Getting new plants by growing vertical shoots is relevant.

The method of propagation by cuttings is great even for inexperienced gardeners. Growing healthy shoots are cut during the period of active plant growth, in late spring. The bottom cut of the cutting is just below the first node, and the top cut is just above the second node. You can plant the stems in the ground or boxes with the addition of vermiculite, humus or peat. With active watering, the first shoots will appear after 3 weeks.

A more laborious way of propagating a plant is a leaf cutting. In this case, the leaf is cut along with the bud and part of the stem of the plant, transplanted into fertilized soil in a greenhouse or greenhouse. The complexity of this method is the need to pay increased attention when growing the cuttings, to cover shoots from direct sunlight, to protect them from decay and drought. After rooting, the cutting should be planted in the ground.

Seed propagation is a fairly simple option for obtaining new plants. It should be remembered that some varieties of phlox are not distinguished by good germination. The collection of seeds begins after the formation of seed pods on the trunks of the plants. The stems are cut and dried. The seeds are removed immediately before sowing. It is better to carry out the procedure before the beginning of winter. Cover the sown grains with a thin layer of prepared soil.

When choosing a place for planting phlox, it is necessary to avoid swampy soil. To prevent adult stems from breaking, you should not place the bush in an open place where strong gusts of wind are possible. Some varieties can fade when exposed to direct sunlight. In the selected place, the snow cover should be sufficient so that the roots of the bush do not freeze.

4 Diseases and rules of care

Phloxes take organic and mineral supplements with pleasure. Peat, cow and horse manure, humus give the plant strength. When adding potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, you must strictly adhere to the instructions for use of the drug. With a lack of nutrients in the soil, the bushes become frail and are characterized by poor flowering. Weakened plants can be susceptible to diseases such as rust or powdery mildew.

Phloxes love abundant watering, but stagnant water should be avoided. It is not necessary to allow the root system to be exposed; periodically, the bush must be spud. Loosening the soil removes weeds and fills the soil with oxygen.

For all the unpretentiousness of these flowers, they, like other representatives of the flora, need the love and attention of a person. Receiving care and attention, beautiful phloxes will delight the grower every season and give lush bunches of delicate petals as a sign of gratitude.

The domestic phlox breeding school has a rich history and traditions. Most experts believe that Soviet and Russian varieties of phlox are the best in the world.

Phlox has been cultivated in Russia since the 19th century. At the origins of domestic selection is Georgy Germanovich Trespe (1868–1941), who for almost 40 years worked as the Chief Gardener of the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University. It was he who bred the first Russian varieties of phlox, at least those. that have survived and have survived to this day. For example, the variety "Alexander Immer" in 1912 (see below), which is considered the oldest surviving domestic variety of phlox.

Phlox paniculata "Ural tales".

In the USSR, work on the development of new varieties of phlox began in the 30s of the last century. The most famous phlox originator Pavel Gavrilovich Gaganov in the 1930s - 1960s bred hundreds of phlox varieties that make up the elite of domestic breeding. It was he who laid the foundations of the national school of phlox breeding.

Speaking about the selection of phlox in the Soviet Union, it is worth noting the work of Ekaterina Dmitrievna Kharchenko, who worked in the Kiev National Botanical Garden, breeder Maria Fedorovna Sharonova (1885-1987).

Since the 1970s, the work of P.G. Gaganov was continued by Yuri Andreevich Reprev. Candidate of Technical Sciences, Mechanical Engineer, aircraft designer Yu.A. Reprev was interested in phlox from his youth. Meetings with P.G.Gaganov encouraged him to work with phlox breeding. He has created dozens of unique varieties.

Elena Alekseevna Konstantinova began breeding work with phlox in 1982 under the leadership of Yu.A. Repreva. She is currently the chairman of the Russian Society of Phlox Lovers.

By the timing of flowering, phlox varieties are divided into early, middle and late. In the classification of phlox varieties, the following abbreviations are adopted:

OR - very early variety (blooms in early June),
R - early variety (blooms in late June - early July),
Wed - mid-early variety (blooms in early July - mid-July),
WITH - medium variety (blooms in late July - early August),
Joint venture - medium-sized variety (blooms in early August - mid-August)
NS - late variety (blooms from the end of August).

We bring to your attention a selection of the most valuable and interesting domestic - Russian and Soviet varieties of phlox paniculata (Phlox paniculata L.).

Different literary and Internet sources sometimes indicate different flowering times for the same phlox variety, therefore, in such cases, we indicate the interval of flowering times. For some varieties, the author and / or year of creation is not known.

Plant several different varieties of phlox on your site, choosing them according to the flowering time so that phlox blooms in your garden all summer. Domestic varieties of phlox offer you the richest selection of colors and shades.
