What varieties of lilacs do not grow?

The largest amount of growth is produced by common lilac and many varieties based on it. If the shoots are not needed, then set the base of the bush at ground level, but not higher than 2-3 cm.

In a grafted seedling (stock - common lilac), place the root collar on a small mound 7-9 cm above ground level, so that there is less growth from the "wild" stock (common lilac).

Grafted specimens on a Hungarian lilac stock practically do not produce overgrowth. When planting such a specimen, on the contrary, deepen it 6-7 cm, so that the cultivar is easier to transfer over time to its own roots. The chances are few, but it is better to have them than not to have them.

It turned out that most people know very little about the familiar plant, even if it grows everywhere: on city streets, boulevards, squares, dachas. Our pet has countless beautiful and dissimilar varieties!

It is difficult to imagine old noble nests, monastery gardens, modern summer cottages without lush thickets of lilacs. And therefore it is hard to believe that lilacs are a stranger in Russia. It was brought to Europe from Persia in the 16th century. And we cultivate even less. So, I came to court! By the way, earlier this exquisite shrub was called not lilac, but chenille.

On average, one bush blooms for 2-3 weeks. Different species and varieties bloom at the same time, so that you can prolong the magic spectacle by planting early flowering, middle and late flowering periods. The earliest varieties of lilacs, depending on the weather, can bloom even from the second decade of May. The late ones, completing the lilac parade, appear in all their glory in the second, or even in the third decade of June. The flowering of each plant lasts an average of 12-18 days.

But first, it is worth mentioning the wild lilacs, although they are not as chic as the varieties bred by breeders. It is known more than 30 natural types of lilacs... They can be found in southern Europe and Northeast Asia. They are all shrubs. Most are deciduous, but there are also evergreens.

The most popular species lilac in our country is ordinary lilac. It is from her that many luxurious varieties of Russian and foreign selection originate. Amur lilac, or crackling, attracts attention not only by the honey smell of flowers, but also by its size. The bush is able to raise a spreading crown to a height of 5-10 meters!

Faced with another species, someone will probably think that it is some kind of strange lilac. Blooms late, inflorescences and leaves are slightly different. This is Hungarian lilac, it is often used in urban landscaping.

One of the most beautiful views - lilac drooping... Its inflorescences do not grow straight, but gracefully bending under the weight of flowers and buds.
Many spectacular varieties, especially modern ones, may not have a scent or it is barely perceptible.

Finding among the many species and varietal lilacs the one that will decorate your garden is not an easy task.
You can start "casting" from the size of the plant... There are large bushes (3-4 m), medium-sized (2-3 m) and compact (up to 2 m). In the latter, inflorescences are formed at the level of human growth, so it is easy to see each petal.

To divide varietal lilacs into groups is not an easy task. The starting point is often flower shade... Whites, dark purples, cold “inky”, deep purples, bluish, lilac or lilac, pinkish, magenta (mauve) and purples. The latter are "redder" than purple, but "blue" magenta.
In the sun, the rich shades of many varieties fade quickly. And in the heat, the bushes fade much faster than in cool weather.

The color of lilacs of the same variety in different areas sometimes differs markedly. If the soil is sour, the pink note intensifies, and if the soil is alkaline, then the blue one.
