The main difference between this species is its nutty taste. Burleigh is brown, but also red. Unlike the best varieties of cigar tobaccofrom the variety "Virginia", which was described above, "Burleigh" practically does not contain sugar, but nicotine in the composition of as much as 4%. Due to the low sugar content in tobacco, it is often saturated with sweeteners so that it does not give off strong bitterness during use. The lack of sugar is expressed by the firmness and dryness of this Virginia variety.

The described type of tobacco takes the silver line in terms of content in tobacco mixes, of course, after the variety "Virginia". It is grown mainly in the USA and Mexico.

The leaves reach the desired condition by natural drying, that is, only the collected tobacco leaves are hung in a well-ventilated barn and there they already reach the desired degree of humidity, and natural ventilation of the room (wind) helps them in this. This is followed by the traditional aging, splitting and sorting process.

Latakia

This variety is the leader among "spicy" tobaccos. It is said that its scent cannot be confused with any other species. The cultivation of "Latakia" is currently only taking place in Cyprus.

Cavendish

This variety is an independent species though, and is made by a mix of Virginia and Burley varieties, which are specially processed. When creating this type of tobacco, other types can also be used, such as, for example, in Dutch mixes.

Burleigh

Burleigh tobacco is literally nut tobacco. It has a brown matte leaf color and a rather tart smell of hazel. It contains from one and a half to four percent nicotine, which is why it is usually classified as a light smoking material. Unfortunately, compared to Virginia, there is very little sugar in Burleigh, so when preparing tobacco for sale, it is abundantly enriched with syrups and similar sweeteners.

Burleigh ranks second in terms of content in mixtures. It is grown in Tennessee, Virginia, Missouri, Mexico and other regions.

To process Burley, specialists usually use natural drying, in which fresh tobacco is hung in huge, mostly open sheds and kept there for about sixty days. Thus, the tobacco does not dry out and gets rid of excess moisture.

At the end of the drying process, Burley is kept, then plucked and finally sorted By the way, the palette of shades of such tobacco begins with a light brown color and ends with a rich red woody shade. After being treated with smoke, the tobacco is covered with a thin layer of so-called soot, which is why it is called “baked”. The very direct drying of tobacco can last up to two months, it ends when the leaf blade of tobacco darkens.

The aroma of "latakia" has a somewhat wild, they say about such "an amateur". The smell of this tobacco is considered to be masculine and is compared with the aroma of incense.

Latakia is especially popular among the British, which is why not a single mixture of English production is complete without this variety.

Sometimes a portion of latakia in a mixture can reach fifty percent of the total mass. You can also smoke pure latakia. But, having already decided on this, do not forget that the percentage of nicotine in it is very high and pipes / cigarettes / cigars with its use will be distinguished by a special strength. "Perique"

So, let's get acquainted: perique is a tobacco famous for its unusual aroma and rarity. Only the lucky ones manage to smoke perique tobacco just like that. Paradoxically, the black color of this tobacco and the leaf blade, with its elasticity reminiscent of a code, does not fit in any way with its subtle extraordinary aroma, reminiscent of a strange mixture of dried fruit compote and soy sauce with mushrooms. In addition, Perique is a very heavy tobacco containing the lion's dose of nicotine. That is why there is very little of it in mixtures, up to two percent for the entire agreed mass.

"Oriental" 

The name of this tobacco betrays its origin. And no, Oriental is not the side of the world, it is the Eastern Mediterranean. It is in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus that this wonderful variety is grown. Plantations with Oriental tobacco can also be found on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula.

Drying of this variety is done by the solar method. The Oriental color palette ranges from green-yellow to brown with a golden hue.

The sweetness of this tobacco is much less than the sweetness of the same Virginia. That is why the so-called "trick" of this smoking raw material has become the unexpected sourness and the incomparable smell of dried grass, giving off incense and finiamim. Oriental tobacco is present in small quantities in English-made tobacco blends such as English Mixture or Oriental Mixture.

