The plant is unpretentious, but it is grown as an annual, despite the fact that it is essentially perennial. Bushes grow dense and eye-catching thanks to rich green stems with beautiful leaves and bright fluffy petals.

The flower appeared in the late 1800s thanks to the pharmacist Shabo, who crossed the Dutch (garden) and narrow-petaled species. The result was a species that was named after the pharmacist, and has the following characteristics:

• the root system is pivotal, located at a depth of 15 centimeters on average.
• the bush has a height of up to 60 cm and rounded shoots of green color.
• leaves of the same color, narrow-linear.
• flowers are semi-double or double, as well as simple. They are large enough and painted in different colors.
• petals are corrugated, curved and folded.
• characterized by slow development, since from the moment of sowing to the flowering period it takes up to six months, sometimes less.

The plant loves warmth and sun, therefore, in central Russia, it will not survive the winter without shelter, only in the south. But under greenhouse conditions (in a shelter), the flower will not die.

The carnation of this species is distinguished by remontantity, that is, it can bloom repeatedly from the beginning of July until frost. In warm regions, flowering does not stop in winter, there are breaks only for a period of prolonged rains.

It is advisable to cultivate this variety only in those areas where autumn is warm and dry, since under other conditions it will not be able to develop correctly and delight the gardener with delicate flowers for a long time.

Since shabo develops slowly, picking is recommended. The first time is about a month later, when there are already 2 leaves. In this case, the distance between neighboring plants should be about 4 cm. The second time they dive when there are 3-4 leaves. When the fifth appears, it is imperative to pinch the growth point.

Hardening is useful for plants, but it is important to ensure that there are no drafts and that the air temperature does not drop below 12 degrees. If there is a lack of lighting, it is better to additionally highlight the sprouts. In general, daylight hours for this variety should be around 17 hours.

Transplant to open ground

By the way, there is a similar type of clove - grenadine. It differs in that it does not need to be sown for seedlings, it will grow and develop perfectly if it is planted immediately in the ground. So if seedlings are a waste of time for someone, you can buy grenadine seeds.

The open ground transplant takes place in April-May. Initially, it is necessary to choose the ideal place for the carnation: protected from all directions from strong winds and, at the same time, sunny. The soil needs neutral. Since the fall, it has been prepared for the spring planting of shabo: compost and fertilizers are added, which will become the plant's nutrient reserves.

The seedlings are planted so that the root collar is not buried and together with the lump of earth in which they originally grew. The distance between the holes is about 25 cm. If support is required, pegs are installed.

At the beginning of the growing season, it is worth feeding the plant with special fertilizers (in combination) or nitrogen, and when the buds appear, they give phosphorus and potassium. If everything was done correctly and at the right time during the planting, flowering will begin approximately in July.

When one bush is damaged by an infectious or viral disease, it is immediately removed, and the rest are treated with copper so that they do not die either. Pests are scared off with various infusions, for example, garlic.

The best specimen after flowering can be dug up and stored until spring to start propagation by cuttings. Another option is to transplant shabo from open ground into a pot for the winter.
