Arugula: the best varieties

Arugula is one of the types of salad.

This green plant in the wild can be found in many hot countries, but arugula began to be cultivated in the Mediterranean.

Another name for this salad culture is eruka. It belongs to the cabbage family, so turnips, radishes, radishes, horseradish, cabbage can be considered relatives of arugula.

In Russia, eruka began to spread along with the popularity of Italian and Mediterranean culinary dishes, because it is an invariable component of most salads, pasta, risotto, pizza, seasonings and sauces.

How to properly grow arugula in Russia, and which variety of this outlandish plant is better to choose - everything is in our article.

What are the differences between arugula varieties

Eruka bushes in their structure resemble lettuce bushes: the lower leaves are collected in rosettes, the upper ones are covered with a small fluff or glossy, the shape of the leaves depends on the variety, it can be round with smooth edges or elongated with a wavy, zigzag edge.

Stems are slightly pubescent, even, their height reaches 30-60 cm. Inflorescences are rare, the shade of flowers can be white, yellow, purple. Arugula is considered a good honey plant, bees and other pollinating insects love it.

The flavors of eruka leaves largely depend on the variety of the plant. But the general notes are the same - it is nut and mustard. The taste of greens is spicy, slightly bitter, with sourness.

Eruka can add spice to any dish, it can be added not only to sauces and seasonings, arugula is used to decorate sandwiches and snacks, it is added to soups and stews, it is an excellent filling for a pie.

Important! To keep the arugula leaves not too bitter, the bushes need to be watered very often.

The fruits of arugula are oval-shaped seed pods, in which small peas are located in two rows - seeds of a brown or brown shade.

Seeds appear quite quickly - 3 weeks after the appearance of the first shoots. They can be harvested and sown immediately, as arugula can be grown throughout the season - from April to the end of summer.

The growing season of arugula is very short - from 25 to 35 days. After this period, the leaves become too hard and no longer fit for human consumption. By the time of ripening, the leaf reaches a length of about 10 cm. Eruki varieties are divided into early maturing and mid-maturing.

Variety "Dikovina"

This arugula can be attributed to the mid-season varieties - the greens ripen by about the 30th day after sowing the seeds into the soil.

The height of the plant is about 20 cm, the stem of the eruka of this variety is even, slightly pubescent. The lower part is a rosette made of lyre-shaped leaves.

Arugula "Curiosity" blooms with small cream-colored inflorescences.

The variety is distinguished by high taste characteristics, therefore it is often used to prepare a wide variety of dishes.

Variety "Arrows of Cupid"

One of the most popular among gardeners and culinary specialists is the Eruki variety. This arugula is mid-season - the leaves ripen by the 35th day after the first shoots appear.

Stems of this type of salad greens can be up to 30 cm in height, straight and smooth.

The leaves are collected in rosettes, the shape of the leaves is carved, they are long and narrow. Inflorescences of the variety "Arrows of Cupid" can be recognized by their characteristic yellow tint.

The bushes of this variety of arugula are a bit like dandelions.

Variety "Olivetta"

Arugula belongs to the early maturing varieties - the growing season is only three weeks. Bushes are straight, even, their height does not exceed 15-20 cm. The leaves are lyre-shaped, slightly oval, painted in a deep green color.

It is possible to distinguish the greens of the Olivetta variety by their characteristic, slightly bitter aftertaste and pronounced nutty aroma. These taste qualities are very highly appreciated by culinary experts; arugula of the "Olivetta" variety gives the dishes a special piquancy.

Variety "Rocket"

This type of eruki also ripens very quickly - just 20-23 days after the first sprouts have broken out of the ground, you can harvest arugula.

The arugula bushes are low - only 20 cm, the leaves are collected in rosettes, the shape of the leaves of the variety resembles feathers - they have carved, slightly rounded edges.

The leaves are painted in a dark green shade.

The taste of this greenery also has such a valuable nutty flavor; arugula of the "Rocket" variety can turn any bland dish into a culinary masterpiece.

Variety "Victoria"

An early ripe variety of arugula, ripening in just 20-25 days after sowing seeds in the beds. Bushes are formed by straight stems and rosettes of oval leaves. In height, the bushes of arugula variety "Victoria" do not exceed 15-20 cm.

This eruka is especially appreciated for the extremely high content of vitamins in delicate leaves.

Variety "Poker"

An early variety of arugula with a growing season of only three weeks. After this period of time, you can harvest healthy greens.

The leaves of this variety are large, long, painted in a rich green hue. Eruka blooms with cream-colored flowers, the variety reaches a maximum height of 20 cm.

A distinctive feature of the variety is a slightly sweetish taste with mustard notes.

A characteristic feature of the arugula variety is a mustard-nutty flavor, which is especially valuable in cooking. This eruka will be great for sale in shops and markets!

Variety "Spartak"

An early variety, the growing season is only 19-25 days. The height of the bushes can reach 18-20 cm. Eruka of the "Spartak" variety is unique for its dietary composition, it contains the maximum amount of essential oils and vitamins.

