The pioneer in this field was the breeder Toichi Ito (Japan), and these beautiful plants with flowers of delicate color were named after him. Ito began his painstaking work more than half a century ago (in 1948), since then his students have continued the work of a teacher, receiving new, more perfect forms.

The results of modern breeders significantly surpassed the original goals, as a result, a separate section of garden peonies was created, which differs significantly from the herbaceous forms.

Description of peonies Ito hybrids

Ito hybrids are perennial plants with completely (or most) dying off ground stems every year. Bushes 50-90 cm high, wide, growing to the sides, densely leafy. Stems are often deviating or curving. Leaves, similar to the leaves of tree-like peonies, do not fade for a long time in autumn - before the onset of severe frosts, some change color in autumn. Information on the longevity of intersectional peonies has not yet been accumulated, but, from my own experience and taking into account the longevity of the parental couple, I can expect many years and fruitful life of varieties of this group of peonies.

Flowering in varieties descended from hybrids of p. Yellow (LH) - in the middle and late periods, simultaneously with varieties of p. Lacto-flowering. In the varieties obtained from P. suffructicosa - at an earlier date. In many varieties, flowering is relatively long, up to 2-3 weeks due to the gradual dissolution of the apical buds and then flowering of the lateral ones. The buds are shaped like chestnut fruits and are often brown colored.

The flowers of the peony varieties of Ito-hybrids are similar in description to tree-like ones, but have spots in the center. Often scented. In the cut, they are short-lived, but more persistent than tree-like ones.

The instability of the shape and color of flowers is noted, depending on the age of the plant, external conditions, and the instability of hereditary traits. As a result of the mutation, the varieties of Ito-pions Lemon Dream and White Emperor were obtained. The yellow-colored varieties are still particularly attractive. As for other colors, the bushes of Ito-hybrids at the peak of flowering are inferior to varieties of tree-like peonies, but differ from the latter in later flowering periods and the possibility of reproduction by dividing the rhizome.

How to plant peonies Ito hybrids in spring and autumn

The accumulated experience in caring for Ito-peonies allows us to assert that our growers can successfully grow Ito-hybrids. However, Ito are complex hybrids obtained from species peonies from different climatic zones: from the steppes of our Transbaikalia to the high-mountain meadows of Tibet, so some of the varieties may require an individual approach. The varieties described above are quite resistant to the cold weather of the Moscow region. They endured many winters with frosts, including the abnormal winter of 2002-2003, heat and drought of 2010-2011. no loss. Shelter for the winter is not necessary, although sometimes you can cover (with a layer of oak leaves or spruce branches) some new cuttings, especially with late planting.

Before planting Ito-peonies, you need to choose the right site. Planting site requirements are the same as for herbaceous peonies. But when determining the size of the pit, it should be borne in mind that many Ito varieties develop their underground part more to the sides than in depth. For example, the size of a pit for long-term cultivation should be 100X100X60 cm, and when kept in a collection - 75X75X45 cm. From my experience I will add that Ito respond well to shading at noon.

Ito hybrids are best planted where garden crops used to grow or where there was virgin land. Avoid previous planting sites of peonies or large trees and shrubs. The groundwater level must be at least 100 cm below the surface.

In order to plant Itopions in spring or autumn, as required by correct agricultural technology, the soil must be neutral or slightly alkaline in terms of acidity. In central Russia, it is necessary to maintain the acidity level pH = 6.5-7.5 by periodically adding deoxidizing additives to the soil around the plantings (bone meal, dolomite meal or limestone meal).

Planting dates are the same as for other peonies: preferable in autumn, from late August to early October (in the middle lane). When planting peonies of Ito hybrids in the spring, strive to do this as early as possible, before mid-May. In general, caring for Ito hybrids after planting is similar to caring for herbaceous peonies. Most of Ito's shrubs do not need support (holds flowers). Prospects for the reproduction of peonies of Ito hybrids

The spread of Ito hybrids in gardens is still constrained by high prices for planting material.But as these peonies multiply, prices are likely to decline. There is already information about the successful results of accelerated reproduction in vitro in Germany and inoculation in Italy.

What can be expected from breeding work on the reproduction of Ito-pions in the future? It can be assumed that attempts will be made in two directions: the creation of forms of Ito-hybrids, close to herbaceous and tree-like peonies.

The first direction in the future will enrich the range of herbaceous varieties: yellow, orange, lilac, lilac, greenish colors, with contrasting spots in the center. And it will help to create new forms of bushes that hold flowers in weight.

