A pick of cabbage is performed if there is a need to thin out crops, or to provide seedlings with the necessary nutrients until they are transplanted into open beds.

The need for cabbage planting

When can a pick be done?

In the southern regions, cabbage can simply be sown in the garden beds. But closer to the north, where summer is not so long, the seedling method is used to obtain good yields. That is, young shoots are at home during the initial period of their growing season. This helps to artificially extend the warm season, the cabbage grows and ripens fully.

Many gardeners have mastered this method perfectly, but in order to obtain high-quality seedlings, the optimal timing of its diving should be observed.

Among other things, it is necessary to decide in advance the issue of lighting the seedlings - to organize their supplementary lighting.

Seating options

This work can be done in two ways.

The first option is a transplant. To facilitate the task, the seedlings are watered a couple of hours before the procedure. After that, the soaked earth lump is easily removed from the planting container. This method allows, if necessary, to pinch the main root so that the plant begins to form lateral branches. It is recommended to hold the seedling by the leaves when transplanting, so as not to accidentally damage the thin stem.The method is also good in that you can check the results of the work by gently pulling the seedling up by the leaves. If the pick is unsuccessful, then the plant will come out of the ground without problems. This means that the soil does not adhere very tightly to the stem and roots.

Transshipment is the second way of picking seedlings. It is good because the root system of the seedlings does not receive any damage. Seedlings do not need time to adapt, their development does not stop.

When growing seedlings, many people prefer to use paper or polyethylene cups. In addition, there are also film containers. To do this, the film is cut into rectangular strips, rolled into tubes, and fastened. The containers without bottoms are installed tightly into the planting box, filled with soil composition, and compacted.

You can also use nutritional cubes. For this, a soil composition is laid out in the box, leveled and compacted. Then, using a plywood sheet, the contents of the planting container are cut into cubes. In the center of each cube, a recess is made with a thin stick, where the seedlings will dive.

How to thin out seedlings at home?

We have already found out that the picking of seedlings will provide not only new areas for feeding, but will also allow updating the soil composition. It is recommended to dive only healthy, strengthened seedlings, rejecting curves that have damage and even small thickenings on the roots.

Training

Cabbage seedlings need to be shed well so they can be easily removed and root damage is minimal. Naturally, you should prepare pots, cups or cubes in advance, make up a soil mixture. To do this, add 10 g of potassium chloride to a bucket of soil, and 20 g of superphosphates and ammonium nitrate each. The dimensions of the planting containers should be "six by six by eight" centimeters.

Peculiarities

When diving, you should use a small wooden spatula or a teaspoon handle, carefully prying the seedling with an earthen lump and moving it to another place. If the center spine is too long, you can pinch it. But it will be better if you keep it intact.

Rules and Scheme

The seedling is deepened to the cotyledonous leaf that appears first. This option stimulates the formation of additional roots, increases the nutrition of the sprout. After finishing the transplant, the seedlings must be watered, protected from direct sunlight for a couple of days, and a temperature regime must be created within ten degrees Celsius at night and thirteen degrees during the day.

How to care for cut seedlings?

As soon as the sprouts take root and resume development, they can be fed with mullein, diluting it with water "one to five". You can add 3 g of superphosphate to this composition for each liter or bird droppings, diluted 1 to 15. After a couple of weeks, it is allowed to carry out a second feeding using the same mullein infusion. For each liter, add 6 g of superphosphate, 4 - ammonium nitrate, 2 - potassium chloride. On the eve of landing, it will not be superfluous to perform a similar procedure again.

In warm weather, containers with seedlings can be taken out to the balcony, putting them away at night in the warmth. A week before transplanting into the ground, hardening is organized. Do not forget to water, gently loosen the topsoil and remove weeds.
