Height

For many lovers of dahlias, the height indicators of adult plants are of no small importance. Based on this criterion, varieties are divided into the following groups:

• lilliputians - dahlia crumbs that grow no more than 25-30 cm;
• dwarf - low, miniature bushes, the height should not exceed 50-60 cm;
• gallery varieties - average between midgets and dwarfs;
• medium-sized - in these varieties, plants reach 90-100 cm;
• tall - a large group of varieties, the height of which is higher than 110 cm.

By inflorescence size

Pinching is used if you have planted small tubers or rooted cuttings, or the plant develops into one stem, but you need to increase its productivity. At the height of the 4-5th pair of leaves, pinch the central shoot just above the leaves. Lateral buds wake up in the sinus, and the plant begins to develop evenly into two shoots. For each of the new shoots, you can also pinch the tip over the 2-3rd pair of leaves. As a result, 4 peduncles develop, blooming almost simultaneously.

NOTE! • Dahlias are quite drought tolerant, and water them as needed, no more than 1 time per week. In this case, it is necessary that the water penetrates into the soil to a depth of 30-40 cm (10-15 liters of water per 1 bush). Daily frequent watering forms stagnation of water in the roots, and rotting of the tubers begins. In hot weather, you can spray the leaves with water. You should pay attention to the regularity of watering in August - September, if during this period there is little or no rain.

• From late June to mid-July, watering with slurry is carried out 2-3 times every 10 days (1 bucket of solution for 5 plants). This procedure promotes their rapid growth.

• In early August, fertilizing with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers is carried out for better maturation and formation of tubers, as well as increasing their winter hardiness. The consumption rate of any mineral fertilizer is 40 g / m2.

How to get both cut and planting material? Enhanced feeding and watering, of course, are good for enhanced growth, but have a bad effect on the formation of tubers and their further storage. How to get both cut and quality tubers? All available plants are divided into 3 groups.

1st group - the best 2-year-old plants (from last year's overwintered cuttings), which will be laid for storage and from which cuttings will be taken next year. These dahlias are watered as needed and fed in the first half of summer, until early August. The cut is carried out until September. In the future, all agrotechnical measures are aimed at ripening root tubers.

Group 2 - rooted cuttings, planted very often, from which the maximum cut is obtained. Careful care, top dressing, the formation of bushes - everything is aimed at obtaining a high-quality cut. To obtain them, cuttings begin in mid-February. The sooner you do this, the better the plants will be. Rooted cuttings in April can be sold as planting material. The best specimens for the 1st group are immediately selected.

Group 3 - plants grown from tubers, from which all suitable cuttings were taken, leaving 2-3 shoots. They are planted in April already formed. This group gives the maximum amount of cut. Plants do not need to be stored.

And how do you keep the flowers? I cut the flowers in the evening, when the inflorescences fully bloom, and immediately put them in a container of water in a cool room. I remove all the leaves from the stems.

Dahlias last longer in cool distilled or acidified water (1 tablespoon 9% vinegar per liter of water). Adding 1 tablet of aspirin or a few crystals of boric acid, or potassium permanganate (pale pink solution) also increases the shelf life of cut flowers.

To revive slightly wilted dahlia flowers before implementation, I cut the ends of the stems, lower them for 5 minutes. in hot water (40'C) and then keep it in cold water in a cool room for 3 hours.

For transportation, the matured flowers are laid in 1 row on damp paper in boxes and kept for some time at a temperature of 5 * C. In the future, I pack the boxes in plastic wrap and you can transport them over long distances, for close ones - it is better to transport the cut dahlia in vessels with water.

Some favorite varieties

Barbarossa (nymph)... The bush is compact, 140 cm high. Inflorescences with a diameter of 16 cm are directed upwards on strong peduncles 35 cm long. The ligulate flowers are wide, flat, slightly pointed, bright red, luminous, with a velvety bloom, the reverse side is lighter.

Eveline (Evelyne) (globular)... The bush is compact, 120 cm high. Inflorescences with a diameter of 12 cm are directed upwards and sideways on strong peduncles about 50 cm long. White ligate flowers with a delicate lilac shade along the edge are curled into a funnel, there are yellow tubular ones.

The best time to cut flowers is early in the morning, when dew is still present on the plants and the increased evaporation of moisture from the foliage and stems, which is usual during the day, has not begun. Cut the flower stems as long as possible, since with a long cut, the plants in the future will themselves give longer stems.

Flowers should be cut when they reach full development (Fig. 1). Such flowers will be larger and, moreover, will be better preserved. Some inexperienced hobbyists cut flowers too young and then wonder why they are smaller than those of professional gardeners. The explanation is simple: the flowers are cut earlier than they should.