The second direction of breeding will make it possible to obtain varieties of tree peonies with all their excellent qualities, to which will be added increased cold resistance, the ability to reproduce by dividing the rhizome and color and shape of herbaceous peonies.

In addition, breeders can try to breed remontant peony varieties that bloom again in the second half of summer.

The real achievement of Japanese breeders was the new ITO peonies, which were obtained by crossing herbaceous and tree-like peonies. Such hybrids impressed with their color of flowers, vigorous growth, decorative flowering, good reproduction and excellent frost resistance. Flowers of Ito hybrids look great in group plantings and singly, in landscape design. Their bloom lasts the entire summer period, from spring to late autumn. Growing ITO peonies in the open field does not require special care, and is a fairly simple task. The only rule is to choose the right place for planting these flowers. After all, these are perennial plants that will grow in one place for decades. In addition, it is very difficult to transplant adult bushes, they have a powerful root system, the growth of which reaches 90 cm. It is also very important that the AID planting of peonies was carried out in places where there are no drafts and winds. In addition, hybrids do not grow well in highly moistened soils, where groundwater is very close, so planting peonies in spring in such an area is undesirable.

Soil for planting, care

For planting peonies, it is advisable to choose places with loamy soil, where there is a neutral acidity level. To bring the soil closer to sandy soil, you need to add peat, humus and sand, wood ash to it. Peonies are transplanted in early autumn or late summer. To do this, it is necessary to prepare a planting hole in diameter and depth of about 70 cm. If several bushes are transplanted, then the distance between them is 1.5 meters. A little sand, crushed stone and broken brick are poured into the bottom of the pit. The layer of this filling in the planting pit is about 15 cm. The next stage is the introduction of organic and mineral fertilizers. To obtain them, humus and compost, a little lime, superphosphate, potassium sulfate and wood ash are mixed. After 10 days, the soil will sag and you can start planting peonies. To do this, the root of the bush is placed in a hole, covered with earth and tamped a little. It is strictly forbidden to plant peonies very deeply, otherwise the bush will have gorgeous leaves, but no buds.

When planting peonies, you need to pay attention to the fact that the upper growth point is a maximum of three centimeters deep.

Sometimes, after planting, the bush takes on a withering appearance and does not bloom in the first year, but this is a common occurrence, since it must fully recover from stress. With good care, it blooms in the second year. Some of the best varieties of peonies tolerate transplanting less painfully and do not stop flowering.In the spring, a transplant is undesirable and is carried out only in rare cases. ITO-peonies were obtained by crossing the herbaceous and tree-like peonies, which have long been familiar to us. The plant has been known since 1974, and at the end of the 20th century they were combined into a separate group - ITO-hybrids (Itoh-Hybrids).

The predecessors of ITO peonies belong to different species, and, as expected, the new plant inherited the characteristics of both parents. From the tree peony, the hybrid took over the strength of the stems, the original color and shape of the flowers, and from the herbaceous peony, it is short in stature, frost resistance and light temper. Lush bushes of ITO-peonies reach a meter in height (undersized varieties are rare), the stems are straight, in the summer the carved leaves have a rich green color, and in the fall they acquire a reddish-bronze tint.

Double, semi-double or plain flowers can be up to 25 cm in diameter. A curious characteristic of the hybrid is that the size and splendor of the flowers directly depend on the age of the bush. In a young peony, the flowers are simple in shape, small, over the years they become larger and fluffier, but in an aging bush they become smaller and return to a simple form.

The flowering of herbaceous peonies can be compared with a bright, but short-term outbreak, because they bloom up to 6 or 7 days, the ITO-peony has a long flowering period - about 3 weeks, the buds (of which there are quite a few on one bush) open alternately.

The color of the petals of ITO peonies is very diverse, there are even chameleon varieties, with multi-colored flowers on one bush. In all hybrids, the petals have a contrasting center or strokes. The only minus of the flowers of a special peony is the aroma - it is barely perceptible or absent altogether. It is difficult to say which varieties of hybrids are early and which are late, we are still little familiar with this flower.

Young ITO-peonies cover the buds with foliage, and at the matured bush, the peduncles stretch out.