"Kentucky"

The Kentucky variety is nothing special, just because it is nothing more than Burleigh processed in an unusual way. It is produced in the USA (Kentucky), Malaysia and other countries of the world. Kentucky differs from Burleigh in that it is dried not by solar drying, but by fire. Naturally, soot settles on the leaf blades of the kentakka, but its smell is less pronounced than that of the same latakia. Nevertheless, it can be distinguished and remembered, as, mixing with the natural aroma of kentakki, the soot gives the tobacco a peculiar shade.

This variety is distinguished by its high nicotine content, which is why it is added to the mixture in small doses.

Almost all tobacco cultivated for any smoking belongs to two types: Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana rustica, or their hybrids. In total, more than 100 varieties of tobacco are cultivated, but they all belong to the above types.

In the vast majority of cases, pipe tobacco is consumed as a mixture of different varieties. The pipe mix consists of basic (so-called base or raw) varieties of tobacco or their varieties and seasonings from other types of tobacco. Two varieties are used for the production of pipe tobacco: Virginia and Burley, both of which are of the Nicotiana tabacum species. The base of regular pipe tobacco consists of a mixture of these varieties in varying proportions, or one of them. Seasonings are added to the base of tobacco in different proportions: other varieties of tobacco grown in different places, having undergone various preliminary preparations and, as a result, having a different taste and aroma.

The accepted name does not speak of the variety (as already indicated, one way or another, all varieties of tobacco cultivated for smoking are a kind of tobacco ordinary), but about the totality of the variety of the tobacco variety, its place of origin and the method of its production. At the same time, some tobaccos are combined into groups according to the place of their cultivation, which implies their similarity in taste and aromatic qualities, resulting from similar natural conditions and methods of tobacco processing.

Besoeki:

a cigar-type tobacco variety, also known as Bezuki, grown primarily in Indonesia. Reaches the best characteristics on the plantations of the island of Java. In cigar production, it is used as a wrapper. It is often part of the Dutch Cavendish flavor group.

Brazilia:

strong tobacco, also known under the Flor Fina trademark. Used extensively in conjunction with the Java and Kentuky flavors.

Burley:

a tobacco variety bred on the basis of the White Burley mutation obtained in 1864 in the American state, which became the basis of American blends. The leaf is smaller than that of Virginia tobacco, reddish-brown in color, fleshy, spongy, and absorbs aromatic additives well. It has a low sugar content, therefore, during processing, it is sometimes saturated with flavorings based on honey, molasses, vanilla sugars or glucose, fructose. It burns slowly, while smoking it has a characteristic aroma with nutty, caramel and chocolate notes. Most often it undergoes primary processing by the air drying method.

Carolina:

Virginian type tobacco from South Carolina. Large-leaved, sweet, with a slight sourness, it is distinguished by characteristic fruity notes in taste and aroma.

Cavendish:

tobacco got its name in honor of the English sea captain, who, in order to save space during transportation, once decided to tamp tobacco in rum barrels. Upon arrival in England, the barrels were opened and found that the crushed tobacco, saturated with the smell of rum, repeatedly heated in the hot tropics and cooled during storms, had become much better and more aromatic. Essentially, this is a tobacco (or a blend of tobaccos) that has been fermented twice or twice to reduce the nicotine content of the leaves. Freed from some unwanted ingredients, they acquire an exceptionally mild taste and delicate aroma. A distinction is made between American-style Cavendishes, usually air-dried Burley varieties, cooked with a lot of molasses and flavors and treated with high pressure steam; Dutch blends - Cavendish, usually consisting of American, Puerto Rican and Indonesian tobaccos, which mature quickly in special fermentation chambers at carefully controlled temperature, pressure and humidity under the influence of catalytic additives; spicy aged Danish Cavendishes from Virginia and Burley tobaccos; and natural Cavendishes, most often from Virginia tobaccos, whose preparation process resembles the processing of Perique tobacco. During processing, the leaves are repeatedly pressed, shifted, steamed and dried until they lose a significant part of nicotine, proteins and starch. Some manufacturers press at high temperatures. Dark Cavendish - Black Cavendish is an integral part of many English, Scottish and Danish tobacco blends.

