It is rare that an ornamental plant can bloom in one place for many years. Daylilies, varieties with photos and names of which are described below, are capable of not only growing, but also blooming magnificently, annually striking with a variety of shapes and colors.

Today, tens of thousands of large and miniature varieties are available to flower growers passionate about these plants. Large flowers that appear above the foliage illuminate the garden with all shades of yellow and red, pink and lilac, white and deep purple.

It was possible to achieve such a variety of daylilies thanks to complex hybridization using species of plants.

Species and hybrid daylilies

It is not the brightest and most spectacular species of plants, and today common in gardens and parks, became the ancestors of hybrid daylilies, far superior to "natural savages" in brightness of colors, duration of flowering and unexpected forms, which, thanks to breeders, received flower corollas.

The most famous and widespread are three species forms. Daylily brown-yellow (Hemerocallis fulva) with pointed linear leaves, growing in sunny areas and in partial shade, forms powerful clumps. Above them, peduncles with orange flowers are clearly visible, swaying regularly on peduncles up to a meter high.

Daylily yellow (Hemerocallis flava) resembles the previous species, while its leaves are more prone to drooping as they grow back. Corolla flowers about 10 cm in diameter have a sunny yellow color.

Another natural species that became the ancestor of modern hybrid plants is the lemon yellow daylily (Hemerocallis citrine). Plants up to 120 cm high with graceful light yellow or greenish flowers bloom en masse from the second half of summer.

The first cultivated varieties of daylilies were created with the help of intraspecific selection, therefore, while retaining the characteristics of their ancestors, they received larger flowers, spectacular double corollas, began to bloom longer and less depend on growing conditions. The names and photos of these varieties of daylilies are still well known to flower growers.But the maximum popularity was won by hybrids, for which, due to the abundance of forms, colors and other characteristics, a special classification was developed.

The existing hybrid daylilies are distinguished by the shape of the flower, highlighting:

• simple, most close to the natural look;
• terry, with a double or triple set of petals;
• arachnids, with elongated petals, making the corolla look like an insect;
• unusual or indefinite shape;
• as well as multiforms and polymers, which, for one reason or another, can be attributed to several groups at once.

No less important than the shape of the flower, the duration of flowering and the time of its beginning are important for the grower. On this basis, plants are divided into several groups from early to very late. There are daylilies that bloom only once a year, but more and more breeders are presenting hybrid plants, in which the formation of buds occurs in waves, several times over the summer.

Since each corolla of the daylily lives only a day, there are varieties of night, day and long flowering types. Knowing the peculiarity of the culture, you can choose varieties for the garden that will make it unique at any time of the day.

The sizes of the daylilies themselves and the flowers that unfold on them vary greatly. Miniature varieties do not exceed 30-40 cm in height, and giants can produce flower stalks up to one and a half meters. Corollas up to 7-8 cm are considered small. The most spectacular flowers have a diameter of about 15-17 cm.

Daylily Frans Hals, Frans Hals

Bright yellow-orange color of petals for daylilies is "native", natural. The roots of the plant are straightened from above, but so that their neck is not deepened by more than 2-2.5 cm. The soil is poured from above and trampled. Then the plant must be watered. To ensure the regime of water permeability, the soil near the bushes is mulched with peat or compost.

How to grow properly

Garden soil is perfect for planting daylilies in the open field and facilitating their care.

If your site is dominated by poor sod-podzolic soils, then they must be improved by adding a mixture of sand with peat and mineral fertilizers. But clay and sandy soils are not quite suitable for this plant.

To do this, the soil must be mulched using peat or wood chips. This will ensure the most abundant flowering of the daylily.

How is the reproduction of the daylily carried out

Seed cultivation violates the varietal parameters of plants. This method is applicable in breeding, but there is also a risk of cross-pollination, as a result of which a hybrid daylily appears. Lack of seed setting or loss of germination is often observed.

Seeds are sown after harvest closer to winter or spring next year. In the latter case, a two-month stratification is carried out at a temperature of 2-4 degrees. The seeds are planted to a depth of 2 cm, but the plants will give flowers only after 2-3 years.

In the case of vegetative reproduction, the principle of division is used. This is done in April-May, when the leaves grow and the plant begins to grow. With this option, it is necessary to take five-year-old bushes.

The strips are formed by cutting with a knife. If you take them from the extreme parts of the bush, then the rooting process occurs very quickly.

But in the absence of young roots, when extraction from the middle occurs, it is necessary to remove the damaged processes, update the sections, and shorten the excessively elongated roots.

Before planting in the place of rooting, the cuttings germinate within 1-2 years.

Daylily planting in open ground is done in the spring. But you can divide it in August-September, providing the necessary time for fixing the roots.