Arugula of this variety can be grown in heated greenhouses, this will allow you to harvest greenery all year round.

How to grow arugula

In the climate of Russia, salad culture can be grown in several ways:

  1. In the southern regions or the temperate climate of the middle lane, the method of planting seeds directly on the beds is quite suitable. In order for the seeds to hatch and the first shoots to appear, the earth must warm up to 9-16 degrees. This temperature in the central part of Russia is established mainly by mid-April - early May. During this period, arugula seeds are sown for open ground. The best varieties for such plantings are early maturing. After three weeks, when the first plantings of eruki are ripe, you can harvest the seeds and sow the arugula again. So, during one season it turns out to grow several harvests of salad greens, and always have fresh arugula on the table.
  2. In the northern regions, where springs are lingering and cold, the ripening of eruka can be accelerated by planting seeds in protected ground. The beds are prepared in advance (two to three weeks in advance), they dig up the earth, remove weeds, spill the soil with boiling water for disinfection. Seeds are sown in the same way as in open ground - with an interval between rows of 35-40 cm, and between seeds - 2-3 cm. Arugula is grown in greenhouses and hotbeds all year round.
  3. The seedling method is suitable for those who want to speed up the maturation of green salad even more. For this, the seeds are sown in cups, pots or boxes. The germination of arugula seeds is quite high, so there is no need to soak and pre-germinate them. The seeds are deepened no more than 1.5 cm into the ground (ordinary garden soil or any seedling mixture that is sold in agricultural stores will do). After 4-5 days, the first shoots already appear. When there are two true leaves on the plants, they are dived into peat or disposable cups. The grown seedlings are transferred to the beds or to the greenhouse, arugula should be transplanted together with an earthen lump. The distance between the bushes should be at least 15-20 cm.
  4. Another way to get delicious greens is to grow arugula on a windowsill or balcony. This plant is very unpretentious, eruka does not need special conditions and complex care.Greens grow at a temperature of 18-20 degrees, it needs to be watered well and ripe leaves should be cut off in time. Seeds are sown in pots or boxes at a certain interval. After 25-30 days, you can harvest the first crop, and in order to feast on the herbs for a longer time, arugula seeds are sown again in other pots.

Important! If arugula was sown with seeds, it must be thinned out.

Do this when the plants have two leaves. About 15-20 cm are left between adjacent sprouts, the rest are pulled out (they can be used for salads and other dishes).

Gardeners argue that too thick plantings impair the taste and nutritional characteristics of arugula - the plants lack water and trace elements from the soil.

Beneficial features

Regardless of the variety, arugula has a number of useful and even medicinal properties. Eruka is a good "doctor" for many diseases:

  • stomach or intestinal ulcers;
  • predisposition to cancer;
  • some diseases of the kidneys and bladder;
  • skin diseases and hematomas;
  • reduced immunity;
  • anemia;
  • lack of iodine;
  • vitamin deficiency and scurvy.

Attention! With great care, arugula should be eaten by allergy sufferers.

These greens are high in essential oils and flavonoids, which significantly increases the risk of developing an allergic reaction. Also, caution should be exercised by pregnant and lactating mothers.

Such a large number of medicinal properties is due to the rich composition of arugula. It contains not only flavonoids and alkaloids that prevent the development of cancerous tumors and other serious diseases, but also a lot of vitamins and minerals, such as:

  • calcium;
  • potassium;
  • iodine;
  • iron;
  • magnesium;
  • steroids;
  • acetic and malic acid;
  • mustard oil;
  • vitamins of group C and B.

Due to the fact that arugula has a very pleasant spicy taste, it can be added to almost any dish. So getting all the useful vitamins and minerals will not be difficult.

Important! In order for a mature arugula to contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals, the plant must be properly grown, observing all the rules and regulations.

Rules for caring for arugula plantings

Caring for arugula plantations, in principle, is simple. But non-observance of simple rules will inevitably lead to a deterioration in the taste of these salad greens.

In order for arugula to have a delicate taste and spicy aroma, the following conditions must be observed when growing it:

  1. Arugula seeds of any variety can be bought in specialized stores, or you can collect them yourself from your own harvest.
  2. The optimal temperature for growing arugula is considered to be a range of 14-18 degrees. Based on this, and you need to choose the method of planting greens and the place of its cultivation.
  3. Some varieties of arugula seedlings can withstand temperatures as low as -7 degrees. However, the delicate greens will not endure prolonged frosts. If there is a risk of frost, it is better to cover the eruka with foil or agrofibre (at least overnight).
  4. You need to water the beds often, almost every day. The soil near the arugula should always be slightly damp. If this rule is not followed, the greens become bitter and turn into color.
  5. The looseness of the soil is also important. After each watering, the beds must be puffed with a hoe, so the roots of the eruka will receive the necessary amount of air and oxygen.
  6. You need to fertilize the bushes once or twice during the entire growing season. Considering that arugula fully ripens in three to four weeks, it cannot be fertilized with mineral and organic preparations. Toxins will accumulate in the leaves, which will not have time to decompose in such a short period. Eruka needs to be fertilized with a nitrogen composition, bringing it to the beds along with watering. Chicken droppings or rotted cow dung dissolved in water are also suitable.
  7. Only very nutritious soils are allowed not to fertilize. If arugula does not receive all the necessary trace elements, its composition will also become scarce - it will no longer be so useful.
  8. The soil for growing eruki must have a high calcium content, so the soil is lime before sowing the seeds.
  9. When growing arugula, it is important to observe the crop rotation: the greens are best planted in the place where pumpkin crops, legumes, carrots, and potatoes grew last season. However, you should avoid beds that have been growing cabbage and other cruciferous crops for three years. Arugula and these plants have the same diseases that can be transmitted through contaminated soil.
  10. It is necessary to cut off mature eruka leaves on time, otherwise they will become tough and bitter in taste. You can determine maturity by the length of the leaf - optimally, it should reach 10 cm.