Hybrids do not like transplants, so from the very beginning, even before buying a seedling, you should think about everything to the smallest detail, study a few recommendations:

• in the shade, ITO-peonies are uncomfortable, they like open places. If there is no sun on the site, but you want to plant a special flower, allocate a place for it in partial shade;
• swampy, excessively wet areas are not to the taste of all peonies, avoid planting in such places, or take care of good drainage and build a high bed;
• there are no problems with the choice of soil - the plant is unpretentious in this sense, the only thing - do not plant it in acidic soil;
• prepare the soil for planting, a mixture of garden soil, neutral peat and humus in equal parts is suitable;
• regarding the preparation of pits, the opinions of flower growers differ, it is difficult to say which particular recommendation is more successful, because with any planting option, ITO-peonies take root well and develop in the future. The most practical is the following advice - the holes are dug just before planting, and adjust the width and depth, focusing on the size of the cut;
• the roots of ITO-peonies are able to grow freely in a direction convenient for them, and hybrids also deepen their buds on their own, so you don't need to dig huge holes to deepen them, just place the seedling in the hole at an angle and sprinkle the buds with earth.

ITO-hybrids of peonies are incredibly hardy, unpretentious, they are not afraid of diseases, the most important thing is the correct planting. Water the plants sparingly, and remember to irrigate during particularly hot periods. Fertilize peonies in moderation too. Studying the experience of growing a flower, we can conclude that all they need is dolomite flour and ash. A solution is prepared from the ash (20 liters of water per glass of ash), and the flour is added to the soil.

The first buds on young plants can not be removed, check the variety or just admire the newbie of the flower bed. The flowers will not affect the strength of the bush in any way, feel free to leave them, but when they wither, be sure to pick them off.

In autumn, with the onset of significant frosts, the branches of ITO-peonies must be cut off at ground level, boldly cut off the growth bud, the plant forms them much more underground than on the surface. If you do leave the stems with a bud, cover them for the winter.An adult plant does not need shelter, and young bushes of ITO-peonies in the first year can be slightly covered with spruce branches. Reproduction

ITO-peonies reproduce only vegetatively, flowers grown from seeds do not retain species characteristics.

Division of the bush. You can propagate only an adult plant (4 or 5 years old), in spring or autumn (September). When transplanting in spring, keep in mind that peony hybrids are rapidly starting to grow, but they do not have time to build up a sufficient number of roots to fully provide themselves with moisture and resist the heat. Additional watering and cover may be required during particularly hot periods. The breeding procedure, carried out in the autumn, allows the peony to grow stronger and build up a good root system until winter.

The branches of ITO-pions converge at one point, after which there is a small isthmus, and already the roots extend from it. It is the isthmus that must be divided, and very carefully, trying not to greatly damage the roots. There is talk about the incredible strength of the stump, to cut it, you need a hacksaw, no less! Allegations are exaggerated, often a common garden knife is enough.

The bushes of ITO-peonies keep their shape perfectly, even in adult plants with large flowers, the peduncles do not tilt to the ground, so in landscape design they can be used both as tapeworms and as an addition to groups - in any case, the flowers will look gorgeous! The main thing is to determine in advance the ideal place for a flower, after weighing all the nuances, because, as already mentioned, the ITO-peony does not like transplants and in one place it can grow for more than 15 years.

Ito hybrids of peonies appeared as a result of the desire of breeders to obtain herbaceous cultivars with flowers, the petals of which are colored yellow. When breeding varieties of Ito-hybrids, milky-flowered and species tree-like peonies were crossed. The leader in this area was the Japanese breeder Toichi Ito, after whom these beautiful plants were named. Toichi Ito began his painstaking work back in 1948. The work of breeders in the ITO direction continues to this day, making it possible to obtain all new, more advanced forms.

 

Peonies can be an adornment of absolutely any personal plot. All types of peonies are valued for their beautiful appearance. The bushes are covered with luxurious large fragrant flowers, the beauty of which is successfully emphasized by juicy green leaves. Peonies are used for single and group plantings in mixboders, on front gardens and lawns. In addition, they are commonly grown for cutting.

 

Ito hybrids are perennial plants with completely (or mostly) dying off ground stems every year. Bushes 50-90 cm high, wide, growing to the sides, densely leafy. Stems are often deviating or curving. Leaves, similar to the leaves of tree-like peonies, do not fade for a long time in the fall - before the onset of severe frosts, some change color in the fall.

Most varieties of peony Ito-hybrids have a fairly long flowering - up to 2-3 weeks, thanks to the gradual dissolution of the apical buds and then flowering of the lateral ones. The buds are shaped like chestnut fruits and are often brownish colored.

The flowers of the peony varieties of Ito-hybrids are similar in description to tree-like ones, but have spots in the center. Often scented. In the cut, they are short-lived, but more persistent than tree-like ones.

The instability of the shape and color of flowers is noted, depending on the age of the plant, external conditions, and the instability of hereditary traits.
