Foreword

Today it is practically impossible to find a summer cottage where beautiful flowers and luxurious shrubs would not grow. Often on the site there is also a budley, planting and caring for which for many is still a secret. We will reveal all the secrets of this plant.

Budleya - what is this plant?

Boudley, if we talk about wildlife, grows in China, choosing places near mountains and rivers. Externally, the plant is a deciduous and lush flowering shrub that, with proper care, can reach a height of about two meters. The branches of the shrub are thin and flexible, ending in colorful inflorescences. Wild shrubs have dark purple inflorescences with a bright orange center.

In varietal shrubs, inflorescences have raspberry, lilac, lavender, white and red shades. The middle of the inflorescence is most often orange. The leaves of the shrub, pointed at the end, reach a length of up to 25 cm. If you want budlea to grow in your garden - how to care for it, here's what you need to know. And we will tell you everything that may be useful to novice gardeners about this.budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

Shrub budley David - planting and care

Have you decided to decorate your garden with this beautiful plant? You need to take care of the reproduction of the shrub in advance, since the cultivation of budleia is possible in two ways: cuttings and seeds. The material for planting should be prepared at the beginning of autumn, and planting is carried out at the end of spring - there is no need to pre-prepare the seeds. So, the seeds are simply planted in damp ground and cover the container with glass. When the seeds give green shoots, they can be transplanted into a pot, and then planted in the garden when it gets warmer.budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

With proper care, young inflorescences will appear on the shrub already in the first year.

Reproduction of budleia using cuttings also has its advantages. And all thanks to the fact that budlea is devoid of such a disadvantage as the loss of varietal properties when planting by cuttings. In addition, this option is divided into two methods: the use of green or lignified cuttings. It is better to plant green cuttings as soon as you cut them, but lignified ones need to be kept in a cool room all winter. Only then can the cutting be planted in the prepared place.budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

Before planting shrubs, you must first fertilize the planting pits with manure, and also add ash and a mixture of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The budley itself should be carried with a clod of earth. Also, be careful not to damage the root system during transplantation, which can lead to the death of plants. Now you know how to plant a budley, which means it's time to talk about caring for this beautiful and unusual shrub.

Good Budley Care - What to Remember?

There are several important nuances to consider when growing a budlea in your garden. Therefore, you definitely need to remember about a number of rules:

  1. Accommodation. Budleya is a light-loving plant, and therefore you need to choose bright places for planting on the site, protected from drafts.budley pink delight planting and care in the open field
  2. The soil.This shrub grows very quickly, and therefore the soil for it must be nutritious, moist, characterized by neutral acidity. It must be remembered that there should not be waterlogged soil, because this will lead to the death of the plant.
  3. Disembarkation. The distance between the bushes should be at least 2 meters, since the bushes grow very strongly.
  4. Top dressing and watering. Budleia is drought-resistant plants, while the shrub is very responsive to watering in the dry season and responds well to the use of mineral fertilizers. Thanks to top dressing, you can increase the number and improve the quality of inflorescences. The first time it is preferable to feed the plant in the spring (it is better to use fertilizers with a high nitrogen content), the second time, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are used before flowering.budley pink delight planting and care in the open field
  5. Pruning. It is imperative to remove rusty shoots - this will improve the appearance of the shrub. If you planted the budley as a green hedge, then pruning will help shape the crown beautifully.

Preparing the shrub for winter

Buddleya has only one drawback - it is a reduced level of frost resistance. If the outside temperature drops below 0 degrees, the shrubbery begins to freeze and can freeze to the very roots. True, in this spring the plant is still restored and begins to bloom. But over time, it grows old and regeneration is given to him more and more difficult.

That is why it is necessary to protect the shrub from the cold, so that after 5-7 years the budlea does not disappear. So, some gardeners huddle and sprinkle the stems with humus or peat before winter. True, if the winter is too humid, such insulation can lead to the plant getting wet.

It is much more efficient and competent to make a dry shelter, which will consist of a metal or wooden frame. On top of the frame, you need to pull any waterproof material, the lower part of which should be pressed to the ground with bricks or stones. To create a warmer layer, dry leaves can be stuffed inside the material. Thanks to this insulation, you can protect the shrub from the cold, thanks to which the budlea will delight you with its beauty until late autumn.

Buddlea (lat. Buddleja) is a perennial shrub belonging to the flowering department, the dicotyledonous class, the order of the lucid-flowered, the family of vines, the genus Budley. Quite often, this graceful and bright plant can be seen in public gardens, in flower beds in city parks or in private gardens.

The Latin name "Buddleja" was given to the plant in the 18th century in honor of the British botanist Adam Buddle.

back to contents ↑ Buddley - planting and leaving.