All varieties of arugula perfectly tolerate the domestic climate, therefore they can be grown simply in the beds. In order not to go to the supermarket for greens in winter, you can plant an eruka on a windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.

Arugula - spicy gourmet bitterness

My love for arugula arose, as they say, not from the first try, but in several approaches. When I first tried arugula salad, it didn't impress me at all, quite the opposite.

However, I decided to grow these greens in my garden for my loved ones who are fans of the product.

And either I managed to taste its spicy taste, or the greens grown by my own hands were different from the purchased ones, but since then I finally and irrevocably fell in love with arugula.

And for those who are not yet familiar with these salad greens, my article will help you learn about some of the tricks of its cultivation, culinary recipes, as well as undeniable health benefits.

Arugula has a botanical name - Eruca sativa, the plant belongs to the extensive cruciferous family, and simply cabbage (Brassicaceae).

Under her usual name, she became known first in her homeland in the countries of the Western Mediterranean, and only then throughout the world. For a long time, only domestic birds feasted on arugula, since this plant was considered just a weed.

It is interesting that the Slavs also knew this plant and called it caterpillar, its other names are arugula, indau, mustard grass, walker, taramira, rocket salad.

Arugula is a one- or two-year-old plant that grows in the form of a root rosette of dissected leaves.

During flowering, slightly pubescent stems of the plant rise by 30-60 cm and end in a long cluster inflorescence with yellow or white-purple flowers.

Loved by bees and butterflies, it perfectly ties elongated pods with brownish seeds inside, similar to mustard seed. Seeds only take a month to ripen and can be harvested and sown again this season.

Beneficial features

This greens can be called a dietary product, since 100 g of arugula contains only 25 kcal.

It is also high in fiber, which helps you feel full quickly.

Using this product, you can increase immunity, improve the functioning of the nervous and digestive systems, as well as the condition of our nails, hair and skin in general.

This greens can be called a dietary product, since 100 g of arugula contains only 25 kcal.

It can be noted that in its composition arugula contains saturated fatty acids, vitamins A, C, PP, K, E, B5, B6, as well as monosaccharides, copper, manganese, selenium, potassium, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, iron, iodine, magnesium and calcium.

The most valuable quality of arugula can also be considered its effect as an aphrodisiac. But I want to draw your attention to the fact that, due to the high content of phytoncides, arugula should be very carefully used by pregnant women, lactating mothers and people prone to allergies.

The most delicious varieties

As I already said, arugula can be found one-year-old and two-year-old, therefore, the analysis of varieties will also be fairly divided into two categories.

The best annual varieties:

  • Poker - the earliest and most tested variety.It can be harvested within 20 days after germination.
  • Rococo - another early variety with a harvest 22 days after germination.
  • Arrows of Cupid - mid-season variety, the harvest of which can be on the table from the 35th day after germination.
  • Dikovina - a variety that takes an intermediate place between early and mid-season varieties. Its greens can be harvested already on the 25th day.

Two-year-old varieties have one important advantage - they hibernate under the snow and very quickly come out of hibernation on the first warm days, delighting us with very early greens.

Of the two-year-old varieties, Solitaire can be considered the best, which exhibits mid-season characteristics and gives greens 35–45 days after the first sprouting.

Growing

In the process of searching through trial and error for the optimal method of agricultural technology, I achieved that my own-grown arugula surpassed the store-bought arugula. I can immediately reassure you - the plant is not capricious, you just need to remember about a couple of moments, and success is guaranteed!

Sowing. To get greens as soon as possible, you can sow them in greenhouses at a very early date, or even sow them simply in pots on the windowsill.

It is sown in open ground when the soil warms up to 10 ° C, starting in mid-April. And then you can sow constantly, at intervals of 2-4 weeks, so that there are no interruptions in the receipt of greens.

The seeds are sown into grooves to a depth of 1.5 cm, leaving a row spacing of 40 cm.When the first true leaves appear at the seedlings, it is worth thinning out the plants and leaving a distance of about 5 cm between them.

Place and soil. Arugula feels better under the auspices of an openwork shade, or at least in shade from the midday scorching rays.

But at the same time, in shady areas, it grows stunted and almost does not develop, but in the sun it feels good.

