Growing a chubushnik shrub: planting and care (with photo)

Landing features. The distance between plants in groups is 0.5-1.5 m, in a single-row living hedge, plants are planted every 0.5 m, in well-lit places. They bloom worse in the shade than in the sun. For ease of care, the planting of the chubushnik shrub should be carried out to a depth of 50-60 cm, the root collar cannot be deepened by more than 2-3 cm, since in a deeper position it can rot. It tolerates transplanting well, since the roots hold a clod of earth well. Chubushniki prefer fertile soils: leafy soil, humus, sand (3: 2: 1). Drainage - crushed stone and sand with a layer of 15 cm.

Top dressing. It is recommended to pour 1 bucket of slurry on one bush annually (1:10). In the 3rd year after planting, mineral fertilizers are applied: 1 tbsp. spoon of urea, 2 tbsp. tablespoons of superphosphate, 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate, which are diluted in 10 liters of water and consumed for 1-2 plants. After flowering, 1 m2 is fed with 1 matchbox of superphosphate and 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate or 1 cup of wood ash.

Pruning. During care, when growing a mock orange, annual thinning and removal of faded inflorescences are required immediately after flowering. Every 2-3 years old shoots are removed, leaving those younger than 10-12 years old. This rejuvenation of the crown leads to more abundant flowering and strong growth. Crown mock-orange Aureus grows well in sunny areas, tolerates partial shade, but then blooms poorly. After flowering, it needs sanitary pruning.

Variegatus

This erect shrub reaches a height of 1.5 m. In addition to creamy white fragrant flowers, it has very attractive slightly serrated leaves (up to 5-9 cm long) of variegated (and some completely white) color.

Varieties of mock-orange (Philadelphus tenuifolius)

This shrub, up to 2.5 m high, has an unusual spherical crown: young branches of the plant form plexuses in the form of hexagons. Leaves are ovoid, pointed, slightly toothed. The French gardener Lemoine made a significant contribution to the spread of the mock-orange around the world, so a whole species is named after him. It includes hybrids of common mock-orange and small-leaved mock-orange. Chubushnik Lemoine is widespread in countries with temperate climates. True, plants of foreign breeding are less winter-hardy, therefore they are more often cultivated in regions with a milder climate. However, they are so attractive that in the middle lane, some gardeners are not too lazy to grow these garden jasmines with winter shelter. They bloom in late June and July.

Virginal

This hybrid mock-orange is also called girlish, virgin or innocent. The bush reaches a height of 2 m. During flowering, it is strewn with fragrant double flowers (about 5 cm in diameter), which are collected in inflorescences of 5-7 pieces.

Avalanche, or Avalanche

This chubushnik has the smell of strawberries, therefore, it is often called strawberry among the people. The shrub (about 1.5 m high) has thin brown shoots, narrow light green leaves (2 cm long) and many simple white flowers (up to 3 cm in diameter), which are arranged in 1-3 pieces on short axillary shoots and exude a pleasant strawberry flavor. Lush bloom is observed in July.

The disadvantage of this plant is that it cannot withstand frosts below –15 ° С.

snow avalanche

Since the Avalanche variety turned out to be insufficiently winter-hardy for the middle zone, the breeder N.K. Vekhov improved it and received an early-flowering winter-hardy variety, which he called the Snow Avalanche. This is a more graceful shrub up to 1.5 m in height with curved flowing branches, green leaves up to 4 cm long and numerous semi-double flowers (up to 3 cm in diameter), smelling of strawberries.

Ballet of moths

This variety is often mistakenly called the Flight of the Moths. The tall and vigorous shrub is attractive for its asymmetrical semi-double cream colored flowers and delicate aroma. The inflorescences protrude slightly above the leaves, so it seems that white butterflies are circling around the bush.

Airborne assault

On a compact bush (about 1.4 m high), thin twigs bend under the weight of inflorescences (8-9 cm long) with 7-9 loosely located medium-sized and simple bowl-shaped flowers. They resemble parachutes and also smell nice of strawberries.

Salute

The chubushnik bush, about 2.4 m high, is strewn with numerous double flowers (4-4.5 cm in diameter) of white color with a delicate smell.

Komsomolets

The shrub reaches a height of 1.3 m. Its sturdy stems are located at an angle of 80 degrees. Shoots (about 10 cm long) are slightly curved upward. In the middle of summer, they are strewn with double flowers (about 4.5 cm in diameter) of a snow-white color. The lower petals are oval, the inner ones are narrow and more oblong.Among them, yellow anthers are barely noticeable.

chamomile

This variety is loved by many growers due to the unusual shape of the flowers. They are almost flat and at the same time with narrow and long petals. Outwardly, such flowers resemble chamomile - hence the name of the variety.

Snow avalanche, Ballet of Moths, Airborne Assault, Salute, Komsomolets, Camomile and other varieties of domestic selection are often combined into a group called Vekhova Varieties. These are the most frost-resistant varieties of chubushnik.

Bicolore

This plant has white flowers (about 5 cm in diameter) with a pink-burgundy core and golden stamens.