Before planting a buddley, you should choose an ideal place for the shrub. Buddleya is responsive to light, loves space, but its rather fragile branches often suffer from gusts of wind.

  • Planting buddley.

Before planting shrubs, planting pits should be fertilized with rotted manure, as well as phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and ash. Planting buddley is carried out in 2 ways: by seeds and cuttings. But regardless of which method you choose, the following steps should be followed:

  1. First, buddley (seeds or cuttings) are planted at home in pots or boxes in advance. This is done in February, so that by the spring the buddlei seedlings are strong and ready for planting in open ground.
  2. In the period from April to May, when the ground warms up enough, buddley seedlings are planted in open ground, it is more convenient to bury the plant in the ground along with a container so as not to damage the roots.
  3. In the land, buddleya grows before the onset of cold weather. Then the plant is dug up and placed in special containers, which should be kept in a cool place, for example, in a basement. To prevent moisture from evaporating, the container can be tightened with foil, leaving the plant itself free. Only adult plants, which are 2-3 years old, can be left in the ground for the winter period. Be careful - not only cold winters are more terrible, but also mild winters with frequent thaws, during which the bush can get wet.
  4. After wintering, in April-May, the buddlea is again ready for planting in open ground. If the flower is not planted in the ground, it will not have enough moisture in the summer, and frequent watering will be necessary.
  • back to contents ↑ Buddley bush: going into intense heat.

In intense heat, the buddlea shrub needs good, but not excessive watering and additional spraying of the foliage. This procedure is performed in the evening after sunset. It is advisable to cover the soil around the buddleya with straw mulch or a layer of peat, which will optimally retain moisture.

  • back to contents ↑ Buddley flower: pruning.

Pruning buddleya is mandatory, especially in the first year, and it is carried out in early spring (late March - early April). The main branches of the shrub are shortened by almost half, as a result, the flower gives a powerful growth of lateral shoots, pleases with lush forms and rich flowering. It should be remembered that such withdrawal is very important for the buddleya.

  • back to contents ↑ Preparing the buddley for winter.

Unfortunately, the buddley bush is afraid of the cold: after all, it is a southern "inhabitant". This nuance requires the correct organization of the winter bush shelter. Before doing this, the buddley must be cut off. You should not be afraid if this is done very shortly: in the spring the plant will surprise you with its new, more luxurious crown. Then the buddley bush can be insulated with dry foliage, hay or sawdust, covered with a wooden box or other improvised structure on top.

back to contents ↑ Reproduction of buddley by cuttings.

Despite the fact that buddleya is an exotic plant, it reproduces quite easily. The easiest way to propagate a buddley flower is using the apical cuttings of an adult specimen.In the summer, in June-July, several young, strong shoots are cut off, the lower leaves are removed from them, the cutting is treated with a growth-stimulating composition. Then the prepared buddlea shoots are planted in loose soil, watered and covered with foil until rooting. This reproduction technique allows you to fully preserve all the species characteristics of a certain buddley variety.

back to contents ↑ Buddleya: growing from seeds.

Reproduction of the buddleya shrub by seeds is also possible, but this process is more laborious. At the beginning of spring, the seeds are sown in cups with a moistened peat mixture, covered with foil and removed to a warm place for 14-18 days before germination. The emerging sprouts should be ventilated, and the soil should be moistened once every 3 days. In the future, the matured and grown buddleya seedlings are planted in a permanent place.

  • During the flowering period of buddleya, a warm sugar aroma emanates from the flowers, which is compared with the smell of hyacinths.
  • Stem cells of the type of David's buddley are used in cosmetology as anti-stress agents.

A little about the plant

In all its glory, buddlea grows in tropical and subtropical regions. The variety of their species is striking: more than 100! These are evergreen or deciduous species, with a lignified stem or herbaceous, with a height of 1.5 to 3 m.

Large leaves (in some species grow up to 30 cm) have a lanceolate-oval shape. They are arranged in pairs on the stem. Above they are dark green, and below they are white or yellow with a short edge. The fruit is an elongated capsule with many small seeds.

Abundant flowering begins from 3 years in August and lasts for 35-45 days. Small tubular flowers, collected in large spike-shaped or spherical inflorescences. They have a variety of colors. The delicate smell emanating from the flowers attracts a huge number of insects. The plant is peculiar: it can simultaneously contain buds, flowers and fruits.

Among the cultivated species of buddlei, there are those that are winter-hardy, able to withstand temperatures as low as -20 ºC. The cultivation of such species is possible in Siberia.

Popular types

Of the large species diversity of plants, only some of them can be grown on the territory of our country.