It takes root on any garden soils, but especially readily develops on slightly acidic or calcified soils with a high calcium content.

Predecessors. And also remember that arugula belongs to the same family as cabbage, radish and radish, so you shouldn't sow it after these crops! It is best to alternate planting arugula with crops such as legumes, carrots, potatoes, pumpkin seeds and tomatoes.

Care. From the moment of sowing until you cut the last plant into a salad, do not forget about regular and abundant watering.

If you do not provide the proper water balance in the soil on which the arugula grows, its leaves will quickly coarse and will be very bitter.

Then it can be used only for preservation and in pickles.

If you do not provide the proper water balance in the soil on which the arugula grows, its leaves will quickly coarse and will be very bitter.

And I also want to warn you - arugula should be grown only as an environmentally friendly product, without the use of mineral fertilizers, and do not overdo it with organic matter, because this plant is prone to the accumulation of nitrates! That is why it is so important to grow it ourselves, and not buy greens of unknown quality in the markets or in stores.

Of all of the above, the key points are two: a place with shading and abundant watering. By observing only these two requirements, you will get the same delicate arugula that is served in the best Italian restaurants.

A couple of recipes

Before I share with you my favorite recipes, I will say that arugula can be used in a variety of ways. These greens can be not only an addition to dinner, but also a full-fledged independent dish.

Moreover, it is harmoniously combined with fish, meat and even seafood. It is added to stews, sandwiches, pizza, risottos, various sauces and cold snacks, as well as cottage cheese and even some desserts.

And her seeds, which she generously sets, make a great sauce like mustard.

According to my personal impressions, arugula is best "friends" with tomatoes, so I often cook the following dish, which is unpretentious in composition, but very interesting in taste.

Arugula salad with cherry tomatoes

For a bunch of fresh arugula, I take a generous handful of cherry tomatoes. Tear the arugula and cut the cherry into halves or quarters, depending on their size.

Season with salt, season with any vegetable oil to taste, but ideally olive oil, and be sure to squeeze out a thick slice of lemon, the juice of which will significantly enrich the final taste and aroma of the salad.

If you add sliced cucumber, fried pieces of chicken breast and cubes of crackers to the same salad, you get a full-fledged dish that does not require additions.

Salad with arugula, salmon and cranberries

Salad with arugula, salmon and cranberries

I love making this recipe in the cranberry season. Wash and tear a bunch of arugula, add a handful of chopped cherry tomatoes and a handful of cranberries, lightly salted salmon, cut into slices.

Season with a spoonful of balsamic vinegar and a spoonful of olive oil, salt and finish the dish with a scattering of pine nuts.

I managed to surprise more than one demanding guest with this delicacy.

If someone confidently declares that arugula is tasteless, I can definitely say that he just hasn't had time to taste it yet.

I assure you that as soon as this happens, you will forever become a fan of all kinds of dishes made from these healthy greens.

So I ask you all the welcome to the arugula lovers club - and see you soon on the open spaces of our blog!

Rocket salad plant - cultivation, useful properties, use in cooking

Arugula is a lettuce plant that is prized for its spicy, pungent taste. Growing arugula is not difficult. Like most salad plants, it grows very quickly. Mediterranean cuisine without arugula - and not cuisine at all.

In Italy, salads are unthinkable without it; it is generously flavored with pizza, pasta, all sorts of minestrone soups. In salads, Italians give arugula a place of the main ingredient.

But if the local gourmets have respected rucola since the times of Ancient Rome, then in Russia the spicy "Italian" was tasted, appreciated only recently, for a long time it was considered just a weed in our country.

Useful properties of arugula

Green arugula leaves are not only a table decoration, but also a storehouse of nutrients. There are vitamins, especially A, B9, C, trace elements - potassium, calcium, magnesium, iodine, iron and flavonoids.

The bioactive substances they contain have a beneficial effect on digestion, help to strengthen immunity, normalize water-salt metabolism, and reduce blood sugar levels.

American gastroenterologists even recommend rucola as a safe remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastritis and stomach ulcers. And also flowering arugula is a honey plant, bees love it very much.

In Slovenia, rucola is added to cheese cheburek. In Italy, it is used for pizza: usually arugula is placed shortly before the end of its preparation or immediately after that. It is also used as a pestle ingredient in addition to or as a substitute for basil.

As for the gastronomic merits of the spicy "Italian", then if someone tasted it, the food without its spicy, nut-pepper bitterness seems boring.

Therefore, its popularity among Russian gardeners and farmers is growing every year. Rucola is in great demand among restaurateurs, supermarkets, and vegetable markets.

For example, in Moscow, it is already in third place in popularity after traditional dill and parsley.

As a food plant, two of its types are popular - cultivated rucola (eruca sowing, indau sowing) and wild rucola (two-rowed thin-leaved and wild rocket). In Russia, the wild arugula is the most widespread, so we will talk about it.

Growing arugula

Arugula is a cold-resistant plant, usually early ripening, and is ready for use in early spring or in the first half of summer, when other vegetables are not yet ripe.

