Someone will say that there are no such plants in nature. And he will be wrong, since we are talking about real-life flowers, which are called musk roses. Breeding history

At the beginning of the 20th century, Peter Lambert (breeder from Germany) bred "Trier" - a variety that became the first related to musk roses. The selection result not only shocked ordinary florists, but also impressed the specialists. Lambert bred a very fragrant, profusely (and repeatedly) blooming rose. Other breeders have also taken up the development of new varieties. For example, Lambert's assistants, the Benthall spouses, created the “ballerina” variety, Joseph Pemberton (England) authored such varieties as “Cornelia”, “Penelope”, a huge Lens Rosen nursery was opened by Louis Lene (Belgium) where for many years and develop new varieties of magnificent aromatic plants. Musk roses are the name for a fairly extensive range of hybrids, such as:

• phoenecia,
• moschata;
• mulliganii;
• arvensis;

The flowering period is accompanied by minor rest breaks, which allows gardeners to admire the splendor of the bushes throughout the season.

The exquisite aroma of these roses should be noted separately. It is very strong, with floral-fruity notes, with a bit of musk - a substance appreciated in perfumery. Moreover, in order to feel it, you do not need to bend over to the flowers, a musk rose (you can see the photo below), even one, is able to fill the entire garden with a magnificent aroma. The most aromatic varieties include "Cornelia", "Felicia", "Daphnia".

Where is the best place to plant the bushes?

We have already said that it is better to admire these flowers from a distance, so they should be planted in the very last row of the flower garden. Varieties with a strong aroma will be appropriate next to a gazebo or garden benches. In the foreground, flower beds can be grown, perhaps, only musk roses of the "ballerina" variety.

The flowers are small (no more than four centimeters in diameter), fragrant, painted in a pale pink color, collected in large inflorescences (up to 100 buds).

The variety is distinguished by long and abundant flowering. When pruned correctly, it blooms again.

Schwerin

The variety is distinguished by vigorous and spreading bushes with large glossy and dense leaves. The flowers are semi-double, medium-sized (up to five centimeters). They are painted in a rich cherry-red color and are collected in small inflorescences (up to eight flowers). The buds are pointed at the edges, elongated.

Robin hood

A very showy plant with crimson flowers. It grows up to one and a half meters in height. Width - about one hundred and twenty centimeters, wider specimens are much less common. The variety is resistant to disease. Although the flowers of this species are rather small, they easily compensate for this "disadvantage" by blooming in large clusters throughout the season.

Flowers can be of two types: semi-double and non-double. All of them are painted in cherry or crimson tones, with a white center, and a lot of white "streaks" on the petals. The center of the flower is decorated with a bunch of golden stamens, which turn brown rather quickly. The brushes are dense, often resembling large crimson balls. Leaves are dark green in color. The variety is vigorous, disease resistant.

Cornelia

A plant with delicate pink-apricot flowers. The bush grows up to one hundred and sixty centimeters with a width of more than one and a half meters. Small semi-double flowers are striking in their huge amount. They bloom from coral red buds.

The reverse side of the petals remains salmon pink. This variety differs from others with wavy petals. In extreme heat, the color usually fade. The flowers form large brushes. In the first flowering up to twenty-five pieces, in the fall their number is almost twice as large. The leaves are dark green, shiny. Shoots are smooth, almost without thorns.

Rose Felicia

This variety is famous for its salmon pink flowers. The height of the bush reaches one hundred and sixty centimeters, the width is about one hundred and eighty centimeters. The variety is resistant to disease. Many growers consider this to be one of the best musk rose hybrids. It has the largest flowers, the most beautiful color and the longest flowering period.

The flowers are double, the petals are long, with a pink back with an apricot shade and creamy bases. Flowers are formed in clusters of large sizes (up to fifteen pieces). In autumn, the brushes become larger, and their number also increases (up to fifty pieces). The bush is quite sprawling, but requires only minimal pruning, especially in the early years. The foliage is large, dark green, shiny, the thorns are large.