These are what, like:

  • Pink;
  • Delight;

The most popular view is David. It is named after the botanist Adam Buddl, who first described the flower and introduced Europeans to it.

Buddleya David is a deciduous tall shrub that freezes to the roots for the winter, and in the spring it releases young shoots that grow up to 2-3 m.It shakes with its bright spike-shaped long (up to 70 cm) inflorescences. The usual color of her flowers is lilac-violet. The flowering period is from early July to mid-September. Narrow, serrated leaves are located opposite each other. The cultivation of buddleya as a culture began at the end of the 19th century.

Seed preparation

Reproduction of buddleya occurs by cuttings and seeds. The simplest and fastest method is to grow an adult plant with cuttings.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldBuddleya David Red Royal

  • Cuttings

They will be called sprouts that have at least 3 buds. There are 2 ways to prepare them.

  1. In autumn, they can be cut only after the plant has finished flowering and if a bark has formed on them.Store cuttings in a cool place (usually a cellar) at a temperature that does not fall below 0 ºC.
  2. Young shoots are cut off and buried immediately in a new place.

Advice: given that the rooting (adaptation) of the plant is long (about 2 months), it is not recommended to plant in this way at the end of summer.

  • Seeds

To accelerate the germination of seeds, they should be sown in moist soil. Then, a "greenhouse" for the planted seeds is created with a container made of plastic or glass. As soon as sprouts begin to sprout from the seeds, the "greenhouse" is removed for ventilation. First, for 1 hour a day, and then gradually increasing this time. When 2-3 leaves grow on the shoots, they are planted (dived) in separate containers, in which they grow stronger and grow until spring.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

The usual watering at the root of the seedlings is unacceptable! To water the seedlings, water must be poured into a pan and the leaves are additionally sprayed.

It is important to know: a plant grown from seeds may differ in some ways from the parent. This indicates a partial or complete loss of the properties of this variety.

Landing rules

When choosing a place for planting, it is necessary to take into account that buddleya is a thermophilic plant that does not like drafts. Therefore, its cultivation should take place in such an area where there will be sun and no wind at the same time. David feels comfortable with the illuminated side of fences and small buildings.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

  • What soil is better to plant

The shrub grows on any kind of soil. But it has been noticed that fast growth and violent flowering of buddleia can be obtained if it is planted in "light", moist soil with neutral acidity.

If the proposed planting site has a different soil, then it needs to be slightly changed. This is done simply:

A drainage layer of a fraction of about 10-15 cm is placed in the hole prepared for planting. A small layer of earth is poured onto it from the site mixed with compost and any mineral fertilizer. Instead of these components, the soil can be mixed with wood ash and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer.

  • When to plant

Planting buddley in open ground is good when the frost is over and the soil warms up well. Even a slight drop in temperature below 0 ºC. can destroy a young plant.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

  • How to plant

If a cutting is planted, then it must be buried so that 2 buds are in the ground. After planting, the soil is lightly compacted and watered. Then, the near-trunk area is sprinkled with mulch.

Advice: given that the shrub does not like an excess of moisture, it does not need to be planted in damp soil. It will be enough to moisten it with the first watering.

The size of the hole for planting is 40:40 cm, with a depth equal to the length of the root system, taking into account fertilization and drainage.

With the simultaneous planting of several seedlings in a row, the distance between them should not be less than 1.5 m. This value is calculated on the condition that the shrub grows quickly and has a spreading crown.

  • Transfer

An adult David does not like a transplant, it is stressful for her. She "gets sick" for a long time after her and looks depressed. If, nevertheless, such a need arose, then the shrub is transplanted with soil around it. In the new place, it is watered abundantly.

Tip: it is unacceptable for some time after transplanting to loosen the soil next to the root system.

How to care

Caring for buddleya in the open field is not difficult, but it requires gardeners to know several rules: for abundant flowering, constant pruning is necessary, for plant growth and the formation of inflorescences, watering and timely feeding are important.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

  • Watering

They do not need to be abused. David does not tolerate an excess of moisture and waterlogged soil. Enough 1 bucket of water for one shrub. Watering is carried out every 10-14 days. If the days are hot and dry, then a little more often.

  • Top dressing

The first feeding is carried out during the growing season. For this, nitrogen fertilization is used.It helps the plant to recover after winter, promotes the growth of new shoots.

The next feeding is carried out during the period when the shrub is gaining color. In the composition of the applied top dressing, potassium and fluorine must be present in the predominant amount. Subsequent feeding is carried out depending on the condition of the plant and soil.

  • Pruning

The flowering of David's buddley is long lasting. Dried and faded inflorescences are constantly present on it. They just need to be cut (just do not break!).