In the Kuban, it can be sown in March, because the most comfortable soil temperature, at which it germinates, is from 5 to 12 ° C. Arugula grows well on various types of soils practically throughout Russia.

It can be grown in open and protected ground by direct sowing of seeds or through seedlings. Step crops are carried out in 10-15 days.

Care consists in loosening row spacings, timely watering, mulching the rows with humus or low-lying peat.

If you want to grow lush greens of wild arugula earlier or faster, then I advise you to opt for the Solitaire variety - one of the most popular among Russian gardeners.

So, Solitaire. Variety of selection of the firm "Gavrish". It is early ripe, the beginning of the marketability begins 20-25 days after the emergence of shoots.

The rosette of leaves is half-raised, 15-18 cm in diameter, 18-20 cm high.

The leaf is very textured and picturesque - medium-sized, lyre-dissected with incisions along the edge, the surface is smooth, the color is green. The average weight of the outlet is 20-45 g. Productivity - 1.4-1.6 kg / m2.

Arugula is undemanding to soil. But nevertheless, planted in a light, fertile soil with a neutral reaction of the soil solution, it will thank you with a particularly rich harvest of high-quality greenery and will not accumulate nitrates.

In open ground, arugula seeds can be sown immediately after the snow melts until mid-August. The seeding rate is 30 g per 100 m2. The minimum temperature for seed germination is 9-10 ° C, the optimal temperature is 18-24 ° C. The maximum depth of sowing seeds is 3-4 cm.

The distance between plants in a row is 8-10 cm, between rows - 30-40 cm. As necessary, weeding, loosening of row spacings, as well as thinning of plants is carried out, since the seeds have an extended period of germination. The emergence of seedlings is possible throughout the growing season.

The plant does not require special lighting, grows well in the shade, but resists the aggressive sun by roughening the leaves, shooting. And yet - arugula must be watered in a timely manner, otherwise its leaves will be wormwood-bitter.

In greenhouses, rucola is grown on soils and by the method of flowing hydroponics.

When cultivating on salad lines, 30-35 seeds are sown in one standard pot for growing green crops. Shoots appear in 2-3 days. In the seedling department, the seedlings grow for 10-12 days, after which they are put on the line. The crop is harvested in 23-25 days.

Among the pests of wild arugula in the open field are cruciferous fleas, which are quite damaging to the leaves.

When infected with the fungus Peronospora parasitica, dark brown spots appear on the leaves. And the fungus Fusarium oxysporum causes chlorosis: the leaves of the diseased plant lose color, turn yellow, their vascular system appears with brown or black stripes.

Among the methods of dealing with the scourge are crop rotation, soil preparation, weed control.

Using arugula - what is it eaten with?

Fresh young leaves, wild arugula shoots give an exquisite spicy note to salads, pasta and beans dishes, cottage cheese or cheese snacks, just sprinkle boiled potatoes with arugula - it will acquire a new, unusual taste.

Arugula seeds are used in the preparation of hot mustard, and seed oil is used in canning vegetables.

Like any greens, rucola manifests itself most vividly when fresh: long heat treatment kills its taste and aroma, not to mention the vitamin set, so rucola is added to hot dishes at the end of cooking or to a ready-made dish.

Arugula greens can be stored in the refrigerator for several days without loss of quality.

Arugula: planting and care in the garden and at home

“What a delight this arugula is! Now I will plant every year! Tasty, unpretentious, frost-resistant! " - such praises can be heard from gardeners who already have a spicy oilseed crop - arugula. Planting and caring for it is actually minimal, and, in fact, this unusual green plant for us is worthy of planting it more often and more.

What is arugula or Indau

Rucola, photo:

Arugula is a type of spicy herb. belongs to the cruciferous family. originally from the Mediterranean, and now popular in many different countries. in my opinion, the taste of this salad is unlike any other known spice.

Few people know that in the Caucasus and the Crimea, wild arugula or apex (other names are sowing caterpillar, rocket salad) has long been growing like a weed. This is the kind

belonging to a different genus of the cruciferous family, but its basic properties are very similar to arugula or Indau sowing. Indau or arugula is also found wild in many countries.

These salad crops, despite their southern origin, feel great in our middle lane.

There are differences between them: arugula is an annual plant, a two-row plant is biennial, its rosette overwinters, the next year it gives seeds and dies.

Thin-leaved two-row:

Tasty herbs have become popular in Russia relatively recently - less than ten years have passed.

Today, many cultivars of Indau and two-rowed fine-leaved cultivars have been created. the latter is sharper in taste. The leaves of the two-row are smaller and more pointed. there are no special differences in care. since in the gardens the two-rowed is grown as an annual.

Growing arugula outdoors

  • Landing time - late April-early May, depending on the weather. Then you can plant even until August, since the varieties are mostly early, ripen, give full-fledged greens 25-30 days after germination.

    Arugula seeds sprout quickly - 3-5 days.

  • The landing site is without shade and bright sun, for example, in the morning there is lighting from the east, in the afternoon there is a light shadow.

    I plant arugula in containers I built from 7-liter water-based paint buckets. Of course, there are drainage holes and a quarter of the bucket is filled with expanded clay.