From my own experience, I know that most rose gardeners usually prefer the usual climbing roses that adorn arches and pergolas, tirelessly blooming floribundas of all colors and shades, hybrid tea beauties with their exquisite flowers, fragrant English novelties. Meanwhile, the history of their appearance began back in 1904, when the German gardener Peter Lambert obtained a hybrid of a multi-flowered rose and a noisette, called Trier. It was this white climbing rose that was destined to become the progenitor of all later bred varieties, called musky. In particular, in 1936 Lambert was registered Mozart - one of the few varieties currently known in our country.

This masterpiece of selection blooms continuously until frost with caps of white-pink, phlox-like flowers. A strong, spreading bush covered with small leaves, resistant to black spot, normally tolerates partial shade.

UNRIVALED VARIETIES OF MUSCULAR ROSES

Other breeders also worked on the hybridization of musk and noisette roses. So, in England, the vicar Joseph Pemberton obtained varieties that remain unsurpassed today - Daphne (1912), Danae (1913), Pax (1918), Prosperity (1919), Vanity (1920), Penelope (1924), Cornelia (1925), Felicia (1926), Robin Hood (1927).

Pax - the legendary rose of English selection, white semi-double with golden stamen eyelashes. It is distinguished from other musk roses by its graceful creamy elongated buds on long pedicels. There are up to 30 flowers in the brushes. The dark green glittering foliage beautifully sets off the pure white flowers. Young leaves and growth are dark crimson. Bush sprawling, flexible shoots up to 4 m long, which allows cultivating the variety on a support as a rambler.

Cornelia - Terry fragrant apricot flowers with a wavy edge bloom in large numbers on flexible smooth shoots 150-175 cm long. A fountain-shaped bush, wide, spreading (up to 120 cm). The spherical buds, red-coral, together with the already blossoming flowers, are a breathtaking sight. The variety is surprisingly resistant to rain and partial shade.

Penelope and now one of the most popular varieties of musk roses. Pink buds with peach blush; flat, fragrant creamy pink semi-double flowers with a diameter of 6 - 8 cm with lemon-yellow stamens and wavy edges are collected in loose inflorescences. The leaves are at first a rare plum-red shade, then they become dark green, shiny. The variety is extremely unpretentious, tolerates both a semi-teeming arrangement and poor soils.

Prosperity - an English old variety with semi-double rosette flowers, white with pink "shadows", very fragrant, collected in large inflorescences. Glossy foliage makes a wonderful backdrop for flowers. The width of the bush reaches one meter.

Felicia rightly considered Pemberton's masterpiece. And how could it be otherwise, if this rose is the most beautiful and stable, with long flowering!

Terry peach-pink very large, fragrant flowers, reminiscent of hybrid tea varieties, are collected in loose brushes, each up to 50 pieces. The foliage is bright green, shiny, in the spring - a bronze shade. The bush is powerful, spreading, up to 150 cm high and up to 250 cm wide, with arched shoots. In autumn it is covered with large red fruits. Decorative throughout the season, from early spring to late autumn.

BALLERINA VARIETY

The students and followers of Pemberton, the spouses Jack and Anne Bentall, in 1937 in England received a wonderful, well-recognizable variety Ballerinablooming with round caps of simple, small pale pink flowers, somewhat reminiscent of apple flowers.

This is one of the few roses among musk hybrids, which is already familiar to Russian gardeners, and its popularity is growing from year to year. Which is completely unsurprising

But this is a very reliable, rather unpretentious and winter-hardy variety. In the brushes, flowers open in turn, changing color from bright pink, the favorite color of the Barbie doll, to pure white. The foliage is bright green, the stems are practically thornless. In the fall, the bush is strewn with orange fruits. The variety is distinguished by its extraordinary abundance and continuity of flowering. Blooms so that foliage is not visible. A group of several plants is a delightful sight, something truly reminiscent of a ballerina's tutu. Good in mixed plantings and curbs.

BEAUTY LOVER

Two years later, the couple got another wonderful variety - Buff beauty... An excellent representative of musk hybrids - one of the most widespread varieties in Europe. The length of graceful drooping shoots reaches 175 cm, the diameter of the flowers is up to 10 cm. A spreading bush up to one and a half meters wide. The flowers are densely double, yellow-apricot, collected in large loose inflorescences with a rare, apple-banana aroma. Wonderful large leaves - reddish at first, then dark green.