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

If the shrub grows for the first year, it needs to form a crown. For this, pruning of brittle and weak shoots is performed, and all the rest are cut in half.

Pruning is carried out before the onset of cold weather. All branches are cut off as much as possible so that the remaining part above the ground does not exceed 20 cm. Roots in the ground in spring will give new shoots.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open field

  • How to prepare for winter

Buddleya David does not like frost, so she needs to be well covered for the winter. A dry shelter is applied. For its manufacture, any frame is used, up to 25 cm high. A fabric that is not able to pass water is pulled over it. Dry foliage is laid inside the shelter. It will create a favorable microclimate inside and will not let the roots rot.

Advice: so that David does not come into contact, it is necessary to provide for the flow of air under the frame.

  • Disease and pest control

In rare cases, Buddleya is subject to disease. If the ground underneath is very wet, gray rot may develop. The affected bush is sprayed with fungicides.

The shrub is often chosen by spider mites, whiteflies. They usually settle on it in dry and hot weather. To destroy them, special insecticides are used, and the affected branches and shoots are removed. Spraying is recommended in the evening.

All these recommendations for plant care will allow you to grow it healthy and beautiful.

Using buddley

David is a worthy decoration for any landscape. Designers have been using it for a long time to compose luxurious compositions, fill voids in plots, and update the landscape. Its lonely plantings look spectacular among low plants. Dominating them, Buddleya fully reveals his beauty.

Key characteristics of budles

David Buddley is best planted on the sunny side of the site, so it will grow faster. And even 20-degree frosts are not terrible for this flower, provided they are securely sheltered. Buddleya is a shrub with a large number of inflorescences, which smell very nice, exuding a honey aroma. This flower has many other names, for example:

  • autumn lilac;
  • honey bush;
  • magnet for butterflies.

In the wild, buddleys grow in many regions of the world:

  • in the Caucasus;
  • in South Africa;
  • China, etc.

However, now this flower has already been actively mastered by gardeners, breeding work was carried out, new varieties and species appeared, flowering times have become longer. In total, over the past 100 years, 150 species of budley have been bred, these are both cultural and hybrid varieties.

Decorative features of the budley

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldBudleia shrubs are very common in gardens, they perfectly complement landscape corners, look great in groups against the backdrop of lawns and mixborders. Also, these flowers are sometimes used to camouflage outbuildings or pipes, and they are also used to equip a hedge.

The key advantages of budlea as an ornamental plant are:

  • variety of shades;
  • different shapes;
  • harmonious combination with other shrubs, as well as roses and other flowers.

Designers often create compositions based on the transition of tones.... And after cutting the lower branches of the bushes, they are great for planting in flowerpots to decorate stairs and terraces.

Flowering time

The blooming period of the budley lasts from July to September, sometimes to October. In total, buddleya can bloom for about 10 years, and if grown from cuttings, flowering can begin in the first year of its life. Spectacular flowering and a unique smell - all this makes the buddleya of David an indispensable component of any garden.

Types and varieties of flowers

As already mentioned, there are more than a hundred different varieties and species of this plant. But below we will tell you about the most common in Russia.

Buddley of David

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldThe classic plant variety is a voluminous bush up to 3 meters high. The ends of the branches have a drooping arrangement. The root system is superficial. In order for the flowering to be continuous, you need to remove the faded panicles.... This species blooms from three years old, the flower is able to grow up to 2 meters during the season. In autumn, it gives small seeds, multiplies by cuttings. For successful growth, the following conditions must be met:

  • landing on the sunny side;
  • calcareous soil;
  • timely watering and irrigation;
  • regular fertilization;
  • insulation for the winter.

Black Knight and Nano Blue

This shrub grows up to a maximum of 2 meters in height and has purple inflorescences. Planting in partial shade is possible, needs regular watering, winter care is possible without shelter. Well suited for group plantings.

A species such as Nano Blue has a funnel-shaped crown and will grow in height and width by 1.5 meters. The leaves are elongated, their reverse side is gray and velvety, the inflorescences have a violet-blue hue, the branches are bent downward under their weight. Needs sun and fertile soil.

Pink Delight

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldThis shrub is very tall, erect and spike-shaped inflorescences, have a pink tint. The aroma is honeyed and thick. The crown after winter is replaced by new shoots and during the season it gives an increase of three meters. Loves light and drained calcareous soils. Can be grown with low shrubs and herbaceous perennials.

Royal Red and Flower Power (bi color)

This flower is distinguished by its red-purple inflorescences, which have a drooping arrangement. His the height is 3 meters, the plant also has a wide crown... It grows quickly and recovers well after winter. The optimal soil is calcareous and neutral, sufficiently drained. Also buddleya of this variety loves water and light.