  • I take light soil, but loam is also possible; experience has shown that this is not so important. Since autumn I add a little ash, cover it.
  • In the spring, I loosen the ground a little, then I compact it slightly.

    I plant seeds, sprinkle them with a centimeter layer of soil, water them a little from a watering can. Since the soil is wet in spring, irrigation may not be required due to the situation. I cover the bucket with spunbond from above, sticking its edges from below with the same bucket.

    This saves from possible freezing, also from drying out the soil, pests. Very comfortably!

These buckets can be placed in various places in the garden. This will make the garden more comfortable, besides, the containers can be easily rearranged to the place you like and green.

I do not use fertilizers when growing arugula, since the use of nitrogen will lead to the formation of nitrates.

Planting on the garden bed is done in the same way. The distance between the rows is 20 cm,
plants - 5 cm. When thinning, greens are used for their intended purpose: salads, seasonings, additives to the former. second courses.

Care consists of watering. quite frequent. it is carried out by sprinkling or in
aisles. The more often you water. the softer the taste. during drought, arugula begins to taste bitter, shoots faster, gives seeds, but becomes inedible.

Further care is thinning. weeding as usual.

Growing Indau through seedlings

Seed planting time is mid-April. I put them in 100 gram coffee cups. For the May holidays, I plant it on the garden bed, cutting along the wall near the pot.

During the cultivation of seedlings, I constantly moisten the soil from the sprayer. Indau seedlings will withstand frosts down to -5, but it is better to arrange a temporary shelter for the first time after planting.

How to grow arugula on a windowsill

  • The windowsill is located on the sunny side.
  • Purchased land is used for vegetables. There are no pests, causative agents of many diseases of cabbage cruciferous crops.
  • We prepare the container, make holes, put in drainage, fill it with earth. The depth is 10-15 cm.The soil layer does not reach the edges by 3-4 cm.
  • Let the arugula be early maturing.
  • On the soil moistened with a sprayer, lay out the seeds 2x2 cm, sprinkle with a layer of earth 1 cm, moisten again.
  • We cover the container with a lid. We put it on the windowsill.
  • In 3-5 days there will be shoots.

    now we ventilate the container every day, and on the 5th day we remove the lid.

What kind of care? - only watering from a sprayer, then as usual. excess water from the sump
pour out.

Growing arugula on a windowsill in winter, as you can see, is within the power of anyone.After a month, we cut off young leaves.

Poor lighting, rare watering - such errors of care are fraught with the accumulation of nitrates, a bitter taste.

Arugula is so unpretentious that in cool weather or light frost it can
stay on the balcony or loggia, of course. within reasonable limits. it will even improve its taste and benefits.

Arugula pests

Indau contains a lot of essential oil that repels diseases and pests. However, the cruciferous flea, the cabbage fly, bothers her the most. Tip: Cover with a nonwoven fabric immediately after planting. You can sprinkle the aisles with dry mustard.

Rucola: useful properties and contraindications for use

The benefits of arugula are as follows:

  • Immunity increases, as it contains a lot of vitamin C.
  • Cancer prevention, in this rucola competes with broccoli cabbage.
  • Reduces blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
  • The metabolism, the work of the stomach and intestines improves.
  • Strengthening effect on the nervous system.
  • Arugula is useful for pregnant women, there are many trace elements.
  • Helps to lose weight, since the calorie content of arugula is only 25 kcal.
  • In cosmetology, rucola oil is used for masks on the skin and hair.
  • From ancient times to now, people use arugula salad as an aphrodisiac. that is, stimulating libido.

Contraindications of arugula are rare - with excessive consumption of it, an excess of nitrates, allergic reactions may occur: rash, nausea, upset stools.
The use of arugula is varied. Most often it is used fresh for salads, garnishes for meat, fish, legumes.

Moreover, the leaves are not cut, but torn by hand, or served whole. When we live in a dacha, not a single dish is practically complete without Indau. It fascinates from year to year and still seems unusual with every use of the taste of walnuts, olives, the aroma of mustard, which arugula gives us.

Sort "Solitaire"

Refers to mid-season varieties, full ripening of greens occurs only 35-40 days after the seeds were sown. The leaves of the plant are dark green, their shape is dissected, elongated.

This plant is very unpretentious, eruka does not need special conditions and complex care. Greens grow at a temperature of 18-20 degrees, it needs to be watered well and ripe leaves should be cut off in time.

  • stomach or intestinal ulcers;
  • predisposition to cancer;
  • some diseases of the kidneys and bladder;
  • skin diseases and hematomas;
  • reduced immunity;
  • anemia;
  • lack of iodine;

  • calcium;
  • potassium;
  • iodine;
  • iron;
  • magnesium;
  • steroids;
  • acetic and malic acid;
  • mustard oil;
  • vitamins of group C and B.

Due to the fact that arugula has a very pleasant spicy taste, it can be added to almost any dish.So getting all the useful vitamins and minerals will not be difficult.

Important! In order for a mature arugula to contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals, the plant must be properly grown, observing all the rules and regulations.