Cigar leaf:

flavored tobaccos used in blends of the French, Swiss and Dutch flavor groups. The most prized tobaccos are from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Nakaragua, Honduras, Ecuador, Sumatra, Java, Jamaica, Mexico, Cameroon, the Philippines, American tobaccos from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio and Georgia. In pipe blends, as a rule, they are combined with other cigar varieties of tobacco.

Dark Fired:

a close relative of Virginia tobacco, but darker, more sweet and more aromatic. It is sometimes used with aromatic herbs.

Dubec:

Asian small-leaf tobacco. Depending on the microclimate, agricultural technology and processing method, it can give raw materials of different aromaticity. Grown mainly in Turkey, it is also cultivated in Macedonia, Crimea and the black soil of the Krasnodar Territory.

Havana:

a variety of Cuban tobacco with the smell of famous cigars. It is also used for pipe tobacco blends.

Izmir:

tobacco from Turkey, from the Aegean coast. It has a low nicotine content, a high sugar content and an exceptional aroma. Izmir-type Greek tobaccos are known as Smirna.

Java:

cigarette-type tobacco, not very strong, is often used in pipe blends in combination with Brazilian varieties. Burns evenly. The most important component of the Dutch Cavendish.

Kentucky:

a large-leaved variety, developed in the state of Kentucky, stronger and darker, dried by smoke, with a smell of dried plums. It is so strong that no more than 20% is added to the mixture.

Latakia:

Asian tobacco cultivated in Cyprus and Syria (Latakia is a port city in Syria). Plants are low (12-15 centimeters), small-leaved, unlike other varieties, when harvesting, not individual leaves are cut off, but the whole plant at the root. Smoke-dried sawdust of hard wood (most often oak, myrtle and cypress) takes on a dark, almost black color, which gives the classic English tobacco blends their characteristic smell. Syrian latakia is characterized by a richer flavor and aroma. Tobacco of the same type, depending on the microclimate, agricultural technology and processing method, may differ in properties. The difference between Cypriot and Syrian latakia is also determined by the different composition of the sawdust used in the processing of tobacco leaves.

Macedonia Bright:

small-leaved light tobacco, which brings a sweetish nutty flavor to the mixture. Grown in Greece, Bulgaria and the countries of the former Yugoslavia. It goes well with Latakia tobacco.

Maduro:

air-cured dark brown tobacco leaves, naturally fermented for a long time. Most often they are used as coverslips for cigars and cigarillos, as well as in combination with other tobaccos in pipe blends.

Manila:

a variety of cigar tobacco grown in the Philippine Islands.

Maryland:

tobacco grown in the US state of Maryland. Light, light, air-dried. It is considered neutral in taste and smell, due to which it became the basis of many flavored tobacco blends, burns well.

Oriental:

this is the name for the varieties of tobacco cultivated in the Balkans, in the countries of the Black Sea region and the Mediterranean region (English oriental - eastern, Asian). Most often they have oval and arrow-shaped small leaves of yellow-green, olive or light brown color. Traditionally, they undergo primary processing by drying in the sun, in the open air. a tobacco variety named for the oldest British colony on the American continent. It is a large-leaved and sweet variety - the basis of most tachac mixtures, although it is smoked in its pure form, without the introduction of other ingredients. Recently, to speed up the technological process, drying in chambers is increasingly replaced by steam treatment, but such tobaccos are not used in pipe tobacco blends. The golden leaves of the tobacco of the Virginia varieties dried in a fire tube are called Gold Virginia.