AMAZING strangers

Nowadays, the Belgian nursery Lens (Pepinieres Lens), created in 1870, is recognized as the undisputed leader in the hybridization of musk roses. Since the 50s of the XX century, more than 100 varieties of musk roses have been obtained here (in total, about 800 varieties of this group are entered in the world register ). In our country, unfortunately, all of them are still little known. Meanwhile, in this nursery, delightful varieties have been bred: Heavenly Pink (1997), Dinky1 (2002), Jean Stephenne (2006), Guirlande dAmour1 (2008) and many others.

Jean Stephenne - a vigorously growing healthy bush that gives, imagine, several thousand (!) Flowers per season. The buds of a delicate salmon color bloom into semi-double creamy pink flowers. The bush has dense light green foliage and burgundy tops of the shoots.

Guirlande dAmour - a tall upright variety that can be grown as a rambler, covered with delicate creamy white flowers with yellow stamens, tolerates partial shade normally, and is resistant to rain.

Guirlande Rose - the variety, bred fifteen years later than the previous one, is also a rambler up to 4 m tall, but with pink-cream flowers, collected in luxurious inflorescences-bouquets, with a light, unobtrusive pleasant clove aroma. Shoots are practically thornless. It is also resistant to diseases, tolerates shady location normally.

Quite special - Bouquet parfait, fully justifying its name, which translated from French means "excellent bouquet". Its dense globular inflorescences, consisting of milky-white flowers with pink at the edges, are really like ready-made bouquets for the bride. There is its analogue with white flowers. Neige dEte, decorated with lush inflorescences of cup-shaped snow-white flowers with yellow stamens, which bloom all at the same time, forming spectacular bouquets. The variety is frost-resistant, good for cutting, the flowers are not at all afraid of rain.

LIKE HORTENZIUM

Among the varieties from the Lens nursery, it stands apart Alden Biesen... Its peculiarity lies in the fact that small pinkish flowers, collected in huge pyramidal inflorescences, after flowering remain on the bush and turn green, which makes the bush look like a hydrangea. Withered inflorescences are great for dry bouquets.

CREAM, PINK, RED ROSES

Other varieties stand out: Feeling with creamy yellow buds, fragrant semi-double white flowers with a bunch of golden yellow stamens; excellent Bukavu - simple two-colored carmine-red flowers with a white center and wavy edges are collected in spectacular brushes that are not afraid of rain; Magie dOrientsimilar to ia Ballerina, only the bush is taller and spreading, inflorescences of simple white-pink flowers hang elegantly on long shoots.

NEW GENERATION MUSCULAR ROSES

Among the new products from the Lens nursery, we can recommend a new generation of musk rose hybrid Grand-Due Jean (2010) is a tall, erect variety with relatively large, simple cherry-red flowers with a white bottom and long yellow stamens, blooming continuously from early summer to autumn. The brushes of simple, non-double, cupped carmine-red flowers with a white "bottom", with bright yellow stamens, do not fade for a long time. The leaves are elongated, dark green. Hybrid Robe fleurie - no more than half a meter in height, flowers are simple, white-pink, reminiscent of apple trees. MUSCULAR ROSES IN GROUPS, FLOWERS AND MORE

Few plants are capable of creating such a magnificent decorative effect as musk roses! Group plantings of one variety in a row or in flower beds simply amaze with abundant flowering. Placing in arrays allows you to create luxurious color spots. It should be noted that in the countries of Western Europe, musk roses are widely used in urban landscaping - this is another evidence of their unpretentiousness.

In addition, no one has canceled the planting of musk hybrids in rose gardens, alongside traditional large-flowered varieties. Their presence will only emphasize the grace of hybrid tea roses, the bright charm of floribunda and complement the decorativeness of scrubs.

Here you just need to try not to be mistaken with color combinations: plant either in monochrome, color in color, or according to the principle of contrast. And in the period between the first and second wave of flowering, when almost all roses pause, planting continuously flowering musk hybrids will be very useful.