Rules for caring for arugula planting

The most valuable quality of arugula can also be considered its action as an aphrodisiac.

  • Poker - the earliest and most tested variety. It can be harvested within 20 days after germination.

Growing

In the process of searching through trial and error for the optimal method of agricultural technology, I achieved that my own grown arugula surpassed the store-bought arugula.

If you do not ensure the proper water balance in the soil on which the arugula grows, its leaves will quickly coarsen and will become very bitter.

Then it can be used only for preservation and in pickles.

If you do not ensure the proper water balance in the soil on which the arugula grows, its leaves will quickly coarsen and will become very bitter.

At the same time, it is harmoniously combined with fish, meat and even seafood.

This is a recipe I love to make in the cranberry season.

So I ask you all to join the arugula lovers club - and see you soon on our blog!

As necessary, weeding, loosening of row spacings, as well as thinning of plants is carried out, since the seeds have an extended period of germination.The emergence of seedlings is possible throughout the growing season.

“What a charm this arugula is!

This is the kind

belonging to a different genus of the cruciferous family, but in its basic properties is very similar to arugula or Indau sowing.

Today, many cultivars of Indau and two-rowed fine-leaved have been created. the latter is sharper in taste. The leaves of the two-rowed are smaller and more pointed. there are no special differences in care. since in the gardens the two-rowed is grown as an annual.

Growing arugula outdoors

  • Landing time - late April-early May, depending on the weather. Then you can plant even until August, since the varieties are mostly early, ripen, give full-fledged greens 25-30 days after germination.

    Arugula seeds sprout quickly - 3-5 days.

  • The landing site is without shade and bright sun, for example, lighting from the east in the morning, light shadow in the afternoon.

Since the soil is wet in spring, irrigation may not be required depending on the situation.

Rucola salad, photo:

- only watering from a sprayer, then as usual. excess water from the sump
pour out.

Growing arugula on a windowsill in winter, as you can see, is within the power of anyone. After a month, we cut off young leaves.

Growing methods

In cooking, two types of plants are used: cultivated (sowing) and wild (wild rocket).

Greenhouse cultivation

Small brown seeds are collected in an oblong pod.

Growing a crop is similar to growing regular spinach. You can plant arugula outdoors, in a greenhouse, and even indoors on a light windowsill. Seeds are sown in open ground in mid - late spring.

  • Arugula is very similar to growing spinach. It is early ripening, cold-resistant and moisture-loving. Seedlings can withstand night frosts up to - 6 degrees. To obtain products at different times, arugula is sown at intervals of 15 - 20 days. Unlike spinach, it can be grown in both spring, summer and fall. Arugula is sown in two ways - ordinary and ribbon. With the ordinary method, 25 - 35 cm is left between the rows.With the tape method, the distance between the ribbons is maintained at 15 - 20 cm, between the rows - 50 cm. Between the plants in a row, 5 - 7 cm are left. 1 - 2 cm on light sandy soils. After planting, the soil is watered with warm water and covered with plastic wrap. This is in order for the seeds to sprout faster. Shoots of this salad appear on the 5th - 6th day. The film should be removed immediately after they appear. After another two weeks, you can already pluck the greens of young plants. Arugula care consists in timely loosening of row spacings, watering and weeding. It is important that the soil under the plants is always moist and loose. The formation of a crust on the top layer of the soil must not be allowed, as this can cause the leaves to turn yellowish and coarse. In hot and dry weather, the rucola quickly enters the flowering phase, which makes it non-edible.
  • Arugula, Indau, Eruka are one and the same plant. It has long been known in many countries, where it is widely used in folk medicine, cooking, and cosmetology. Planting a plant

The crop is not particularly picky about the composition of the soil, but grows best in slightly acidic soils, which can be calcareous so that the lettuce has enough calcium. But it has one significant drawback in growing - it quickly runs wild. Planting should be carried out in sunny areas, otherwise the greens grind, lose their presentation and delicate taste.

The arugula beds must be loosened well. To have a high-quality harvest with tasty and juicy leaves, you must leave at least 25 cm between the bushes. Arugula is grown in greenhouses, greenhouses or just in an open garden.

In greenhouses it can be grown at least all year round, the main thing is to maintain the temperature at least 16 degrees and illuminate it when there is a lack of sun. How to prepare the soil:

  • loosen to a depth of 20 cm, completely clean it of weeds;
  • carry out additional deep loosening a couple of weeks before planting.

Seeds are sown on the beds, maintaining a distance of about 35-38 cm between them, and deepened by 2 cm.

Planting arugula

Landing in open ground carried out from May until almost the end of the summer season. Choose areas in the light, but not in the sun itself.Arugula dislikes both excessive shading and bright sun. In open ground, seeds are sown in almost the same way as in greenhouses: to a depth of 1.5 cm, with a distance between rows of 40 cm, and between plants at 4-5 cm. Too dense plantings are thinned out when the first two leaves appear. With expected frosts, the plants are covered with a film, removing them for the warm daytime.

