The characteristics of the branches of vegetable growing (open and protected ground) and potato growing in the Nizhny Novgorod region are presented. Information is given on the districts and farms allocated for the production of potatoes and vegetables, the pace of construction of sheltered ground facilities, vegetable and potato storage facilities, and state support for industries in the region.

The Nizhny Novgorod Region is a region with a long history of growing potatoes and vegetables. Residents have been engaged in beekeeping, arable farming, and vegetable growing for a long time. The famous rusty cucumbers, pickled in pumpkins, were even supplied to the tsar's table. Today, the region's agrarians continue the glorious traditions of their ancestors.
Second Bread Strategy
The Nizhny Novgorod region is fully self-sufficient in potatoes and is one of the ten large potato-growing regions in Russia. In 2017, all categories of farms produced: 894.1 thousand tons of potatoes. The volume of potato production in agriculture. organizations of the region have been achieved both due to the expansion of areas and an increase in productivity due to:
- expanding the use of virus-free material of high-yielding varieties;
- increasing doses of fertilizers;
- construction of modern controlled storage facilities;
- creation of processing industries;
- improvement of sales systems.
One of the leading farms in the region is Aksentis LLC of the Gorodetsky municipal district. Construction of OOO Aksentis began in 2012. Having started with marketable potatoes, the farm is now changing its specialization, focusing on the production of seed potatoes. The enterprise is equipped with modern technology for growing, sorting and storing products. Qualified personnel, the use of the latest technologies and effective management of LLC "Aksentis" ensure the stable development of the economy. The agricultural enterprise produces original, elite and reproductive seeds for the largest foreign and Russian partners. These are such companies as HZPC Sadokas (Holland), Stet Holland B.V., FritoLay, Lam Weston Belaya Dacha LLC. At the moment, on the territory of the enterprise there are seven bulk storage facilities with a total capacity of 17.5 thousand tons and nine container-type storage facilities for seed potatoes, the total storage volume is 20 thousand tons. by Industrial Ventilation Incorporated with polyurethane foam insulation. Tolsma-Grisnich ventilation equipment is installed in the container storage complex. Work is underway to build a container storage complex for another 10 thousand tons. It includes three storage facilities and a workshop. Mini tubers and original seeds will be stored here. Since 2015, a promising direction is the activity of the laboratory for the year-round production of potato mini-tubers in an artificial climatic environment.The laboratory for the production of potato mini-tubers is equipped with modern equipment of the American company CETS-phytotrons. Today the design capacity of the laboratory is 300 thousand mini-tubers per year. In 2016, a micropropagation laboratory was launched, which meets world purity standards.
At the beginning of August 2017, the International Field Day "POTATO RUSSIA 2017" was held at Aksentis LLC. The largest potato growers discussed the cultivation, preservation and marketing of crops, and the world leaders in the production of agricultural machinery presented their line of their best machines. "Potatoes are the second bread." This phrase in different languages sounded there from everywhere. And this is understandable, because on the Field Day, which unfolded on the territory of LLC "Aksentis", many well-known companies gathered - from Russia, Germany, USA, Holland and other countries. All of them are somehow connected with potato growing: these are agricultural producers. equipment, seeds, plant protection products, irrigation systems and microclimate; firms engaged in the construction of warehouses and storage facilities; navigation system suppliers and many others. The largest potato growers from neighboring countries - Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan - also became honored guests of the event.
Open field vegetable growing
The main production of vegetables in open ground (over 30% of the total) is concentrated in Arzamassky, Gorodetsky, Shatkovsky, Bogorodsky, Kstovsky, Krasnobakovsky, Lyskovsky districts. For example, in the Bogorodsky District in 2017, five agricultural producers were engaged in the production of open field vegetables. organizations and one farm is LLC Agrofirma Iskra, OJSC Laksha, LLC Vegetable Company NN, LLC Bogorodskie vegetables, a new enterprise LLC Agroinvest and IP GKFH IV Gvozdev. In total, more than 8.6 thousand tons of vegetables were produced in the region in 2017, which is 2 thousand tons more than in 2016.
