To streamline the varieties, as early as 1962 in Belgium at the congress, an international classification of dahlias was adopted. But many breeders consider it incomplete, therefore, different countries still have their own, national divisions into varieties.

So, flower growers in France use their classification, there are criteria for evaluating varieties in the USA, Great Britain. Usually, the following signs are the main ones when determining belonging to a group:

• the shape of the inflorescences;
• dahlia height;
• flower diameter;
• color spectrum.

The signs and parameters of only adult plants are taken into account. Each group division has its own peculiarities. So, Americans do not take into account the height of plants in the descriptions, at the same time, our and French growers pay attention to this.

Height

For many lovers of dahlias, the height indicators of adult plants are of no small importance. Based on this criterion, varieties are divided into the following groups:

• lilliputians - dahlia crumbs that grow no more than 25-30 cm;
• dwarf - low, miniature bushes, the height should not exceed 50-60 cm;
• gallery varieties - average between midgets and dwarfs;
• medium-sized - in these varieties, plants reach 90-100 cm;
• tall - a large group of varieties, the height of which is higher than 110 cm.

By inflorescence size

The size of the flower is also very indicative, since large-flowered varieties of dahlias are always among the favorites. However, everyone has different tastes, some people like crumbs-inflorescences more.

The following groups are distinguished:

• giant dahlias - inflorescences larger than 25 cm (dinner plate);
• large varieties - their flowers will reach 20-25 cm in diameter;
• medium - 15-20 cm;
• small (baskets usually grow no more than 15 cm;
• miniature - up to 10 cm.

Be sure to separately distinguish spherical and pompom varieties (large and miniature), as well as varieties of simple dahlias, the petals of which are located in one row.

International classification

The international classification of dahlias at first included 9 main groups (congresses in 1962, 1966), but since 2010, changes have been made.
