Preparing atria cabbage seeds for planting

Detailed description and characteristics of the atria cabbage variety

Atria cabbage variety was obtained by a hybrid method by Dutch breeders. This vegetable culture has gained immense popularity among gardeners and is widely used in cooking.

Description and characteristics of the variety

Atria is a late-ripening variety with tough, round, medium-sized heads. The main characteristics of atria cabbage: leaves are oval, dense, slightly curved, leaf color is bright green. Wax bloom is visible on the sheets. The mass of a head of cabbage is on average from 1.5 kg to 8 kg. The ripening period is 135-150 days.

Advantages

Below is a description of the benefits of this variety:

  • excellent taste;
  • widespread use in cooking;
  • impeccable presentation;
  • good transportability;
  • has no tendency to cracking;
  • high resistance to disease;
  • high productivity;
  • storage duration - six months.

Preparation of atria cabbage seeds

Seeds must be hardened before sowing and tested for germination.

We carry out hardening in this way:

  1. Immerse the seed in hot water with a temperature of 50-60 degrees. Soak for 15–20 minutes, take out and cover with ice water for 2 minutes. After that, soak for 12 hours in a nitroammophos solution and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Wrap the seeds in a damp cloth and leave for 5-6 days. The wipe needs to be moistened to prevent drying out. After 6 days, discard all seeds that have not sprouted.

Sowing seeds

For planting seeds, you must prepare a special soil. To do this, in equal parts in wooden boxes, you need to mix turf soil, calcined river sand and peat. If there is no sod land, then you can use the land from the garden, having previously disinfected it with a strong solution of manganese. Disinfection is necessary to protect young seedlings from disease. It is imperative to add superphosphate and ash to the soil for top dressing at the rate of:

  • soil - 1 bucket;
  • ash - 8-10 grams;
  • superphosphate - 18 grams.

In the prepared soil, make grooves up to 2 cm deep, sow the seeds at a distance of 1 cm from each other. Cover the grooves with earth and compact them a little. Place the box with seeds in a room with a temperature of +20 degrees. The seeds will germinate on day 5. After that, the seedlings are transferred to a room with a temperature of no more than +7 degrees. If this temperature regime is not observed, the seedlings die.

After 10 days, when the first two leaves appear, the seedlings must be dived. For this, it is best to take peat cups. The cups are filled with the same potting mix used for planting the seeds. Before transplanting, it is recommended to water the seedlings with a weak solution of manganese. Carefully dig out the seedlings so as not to damage the roots. It is more convenient to do it with a teaspoon. After transplanting, you need to move the seedlings closer to natural light and reduce the temperature in the room: in the daytime to 12 degrees, and at night - to 6-8 degrees.

After 22-25 days, when the seedlings have 4 leaves, they can be planted in open soil.

Top dressing of seedlings

When two leaves appear on the seedlings, it is necessary to perform the first feeding. To do this, you need to make a solution from the following ingredients:

  • water - 1 liter;
  • mineral fertilizer - 1/2 of a tablet.

The seedlings are sprayed with this solution.

The next feeding should be done during the hardening period.

The solution is prepared in the following proportions:

  • water - 10 liters;
  • urea - 4 grams;
  • potassium chloride - 3 grams;
  • potassium sulfate - 3 grams.

Hardening of seedlings

Before transplanting to the garden, the seedlings must be hardened. The hardening procedure is carried out one and a half to two weeks before transplanting to a permanent place. Hardening is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. In the room, open the window for 4–6 hours. We do this for the first two days.
  2. Then for 7 days we take out the boxes with seedlings on the balcony and bring them into the room only for the night.
  3. For a full day, we leave the seedlings on the balcony 5 days before the transplant.

Soil preparation

To get a good harvest, it is important to properly prepare the soil and determine the place for planting seedlings. Atria loves fertile peaty soil. The area for growing this variety must be well lit. Lack of light will affect the formation of heads of cabbage. It grows well in the garden where tomatoes, peas, onions, potatoes, cucumbers previously grew.

The soil for growing cabbage is prepared in the fall. Dig the garden bed to a depth of 25-30 cm and without loosening it, leave it until spring... In the spring, the soil is leveled and dug up to a depth of 15 cm, the weed is removed. Then fertilizers are applied - per 1 sq. meter 4-6 kg of rotted mullein and dig up a garden bed 8 cm deep before transplanting seedlings.

Transplanting seedlings into open soil

Atria in open ground is best transplanted on May 15–20. By this time, the soil is already sufficiently warmed up and the probability of frost is minimal. The distance between the seedlings should be 35–40 cm. The row spacing should be 60 cm wide. It is best to transplant in the late afternoon. Saplings are added dropwise to the first leaves. For better survival, seedlings should be sprayed for six days at least three times a day. It should also be borne in mind that the roots of the atria at this moment are still weak. Therefore, within two months after planting, you should carefully remove the weeds and loosen the soil.

Hilling is another prerequisite. It should be done after every watering and loosening.

This will help keep moisture in the soil longer. During the summer, fertilizing should be applied 5-6 times. For these purposes, rotted mullein or chicken droppings are well suited. The first feeding is carried out two weeks after planting. The second one - 35 days after the transplant. Further feeding is carried out once a month. Fertilizer should be applied to well-watered soil to avoid burns.

Diseases and methods of dealing with them

The most common diseases of Atria include:

  • blackleg;
  • keel.

With these diseases, the root system is affected. In this case, the seedlings are pulled out, and the land on the site is covered with lime.

Downy mildew is another common disease. It hits the leaves. With this disease, the humidity should be normalized and the cabbage should be treated with a Bordeaux liquid solution in the ratio: 500 ml of solution for 1 bucket of water.

Cabbage pests

Cabbage pests include:

  • aphid;
  • cruciferous bugs;
  • caterpillars of cabbage scoop;
  • caterpillars of cabbage whites;
  • snails.

Harvesting

The crop is harvested in late October - early November. The cabbage is cut and laid out on shelves or in boxes in one row. The cabbage is placed side by side, the heads of cabbage should not touch each other. The temperature in the basement should not be higher than +2 degrees, humidity 93–97%. If stored properly, it retains its taste and presentation until spring. It was noticed that after 1.5 months after harvest, the taste of cabbage is noticeably improved. The fiber contained in the leaf becomes less coarse, and it acquires juiciness.Observing all the recommendations, it is not at all difficult to grow this variety of cabbage. Rich harvest!
