provide plants with regular abundant watering, preventing both the soil from drying out and excessive moisture. 2 weeks after planting and then every 14 days, we carry out regular liquid fertilizing with a solution of complete mineral fertilizer.

Indicative doses: Dissolve 1 tablespoon of dry mineral fertilizer containing all macronutrients in 5 liters, for one plant the consumption of working solution is 200 ml (one glass). We purchase the most nutritious and concentrated liquid fertilizers - for flowering and fruiting plants. We dilute in water and water according to the instructions. Forgetful or very busy gardeners are now perfectly rescued by dry nutrient sticks, they are also set in the ground next to the plants at the recommended rate, depending on the volume of the container.

When purchasing healthy seedlings, chemical treatments against pests and diseases are not required.

Depending on the selected variety, fruiting begins in July and continues until the end of September. On average, you can expect to get 300-400 g of berries from a bush.

How to store strawberries in containers in winter

Unfortunately, strawberry bushes cannot hibernate in pots. The soil freezes through, which is detrimental to the root system of plants.

Before storing strawberries in containers in winter, at the end of the season - it is advisable to do this before September 25 - the plants with a lump of earth from the pots are removed and added dropwise to a regular garden bed. If the bushes die in the fall or spring of next year, it means that they were genetically programmed to bear fruit during one season.

If small containers with flowering bushes are brought home at the end of September or in a heated greenhouse with a temperature of 15-18 degrees Celsius, then fruiting can be extended for another month.

The most daring gardening enthusiasts try to harvest strawberries on home windowsills or in heated greenhouses in winter. In theory, this is quite possible. After all, modern remontant varieties for laying flower stalks do not need either a period of physiological rest, or a period of exposure to low positive temperatures. The main limiting factors in this case are lack of light and dry indoor air. Providing artificial supplementary lighting with special lamps, as well as an optimal diet and watering regime, it is quite possible to obtain a harvest even in winter.