LLC "Agrofirma" Iskra "and LLC" Laksha "are potato-growing farms that, having a full range of equipment for potato production, use it for growing table beets, which can significantly reduce its cost and accelerate the payback of the equipment. LLC "Vegetable Company NN" produces cabbage, beets, carrots and onions. LLC "Bogorodskie vegetables" in 2017 was engaged in the production of white cabbage. The production of Brussels sprouts and broccoli on the lands of the former FSUE "Uchkhoz Novinki" was also carried out in the Bogorodsky district and the new enterprise LLC "Agroinvest". Farmer Igor Viktorovich Gvozdev is engaged in the production of white cabbage, annually receiving 50-60 t / ha.
Vitamins all year round
Three greenhouse complexes with a total planting area of more than 26 hectares are engaged in the production of greenhouse vegetables on an industrial basis. The main producers of open ground vegetables are OJSC Agrokombinat Gorkovsky, TK Zhdanovsky, OJSC Dzerzhinskoe. They produce for the residents of Nizhny Novgorod and the region more than 9 thousand tons of off-season vegetable products per year. In 2017, JSC "AK" Gorkovsky "is implementing a new project, the goal of which is the technical re-equipment of one boiler house and the reconstruction of 4 hectares of greenhouses. The implementation will increase the area of the greenhouse complex to 20 hectares. The design of the greenhouses provides for the possibility of further installation of equipment for growing vegetables using photoculture technology using interplanting on an area of 4 hectares. As a result of the implementation, the volume of production of greenhouse vegetables will increase by 1,700 tons per year. In 2018, they plan to build greenhouses: JSC Dzerzhinskoye - for growing green crops with an area of 1 hectare; LLC "Agrocomplex" Doskino "for growing salad line with an area of 2 hectares. The main task in greenhouse vegetable growing is further reconstruction of the material and technical base of farms.
Take away, save, realize
An important link in the production of potatoes and vegetables is not only the development of modern technologies, but also the construction of potato and vegetable storage facilities with climate control and maintenance systems, the acquisition of equipment for sorting, storage, washing, cleaning and packaging.There are 239 storage facilities for fruit and vegetable products in the Nizhny Novgorod region, of which 219 are potato storage facilities, 19 are vegetable storage facilities and 1 is a fruit storage facility. The total storage volume of potato and vegetable stores is 398 thousand tons of potatoes.
LLC PK "Nizhegorodskaya Potato Sistema" in 2016 built automated potato storage facilities in the village. Poya of the Lukoyanovsky municipal district with a capacity of 16.4 thousand tons and vegetable storage in the settlement of Svetlogorsk of the Shatkovsky municipal district with a capacity of 18.48 thousand tons, of which 14.785 thousand tons are for storing carrots. Sales of vegetables in the Nizhny Novgorod region will amount to about 26.8 thousand tons, including 18 thousand tons of open field vegetables.
The key to success is land reclamation
One of the most important factors in ensuring the reproduction of soil fertility is irrigation and drainage reclamation. Today, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has developed a state program "Development of the agro-industrial complex of the Nizhny Novgorod Region", approved by the Resolution of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region dated April 28, 2014 No. 280. It includes the Subprogram "Development of land reclamation of agricultural land in the Nizhny Novgorod region until 2020" (hereinafter - the Subprogram). In 2016, a participant in the Subprogram was PC Nizhegorodskaya Potato Sistema LLC (hereinafter - PC NKS LLC). It put into circulation 3116 hectares of ameliorated land. Thanks to this Sub-program, record yields of potatoes, beets and carrots were obtained. In 2017, 1057.76 hectares of irrigated land were commissioned from the plan of 730 hectares (145% to the target). Potatoes were mainly grown on the reclaimed land. The yield was 60 t / ha. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod Region is planning to develop land reclamation in the region in the future. In 2018, it is planned to build reclamation systems on an area of 554 hectares.
Problems and solutions
In 2017, 351.7 thousand tons of vegetables in open and protected ground were produced in all categories of farms in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The limiting factor in the development of the sub-industry is the problem of selling products at prices that allow efficient production. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to create a logistics center, build modern vegetable stores and provide agricultural enterprises with high-performance equipment. It is also necessary to further expand the range of vegetable products.