For whatever purpose the cut flowers go, they should not be allowed to wither on the bush, except, of course, when they are grown for seeds. As soon as the flowers begin to wither, they need to be cut off. This removal of colors should be viewed as pruning, i.e. as one of the methods of caring for a plant. The next flowers will be on longer stems and the whole bush will take on a better shape.

If cut flowers are to be shipped, they must be cut in the morning (before shipment). The lower leaves are removed, and the cut flowers are placed in cold water before shipment. To reduce evaporation, they should be kept in a cool, dark place.

Slightly wilted flowers can sometimes be revitalized by immersing the cut ends of the stems in very hot water for a few minutes, then back in cold water. After this operation, the flowers are placed in a cool, dark place. But flowers revived in this way are not suitable for transport.

Whenever the flowers are taken out of the water, the cut must be resumed, as the pores of the original cut very quickly clog up and the stems no longer absorb water.

Long-term observations of a large number of dahlia varieties have shown that dahlias as a cut crop are inferior to many other flowering plants, for example, gladioli, lilies, irises, peons, and some phlox. The cut flowers of these plants not only do not wither for several days, but even give flowering of unblown buds. Dahlias are poorly endowed with this property. Most of the new large varieties are characterized by low resistance, quickly wither and lose color. But in this respect, there are great differences among the varieties. A number of varieties of cactus dahlias, for example: "Black Servant", "Ruby", "Krimgilda", and from decorative: "Golden Youth", "Rapallo", "Adler", etc., can retain their shape much longer and not wither ... Pompom and spherical varieties are especially valuable for cutting.

Large varieties "Jean Chazot", "Insulinda", "Amun Ra", "Red Cross", "King Harold", "Tuthenhamun", "Sunset", "Hanni Waveren", "Jackson", "Porthos" and many others , differing in exceptional decorativeness, unfortunately, they are not resistant, quickly fade and lose their shape.

When breeding dahlias, it is necessary to pay special attention to finding and consolidating properties that increase the quality of dahlias as a cut crop.

The best cutting material is medium-sized flowers with strong, sturdy stems. Plants, the flowers of which will be cut, must be grown in harsher conditions, since if they are too strong and lush growth, they have flowers that are not sufficiently resistant when cut. Dahlia bushes that have been pinched will always give the best results.

Cutting flowers should be done in the morning or at the end of the day, when the sun is no longer hot. Leaves from cut stems should be removed, except for those closest to the flowers. Immediately after cutting, dahlias should be placed on the site in a bucket of water.

Before shipment, if it is delayed and the flowers need to be snowed, they are placed in a bucket, two-thirds filled with cold water, and placed in a cool, dark basement with stagnant humid air. If, in addition, the basement wall is sprayed with cold water, then we get something like refrigerator for flowers. In such conditions, even withered flowers regain their freshness within a few hours.

Flowers are usually packed in corrugated cardboard boxes. They are laid in one or two layers, not squeezing too much, but tightly. The heads of the flowers should be facing in different directions, and the stems should be pressed with strips to the bottom of the box, in order to avoid damage from shaking.

Before packing, the box is laid out with wax paper, which should be of such a size as to cover the flowers on top.

With proper cutting and skillful packaging, flowers can be successfully shipped up to 20 hours.

Some guidelines for flower exhibitions. The preparation of the flowers should begin approximately 7 days before the show. First of all, it is necessary that all exhibition specimens of plants be firmly and carefully tied to stakes, since an accidental storm can destroy dahlias at the last moment. If some flowers can develop ahead of time, they need to be shaded. In addition, by shading, we enhance the depth and brightness of the color in red and pink varieties. But it is not necessary to shade the whole plant, but only individual flowers. To do this, use wire rings covered with muslin; they are tied to stakes at the required height.

The flowers are cut in the morning or in the evening on the eve of the exhibition day. To refresh them, you can use the same methods as indicated above (immersion in cold water, room in a dark, cool place, etc.).

If the flowers need to be transported to the exhibition, it is very important that they are completely dry before packing, since raw petals can rot on the way. Boxes serve as containers, their height should be slightly larger than the diameter of the largest flowers. Flowers are neatly placed in single rows in boxes pre-lined with paper.

So that the petals of large flowers are not pressed down to the bottom of the box, a pillow made of some soft material, for example, tissue paper, is placed under the stems at the neck. Rows of flowers are laid on the end sides of the box. Tissue paper is laid between the rows to the very top of the box. Longer-stemmed varieties go to the bottom of the box.

Please note that some of the flowers sent will not work, so a slightly larger number should be sent.