The only condition is that they need to leave enough space "for growth", given their spreading shape. Fragrant varieties are given a place next to benches and gazebos.

Musk roses are also good in the background of flower beds.

They are used in combined plantings together with ornamental-deciduous shrubs - barberries, of which there are a great many variations, vesicles, derens and spireas.The best companions among perennials are clematis whole-leaved, various varieties of geraniums, Fassen's catnip, sage. Hybrids with long shoots of 2.5 - 4 m, as already mentioned, can be grown as climbing ramblers, decorating arches, columns and pyramids with them. Many varieties are suitable for decorative hedges.

The simple flower shape and the relaxed spreading shape of the bush make the simple flowered varieties great in gardens and natural style compositions where they are planted among cereals.

In short, I strongly advise you to take a closer look at musk hybrids. Given the abundance of assortment, they can be used to achieve a stunning decorative result with little effort. Plant a couple of musk hybrids in your home - the result will exceed all your expectations!

In search of musk

Do not think that nThese roses were named for the delicate aroma inherited from the species musk rose... Not all of them exude the smell of musk - a substance secreted by the glands of some animals, such as musk deer or beaver.

According to experts, in a concentrated form, it is rather sharp and unpleasant. It's just that musk in micro doses is used in the manufacture of perfumes, and the aroma of a wild musk rose rather evokes some perfume associations. The paradox is that many of the later obtained hybrids cannot boast of aroma, and some of them do not smell at all of musk, but of apples or bananas. But this is so, notes in the margins for those who will unsuccessfully look for that notorious scent of musk.

This is due to the peculiarities of flowering. This happens without interruption - such a perpetuum mobile of beauty, and the flowers bloom almost simultaneously.

Most musk rose varieties tolerate light partial shade. Their shoots are flexible, they are easy to hide in a winter shelter. Yes, they have practically no flaws, except that most require quite a lot of space due to the fact that they have a wide, spreading shape and long arched drooping shoots.

FEATURES OF CUTTING MUSCULAR ROSES

I want to warn you that all musk roses do not tolerate heavy pruning! High pruning promotes early flowering. Otherwise, with low pruning, they, although they grow back quickly, will bloom only by the middle of summer. Formative pruning is the removal of flowering buds in summer to stimulate the regrowth of new flowering shoots. The repeated flowering wave will be stronger due to this. This should be practiced until mid-September, and then - let the rose form fruits, in some varieties they are very cute, similar to bright cherries.

In the spring, in the third year after planting, biennial shoots are cut to the base. This technique promotes the emergence of new basal skeletal branches. And this should be done annually, removing old branches on the ring. That, in fact, is all the wisdom with pruning. And the reason for this is the appearance. In this regard, musk roses are inferior to other varieties. Tea varieties look better at first glance, and finely doubled musk roses rarely catch the eye in garden brochures. And very in vain - from a distance the bushes look very, very beautiful. And they will fit perfectly into nature-style gardens or low-maintenance gardens.

Unlike other varieties, musk roses exude scent not with petals, but with stamens. This difference allows them to smell sweet even in cloudy weather. The scent of the flowers is reminiscent of musk (that's why the flowers got their name).Also, you can distinguish the smells of honey, fruits and cloves. You will be surprised, but one bush will exude a pleasant aroma for the whole garden. Even standing far from the bushes, you can smell the characteristic smell.

Another difference from the flowers we are used to is that musk roses bloom repeatedly. They can bloom twice in one season. Moreover, the second time the flowers will not decrease, on the contrary, the repeated flowering is often more abundant. Other flowers cannot boast of this - the second bloom is often very modest and hardly pleasing to the eye. Flowers simply cover the bush, so they will always catch the eye of guests in your garden. In addition to re-flowering, musk roses have another feature - the flowers bloom almost simultaneously. Also, flowering occurs from top to bottom. Other flowers usually bloom in turn, and there is no such "friendly" bloom. Musk roses can be called continuously blooming - the fact is that the break between flowering is minimal, and the bushes are almost constantly strewn with flowers.