Arugula care and fertilization

Arugula, like any salad crops, requires regular watering, weeding, and loosening. Arugula care tips:

  • the best temperature for growing arugula in a summer cottage is 17-20 degrees;
  • you need to water the greens at least every other day so that the leaves are juicy and not bitter;
  • as soon as it grows to about 10-12 cm, you can cut the crop;
  • regular "fluffing", loosening and weeding promotes good plant growth.

Most plants respond well to feeding and fertilization, but you should be careful with arugula.

Attention! Arugula cannot be fertilized with chemicals, since this salad very well accumulates all chemicals and harmful substances. Then it will not be possible to eat it.

You can feed the seedlings with mullein, chicken droppings, breeding them 12-15 times. Watering is carried out at the same time.

Plant propagation

Arugula can be propagated using seedlings. Sow in spring in cups (2-4 seeds) or in larger pots (up to 35 seeds). Reproduction of lettuce is a painstaking business, it is necessary to harden the sprouted seedlings. When they grow up, they are transferred into open ground with a lump of earth from a pot or glass.

The air should warm up by the time of landing so that it is not colder than +9 degrees. In order to harvest a good harvest until autumn, you need to protect the seedlings at the transplantation stage - from frost and fog.

Arugula diseases, pests

Caring for arugula also includes protecting against pests and diseases. The combination of all care options gives an excellent result. In general, the culture is resistant to pests, as it contains essential oils, but fungal diseases can still affect this plant.

Pests damaging arugula:

  • cabbage moth - digging of the earth is necessary, sampling of pupae, spraying with an infusion of wormwood, karbofos;
  • cruciferous fleas - digging, spraying with trichlorometaphos-3;
  • fungus - removing weeds and maintaining crop rotation.

Advice. If the fungus has infected most of the plants, it is useless to treat them, you need to change the bed for another, thoroughly treating the soil before that.

Combination with other plants

It is important for the gardener to observe the crop rotation. You need to alternate planting arugula with legumes, pumpkin crops. After this salad, it is good to plant potatoes and carrots on the ridges. Only cruciferous plants are not planted in order to avoid infection with common pests and diseases.

Arugula harvest

In the fall, you need to prepare the beds, in the spring, dig them up again and "shake" the ground. Good soil preparation and proper care will give excellent results later.

In conclusion, it should be noted that arugula greens are very fragile, so you need to harvest carefully so that the leaves do not lose their presentation, and the upper buds are not damaged. This can be done with your hands or with a sharp knife. The lower dark leaves are cut off.

Agrotechnics for growing arugula

and the best varieties

Arugula is grown both in the open field and in the greenhouse, by seedling and non-seedling methods. The culture can grow on any soil, however, more lush and tasty greens are obtained on light fertile ones with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. Acidic soils require liming.

Below we will consider the features and subtleties agrotechnics for growing arugula, as well as learn about the most popular and common types and varieties.

Arugula care in the open field is not much different from a similar process at home. However, some distinctive nuances are still present.

Arugula - a one- or biennial plant with succulent leaves belongs to the Cabbage family.

The most popular varieties of arugula are:

Poker and Rococo - have large lyre-pinnate leaves and white flowers with purple veins.

Euphoria and Rocket - (refer to the so-called wild arugula) the leaves are oblong, notched-toothed, and the flowers are yellow.

The best predecessors are legumes, pumpkin seeds, early potatoes, and tomatoes. The plant is returned to its original place or after related crops not earlier than after 3-4 years.

The term for sowing seeds in open ground: from April to mid-August, every 10-15 days. The sowing depth is no more than 1–1.5 cm, the distance between the rows is 30–40 cm. The seedlings are thinned out in the phase of 1–2 true leaves, leaving 5–6 cm between them. Arugula is not sown in the heat, as the plants move quickly into the arrow. If you nevertheless decide to sow it at this time, choose a semi-shaded place.

Arugula is a cold-resistant culture. The optimum temperature for growth and development is + 16-18 ° C. After germination, it is advisable to mulch the soil (with hay or cut grass) - this reduces the dose of watering and loosening. Water the plants with fine sprinkling or saturate the soil by flooding (the hose is placed in the aisles). With a lack of moisture, leaf growth is delayed, the plant blooms quickly, and the taste deteriorates - the leaves begin to taste bitter.

Seedlings are fed 1-2 times with nitrogen fertilizer (10 g / 10 l of water), mullein solution (1:10) or chicken droppings (1:15). Fresh manure should not be applied, since a lot of nitrates accumulates in the leaves. Usually the culture ripens on the 25-50th day from germination. The yield of leaves with a single harvest is 1.5–2.5 kg / m2.

Cleaning

Before the formation of peduncles, most of the plants are cut, a few bushes can be left for seeds. Arugula is removed selectively - often entirely (when large rosettes are formed), sometimes individual leaves are cut off. It is impossible to be late in harvesting - after discarding the peduncles, the taste deteriorates. Only regular cutting will allow you to get greens with a delicate taste. It is best to use arugula immediately, fresh. You can store the plucked leaves in the refrigerator for several days by wrapping the bundle with cling film or foil.