There is a variety called Flower Power. There are also varieties of tri color flower, depending on the number of shades. In this case, there are two of them:

  • Violet;
  • Orange.

This shrub is tall and spreading, it is distinguished by its warmth. Its inflorescences are fluffy and fragrant and can grow up to 40 cm in length. BUT on the reverse side, the leaves are drooping, yellow or white... Flowering begins from the second year of life. During the growing season, new shoots up to 2 meters long grow on the site of the frozen crowns. This species tolerates winter well.

Different varieties of Budleia: photo of flowers

Buddleya David: planting and leaving

Photos of the listed and other flower varieties can be found on the Internet without any problems. Planting and care features depend, among other things, on the growing region. So, in South Africa, the shrub covers the entire immediate area... But in Russia it often happens that a buddleya who loves a sunny color cannot always give ripe seeds on time. Therefore, in horticulture, propagation of this plant is often practiced.

Transfer to the ground

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldWhen the flower pulls up well, it is dived and transplanted either into separate containers or into open ground. It all depends on what climatic conditions and in what condition the seedlings are. Landing in the ground is good when the ground warms up enough after frost, and this is April or even the month of May. After planting, the site should be mulched using straw or peat.

It is not necessary to water the buddley too often, periodic rainfall will be enough for it. But dry soil is also not favorable for her, so this moment of leaving must be kept under control. To transplant an adult bush, you do not need to do anything in advance, it is enough to know its characteristics and requirements for the conditions of care.

Sowing seeds and cuttings

The sprouts are prepared in advance before planting:

  • in early February, seeds are planted in pots and allowed to germinate;
  • the container is covered with earth abundantly, observing an indent from the edge of the order of 3 cm, then watered;
  • planting seeds should be carried out in moist soil;
  • seeds are not sprinkled, it is better to cover with foil;
  • the room must be well ventilated and have adequate lighting;
  • after planting, the plant germinates within 4 weeks.

For sowing, it is recommended to use a well-drained substrate, which contains sand and humus in equal proportions. From above, they are covered with a thin layer of soil.

The temperature for germinating seeds at home should be about 25 degrees. The protective film must be removed only after the first leaves appear... When three leaves appear, you need to plant the seedlings in peat containers. Flowering occurs after transplantation in the second year of the plant's life.

And if we talk about cuttings, then the cuttings should be prepared immediately after the flowering of the plant at the end of September. They must be 20 cm high and have at least 3 buds. At the bottom, the stalk, together with two buds, sinks into the loosened soil. For the winter, it is covered with foil and sprinkled, leaving a small air gap. Cuttings will begin to grow in the spring after warming up the soil. On average, they grow up to 60 cm per season, sometimes they bloom even before the cold weather.

What is needed for the growth of a flower

Buddley of David will grow better if you follow these guidelines for her care:

  • the plant should be well lit by the sun... When the garden grows, the source of shade must be removed and the plant transplanted in the sun. At the same time, keep in mind that the adult budley does not really like transplantation. Also, avoid wind and drafts;
  • the soil must be properly selected and pre-treated... It is best if it is calcareous and well-drained. You need to feed it with the onset of spring and in the middle of summer with nitrogenous fertilizing. Flowering and growth will be better if you use organic fertilizers, as well as fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium;
  • water the plant so that the soil is always moistbut not flooded. In summer, you need to spray the crowns of the bushes with water;
  • prune the plant regularly... This stimulates good flowering and rejuvenation of the plant. In the first year, this should be done in March, cut the buddley in half, cutting off weak shoots. In the second year, you need to cut off new growths to two buds, as well as all old branches by a third. In subsequent years, pruning is needed to remove young growths for crown formation.

budley pink delight planting and care in the open fieldDespite the fact that buddlea is a frost-resistant plant, it still needs to be prepared for the cold season, especially in the first year after planting in open ground.

Cuttings, for example, are able to withstand a maximum of 10-degree frosts, therefore at colder temperatures, the bushes need to be wrapped up, and the runners should be cut to 15-20 centimeters... Then the bush is covered with a box covered with polyethylene. It is placed on a brick elevation, and sprinkled with leaves below.

The box will not be needed if the trimmed bush is sprinkled with plenty of straw and manure, and covered with spruce branches at the top. If you prepare a buddley for the winter correctly, then after a while you will enjoy the incredible flowering of a healthy bush until autumn.

The rules for planting and caring for a buddley are not that complicated. If you do everything correctly and do not be lazy to take care of the plant, you will be very satisfied.
